well if you have the Latest Philz installed you can make the Back up then figure out how to unroot your phone completely then see if your phone will update and if it does just go back into Philz then re root your phone with the Re-root(SuperSU) option in the Philz Recovery settings then reboot your phone into the rom.....i know as nerds/geeks we want to find another way lol

I played around with the phone when I first got it, folks on here gave me steps on rooting and moding the wifi, which was a year ago.
is that an app called philz? if so where do I get it?
does philz run pre boot or while phone is on?
btw I have one of those custom pre boot apps do you need the name of that?

ok the philz install went smoothly
I used odin
strange the update notification is gone so I did a check for update, nothing happens
so I left it rooted till I get the notification again
I did not see on the philz cwm an option to un-root??
I am figuring my next steps will be
get the update message
un-root the phone (these two steps might be reversed un-root then wait for update message)
do update
then re-root with philz
verify my root and verify my sprint hot-spot mod still working if not reapply mod.
let me know if I am missing something, or is there a way to get that update?

You cannot updatee if you are rooted. If you dont want to update, I believe you can freeze the notification using BloatFreezer or similar. If you do want to update you can either (1) do so via Kies or (2) un-root and then update ota. Either way you will be unrooted and have to re-root
i did update to 2.3.6 when i received the OTA and I click update and realize that i am rooted (root using superoneclick). I let the update goes through and after few minutes, my sgs2 is updated to 2.3.6 with wifi calling and great battery life. I think i will stay stock rooted until Nick (dev for Miui vibrant) made Miui for SGS2
Edit: Like everyone said, every phone is not created equal. Like mine, got updated even its rooted

I've been a long time lurker, first time post.
I have been running the official AT&T ICS release I927UCLH2, and was notified of an update for my phone from Device Management. I am now updated to I927UCLJ3 baseband. To my surprise, my keyboard backlight is now working. So far, everything looks good. There is no sign of this update on the Samsung ICS page. Maybe AT&T is just going to push it out and forgo Kies altogether? Who knows?

Seconded here. Do we have to remove CWMR in order to update from the new OTA update?
I just got a software push from AT&T for my Captivate Glide. After the restart, the keyboard lights now work! About phone says: Android v. 4.0.4. Baseband v. I927ULCLJ3. Build number IMM76D. I'll see if other things have been fixed like, ringtones that stop working and clock being x time slow. Both of which required a system restart

I reloaded the stock recovery from my LH2 install and tried the OTA update. It downloads the update but fails to install with an "Update Failed" after the reboot.
I never rooted my phone only installed CWM for the Keyboard fix and to backup with CWM. Wish I had never installed CWM now.
Just got off the phone with AT&T myself, the rep said it should be available on Kies, they want me to try the new firmware before they'll continue warranty procedure on my wife's glide.
Edit: Well it's not, but it should be soon I guess.
Second Edit: On phone with samsung, they say the update is still "on hold" on his system. At&t told me to call them if I needed help with the firmware update.
Thanks for the info. Kies kept crashing on me so could not try it and OTA says I need to way 24hrs to try again.
Will try Kies on a second computer.
Is there any way to reset the 24hour AT&T update time without erasing the data partition?

I might have to try something similar since Kies nows says that "You device does not support upgrading via Kies". Since I did not root my phone it must either not be happy with the flashes I have done to recovery even though I have flashed back to stock recovery or the Keyboard fix I did.
This blows.
does anyone know if i flash with a stock AT&T from sam firmware on a Rogers i927(r) will I be able to update to the new AT&T version on Kies ?

Success!!
Here are my steps:
1. Restore a backup I made with CWMR before when I first installed it before making any mods.
2. Reinstall stock Recovery before doing anything else.
3. Get OTA update even though less than 24 hours since I restored a previous point in time.
Doing the stock ROM was my second choice but since I had a backup at least most of my apps and settings were recovered.
Good luck!
2.3.6 phone says no OTA update. I'll try Kies later.

