Water damaged software/ROM - HTC One X

My sister dropped her HTC One X in the toilet for a couple of seconds. After a while it restarted itself, vibrating and showed her the HTC logo, then restarted again and kept on doing so until the battery was drained.
I cracked it open and dried it for two days but the bootloop is still present. I think the hardware is intact but maybe the software got broken somehow.
However it is possible to get into hboot but it soon restarts again.
I thought that maybe i could flash a RUU exe but all the RUU's i can find has radio 1.x but her radio is 2.x. How come?
Please, does anyone have any suggestions or personal experience?
Thanks!

I don't see how the software could get damaged by that. Does she have a nandroid backup?
Sent from my HTC One X

no, her phone is not rooted, it's completely stock.
It is possible to flash a RUU exe even though it's S-ON and everything, right?

Yes it's possible to flash an RUU (or you could just wipe data from recovery), but it will 99.99% be a hardware fault.

i see..
maybe we should send it for repair then.. We're thinking about claiming the guarantee, but i heard about a water damage indicator sticker as in this picture. It seems we dont have that sticker in the sim slot. It's nothing there, just the black wrapper thing. Any ideas about that?

Yup, there's something in the device that detects if the device is waterdamaged. You could always try to get it on the guarantee, but chances are small.
Sent from my HTC One X

There's more to water damage checking than a bit of colour changing paper. When water dries it leaves residue and corrosion on parts will start.

So, is it completely crazy to think that the software got burned due to water on the memory hardware?

It's not crazy, but it is wishful thinking. A water damaged phone is usually beyond economical repair, if you send it to HTC, they'll likely charge you to send it back dead without looking at it.

Actually they don't charge for water damage (in the UK), and just send it straight back.

Well i live in sweden and we've got 1 year warranty from the reseller and 2-3 years from the manufacturer (HTC). We will try the reseller first, maybe they are a bit dumber than HTC.
The phone will be in a bag of rice for a couple of days to see if we can squeeze some more liquid out of it.
Thanks for the answers

Well, I live in Sweden also and are locked to 3. If I remember correctly, I have 2 years of warranty on my HOX at 3.

Warranty usually counts for nothing when water damage is involved.
If your device is restarting itself even in the bootloader then you definitely have hardware problems

[Q] Help - how/where to get HTC Desire repaired

Hi All,
Please can you help me. I bought a used HTC Desire a few weeks ago and was delighted with it - worked a treat and just like new. I then made the schoolboy error of taking it on a hiking trip - it rained like mad and a small amount of water got into the top of the case. Result - no power - phone won't start or anything.
I tried the rice method to dry it out and left it for 2 days - still no joy. I took the phone apart, noticed that at least one of the water indicators has been tripped (turned red). I rebuilt the phone, replaced the battery in case that was knackered - still no power.
Any ideas what I can do from here myself to fix the phone or eliminate what is preventing it from starting? I've been looking at repair companies - does anyone know of a good one? HTC warrently repair is out because of opened case/wateer indicator - and I bought the phone used.
Thanks,
Stewart
HTC will repair it but it could cost you. My desire is second hand and they repaired it for free but I didbt have water damage.

as a phone technician you have basically damaged the solder connections PCB.finite resoldering is not cost efficient as process is general mass production.HTC will replace board £100+.
sorry for bad news

believe it or not but condensation damage is actually far worse than a soaking.

Update - I've brought the phone into a repairer (not HTC). They've had a look and found the problem, it appears in trying to dry the phone out I managed to break a power connector/terminal on the mainboard. They told me that they will order a new part from the Far-East and apart from that the phone is in pretty good condition. Only a small drop of water got in so maybe I'll be lucky...

