I've been a long time lurker, first time post.
I have been running the official AT&T ICS release I927UCLH2, and was notified of an update for my phone from Device Management. I am now updated to I927UCLJ3 baseband. To my surprise, my keyboard backlight is now working. So far, everything looks good. There is no sign of this update on the Samsung ICS page. Maybe AT&T is just going to push it out and forgo Kies altogether? Who knows?

I get notified too; however because I have CWM installed, it interrupts the installation and I can't install the update.
Any thoughts on what to do to get it installed?

Seconded here. Do we have to remove CWMR in order to update from the new OTA update?
I just got a software push from AT&T for my Captivate Glide. After the restart, the keyboard lights now work! About phone says: Android v. 4.0.4. Baseband v. I927ULCLJ3. Build number IMM76D. I'll see if other things have been fixed like, ringtones that stop working and clock being x time slow. Both of which required a system restart

I reloaded the stock recovery from my LH2 install and tried the OTA update. It downloads the update but fails to install with an "Update Failed" after the reboot.
I never rooted my phone only installed CWM for the Keyboard fix and to backup with CWM. Wish I had never installed CWM now.
Just got off the phone with AT&T myself, the rep said it should be available on Kies, they want me to try the new firmware before they'll continue warranty procedure on my wife's glide.
Edit: Well it's not, but it should be soon I guess.
Second Edit: On phone with samsung, they say the update is still "on hold" on his system. At&t told me to call them if I needed help with the firmware update.
Thanks for the info. Kies kept crashing on me so could not try it and OTA says I need to way 24hrs to try again.
Will try Kies on a second computer.
Is there any way to reset the 24hour AT&T update time without erasing the data partition?

I might have to try something similar since Kies nows says that "You device does not support upgrading via Kies". Since I did not root my phone it must either not be happy with the flashes I have done to recovery even though I have flashed back to stock recovery or the Keyboard fix I did.
This blows.
does anyone know if i flash with a stock AT&T from sam firmware on a Rogers i927(r) will I be able to update to the new AT&T version on Kies ?

Success!!
Here are my steps:
1. Restore a backup I made with CWMR before when I first installed it before making any mods.
2. Reinstall stock Recovery before doing anything else.
3. Get OTA update even though less than 24 hours since I restored a previous point in time.
Doing the stock ROM was my second choice but since I had a backup at least most of my apps and settings were recovered.
Good luck!
2.3.6 phone says no OTA update. I'll try Kies later.

I found an odin flashable I927UCLH2.md5 and used it, and when into settings, about phone, software update, and it gave me an update and I'm downloading it right now.
The phone is now at I927UCLJ3. So AT&T can OTA push it instead of trying to force the phone to work with kies

You cannot updatee if you are rooted. If you dont want to update, I believe you can freeze the notification using BloatFreezer or similar. If you do want to update you can either (1) do so via Kies or (2) un-root and then update ota. Either way you will be unrooted and have to re-root
i did update to 2.3.6 when i received the OTA and I click update and realize that i am rooted (root using superoneclick). I let the update goes through and after few minutes, my sgs2 is updated to 2.3.6 with wifi calling and great battery life. I think i will stay stock rooted until Nick (dev for Miui vibrant) made Miui for SGS2
Edit: Like everyone said, every phone is not created equal. Like mine, got updated even its rooted

Woke up this morning and saw the system update message. It started to update but then I got a picture of the android with a red triangle. That stayed for a few minutes and the phone rebooted. Now I am still on 4.0.1 and there is no system update available.
Any thoughts as to what caused this or how to get the update to process?
For me the same problem.
I think something went wrong during the update. The installation of the update was already 30 minutes ongoing and nothing happened. After resetten the phone it started up with still 4.0.1 and no system update availiable.
Anyone an idee what went wrong?

You cannot install OTA the updates if you are rooted and have Clockwork Recovery installed. The only way you can update to 4.0.2 is to either install one of the many custom roms available or revert back to the stock recovery.