I found an odin flashable I927UCLH2.md5 and used it, and when into settings, about phone, software update, and it gave me an update and I'm downloading it right now.
The phone is now at I927UCLJ3. So AT&T can OTA push it instead of trying to force the phone to work with kies

By following one of the many guides available, just make sure you use the right one for your model number. IE. Sprints Note 2 is SPH-L900, International model is GT-N7100, International with LTE is GT-N7105, etc to find your model number look in settings > about phone.

I did this by mistake and now I can't get the update even though I want it. How can I undo this and have phone download the update again?
OK, I think I figured it out. I found the update file in a backup I had done before clearing my cache. I restored the file to my /cache folder and told the system to update. It performed the countdown and rebooted into the recovery like it should have.
Now I've restored the stock recovery so I'm hoping that it will install the update next time it gives me the pop-up.

Heck, why even bother with unrooting and restoring the stock bootloader? Run the MA7 or MC2 all-in-one firmware zips in TWRP and install an MA7/MC2 ROM...you're not the only one I've heard of re-inventing the wheel like this.

I just wanted to make sure than an update is released, I'll know it. I am waiting for the 4.2.2 update. I read in another thread that if I hold my breath until I pass out, when I wake up, my phone will be updated. It hasn't worked yet so I'm obviously not doing it right.
In all seriousness, it was just something that wasn't right. I had already used run the MC2 All-in-One and it was working fine with the exception of the Build number, which still read MA7. That didn't bug me as much as the constant "you have an update" pop-up. My goal was to put the stock boot loader on so I could actually do the update for no other reason than to see if I could in anticipation of the 4.2 update. I got the stock boot loader back on but for reasons unknown to me, I hit the "clear cache/davlik" button, which wiped out the update. I had no idea it would do that. So when I got the countdown to reboot and no reboot on the update page... it just bugged me.
Fortunately, I was able to get the update file from a backup and place it back into the /cache folder. I then rebooted into the stock recovery and told the system to "Update from Cache". This ran the update without any problems. Root was regained using the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper. Now the build number also reads MC2, so that is a little bonus, and I still have root access. Who knows, maybe I'll put the recovery back on and try a ROM when I get home.
No functionality was gained from all this. All that was gained was knowledge as to how all this works. That's a good thing, isn't it?
Thanks for the reply.
I'm sorry i had the wrong links and because of this i had miss information. So i formally apologize by updating with the proper links.
this first method doesn't work with the Sph-L710T or the Sph-L710 on NJ2/NJ3
First method: You can root the stock 4.4.2 ND8/NDC:laugh:
1st. Make sure your on 4.4.2 ND8 or NDC
2nd. Download Towel Root
3rd. Place Towel Root in sdcard or internal storage
4th. With any file manager find and install Towel Root
5th. Open Towel Root and well root
6th. Go to play store and download https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu&hl=en and also https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en let super user update the binary
7th. Flash any recovery you want {personally i went with PhilZ Touch (this was before PhilZ had a root Option)}
8th. Enjoy your rooted stock 4.4.2 ND8/NDC
Down below is one more way too root Stock ND8/NDC/NJ2/NJ3 or NF4/OA3 (L710T) and basically any other update
(link to the almighty ODIN)
Second Method: mostly recommended
1st. Odin flash TWRP
2nd. In Odin choose PDA, PA or AP then select the TWRP Tar you just downloaded
3rd. Make sure Auto reboot is unchecked (also at this time your s3 should be in download mode)
4th. Hit start and let Odin let it finish!!
5th. Hold power button to turn off your S3, after it turns off about 10 seconds later it will turn back on to the battery charging screen so before that quickly hold Volume+ and Home, to boot into recovery
6th. now your in TWRP
7th. so to root your stock rom with TWRP flash the following file SuperSU.zip by Chain fire (pro tip. Install any other custom recovery the same way I did for TWRP above if it is in .tar format)
and here is Philz recovery for the D2Lte 6.48.4 ( which you must flash in TWRP)
and here is TWRP that was made specifically for the D2Rephersher/triband/L710T TWRP (which you must flash in a recovery)
Third method Most recent.
Hidyman said:
This is in reference to Samsung Galaxy S3 for Boost Mobile SPH-L710.
Just want to let anyone out there that updated their Boost S3 to L710VPUC0J1 know that you can still root and/or ROM your phone.
Use the instructions to (use Odin to) update the recovery to TWRP first (in the second set of instructions). I had trouble trying to go right to PhilZ Recovery (which I believe is based off of ClockWorkMod). I Had to do the TWRP (twrp-2.8.7.0-d2spr.img.tar) first.
It was the only way to get it to actually accept the recovery, not sure why, maybe because the latest Samsung firmware fixed an exploit or two.
This is an older phone, but it is still a viable one.
I hope this helps someone out there.
It took me a while to figure this quandary out.
As always this WILL flag KNOX, but I'm sure this won't be an issue at this date and time (8/2016).