[Q] need help with microp issue!!!!

alright so i was driving, someone cut me off, my tilt2 fell off the center console into a cup of soda.
when i pulled it out i had the screen with the red, blue, green, yellow or whatever.
so i updated my driver on my computer cause im using vista, then i did a hard spl flash to put it back to the stock version. i left it plugged into my computer with it on the att world phone screen and it stays on that for about 10 minutes and then finally starts up, everything comes up fine including my previously loaded background but i get the apparently popular microp wrong version 0 message saying it needs to be updated. btw once it loads everything has extreme lag. i keep seeing that its a hardware problem but some people seem to fix it doing another hard spl flash (which ive tried and didnt work). now if it is a hardware issue, usually its from people dropping their phone on the ground hard or whatever, but would it be that from falling 8" into a drink (also heard htc makes their stuff waterproof???)
bottom line is the phone is still under warranty, but under my friends name who i bought it off of, do you think ill still be able to get it repaired under warranty or am i just screwed and have to buy another phone? or does someone have a solution to this problem?
Waterproof? Not even close! Whoever told you that is dead wrong. I think Motorola has a new phone that is very moisture resistant, that you can submerge it. But that phone is very unique in that regard. Cell phones are not typically waterproof, or even water resistant in any way. Dropping the phone in soda is absolutely the cause of your issue, and its a hardware problem.
Warranty will do you no good, unless your friend paid extra for the type of insurance that covers damage that you caused. There are moisture sensing stickers inside the phone (change color when they come into contact with moisture). Warranty service will know from these that you have water damage (in addition to soda being inside the phone!). They will charge you for the repair or a new phone.
Your best bet is to turn off the phone, take the battery out, and dry the phone out as much as possible. Some people put their moisture exposed phones in a plastic bag with rice, which is supposed to help dry it. Or put in a warm place (some say on top of the refrigerator). Dry it out for a few days, then try to power up again. Since you dropped it in soda, it may be a goner, since there is other gunk inside your phone now besides just water.

Tips for drying a htc one x?

Hi!
I dropped my phone a bucket of water today. Got it up quite quickly and dryed it with compressed air. It turned it self on and off during a period, but now it seems to work fine. But now I have moist behind the camera lens. Any tips for removing moist there?
Leave the phone (Switched off) in a container full of uncooked rice in a warm area. Should do the trick.

Turn the phone off completely from fastboot and put it in a bag of rice, sealed up for 3 days. Do not turn it back on until 3 days have past or you will further damage your phone.
Hello
I have the same problem, but worse. I dropped my OneX in a stream of heavy rain water by the road and its been in the water for about 10 minutes while i was searching for it all over. I was glad I found it and in the haste and panic because its just a couple of weeks old,i pressed the power button,to find it working alright, then the signal reception cut off,i unlocked the screen, turned the airplane mode on. I could do all this and then it went off. I took the Sim out, rushed home, immersed it in a bowl of rice. Would that do? Please help

The most important thing is to NOT power it on again, not for atleast 3-5 days, i'd let it be off for 5 days, in a bag of rice standing on an element(the heat stuff you have in every room). If you turn on the phone before it's all dryed, you will probably damage the internal hardware, you know electric stuff doesn't like water that much.

Well Ive called up the HTC support and they asked me to go to the center where they will diagnose it and tell me whats what.
All i can hope now is that they dont reject for service on my face
The problem esp. with the HOX is that since the battery is sealed in the unit, its not easy to disconnect when needed. So by the time one realises that its been under water, damage might have already been done as the circuits still get a charge from the battery. So like others said, its better to leave it alone in a bowl of rice for a day or so and pray.
Lets hope HTC do the needful and fix your phone...

Exactly. The thing i admired when i bought is what turned to be a disadvantage. The concealed nature of the phone left me worried sick.
Its been in rice for 16 hrs now and Im praying every minute. Hope HTC does whats needed. Il keep you posted. Thanks for all the help!
Hello! I went to the HTC service center after having the OneX in rice for 36hrs. The guy said they cant open it here and so it has to go to the headquarters of India for service and said he'll get back to me in a week or so. Upon asking he told me that a smiliar water damage issue came up to them and when they sent it to the Headquarters, the Head sent a new phone altogether to the guy. Now I have a bit of hope. Do you think i can?
They might send you a new phone. You will probably need to pay for it.

One last thing. HTC said that the battery, main board, the lcd,the touchscreen are all gone so all will be replace but at the cost i mentioned before. Do you think its worth going for? Considering it will became as good as a new one..?
400 is steep you might be better selling it as damaged and buying a new one

Thats unfortunate. I remember having a nokia (when color screen was pretty new) go in the washing machine. When is started it up afterward only 1/3 of the screen were visible. In due time function by function returned when the phone dried out and after ~3 days it was back to perfect state

Yes sir,i thought so too,and i contacted HTC and told them im a student who wouldn't be able to afford such a pricey repair and they have actually took it into consideration and the lady told me to wait a couple of days to confirm with her head/country manager for a 50% off on the repair. If that happens, will it be worth it?
Can use silica gel dry up?