Thanks for the replies all.
The problem is that I do not have CWM installed, and my GN is not rooted. I am very happy with stock ICS so this is the first phone I have had in over 10 years that I have not installed a custom ROM on.
One thing to note is that I did force the install of 4.0.1. I was experiencing the volume bug and had to leave on a road trip so i could not wait for the first OTA to roll out to me. But to do that I did fastboot boot not fastboot flash for CWM so after a reset I am back on the stock recovery.
So any other ideas how to get the update to restart? The bootloader is obviously unlocked if that makes any difference.
Thanks,
cj

I'm not sure what you are reading, but here it is:
1) Whether you have root or not, it makes no difference.
2) Having CWM vs. stock recovery does make a difference, but only somewhat. In both cases, you CAN install the OTA update. It's just that the procedure is a little different. With the stock recovery, the OTA will install automatically. With a custom recovery (like CWM) it will install, but you have to install it manually.

Unless I'm reading the original post incorrectly, the thread is about a user who received the OTA update and it didn't install. His questions were: 1) What caused this? and 2) How to get the update to process?
Saying that the OTA will fail if he doesn't have the stock recovery, I suppose, addresses his questions but, instead of just saying that, would it not be more helpful to tell him that the OTA doesn't install automatically with CWM, it just needs a different install process, which EddyOS pointed him to), instead of just saying it will fail. In any case, you are correct -- lets just tell all users to flash back the stock recovery to install OTA updates.
I have the same problem. I flashed google Yakju images over my bell yakjuxx images. Boot loader is unlocked obviously but not rooted and no cwm.
I did however flash a different radio, not sure if that was my issue. Now the update has disappeared so I can't retry.

(I suppose you have the GSM version because of your ATT logo)
As you are describing right now, you are not rooted and in stock recovery.
Try flashing manually the OTA 4.0.2 which you can find here: http://download.peteralfonso.com/maguro
If it fails, then the original OTA 4.0.1 you forced was not the real OTA from google, so reflash the 4.0.1 from the above link and then flash 4.0.2.
If you have he CDMA version then find the OTA for that.

Thanks efrant! Those instructions worked.
I DID however discover something that I have not seen posted anywhere.
It would appear (for obvious reasons) that the OTA updates checks for version integrity. Due to me installing a different radio (Bell GN radio) the OTA update aborted itself and I saw the abort again when trying to manually update. This time I could see that the "radio" was mentioned and aborted. I re-installed the original Yakju radio from ITL41F and did the manual OTA update and it worked!
Now I just have to re-install the Bell GN radio image.

Yeah, I should mention that in the first post. (You could have also removed the assert in the updater-script file, and it would have installed.)

Can I prevent this problem for future OTA updates? Say 4.0.3 is pushed out, should I remove the assert in the update-script file now? or wait until it says "there's an update available"?
I don't want to have to manually update every time because I used a different radio.
Thank you very much for the answers. I did not mean to cause such a fuss. I am aware of how to flash the image manually, as I did that to force the 4.0.1 update.
I guess what (as it turns out) I was really asking was, What caused this to stop? And how to I retry/restart the automatic update?
The only other info that I can think that is relevant here is that I am sure that I forced the actual OTA. I wonder if something happened during the flash, or since, that corrupted something that the update is checking.
Oh and it is an unlocked GSM Nexus though I am currently in the UK for about 6 months so I have given up my ATT contract for a Pay-as-you-go Lebara SIM while here.
Thanks again for the answers, next time I'll try to be more clear the first time.

When the next update comes out, you can either either flash back the original radio before updating, or remove the assert in the update-script file in the new update.
Does anyone have the stock ATT ROM for this device?
I've had some random issues with it that I'd like to go back to factory stock and see if they're hardware related or not. I've done hours of searching and can't find any information on it anywhere.

Follow the rooting guide in the Android developement forum, then instead of flashing the rom first and then the Recovery, flash the recovery first.
Boot into it(volume down + power button) and choose the nandroid backup.

