System update downloaded, where is the file located? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I'm on a rooted stock rom, with unlocked bootloader. Somehow, a notification came up for the 4.4 upgrade, saying System Update Downloaded, click to install. I don't want to upgrade just yet, anyone know where the update file is located so I can delete it?

[Q] 4.0.4 OTA for stock recovery (locked bootloader) ?

Hello,
is there an OTA package which i can flash with a stock recovery (my phone i locked, i don't like to have an unlocked bootloader)?
I am on 4.0.2 right now...
No, you need to be rooted or unlocked to flash the OTA package. Just wait for the official one, it will probably be pushed sometime during easter
I'm still waiting for the OTA aswell
I was pretty sure that the OTA process just downloads a file which will be flashed via the stock recovery. So if someone would have this stock OTA package (update.zip) i can just place in the internal storage and reboot into stock recovery. At least on my HTC Hero at 1.5 -> 1.6 it was working this way...must have remembered something wrong there...

Haven't tried it myself (since I am rooted and unlocked) but I recon that you can unlock (and loose ALL your data), root, flash the onetime CWM Recovery, flash the 4.0.4 stock image (by which you will loose root), relock (and loose ALL your data again).
At the end you would be completely stock again. That can all be done through the GNEX toolkit by Mskip that can be found here: Link.
You can download the official Google image from here: Link

that was probably right with the htc hero, also on my htc desire..because the ota package was picked by the stock recovery from the sdcard
but the stock recovery on our galaxy nexus with ics, expect the ota to be on the /cache partition..without root u can't write in that partition, only the os itself can write there

If you are on yakju, root using this method (note you only need temp root, so only do up to step 6), then place the update file from here to /cache and reboot into stock recovery and flash.

Thank you
Btw. it's easier to just root the OS (go above step 6) instead of only go to 6...for the cp command you will need busybox...i have seen "cat" somewhere but i couldn't figure out how it works...but i seems to be that you can copy files without installing busybox since cat is supported from android at stock...

Correct, that is why I used cat in my directions instead of cp, as you would not have busybox installed if you are not root...
I'm still on 4.0.1
Is there any way to force an OTA update to 4.0.2 or 4.0.4 without rooting. Or manually install an update with a .zip update through stock recovery rather than CWM. I am unable to get any OTA updates it says my system is up to date which it clearly isnt.

[Q] OTA JSS15R While Rooted

Currently trying to update my Nexus 7 to JSS15R (8MB OTA that may have helped multitouch issue?)
I am running rooted stock ROM, unlocked bootloader etc. Current build number is JSS15Q.
I've heard the newer versions of SuperSU have the OTA fix built in. I haven't been able to update though. I noticed there was an update and I went to update my Nexus 7. It went to update like it should, but I got an error and it never changed.
Flashed the OTA fix thinking it would help. No.
Forced OTA update by stopping Google Framework. No.
Flashed SuperSU 1.65 and tried to update again. No.
Any suggestions on what I should do? Manually flash the update without loosing root or an data?
Did you reflash the ota after you flashed supersu?
What was the error message?

I read the new SuperSU versions have the OTA fix built in which allows OTA update.
When I initially went to update before everything, it rebooted then just came up with the "open android guy" with an error. Not sure what it exactly said, but I ran into the problem when I updated to JSS15Q.
I updated to JSS15Q by flashing the SuperSU OTA update fix with temporary TWRP. It then went through no problem. I followed that same method this time, but it didn't work.
When I did the j to q update while rooted the ota had an error as well. I had to install the full q rom from google. (I'm stock with root and I changed the system font) But this time around when I got the r ota I double checked what version supersu was runing and its at 1.65. I applied the r ota with no errors.

Yeah I'm running 1.65 currently, but the update won't show up anymore. Check for updates and there's nothing.

If its like the last issue with J to Q. You are updated but it doesn't show the name change in system. I could be wrong. It should have already been downloaded to your tablet. Check with a root explorer to find the ota zip or download the R ota found somewhere on this forum and manually flash it. I'm glad I didn't have to mess with anything this time around.

Not asking for sarcasm, just solutions. Will I lose root or any data? Or is it just like OTA update if I do it manually.

Stock recovery is on my device. I'm temporarily booting TWRP with the Nexus Toolkit so I can flash things.

Next time you have an error with stock recovery (android fallen down) press/hold power, then press/release VolUp, then release Power.
This will show you the error log.
As to your current problem, if your unit won't download and notify you about JSS15R download it by hand and place in your virtual sdcard, then temporary boot into tarp and choose install, selecting the ota zip.

Install the ota update.zip, then before reboot, immediately install supersu.
Do it that way and you won't lose root.

Any way to manually flash the update? Because SuperSU OTA isn't working.
So, you modified the build.prop, restore your backup of the original and it will work. Or flash the full factory image.

Now that you mention it I tweaked it with PimpMyRom. I'll take that off and try to update.
I am a bit late, but I tried fixed my build.prop to its original state and I still can't OTA update...
I noticed on stock recovery there's an option to update with ADB. Is there an update file I can use to just manually install the update? I know the JSS15R update didn't do much, but I would like to know for future reference and when Android 4.4 is released.

The same OTA update.zip you used before is used to do sideload in adb as well.
You'll also get the same errors if you have modified files.
If you post the errors, they can be diagnosed.
If you modified a lot of files, sometimes it is easier using the factory images.