My missus dropped her iPhone in a bucket of bleach, so it was found 3 hrs later, had to rinse it with water, strip it down, get a tub of rice and put the parts stripped down into tub, the rice draws all the moisture out of the parts. Put it back together after 48 hours and after 1 week everything on screen was A okay, good as new. Always worth doing this yourself to save Money, and insurance claim rise.

not working
i think it has water damage because he found it in the rain after loosing it xD
any other ideas?
eek, not good, is it insured?
Plug the phone into your PC, if it shows as apx in device manager it is a hardware fault, if you take the phone apart leave the main board in place, leave in a dry warm place for a week, u could use rice or a dessicant like the bahs u find in shoe boxes, this will dry the device out, there are also lots of shops that offer water damaged repairs services.
Ultimately tjo even if u repair it after water damage the phone will never be the same

Sounds like internal water damage caused and short circuit by powering the device on with water in it.
A friend of mine had the same exact problem, he had his phone insured though (not for water damage but he lied and said he was calling and it suddenly went raining, they actually believed that and he was given a brand new hox)

What do repair companies look for to see if warranty is void on phones?

I have a HTC one X, got the black screen of death. I assumed it was a loose connection as the phone is sometimes dropped. I found a forum online mentioning that its the motherboard thats faulty.
I had the phone fixed by HTC after the LED screen was shattered, this cost me around 140 quid. They sent me a refurbished phone, I noticed the screen flickered under certain colours but assumed it was a driver issue. I updated the phone and found 2 updates and seemed fine after that.
Then few days back I put my phone down for couple hrs and come back to it to find the screen is black. Apparently is the video driver shorting or something.
HTC basically gave me faulty phone, thats how i see it, just wondering if I was to send it off what do they look for to see if the case has been opened. Hopefully I can seal it back and they might not notice?
I wanted to fix it myself initially, because I have data on my phone thats not backed up.
Also is the motherboard replacement under warranty or?
Hello.
If you open the phone, i would assume they can see its been opened before. This can be done in many ways. Some screws show signs of having been removed, and scratches on the top of the screws also indicates this.. Then there are the "warrenty if void" stickers across places you need to breach.
Do you plan on opening up the phone? From what you write you have not yet opened the (faulty) phone you got from them, as a replacement? If they gave you a faulty phone, they did not fix the issue with it (you still have issues), and then i believe it should be straight forward to return it. Simply telling them what you write here (got it, noticed wierd stuff, updated it and then it seemed fine, but now its dead). The phone never REALLY worked, after you got it back (refurbished = phone returned to HTC that they send out to other customers as "NEW" while its in fact "CLEANED AND AS-GOOD-AS-NEW" - right?)
My advice would be to NOT OPEN the phone, start by having them replace it. If THAT fails, you can resort to opening it yourself.
Kind Regards
TwinAdk
The problem was I was kinda impatient, and assumed it was a loose connection. Also I have data on the phone and was convinced I could fix it myself (have done other phones). I know when you send the phone off they get wiped before any work is done on them.
I have opened it, there was one screw at the top of the phone with a void print on it. I didn't scuff the screw and was put back in the exact same place.
There was no void stickers or tags to move, the only thing was the battery was stuck down to the base of the phone. It's now loose, i was hoping if i just stick that back and send it off they won't notice anything. There's no marks inside or outside of the phone, look new still.
AW: What do repair companies look for to see if warranty is void on phones?
Well I think there is no way to get a new phone, because you bought a refurbished phone. There is a warranty on refurbished phones, but I'm pretty sure that its nearly impossible to proof that it was their fault or already damaged when you got it.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app
I bought the phone brand new from a phone company (in store), since then I've had the phone fixed 3 times. Twice was my fault, but the other fault was the touch screen buttons on the bottom of the phone. They were no longer responsive.
I basically shattered the LED screen, sent it off to HTC, paid 140 quid for repair and sent me this crappy refurbished phone back. This one had the flickering issues and eventually fried the motherboard. Something about shorting the video driver i read in another xda thread.