Tried Kies a few times. Not once has it been able to flash the device. It will download the required files, and typically it'll just stop at that point and error out. Once I saw it try to update the device, then go back to the downloading files and then just never go anywhere...
Of course, looking now in Kies, It doesn't even pull a current firmware version, it's just blank space where it should be..

I didn't even think to check that. I'll extract it now and attempt and post back with my findings.
So, flashing the stock rom from SamFirmwares worked great with Odin, no issues. I still have SuperUser installed on the device, but Titanium backup says that it can't get root privileges. My screenshot app works just fine still though, and my AT&T update failed. The download went fine, after it rebooted, the update went to "Preparing" and then "Update is failed" and it rebooted saying the update couldn't be installed at this time...
What on earth am I doing wrong?

Well, that's what I did last night, flashed the stock non-rooted ROM from samfirmware last night, I just didn't reset the device settings/data afterwards. I can try resetting the data tonight and see if I can get the OTA update though.
Do you have clock work mod installed? Can that be effecting you from getting your updates if you do?
I am putting together a quick guide on how to update your Stock ROM, Rooted, custom recovery T-Mo GSIII without having to wipe your phone.
You will need:
- Kies (If your phone has not prompted you to install the OTA yet, Kies will download and attempt to install it for you) (http://org.downloadcenter.samsung.c.../20120809103126135/Kies_2.3.2.12074_13_13.exe)
- ODIN 3.7 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1270006&stc=1&d=1345396888)
- STOCK T-Mo GSIII recovery.img (I extracted this from the stock ODIN image for T-Mo) (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269983&stc=1&d=1345396186)
- TWRP or CWM ODIN Flash-able recovery (CWM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269979&stc=1&d=1345396186 , TWRP - http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269980&stc=1&d=1345396186)
- Recovery flashable SuperSU root package (http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1269984&stc=1&d=1345396186)
SO, place your phone in download mode (Vol Down + Home + Power), and via ODIN, flash the "Stock-Recovery-Image(Working T-Mobile T999).tar" image. ( This is putting the stock recovery back on your phone so the update can install).
When it reboots, either select yes to allow the OTA update to install (if your phone is already aware there is an update) on your phone, OR plug you phone into your PC and allow Kies to prompt you to update your firmware. Select yes and allow the OTA to install.
Once completed, your phone is updated without having to wipe, but you have lost root and customer recovery, so.....
Again, in Download mode, Flash either of the provided ODIN flash-able custom recoveries (TWRP, or CWM) I prefer TWRP
Once that is complete, you can reboot your phone into the new recovery (Vol UP + Home + Power)
Once in recovery, flash the SuperSU.zip package and Voila, all done, Triangle away and you in cool runnings.
Let me know if I need to clarify anything here. It makes sense to me, but then again, I fumbled through it to figure it out and extract the right recoveries and set permissions etc.....
Please hit the thanks button if this helped you in any way
Hans
Nice instructions, but I'm going to wait a few days. I'm want to see if the dev that did the flash and root without tripping the flash counter will do the same for the new firmware. I'm still not too keen on custom recoveries yet even though I backed up my IMEI, so I just want to be rooted. If not, I'll use your guide.:good:
Wildchld already released it.

But with Wildchild's it's a complete ROM (650-700MB), correct? Are you not wiping when you flash his?
Actually I'm not 100% that you need to do a full wipe, but I'm guessing you probably should. Depends on what's different. You can always nabdroid and give it a shot. I will later if I have time.
Anyway, I was more responding to the post above mine about stock with root than to the op. Sorry if shoulda been a little more clear on that.

What did you have to modify to get them working? Like I said before, I made this little method so you did not have to wipe your phone to get the OTA installed.
The only thing I could see that would cause the OTA to break wallet, or Google now would be that if you have to modify pieces in the /system/ directory that would be overwritten. The only thing I had to do after updating was re-flash my little installer for international boot image, re-remove Carrier IQ as it was added back, and revert the googlesearch.apk to the earlier backed up version (functioning unified search) with titanium. Outside of that I run a pretty tight ship as far as system modifications go outside of root and root privileged programs.
had to edit build pro for wallet
Thanks op, this worked great for me! Updated and rooted again...

