You cannot updatee if you are rooted. If you dont want to update, I believe you can freeze the notification using BloatFreezer or similar. If you do want to update you can either (1) do so via Kies or (2) un-root and then update ota. Either way you will be unrooted and have to re-root
i did update to 2.3.6 when i received the OTA and I click update and realize that i am rooted (root using superoneclick). I let the update goes through and after few minutes, my sgs2 is updated to 2.3.6 with wifi calling and great battery life. I think i will stay stock rooted until Nick (dev for Miui vibrant) made Miui for SGS2
Edit: Like everyone said, every phone is not created equal. Like mine, got updated even its rooted

I tried an app called voodoo OTA rootkeeper, I got it to temp-unroot my phone but after a restart it went into clockworkmod recovery. i restarted it again and it went back into unrooted mode.
i also cannot find bloatfreezer on android market.

Does anyone have the stock ATT ROM for this device?
I've had some random issues with it that I'd like to go back to factory stock and see if they're hardware related or not. I've done hours of searching and can't find any information on it anywhere.
Help please?

Thanks, but that's the opposite of what I need. I'm currently rooted and want a stock rom back on my phone. It's the non-rooted ROM that I can't find.
I think you can't get that off of samfirware.com I think that's the site

Follow the rooting guide in the Android developement forum, then instead of flashing the rom first and then the Recovery, flash the recovery first.
Boot into it(volume down + power button) and choose the nandroid backup.

I downloaded the appropriate firmware from that site, but when I apply the update in recovery mode it does the following (the green text should be yellow, but I figured you'd like to be able to read it):

Tried Kies a few times. Not once has it been able to flash the device. It will download the required files, and typically it'll just stop at that point and error out. Once I saw it try to update the device, then go back to the downloading files and then just never go anywhere...
Of course, looking now in Kies, It doesn't even pull a current firmware version, it's just blank space where it should be..
If I remember correctly, FW from samfirmware are Odin flashable....

I didn't even think to check that. I'll extract it now and attempt and post back with my findings.
So, flashing the stock rom from SamFirmwares worked great with Odin, no issues. I still have SuperUser installed on the device, but Titanium backup says that it can't get root privileges. My screenshot app works just fine still though, and my AT&T update failed. The download went fine, after it rebooted, the update went to "Preparing" and then "Update is failed" and it rebooted saying the update couldn't be installed at this time...
What on earth am I doing wrong?

yeah...the SU app is still there but it's functionality is obliterated. So if you are rooted and your device is needed to be serviced, just flash the non-rooted stock ROM (recommended samfirmware) and, you may need to factory reset to perform updates....hopefully this would do the trick

Well, that's what I did last night, flashed the stock non-rooted ROM from samfirmware last night, I just didn't reset the device settings/data afterwards. I can try resetting the data tonight and see if I can get the OTA update though.
Do you have clock work mod installed? Can that be effecting you from getting your updates if you do?
I am putting together a quick guide on how to update your Stock ROM, Rooted, custom recovery T-Mo GSIII without having to wipe your phone.
You will need:
- Kies (If your phone has not prompted you to install the OTA yet, Kies will download and attempt to install it for you) (http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c.../20120809103126135/Kies_2.3.2.12074_13_13.exe)
- ODIN 3.7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1270006&stc=1&d=1345396888)
- STOCK T-Mo GSIII recovery.img (I extracted this from the stock ODIN image for T-Mo) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269983&stc=1&d=1345396186)
- TWRP or CWM ODIN Flash-able recovery (CWM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269979&stc=1&d=1345396186 , TWRP - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269980&stc=1&d=1345396186)
- Recovery flashable SuperSU root package (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269984&stc=1&d=1345396186)
SO, place your phone in download mode (Vol Down + Home + Power), and via ODIN, flash the "Stock-Recovery-Image(Working T-Mobile T999).tar" image. ( This is putting the stock recovery back on your phone so the update can install).
When it reboots, either select yes to allow the OTA update to install (if your phone is already aware there is an update) on your phone, OR plug you phone into your PC and allow Kies to prompt you to update your firmware. Select yes and allow the OTA to install.
Once completed, your phone is updated without having to wipe, but you have lost root and customer recovery, so.....
Again, in Download mode, Flash either of the provided ODIN flash-able custom recoveries (TWRP, or CWM) I prefer TWRP
Once that is complete, you can reboot your phone into the new recovery (Vol UP + Home + Power)
Once in recovery, flash the SuperSU.zip package and Voila, all done, Triangle away and you in cool runnings.
Let me know if I need to clarify anything here. It makes sense to me, but then again, I fumbled through it to figure it out and extract the right recoveries and set permissions etc.....
Please hit the thanks button if this helped you in any way
Hans

