[Q] Accessing service mode on CM9 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys,
So I have the WiFi problem with my S3; whenever the phone goes into sleep, it for some reason needs to cycle the WiFi connection when waking.
This is incredibly annoying - whenever the phone goes into sleep, I have a 5 second freeze before I can actually unlock it due to the wifi dropping and such.
So the solution when I was on TouchWiz was simple: enter the service mode, through the phone menu, doing *#0011#, and turning off WiFi Power Save.
Now this is all fine and dandy (even though that stupid setting wouldn't stick on reboot, I could always re-enable it) but now that I've flashed CM9, doing the *#0011# code doesn't work anymore - nothing comes up at *all*.
I'm on the current nightly (7/24). Now I'm no Android expert or anything, but I *think* I need the Service Mode application from Samsung to access the service mode menu.
I have backed it up through TitaniumBackup, but I can't restore it. It seems to hang whenever I restore it, which I would think is expected since I did get a warning that I wouldn't be able to restore system apps on a different ROM.
Can anyone help? Is there a way to do that? Or to at least turn off WiFi Power Save, even if it's temporary?

+1 same problem with cm10. Driving me absolutely insane.

[Q] 3g Mobile Network Issues

A lot of times lately I'm losing my 3g Mobile Network, my signal strength will be a full 4 bars and I still get the issue. Usually if I reboot the phone it will come back. I'm starting to think it gets lost after it connects to WiFi and then when I disconnect WiFi. Anyone having this issue? If so, are there any tricks to getting this to stop?
My phone is completely stock 2.2, no root.
I'm not sure which of these events may have triggered my intermittent lack of 3G connectability but these are the only changes I've made since this started happening:
1) Upgraded to Froyo.
2) Performed the .dun trick to allow 3g Hotspot. (Although I never use it, I tested it a few times but this problem happens without the Hotspot turned on.)
Did you do a factory reset after the froyo update?
Sent from my Incredible using tapatalk.
Nope, I used the SD card method before I got the OTA. Have never done a factory reset.
I have this as well, be it im on a different carrier (Cricket) but it appears in all stock htc froyo builds.
My assumption is that is the radio being used. of how HTC's implementation of Froyo interacts with the radio.
I switched radio's and havent had it occur on me while in the OS yet, and it does occur sometimes on boot still, but if it loads on boot it seems to stay up and stable.
My trick is to turn airplane mode on for about 30 seconds (30 seconds after i see the airplane icon), then turn it off, i assume this reloads the radio, when the brings 3g back.
I can also read my nv settings with qpst and reflash them back to the phone with no changes, which causes the radio to reload as well, and 3g ALWAYS kicks back on.
Also updating the PRL (even if its the same PRL) seems to work as well (assuming this is due to the reboot, which reloaded the radio)
The radio i am using now is:
2.15.00.09.01 - Seems pretty stable, except the occasional one of at boot, which is fixed by airplane on/off.
From what i can gather this nothing to do with custom roms, as many offical Verizon customers on Official NON Rooted 100% completely stock phones have this as well.
Hopefully HTC/Verizon will fix this in a MR update.

I'm gonna try that next time it happens. Easier than rebooting, then it wont bother me too much.
I had that problem once, and never saw it again.
One problem that just happened for a second time today is I cannot send or recieve MMS. HTC had me reboot the phone and call VZW support, of course they yelled at me for not using a task killer -.-
The reset worked, but I'm going to get annoyed if this becomes a regular problem
I have same setup and same issue. As soon as I made the EPST changes for tethering and hotspot, I started having this issue where I'd lose my data connection completely after disconnecting from my wifi when I leave my house. A reboot of the phone fixes it but it's still kind of annoying. It happens I'd say about twice a week.

[Q] Xperia Play Wi-Fi Only

I live in Canada.
I only want an Xperia Play as a wi-fi only device, to play emulators, listen to music, take pictures, just something I can have with me on trips and use as a mini-android tablet. I do not have a cell phone, I don't plan on using it as a cell phone, I don't really like cell phones. I never plan on putting a sim card in this thing ever or making a single phone call on it.
I ordered a Verizon Xperia Play from eBay because it was super cheap compared to everyone else.
My question is this:
Will I have to do anything to this device to use it as I have stated above? Or will I just be able to use it right away.
Thanks very much for the help.
If thats the way you want it, you'll have to disable mobile data, and background data. This will keep it from trying to connect to anything.
The cell radio will stay on for the emergency call feature. But this can also be completely disabled if you turn on Airplane mode. Which disables everything. you can turn this off when you want to connect to Wifi.
Thanks very much, that was very helpful and concise. Cheers!
Actually, you can turn airplane mode on, and then turn WiFi on. You don't need to go out of Airplane to do that....
This is how I use my Xperia Play. I don't have a sim card in it. I leave it in "Airplane mode," and then turn on WiFi when I need it. I leave "Background data" enabled so I can access the Android Market when WiFi is up. Also FPse needs to check in every now and then, or else it goes into limited mode. I think Background data needs to be enabled for this to happen. Airplane mode keeps battery usage low so I can keep playing.

Thanks for all these replies, very useful and will help me enjoy my new toy to the fullest.

Really? Didn't know that, thought airplane mode stopped thing from being enabled.
Yes you can turn on WiFi while in Airplane mode. It keeps the cell radio, GPS, etc off.