Status 7 error, the log is posted in one of the above posts. I use "PimpMyROM" for a short while, which modifies the file. I deleted all the tweaks that went into the build.prop.

Unless you are very careful with your edit or made a backup, you need to get the real file. When you edit, even if you have an extra space left over, the sha1 checksum check will fail.

I'll probably just backup apps + data and use JSS15R factory image. Made the mistake of not making a backup of my build.prop.

If you are s-on, you can't flash anything custom or stock. You will need to root and s-off first. Or you could take the ota if all you want is the update. If you want to get some customization on there...you should do some reading through the threads. Things are a bit different since a few years ago and this phone doesn't have an external sd card...

First link is 100% stock and will work on stock recovery. Just place it on the phone storage or SD and boot to stock recovery. Choose the appropriate "apply update from" and then point to that file.

That is your stock recovery. Stock recovery is not meant to go into like custom ones. It's used for ota's, factory resets, and that's about it.

When flashing an OTA everything has to be bone stock. If you have stock tethering enabled, Xposed Framework installed, or files missing from /system/apps, it will fail.
That's a bummer. I'm totally stock. Just changed fonts, that's it. Guess it just won't go. thanks
I restored stock recovery and stock hotspot and the OTA still won't install properly -- I'm not sure what I'm missing. Is there any way to flash the OTA when rooted without wiping my phone?

In the past, simply restoring stock recovery, updating normally, and then flashing a custom recovery was enough. Doesn't seem to work this time, or there's simply some customization I've forgotten about.
If I'm not mistaken, just the presence of the su binary can be enough to abort an official ota. If you have the official OTA zip and attempt flashing through the stock recovery and it fails, the error message should give some indication of the problem. The script runs a check on the contents of /system and if anything is off it will fail.

Disable xposed. Flash stock recovery and take the ota. Then flash custom recovery via Fastboot and flash su.zip in Twrp.
Assuming of course you made no other /system mods other than root and xposed.

Unable to update to Android 5.0.2

Dear all,
I hope anyone can help me. I am trying to update to the latest Android version which I got OTA today. I have rooted my device and I am running TWRP (version 2.8.5.0) since some time. (Rooted it to restore some apps using Titanium backup). When I try to update using the OTA my device boots into recovery. When I choose install and select the downloaded zip file my device gives me the following error:
E: Zip signature verification dailed: 1
Disabling the ZIP verification doesn't work as I will just get another error message.
I have tried sideloading the ROM using adb commands but so far this hasn't worked either.
Anyone can give me some directions as how to continue from here? I would really like to update my device to Android 5!
Update with solution (for me):
What worked for me was downloading the OTA update like I would normally do. Then connect the phone to the computer and copy the downloaded update file to the computer (should be located on internal memory/download/). Once you have the file on your computer extract it, and then extract the file 'firmware'. Inside this second file should be a recovery.img. If you flash this recovery to your phone (no need to unroot or relock your bootloader) you will then be able to install the update.
That's because you need stock recovery to flash OTA. It won't work with TWRP because the OTA ZIP works different than a custom ROM.
Go back to stock everything and it'll work.
Or wait a couple of days till the boys here come up with a lollipop rom.
Ok thanks a lot, that'll help me I'll let you guy know if I run into any more problems.

Use these two files. First restore the stock nandroid using twrp (remember to choose NO when twrp prompts you to install supersu and root rom).
After you successfully restore the backup, flash stock recovery.
That should take care of it.

For now this zip is useless until have root. It's here to be available when we are able to use it.

OC4 odin Tar newest:
COMING SOON Waiting for Kies to update version

Update.zip INFO
In the past pre-rooting the zips was causing WiFi in to fork,so the zip is not rooted.
The update.zip and the actual cfg are almost identical with a few exceptions. They update identically using the same method.
Both use a series of update patches to inject new code in existing apk's some do get fully replaced but very few. So for this reason rooting using them needs to be done in a specific manner. You can thank Samsung/KNOX and SELinux for that.
How to upgrade with update.zip and keep root
It's best to be 100%stock before updating.
Remove SU app from system,do not remove the>>>>>>binary<<<<<<
Boot recovery,flash update zip,reboot
Install SU zip after rom fully boots and profit.
You...are...awesome!!!
Update.zip added.
what is this? I thought we only have a temp root

Now obviously anyone on these forums knows the deal here, if it's flashable it's risky, but this raises some flags that need addressed.
This is for the AT&T yes? If I'm not mistaken, this device has a locked bootloader, so then it goes without saying that your custom recovery flash only is untested. So is the expectation that users here are supposed to test it?
This is only the stock update put in a zip, then I cleaned some of the updater. This way if your on stock kitkat with custom recovery you can take the ota. There's zero risk here other than what Samsung messed up. I assumed it would be obvious we can use them yet because of not having root. I've done this a lot for several devices it's crazy easy to do,and you only need to change its zip and clean the updater.

You can't change the name extention or open the cfg .Put it on a sd, use stock recovery sd install option.

you can not update at&t version outside of US. I struggled a lot and finally gave up and installed lollipop (5.0.1) manually using files shared by the guys from here.

Plase follow the discussion there. Those all were my questions as well. You need to put each file in its location in Odin means you will use all files. My phone was unlocked and I dont remember my fw version. Please read the discussion there.