I tried several times but couldent unroot my phone. I even tried through the root kit by mskip. I think the problem may be that I got my phone unlocked, not using an unlock code but some other method (all I know about this method is that my phone says"restricted access" for a few seconds upon restarting.)
Any suggestions on how to unroot? Also, if I unroot, will I loose the unlock?

I think the best method to unroot your phone will be to ODIN it back to the stock T-Mobile image. (Overwrites EVERYTHING, probably your unlock as well).

Above is the link to the stock image.
Apologies, in general, but I feel you may have the wrong thread if your looking to unroot your phone. That is off topic on what is being discussed here.
has anyone tried this and kept google wallet and google now working? Any troubles?
I'm wanting to update but I'm rooted withthose two apps finally up and running.

I would assume the build.prop file will be overwritten. So its possible you would need to modify after updating. May not be any way around it.
If you want to test for others, make nandroid backup , upgrade and test. If it works, update us. If not, update us

So (in case this all doesn't work out) to restore via nandroid, just root and apply right?

You are correct about build.prop being overwritten.

Well if it doesn't work (Which I think it won't), you don't need to worry about restoring root. You just need to flash a custom recovery to revert your nandroid backup. Your root and customization will come back with that.
But with some of the added features that come with the update, I would say don't look back. Upgrade to the latest, then reapply your customization to get wallet and all working again.
IF you have to revert your nandroid back, make sure to do a factory wipe before you revert to your backup.
thanks! i'll give it a shot this weekend once i get more time.
I've used two different versions of Odin and two different T-Mobile stock recoveries (other one is here), and I can't get stock recovery to replace CWM on my GS3. Odin reports that the flash is successful, but when it reboots, ROM Manager still shows me as having latest CWM Touch, and the T-Mo update fails. I'm attempting the update via Kies right now, but I anticipate failure due to CWM still being installed as recovery.
-- I have Cerberus anti-theft installed, but I don't see anything about protecting recovery.
-- I have Busybox installed, but that shouldn't affect recovery.
Any ideas?
EDIT: Interestingly enough, where the OTA update failed, the Kies update went smooth as silk. Now to re-root and remove bloatware!

Im unable to update. I used Odin to flash the stock recovery, then downloaded the update via settings-> about device-> software update. Installing reboots the phone but then fails and reverts to current state. I can't update through kies also bc it just says "connecting", no errors. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling drivers but kies never completes connecting. Any help?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
EDIT: I uninstalled all my samsung drivers and Kies from "Programs and Features" in win7, deleted Samsung folders from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Reinstalled Kies and connected my phone to install the drivers. Kies was stuck in the connecting loop still, so I unmounted my sd card, turned on USB debugging and Kies finally connected and asked to upgrade. Upgrading at this moment.

well if you have the Latest Philz installed you can make the Back up then figure out how to unroot your phone completely then see if your phone will update and if it does just go back into Philz then re root your phone with the Re-root(SuperSU) option in the Philz Recovery settings then reboot your phone into the rom.....i know as nerds/geeks we want to find another way lol

I played around with the phone when I first got it, folks on here gave me steps on rooting and moding the wifi, which was a year ago.
is that an app called philz? if so where do I get it?
does philz run pre boot or while phone is on?
btw I have one of those custom pre boot apps do you need the name of that?

ok the philz install went smoothly
I used odin
strange the update notification is gone so I did a check for update, nothing happens
so I left it rooted till I get the notification again
I did not see on the philz cwm an option to un-root??
I am figuring my next steps will be
get the update message
un-root the phone (these two steps might be reversed un-root then wait for update message)
do update
then re-root with philz
verify my root and verify my sprint hot-spot mod still working if not reapply mod.
let me know if I am missing something, or is there a way to get that update?

well according @bilgerryan just having a custom recovery in general blocks the OTA that you need to be on completely stock to get the OTA