i want to say yes but towel root does come with a warning that it might brick your device.....but i want to say yes since most things that can be done to the ND8 can be done to the NDC and also in reverse order.....so try it and report back it will be good to know if it works on both bootloaders
Sprint S3 Android 4.4.2 ND8-It works!
I just used this method to root my Sprint S3 running Android 4.4.2 and ND8, since my USB port is on the fritz, and it worked successfully. I have root, and was able to do a full apps backup with Titanium Backup, and gained root access in ES File Explorer. Next, download and install a custom backup. Thanks, great job, and could not have been made easier to do!

Ya know. People keep talking about ND8 and ND___. I have no idea what that means. I know I should be embarrassed.
UPDATE: FIGURED IT OUT, BASEBAND VERSION. GOTCHA. IT IS NDC.
I was JUST coming back to update my post. I DID update the PRL and restarted my phone. That seems to have done the trick. Thank GOD I got my data connection back!! It worked. Even though I found the info somewhere else, thank you so much for the quick reply. PRL update fixes the problem. You're awesome.

many users of basically the same phone report different things with every root method out there. If it worked for you that's great tell other users what you did for it to work and if it didn't work, then ask for help and you will get help; some people don't have success with any method while others do with all of the methods.....my phone falls under every method.....

Straight forward, fast and easy. I did notice the following:
1) Updating binary reported it did not successfully install. I've seen this before on other devices, but everything worked well. Ext SD and Camera all OK. Everything works fine so far - Titanium, Nandroid, Root Browser, etc.
2) At one point, I was directed to install Busy Box. Having done this on other devices, I said "Yes" and installed it.
3) I see that my device now shows Device Status as Custom ( was Normal before, if I remember correctly). Is this due to Busy Box?
4) Is Device Status the only way to know the KNOX Status? I see no yellow triangle as I did on my Galaxy Reverb.
5) I got a Google warning to uninstall Towelroot since it is usafe and a security exploit. I understand that.
I would like to verify the KNOX status and if tripped in the Towelroot process, to let potential users know of that possibility.
Thank You! And thanks to everyone who has continued to work on keeping root free!

Knox only notifies Samsung that your device isn't stock anymore not necessarily rooted like with a custom recovery and then flashed mods and what not but if you Odin the stock rom it resets the counters so Samsung will never know....and that i have noticed TowelRoot doesn't trip that counter.....only the recoveries and when you update the binary (<---completely forgot to fix that) you must hit the option normal not TWRP/CWM

That's great news because same boat here. It worked on 4.3 as well.
I had the phone hacked before and something must not be fully stock so the Ota fails.
I downloaded a package and mobile odin should flash it properly and then I can root it with this again and install a nice modified TouchWiz rom.

Thanks for your response. I may be over thinking these indicators. All I did was Towelroot, successfully. On the phone, the "About Device, Status" now says CUSTOM (was "Official"). The Knox counter according to app "Phone Info" shows Knox Counter at 0x0. As you said, since the counter is not tripped, should be no problem on warranty. So then Device Status CUSTOM is not a problem? I'm not really worried about warranty at this point, but I think I'll hold off further mods for another 6 moths.
Thanks again for your help!