Ok then guess I'll recap for the OP:
Turn on Airplane mode
Thats is all. Aparently you can keep background data enabled, it just won't do anything until you turn on Wifi, which works when airplane mode is turned on.
Problem solved.
Thanks, at least I know I don't have to do major modifications. I had visions of a nag screen preventing me from using the device if there was no sim card in it.
Well technically theres no nag screen, but you will have an error in the status bar saying that there no sim card.
Yeah, that's not a big deal.
r800x doesn't require a sim card period lmao so you'll never get that message
Well that's good to know too.
Fine he'll get an error saying no network connection....picky picky.....

Actually I have a CDMA R800x that I use this way and I don't get that error. Then again I am rooted running Turbo Kernel with P.A.C. Man rom.
Maybe that's why?
Before I unlocked my bootloader though, I don't remember ever getting an error message. I do remember everytime I rebooted there was a nag screen that said "your phone is not activated would you like to activate it?" but the choices were activat or skip.

No WiFi on startup

With ICS when I first turn on my tablet, the WiFi often does not connect, even when the signal is strong. WiFi is on, but it does not connect until I turn WiFi off and then back on or manually select my home or office network. Once in a while this happens I turn the tablet back on after it has gone to sleep.
I tried restoring to factory defaults and it fixed the problem for a few weeks. But it has come back again. Has anyone seen this problem and found a solution?
I am using the OTA version of ICS.
I have also had this problem on occasion, but it seems to be happening less and less which is strange. I haven't gone to the effort of resetting my tablet.
There are many little quirks in ICS that I think will need ironing out with an update. Whether Acer think it worth their while is another matter.
I am on stock ICS - Rooted.
I know its not a fix, but normally I just toggle airplane mode from the system bar. Seems to be the fastest way to get it going. It happens on about 25% of cold boots to me.
Been happening to me every reboot since ics. Another incomplete release.

[Q] Problem with my SGS3 - Wifi/data turning off and on.

Hey everyone,
hopefully someone here is able to help me. I'm having a problem my SGS3, everytime I do something with my unit like go into system settings, play a game etc, the wifi drops as does the data, then reconnects. It'll do this over and over. I've had this problem on TW roms and AOKP, I've tried fixing permissions flashing the stock AT&T drivers kernel and nothing seems to fix this. Do I have a defective unit? Anything I can do to test this out for sure?
Edit: Well it seems it's not the data, just the wifi. After a certain amount of inactivity it'll just disconnect and reconnect. The signal is pretty strong (full bars), if I just leave the phone idling on data it's fine no disconnects.
Are you using an APP like "Juice Defencder"? My son has it installed and it was causing WIFI to drop once the battery got to 79%, it was set to "aggressive". I have them same phone SGS3, running the same ROM, d2att JB build and have not had the wifi issue. Also on Task650 JB I dont have to do the wifi power save trick, if you are on Stock, try this
on the phone window enter the following:
-dial *#0011#
-hit the menu button
-select "wifi"
-turn off the WIFI power save mode
you will have to this every time you reboot. or you can load Tas650 JB...good luck

Thanks for the reply, I don't have any battery saving apps I've always got great battery life out of the phone.
I'm on a touchwiz rom. Serenity 1.1 same problem. I flashed back to stock. I tried what you posted and unfortunately it didn't work. The wifi will randomly connect/disconnect, tried 5 different routers/networks all with perfect signal strength and the wifi is still dropping . If I leave data on and turn wifi off its fine, no data drops. I might have to send it in for repair... I'm trying to register it via the samsung website. Maybe someone could answer me where I can find the model code? I no longer have the box (mistakenly discarded during a move).

I was thinking the same thing! Great info! :highfive:
I actually found a video of the exact problem I have:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=FBo3NFdcMhs#
Also noticed that if I'm constantly using the wifi it won't drop so now that I'm surfing it'll be fine, but if I idle for too long it'll drop.
Has anyone got any more solutions to try?
Is there a script somewhere that will keep wifi power save mode off?

[Q] Perplexing Problem with CM 10.1.2

I have a perplexing problem with two phones that I have. The issues is, when the phones go to sleep (either by timing out while on battery or when I hit the power button on the phone to turn off the screen), the CDMA radio will shut off after a while and won't turn back on until I perform one of the following:
1. Reboot
2. Make a phone call
3. Send a text message
4. Switch in and out of airplane mode.
I know when it's off because I will suddenly get a flood of text messages when I perform any of the above tasks.
I thought originally this was something wrong with my phone (maybe too much flashing), so I got another Galaxy Nexus (Sprint). Unfortunately, it does the same thing. If I keep it on a charger and do not turn the screen off, everything works fine.
The phones are a Galaxy Nexus that works with Sprint. Since I don't know when it happens, I captured a logcat of the phone overnight after I turned the screen off. The next morning, I had to dial out to "wake" the phone.
I have factory reset the phone, flashed another rom (it seems to happen to anything that was based on CM), All these have happened multiple times trying to fix the issue. I have wiped dalvik and cache with no avail. Is there something I'm not trying?
I tried looking around to see if anyone else had this problem, but came up empty.
Perhaps someone had had this problem as well and can direct me to a fix.
Logcat: http://www.darktremor.info/logs/logcat.txt
Thanks.
