[Q] 3g Mobile Network Issues - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A lot of times lately I'm losing my 3g Mobile Network, my signal strength will be a full 4 bars and I still get the issue. Usually if I reboot the phone it will come back. I'm starting to think it gets lost after it connects to WiFi and then when I disconnect WiFi. Anyone having this issue? If so, are there any tricks to getting this to stop?
My phone is completely stock 2.2, no root.
I'm not sure which of these events may have triggered my intermittent lack of 3G connectability but these are the only changes I've made since this started happening:
1) Upgraded to Froyo.
2) Performed the .dun trick to allow 3g Hotspot. (Although I never use it, I tested it a few times but this problem happens without the Hotspot turned on.)

Did you do a factory reset after the froyo update?
Sent from my Incredible using tapatalk.

Nope, I used the SD card method before I got the OTA. Have never done a factory reset.

I have this as well, be it im on a different carrier (Cricket) but it appears in all stock htc froyo builds.
My assumption is that is the radio being used. of how HTC's implementation of Froyo interacts with the radio.
I switched radio's and havent had it occur on me while in the OS yet, and it does occur sometimes on boot still, but if it loads on boot it seems to stay up and stable.
My trick is to turn airplane mode on for about 30 seconds (30 seconds after i see the airplane icon), then turn it off, i assume this reloads the radio, when the brings 3g back.
I can also read my nv settings with qpst and reflash them back to the phone with no changes, which causes the radio to reload as well, and 3g ALWAYS kicks back on.
Also updating the PRL (even if its the same PRL) seems to work as well (assuming this is due to the reboot, which reloaded the radio)
The radio i am using now is:
2.15.00.09.01 - Seems pretty stable, except the occasional one of at boot, which is fixed by airplane on/off.
From what i can gather this nothing to do with custom roms, as many offical Verizon customers on Official NON Rooted 100% completely stock phones have this as well.
Hopefully HTC/Verizon will fix this in a MR update.

I'm gonna try that next time it happens. Easier than rebooting, then it wont bother me too much.

I had that problem once, and never saw it again.
One problem that just happened for a second time today is I cannot send or recieve MMS. HTC had me reboot the phone and call VZW support, of course they yelled at me for not using a task killer -.-
The reset worked, but I'm going to get annoyed if this becomes a regular problem

I have same setup and same issue. As soon as I made the EPST changes for tethering and hotspot, I started having this issue where I'd lose my data connection completely after disconnecting from my wifi when I leave my house. A reboot of the phone fixes it but it's still kind of annoying. It happens I'd say about twice a week.

4g Radio Won't Stay On (Toggles on/off forever)

Got a strange issue here. My wife and I have had evos since release and 4g worked fine on both when we got them. We're in Boston and since Boston didn't have official 4g until last week, neither of us have used the 4g radio until we read that boston was flipped on last week. On both evos, we're finding that when we toggle 4g on, it takes the normal ~20 seconds to turn on and then it scans for a second or 2 before turning itself off. After turning off, it turns on again and repeats this on/off routine indefinitely. I am only able to stop the loop by pressing the "4g off" button while the radio is scanning for a few seconds. The radio then turns off and stays off. On my wife's phone, the scanning only happens for a split second so it's almost impossible to stop the loop. Her battery dies in ~4-5 hours because of this.
Both evos are stock 2.2 and both pretty different launcher/app setups. I've tried removing common apps between the phones with no luck. I'm at a loss for what might be causing this. I've searched and found this thread but there is no solution:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-support-troubleshooting/158160-4g-failed-connection.html
Next step is to call sprint but that is always a last resort. Any ideas?
that's pretty weird. From what i know this happens when you root and flash roms/kernels. Your mac address gets changed. I'm having the same issue atm, but my evo is rooted.
Either your mac address was changed for some reason, or your rsa keys are gone.