Thanks. I tried the md8 and mk3 "mk3 is what it's on". Both just restart and get stuck on splash screen :/.
I have to go to download mode and and restart it that way to boot system back up.
Do you have any other suggestion. I'm not sure what part of the system is altered. It seems like a stock recovery and it's stock firmware "now rooted". Maybe the kernel.
I can't use USB at all.
I'm guessing maybe I should install twrp. Then install a stock zip or try out a 4.3 rom that way. I would like to get to md8 one way or another. Most md8 Roms want you to odin or flash an md8 base.

cause they need the ND8 base to work as intended...my suggestion would be to get the usb port on your phone fixed but i don't know how expensive that will be

I was afraid you would say that.
Holy crap. May I say, I am quite impressed. I never planned on rooting my S3 (I like it that much!) but this just looked so damn easy to do and it was!
For the curious! I have a Virgin Mobile S3, and I'm on Kitkat 4.4.2, baseband NDC. Verified root with Root Checker Basic. No problems with mobile data.
Many thank yous, 6th_Hokage!

added two more t=root methods
I rooted this tablet last week (just rooted, I left it stock) and this morning I notice there is a system update waiting to be installed. I am reading Lollipop is starting to roll out in Asia somewhere now but I am in the US lol. I thought it wasn't possible to get OTA updates once you root? If I allow this to update will I get unrooted, would it even work?
I foolishly allowed it to update after checking in Supersu to not allow the root to be lost and now I keep booting directly into TWRP lol. How do I wipe this tablet from TWRP so that it is fully stock again (NO ROOT)? I see a factory reset option in TWRP do I need to include all the partitions in the advanced wipe or is just the normal wipe method enough? Or will this not work at all? I already tried to restore the phone using TWRP to my backup and that didn't seem to work.

Simply rooting a device doesn't keep it from TRYing to update via OTA. Rooting can prevent an OTA from succeeding, plus can hard or soft brick if you try to take an OTA, although usually only if you've gone beyond just rooting by installing a custom recovery or changing the contents of any partition besides Data by, fire example, downgrading your bootloader (aboot.img) or modem, running a custom kernel, debloating system apps, etc.
There are at least three variants of the G Pad 8.3. I have the VK810.4G, which do you have?
I know on the VK810.4G, Verizon just released a very, very minor update from LG build #23A to 24A. Still KitKat.

There's the main problem, you had a custom recovery installed. OTAs are applied with the stock recovery, that's why it (probably soft) bricked it.

You might not be able to fix it from TWRP. You could try @autoprime 's fix recovery zip available the same page his flash2 scripts are. You'll have to Google:
autoprime flash2

.
Otherwise, you'll have to restore to 100% stock unrooted and start from scratch. Two methods.
One is using LG's official Mobile Tool, which will download the latest official ROM in KDZ format (takes 20+ minutes to download) and flash it with your tablet in Download mode (probably with the tablet off, hold both up and down volume buttons in and while holding them, turn the tablet on.
I've got to go do something so hopefully someone else will help further or I can get back to you later, dont know when though.
Good luck!

I did the TWRP terminal commands from the thread listed below and it got me right out of that jam...

OK now that I am up and running fine the system update message keeps popping up. This time I KNOW not to try and upgrade while rooted. Is there any way I can stop the tablet from constantly giving me the upgrade message? Can I do anything from TWRP to stop this?

Don't install TWRP. I was rooted (w/ stock recovery) with 23A, and the OTA update worked fine (still rooted).

TWRP is already installed..
Can I uninstall TWRP, keep root , do the update and then reinstall TWRP? If so how? Is there any other way around this issue, any way of not having the tablet continue to ask me to upgrade? Thanks BTW...

Yes, you can do that, but I don't know the steps. Others here do.
Why do you want TWRP? I thought the usual reason was to install custom ROMs (in which case you won't receive any OTA updates). If you just want to root, it's an unnecessary complication (as you have discovered).

Thanks Dean, and yes I do agree with you about it being a complication. I was always under the assumption if I rooted a phone that I needed to also use some sort of recovery god forbid I had an issue with the phone not booting up or something so I could possibly fix the issue, make a backup/install a backup etc. Maybe I will ****can it if someone will tell me how to do so without losing my data or root.