But with Wildchild's it's a complete ROM (650-700MB), correct? Are you not wiping when you flash his?
Actually I'm not 100% that you need to do a full wipe, but I'm guessing you probably should. Depends on what's different. You can always nabdroid and give it a shot. I will later if I have time.
Anyway, I was more responding to the post above mine about stock with root than to the op. Sorry if shoulda been a little more clear on that.

What did you have to modify to get them working? Like I said before, I made this little method so you did not have to wipe your phone to get the OTA installed.
The only thing I could see that would cause the OTA to break wallet, or Google now would be that if you have to modify pieces in the /system/ directory that would be overwritten. The only thing I had to do after updating was re-flash my little installer for international boot image, re-remove Carrier IQ as it was added back, and revert the googlesearch.apk to the earlier backed up version (functioning unified search) with titanium. Outside of that I run a pretty tight ship as far as system modifications go outside of root and root privileged programs.
had to edit build pro for wallet
Thanks op, this worked great for me! Updated and rooted again...

I tried several times but couldent unroot my phone. I even tried through the root kit by mskip. I think the problem may be that I got my phone unlocked, not using an unlock code but some other method (all I know about this method is that my phone says"restricted access" for a few seconds upon restarting.)
Any suggestions on how to unroot? Also, if I unroot, will I loose the unlock?

I think the best method to unroot your phone will be to ODIN it back to the stock T-Mobile image. (Overwrites EVERYTHING, probably your unlock as well).

I would assume the build.prop file will be overwritten. So its possible you would need to modify after updating. May not be any way around it.
If you want to test for others, make nandroid backup , upgrade and test. If it works, update us. If not, update us

So (in case this all doesn't work out) to restore via nandroid, just root and apply right?

Well if it doesn't work (Which I think it won't), you don't need to worry about restoring root. You just need to flash a custom recovery to revert your nandroid backup. Your root and customization will come back with that.
But with some of the added features that come with the update, I would say don't look back. Upgrade to the latest, then reapply your customization to get wallet and all working again.
IF you have to revert your nandroid back, make sure to do a factory wipe before you revert to your backup.
thanks! i'll give it a shot this weekend once i get more time.
I've used two different versions of Odin and two different T-Mobile stock recoveries (other one is here), and I can't get stock recovery to replace CWM on my GS3. Odin reports that the flash is successful, but when it reboots, ROM Manager still shows me as having latest CWM Touch, and the T-Mo update fails. I'm attempting the update via Kies right now, but I anticipate failure due to CWM still being installed as recovery.
-- I have Cerberus anti-theft installed, but I don't see anything about protecting recovery.
-- I have Busybox installed, but that shouldn't affect recovery.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Interestingly enough, where the OTA update failed, the Kies update went smooth as silk. Now to re-root and remove bloatware!

Kies was stuck in the connecting loop still, so I unmounted my sd card, turned on USB debugging and Kies finally connected and asked to upgrade. Upgrading at this moment.

I have been running the official AT&T ICS release I927UCLH2, and was notified of an update for my phone from Device Management. I am now updated to I927UCLJ3 baseband. To my surprise, my keyboard backlight is now working. So far, everything looks good. There is no sign of this update on the Samsung ICS page. Maybe AT&T is just going to push it out and forgo Kies altogether? Who knows?

Seconded here. Do we have to remove CWMR in order to update from the new OTA update?
I just got a software push from AT&T for my Captivate Glide. After the restart, the keyboard lights now work! About phone says: Android v. 4.0.4. Baseband v. I927ULCLJ3. Build number IMM76D. I'll see if other things have been fixed like, ringtones that stop working and clock being x time slow. Both of which required a system restart

I reloaded the stock recovery from my LH2 install and tried the OTA update. It downloads the update but fails to install with an "Update Failed" after the reboot.
I never rooted my phone only installed CWM for the Keyboard fix and to backup with CWM. Wish I had never installed CWM now.
Just got off the phone with AT&T myself, the rep said it should be available on Kies, they want me to try the new firmware before they'll continue warranty procedure on my wife's glide.
Edit: Well it's not, but it should be soon I guess.
Second Edit: On phone with samsung, they say the update is still "on hold" on his system. At&t told me to call them if I needed help with the firmware update.
Thanks for the info. Kies kept crashing on me so could not try it and OTA says I need to way 24hrs to try again.
Will try Kies on a second computer.