i read about people losing 4g due to rooting issues and keys getting lost. but from what i read, it seems these people are able to turn on their 4g radio without issue but it just scans forever even though they are located within range of a 4g tower. i'm seeing something different here. the 4g radio goes into an on/off loop and barely scans at all.
Not sure I'll be much of a help, but....
Make sure you are outside in a guaranteed coverage area. 4G signal doesn't have the penetration or range of 3G/EV or 1x Voice radios. Confirm that you have 4G signal in that area with someone else who has a 4G capable device.
Then, if that doesn't help, you can go for more extreme methods, such has completely reset one of them back to factory, redo your data profile and test again.
If that doesn't work, you'll probably be stuck with calling Sprint.
If it were me, I'd do the outside and confirm 4G first, then call sprint and see if they can refresh your profile or something before going to the extreme of hard resetting back to factory.
Just because the maps say you have 4G, doesn't mean you do right where you are. There's an app in the market that folks are using to find actual coverage, called Mapviewer by Sensorly. That may help you see where others have reported good signal.
GL!!!!!
thanks for the tips. when i was playing around with 4g back when i first got the evo, i found that i could turn the 4g radio on even when there was no 4g signal and it would just scan for a long time. is this still how it is supposed to work or did they implement some auto-off feature such that the radio turns itself off if it doesn't see a signals after a second or 2? because right now, the 2 evos in my house turn off immediately after turning on and then continue the on/off loop. so it doesn't seem like i can get the evos to behave properly even without 4g signal. i may try calling sprint to try the data reset.
I would give it some time to ramp up - I started in another thread how all of a sudden I'm getting 4G in NJ - and we're not supposed to have it yet at all. I can connect, but it just cycles through connected and diconnected (making it essentially unusable). I would imagine it will begin to normalize after a while.
edit - misread the op, sounds like you're having a different kind of issue. nm
Also, that is how the antenna works - it will keep scanning indefinately until either the battery is dead, or it connects.

nah he's having the same exact issue as me.
Here is the order of what happens:
1. Turning on...
2. Scanning...
3. Authenticating with sprint.. (sometimes you see this, sometimes you dont)
4. Turning off
5. Go back to 1, and repeat
^^ From what he said, that is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. And that's the same problem I'm having with rooted phone.

that's pretty much it except i've never gotten to the authenticating part since this issue started. also, my phone scans for a few seconds before the 4g turns off. my wife's phone turns off almost instantly after the radio finishes turning on. this is the biggest issue because there is no way to interrupt the loop on her phone. even a reboot with battery pull doesn't stop it.
performed a hard reset on my wife's evo and that fixed it on her phone. mine will be tricker because of customizations. what a PITA.
called sprint and the tech support basically said the 2.2 update has caused lots of problems and they are waiting for "htc and android" to release fixes. so, of course, not sprint's fault at all. she told me just to use 3g and not 4g. pathetic.
did the hard reset on my evo and now the 4g radio won't turn on at all. it just sits on "turning on 4g..." for a few minutes before coming back with "unable to start 4g". i've tried 3 different types of hard resets (buttons, clear storage, and ##786#) and all with the same result. sprint is telling me my phone may be hosed but they won't give me a replacement because a fix is supposed to be released eventually. ugh...
Did anyone find a solution to this problem?
I was in Las Vegas on Friday, and 4G worked fine, but since then my 4G is doing what the OP said. I haven't changed anything in the Rom or Kernel.
Thanks!

[Q] After official update, defy wont even charge or connect to 3g, any help?

Okay, heres my situation. Before I updated, I was running 2.1 stock, never rooted or made any mods. Then, I updated to the TmoUSA Defy 2.2 update (the one that was briefly released), and now I can no longer connect to 3g/ have EXTREMELY bad 3g reception.
Also, I can no longer boot into recovery mode (power button + volume down). When I see the Android figure with the "!", nothing happens when I touch the bottom left of the touch screen? To originally flash the 2.2 update, I simply went in to recovery, and flashed the update.zip. Im doing nothing differently now, and can no longer get into it.
My main issue I am having though, is with 3g reception. Im in the exact same spot of my house, and used to have 4 bars of 3g, and would get about 1.5mbps down, and now, Im forced onto Edge, which obviously is over 10 times slower -_-
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

UPDATE:
Okay, this is AWFUL. I did a full reset through the recovery, and cleared the cache. But that did not help at all. On top of that, my issues are worse.
My phone cannot connect to 3g, I went to my school, and there are several cell towers on campus, and I always had full bars of 3G service. And guess what? I didnt get a single bar, just 2g service.
New problems occurred, now the phone gets hot, with no programs running. I tried restarting, but that didn't work. Second, my phone died in about 2-3 hours with little to no use, 1 txt thats all. And it DOESNT CHARGE AT ALL. At first, it took a few hours to charge from 20% to full, and now, I tried charging after school, and its stuck at 0%?
Is there any way to downgrade to 2.1, including the baseband? Should I contact Motorola? I've never rooted it, just installed the official 2.2 update for the US, the one that was briefly released (deeply regretting it now :'( )
Try pressing both volume up and down at the same time when you see the android guy. They changed it from touching lower screen in the upgrade to froyo
Then once in recovery do a restore reset and see if that helps.

I presume you are indeed on T-Mo US? I'd start by calling their tech support, just get elevated to upper tier. Then give Moto a shot. Have you done an Operator selection search? If you go into the INFO menu -- dialer > *#*#4636#*#* > Phone information, scroll down to Preferred network type, it should say GSM auto (prl) to get 3G reception. If not, try changing it.
Bump? Any help would be great, I just sent an email to Motorola, but probably wont get a reply for a day or two. I can't even use my phone, it dies within 2 hours, doesn't charge, and wont even connect to 3g.....

