Why no Linaro love for JB roms ? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Why arent any of the custom roms being compiled with Linaro toolchain ? I noticed a huge performance difference between non-linaro and linaro ICS builds,,,,

Need kernel and ROM to be built with linaro for the full effect. IMO.

Source hasn't been out that long. Not an overnight thing to optimize it.

Not sure why you havent built it with that chain. If you mean the other devs then maybe they dont want to. Give it a go yourself before asking others to do it for you.

Nope not really. Just tired of people asking others to do something for them before they even try to do it themselves. Remember this is a Development forum ment to teach people to do things themselves instead of asking others to do it for them.

No kidding, people always asking for help with everything like this is free tech support!

[Q] Gingersense kernals?

with all the new gingersense stuff coming out is anyone working on a kernal that is OC's cause the kingdom rom kinda needs it
I'm sure people are working on it... as always when something comes out, the devs here grab it and do what they want with it.. seems like a pretty rhetorical question..

i totally agree but i have noticed even a little OC on some roms makes a ton of difference on their performance
You need source code to compile a custom kernel.

HTC will release source after gingersense becomes an OTA, but its up to them when they want to post it really.

Just be grateful you even have a gingersense 3.0 port to play with. Download Juice Defender if you're really that worried.
I don't think 3.0 needs overclock works fine for me very snappy if u have the patience to let it fully load

I'm not sure what a KERNAL is. Sounds similar to a kernel Kidding . But kernels will be released over time. You don't necessarily need the source for a kernel, because you can look back to the OG Droid's FroYo leaks had hacked together kernels without any source and it was being overclocked.

It's probably possible to overclock with a module, like what the Droid X/2 are using. I'm no kernel hacker though, just a lowly porter
There is a tradeoff, however. If you want OC, the battery life will suffer even more than stock.
Best bet is to use SetCPU to set some profiles.
Great conversation but this thread is in the way wrong category. I really wish I was a mod...

color control on stock rooted kernel

As title.
Is it possible?
No, kernel must support this feature, but stock doesn't

yes. build stock kernel from source, merge color control code from other kernel. it's gpl. dont claim it as your own of course, should you ever release it.

i understood op wanted a stock kernel plus color control only. nothing else. no oc, normal gpu clock, etc. only way he can do that is to build.
but for sure, the most minimal of tweaking would consider such a kernel not stock anymore.

Because I want a stock experince.
Custom kernel's are often made by kids, generally they have features that I dislike and I loose the Google Experince that is the
reason why I have a nexus.

This is a pure asinine statement. If you want Google experience then leave it completely stock. Adding color controls makes it not the Google experience any longer.
Not to mention you are badmouthing every hard working dev out there.

[Q] Linaro

I've read that roms with linaro are faster. Are roms that are built with the linaro toolchain actually faster? Does it have any noticeable effect, or is it just like a placebo thing?
Thanks~
I'm on a linaro based coming from a non linaro base, and I think it feels faster and smoother... Could be placebo though. I'm actually going to take the next 30 minutes to read up on it. I'll be back.
Consensus is, no it not placebo, I've yet to come across any thing that is detrimental evidnece (I don't consider most of the benchmarks to be evidence) But I read about 6 pages and all gave info on how it compilies faster and helps the CPU act and process things faster. I'm noticing a little difference, but nothing to make you, mess (poo) your self.

Back when I was working on aospX with existz, we used the linaro toolchain (and then migrated to his custom toolchain based on linaro, because the most recent linaro toolchain at the time was a little buggy) and it made somewhat of a difference in things like scrolling and stuff like that... But that was for gcc-4.6. I have yet to try building with the recent linaro-4.7 for aokpX as I haven't really had the time, but existz says that performance with the latest android gcc-4.7 toolchain is about on-par with the linaro one so we've been sticking with the one from aosp.
Although, I think its up to the end-user to decide if the improvements are really there. The way I see it is.. if your device feels smoother to you with a linaro-compiled build/kernel, then what anyone else thinks about the toolchain shouldn't matter.

Linaro seems to be more efficient on battery, but dont quote me on this. "Efficient" is my word here.
I guess some of you have a passion for seeing -O3 on your compiler version.
a manta wrote this.

whats the difference between linaro versions and what does the linaro toolchain do?

Could someone explain it to me
linaro is just a different way of compiling roms etc.. and is supposed to be way faster than usual way its built just still same bugs if any at all my 2cents
Why do certain users freak when they see linaro built roms? (You know who I mean....LOL
Are there benefits for end users, or are the HUGE fans of linaro roms imagining themselves some performance gains? LOL
Been curious about this since I saw the word linaro in rom titles. And if it has no impact on the roms performance, then why put linaro in rom titles??

Linaro is a toolchain used to compile roms, ur PC uses this to take all the necessary files and puts them all together into what u know as a ROM, default is usually a arm-eabi toolchain, linaro is said to make the ROM smoother and faster than the default toolchain thus being more preferred

it's never too late to help someone out, but from what I understand linaro is a faster and more efficient way of compiling a ROM. I see no difference from a that is compiled using the linaro method and the normal method. It just makes it alot easier on devs.