I might have to try something similar since Kies nows says that "You device does not support upgrading via Kies". Since I did not root my phone it must either not be happy with the flashes I have done to recovery even though I have flashed back to stock recovery or the Keyboard fix I did.

Success!!
Here are my steps:
1. Restore a backup I made with CWMR before when I first installed it before making any mods.
2. Reinstall stock Recovery before doing anything else.
3. Get OTA update even though less than 24 hours since I restored a previous point in time.
Doing the stock ROM was my second choice but since I had a backup at least most of my apps and settings were recovered.
Good luck!

Awesome, will this be an odin flashable tar that will keep your data? I have been struggling for the past few hours trying to update without losing all my data. I flashed this rom [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2498233] that is stock and includes knox but Adb doesn't work for me and the at&t software update says its up to date, which its not, so I think the rom might have a problem, and I'm trying to figure out how to reinstall twrp so I can restore my backup but knox is blocking me. Hopefully I can just odin your rom and towelroot and be done with it.

Appears to be working! I've got someone who is going to try to get me everything I need to build a rom from the AT&T release, so if all goes well I should have it up this afternoon! :fingers-crossed:

could you make an update.zip for users with stock recovery as well?

I believe that wipes all your data so I wanted to avoid that, and it might not work according to some peoples experience,

OTA shouldn't wipe any of your data. The way it works is it patches the existing files on your device with any changes to bring it up to date. Shouldn't touch any user data at all.

It'll be recovery flashable. Im not sure yet if Ill be trying to create an Odin flashable one. Will need to have someone pull the system.img slightly differently if I do. (Would need to Odin flash 4.3, flash TWRP, boot straight to recovery and flash the OTA, then while still in recovery dump the partition.) Even then, no guarantee it would work quite right. These things can be a little finicky.
How is Knox blocking TWRP though? You should be able to flash that via Odin. Since you updated using the OTA though, every time you reboot, it will rewrite the stock recovery. So when you flash TWRP via Odin, uncheck the Auto Reboot box, then after the flash is successful, pull the battery. Then put it back in and boot straight to recovery and flash your rom.

I will try. No guarantees though. Its been a long time since I've messed with OTA's, so I'm not completely sure I will remember exactly what to do with it. I should be able to do it though. Just not making promises!

Not sure whether you can use Mobile Odin Pro to do that. Extracting the file from the OTA.zip and renaming it from 2400258.cfg to 2400258.zip makes it recognized in MOP, and the options are there to avoid the wipe, but I know earlier OTAs like that did wipe.
Note - I have only gone so far as loading it into MOP; waiting to see if someone more foolhardy than me is willing to actually do it.

Tempted to try it (flash through stock recovery) but not my phone lol
Unless MO is written to specifically handle it, it will probably fail. (Im not sure if it is or isn't)
Sorry if I was misinformed about it wiping data. On TMobile neither OTA's or flashing in Odin ever wipes data. Afaik, Odin will only wipe data if there is a data.img included in the .tar file. Our OTA's have never touched anything but dalvik on the data partition either from what I remember.

Let me be more precise; the technique I was talking about is found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767827 and applies the OTA in a way that wipes. Not sure whether MO would do the same or not; I haven't played with it since the upgrade to 4.3 last year and my memory is hazy.
Just tried and ADB sideload of this file to my S3. After renaming the .cfg file to .zip.
I get an "assert failed" on "getprop("ro.product.device") == "d2att""
Any suggestions? I'm wondering if the phone is reporting something other than d2att?
So no one tested this via stock recovery? Need to know if the update can be done through stock recovery.

Just tried this method.
I got the assert failure again, and it happily wiped my internal SD but didn't install the OTA.
Good thing I'm not using this device for anything critical, I'd be rather pissed off.