Thanks! I'll try that as soon as I can turn on my phone :'( Seriously though, thanks a lot. I am going to try that as soon as possible, but as of now, its been "charging" for 4 hours now, and it still just shows the picture of the battery @ 0%, and wont boot. I honestly have no idea, I tried a few different micro USB chargers, with no luck. When I used my Galaxy S charger, it showed a "?" instead of a %", as if it was not even recognizing the battery.
I assume you have tried the charger that came with the phone and have also tried it connected to USB on a computer?
Have you tried reformatting the SD card (or tried another) -- that may affect boot. And/or have you tried booting w/o SIM? I know you updated, but it could be a coincidental battery failure.

Yes, that could be. But then again, it hasn't connected once to 3g after the update? I'm going to guess I have a battery failure, I kinda had a feeling that it might be that. It was so sudden though, I got great battery life, that lasted at least a full day to 2 days. And then after the update, it would hardly last 2 hours. The phone was also constantly warmer than usual, but I didn't have anything running. Im just going to hope that it was coincidental, and that right after I updated it, my battery died, and I didn't have it on GSM Auto (prl).
Welcome to my world...... I finally got to the point where I could only get Edge... Phone got replaced under warranty.

[Q] Anyone having network issues, radio problems?

I am on my second International HTC one X and both devices would lose the carrier signal quit often... I would either go to airplane mode, or turn the network off and on and it would grab it again. Sometimes it would be good for the day and other times, I would have to do it a few times....
I wanted to think it was my carrier having issues (MTS in Winnipeg MB Canada)... however, this has never happened on my many other devices. Now I wake up today and turn on the mobile data, after awhile... it does not connect, under settings it says disconnected because service is unavailable. I tried reboots, restart, airplane mode, checking apn settings.... on my last reboot, it says No signal/emergency calls only.
So now I am fearing a hardware issue (but I find it odd it happens on both my one xs).
I love this device and aside from this potentially huge issue.... I have no complaints, so I will ask here and see if you guys have any solid input.. before I contact htc!
I also popped my sim in and out, as of right now...
Thx in advance.
**update: it almost seems like putting wifi on, knocks out my carrier signal.... after an hour of doing the above things, I turned off wifi, went to airplane mode and now my signal and data is there (it makes no sense) and it is quite a hassle
The weirder part is, it seems to only be in the morning.... once I am up and running, I do not seem to have many issues through out the day, but If I put wifi on long enough... It goes to no signal/eventually....
If I do not put on wifi, it either does not drop.... or I am not noticing.
I've just begun having network problems but I'm not sure it's related to your situation. I'm in Australia on the Optus network.
It happened suddenly yesterday. Service completely cuts out for extended periods. It will occasionally come back on for a short while (long enough to download all my sms) but will then cut out again. When the signal does briefly come back in, the signal strength is decent: it's an all-or-nothing proposition.
Did you manage to resolve your situation? Would be interested to know what resolved it for you.
I've had this phone since early April when it was released here and the is the first issue I've had with it. I haven't done anything new to my phone in the past week so I'm finding this strange. I'm running Leedroid 4.0.0 but I've had that installed for weeks without issue. I'm worried it could be a hardware issue.
I'm going to try reflashing it tonight to see if it's a software issue.

No WiFi on startup

With ICS when I first turn on my tablet, the WiFi often does not connect, even when the signal is strong. WiFi is on, but it does not connect until I turn WiFi off and then back on or manually select my home or office network. Once in a while this happens I turn the tablet back on after it has gone to sleep.
I tried restoring to factory defaults and it fixed the problem for a few weeks. But it has come back again. Has anyone seen this problem and found a solution?
I am using the OTA version of ICS.
I have also had this problem on occasion, but it seems to be happening less and less which is strange. I haven't gone to the effort of resetting my tablet.
There are many little quirks in ICS that I think will need ironing out with an update. Whether Acer think it worth their while is another matter.
I am on stock ICS - Rooted.
I know its not a fix, but normally I just toggle airplane mode from the system bar. Seems to be the fastest way to get it going. It happens on about 25% of cold boots to me.
Been happening to me every reboot since ics. Another incomplete release.

Random reboots when in certain coverage area

I just had a weird problem start the other day. I was at work and my phone constantly rebooted throughout the night. When I left for the weekend it didn't do it at all again until I was driving past where I work. And now at work again it is rebooting over and over. My phone is rooted and I am using miui rom.

This has been happening to me since switching to CM11. Every day on my commute to and from work the phone reboots when I drive through a particular area. I spent two hours in that area yesterday and my phone boot looped the entire time.
I am having the exact same problem. I thought I was going crazy, but I can literally repeat the reboots by walking to certain areas in my apartment building and on my commute to work, however not a single reboot the whole day at the office. SO STRANGE!
I'm glad I'm not the only one, I don't even know where to start, I haven't changed or downloaded anything on my phone in months.

I have done multiple roms, changed network variables and even odin'd back to stock...still happening.
I temporarily loaded stock and updated PRL and profile, yet the problem is still occurring. Logcat is useless because it rotates at startup, unless someone is aware of another way to see old logs?
I posted this on the CM thread, but figured it might help here as well. I connected my laptop on the drive home and captured logcat right up until the phone started rebooting. Maybe someone can make sense of this. Thanks in advance.
Wow, I thought I was going crazy! Same thing is happening to me as well.
Any updates? I'm still having this

This is familiar to the problem I've been having on my phone running MOAR. The battery died while I was at my house and ever since I get constant reboots if I run DKP kernel, I flash the stock kernel bundled in the MOAR ROM and the reboots stop but I get not signal within a half mile or so radius of my house. I flashed back the stock ROM and modems and radios of all versions but nothing helps. I got the MSL code and did a reset via the ##786# menu but that didn't help. Sprint said it's probably a tower upgrade that's going on but other Sprint phones get signal/reception without any problem and they won't replace the phone because of a small crack on the screen.

Do you mean ##72786# ? Did you try updating your Modem to MK3 ? You can find it HERE.

I've done both resets. There's another option in ##786# that wipes everything and reinstalls the ROM and reactivates the phone. I've tried the MK3 modem with no luck. Last night I was able to get the phone into LTE only mode in the ##3282# menu after several tries and the connection was stable, in CDMA only mode it disconnects constantly and reboots occasionally, same with CDMA/LTE mode. The problem with LTE only mode is that LTE is not available everywhere yet.

Having the same issue since last week. I installed CM 10.2 and accidentally triggered the knox warranty, so can't even take it back to Sprint now. Afraid to go back to stock, as I've read that I may brick my phone. Stuck with constant reboot loop at home (unless I turn airplane mode). Has anyone found a fix? Please help... about to go to t-mobile and switch providers!
PS: Does anyone know how I can apply the ##72786# in CM 10.2? Is it possible?

I don't think dialer codes work on CM. I got the reboot loops to stop by flashing a different kernel but by doing this the phone has a very hard time keeping a connection to the tower. I noticed last night that the phone seems to have a problem connecting to LTE or eHRPD even if it's in CDMA only mode but seems fine if I go into ##DATA# and using my MSL code I change the network to EVDO only mode.
I'm also experiencing similar characteristics of an on going reboot. My phone has been doing this for the past two days, I've reverted to the stock ROM, updated my PRL and yet I'm in a constant reboot. I went to Sprint and they offered to re-install the stock ROM for a fee ($75), I laughed while the friendly consultant called me an idiot for rooting my device. Anyhow, I'm all ears for a solution and in hope to get this phone working again. Last resort, I may just bite the bullet and buy an S4...
Cheers!
EDIT: I was last using the Slim Bean 4.2 build
Interesting thing, my sister and brother each have an S3 with Sprint. They came to visit last night and my sister's phone goes into a reboot loop but my brother's phone is fine. They're both running stock 4.3 and unrooted. The problem seems to be with certain S3s not liking certain towers.
I'm having a very similar problem. I have a i9305 which keeps restarting on it's own. Seems completely random, today it has done it twice, yesterday it did it about 5 times. Sometimes I'm using it when it happens and sometimes it's just sitting on my desk. Also if the battery is below about 40% it will often go in to a boot loop when it restarts. It was doing it when stock, rooted it and flashed a couple different roms, still did it, back to stock now and it's continuing to restart randomly.
There's a lot of people having this issue if you do a google search. THere does seem to be a power button issue with a lot of S3's but mine doesn't have any of the other power button symptoms (such as turning on as soon as you insert the battery).
I'm reluctant to return the phone as I can't be arsed dealing with the warranty process and I rooted it
Similar problem on stock rooted 4.3 row with kt kernel. reboots seem to happen at my house and only in lte/cdma mode. At the same time I notice constant reception issues. In cdmal no problems at all.
Nice, I just set mine to CDMA instead of lte/cdma and no more problems, no more 4g but I don't care as long as my phone works

If you get your MSL code you can go into ##DATA# and edit the "HDR/1X Selection" under "Others" and force the phone to be LTE only. It might take a several tries before the selection actually sticks and signal sometimes goes away for me momentarily. There's also the problem that LTE isn't available everywhere yet so when I leave my house I select LTE/CDMA in the regular networks connections menu and let the phone reboot.
