I live in Canada.
I only want an Xperia Play as a wi-fi only device, to play emulators, listen to music, take pictures, just something I can have with me on trips and use as a mini-android tablet. I do not have a cell phone, I don't plan on using it as a cell phone, I don't really like cell phones. I never plan on putting a sim card in this thing ever or making a single phone call on it.
I ordered a Verizon Xperia Play from eBay because it was super cheap compared to everyone else.
My question is this:
Will I have to do anything to this device to use it as I have stated above? Or will I just be able to use it right away.
Thanks very much for the help.
If thats the way you want it, you'll have to disable mobile data, and background data. This will keep it from trying to connect to anything.
The cell radio will stay on for the emergency call feature. But this can also be completely disabled if you turn on Airplane mode. Which disables everything. you can turn this off when you want to connect to Wifi.
Thanks very much, that was very helpful and concise. Cheers!
Actually, you can turn airplane mode on, and then turn WiFi on. You don't need to go out of Airplane to do that....
This is how I use my Xperia Play. I don't have a sim card in it. I leave it in "Airplane mode," and then turn on WiFi when I need it. I leave "Background data" enabled so I can access the Android Market when WiFi is up. Also FPse needs to check in every now and then, or else it goes into limited mode. I think Background data needs to be enabled for this to happen. Airplane mode keeps battery usage low so I can keep playing.

Thanks for all these replies, very useful and will help me enjoy my new toy to the fullest.

Really? Didn't know that, thought airplane mode stopped thing from being enabled.
Yes you can turn on WiFi while in Airplane mode. It keeps the cell radio, GPS, etc off.

Ok then guess I'll recap for the OP:
Turn on Airplane mode
Thats is all. Aparently you can keep background data enabled, it just won't do anything until you turn on Wifi, which works when airplane mode is turned on.
Problem solved.
Thanks, at least I know I don't have to do major modifications. I had visions of a nag screen preventing me from using the device if there was no sim card in it.
Well technically theres no nag screen, but you will have an error in the status bar saying that there no sim card.
Yeah, that's not a big deal.
r800x doesn't require a sim card period lmao so you'll never get that message
Well that's good to know too.
Fine he'll get an error saying no network connection....picky picky.....

Actually I have a CDMA R800x that I use this way and I don't get that error. Then again I am rooted running Turbo Kernel with P.A.C. Man rom.
Maybe that's why?
Before I unlocked my bootloader though, I don't remember ever getting an error message. I do remember everytime I rebooted there was a nag screen that said "your phone is not activated would you like to activate it?" but the choices were activat or skip.

Hi
I have been reading a few forums about the slowness of turning the flight mode on and off. Everyone say's its slow at around 10 - 20 seconds. I timed mine today and it takes 4mins. I have kinda got used to it, turn it off then on again for my dual sim to work then forget about it for at least 5mins before it goes again. I noticed this quote
a. Whenever you need to change SIM card start Wireless Modem application, choose Irda from the drop list and tap Start. Then tap Stop and close Wireless Modem. Now you can turn off flight mode in much faster way.

But couldnt figure it out or get it to help. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
I hated this feature of WP7, the WiFi going to sleep when the device went to sleep. I wanted WiFi to be always on. Since yesterday I've been noticing that my WiFi is not disconnecting when phone screen turns off. I don't have anything on download or anything like that. The WiFi just remains connected. I'm not sure whats causing this but I don't want this to go away.
Running Omnia 7 on Mango.
Hope that this is happens to my Mozart too...
does not happen in in my HTC HD7

I'm pretty sure it's a bug. It's happened on my Focus before too and after I rebooted the phone it stopped. So if you don't ever plan on turning off your phone, then you're getting a cool feature lol

Sorry, it still disconnects on my Mango-ed HTC Mozart.
When your mobile is connected to wifi and you are charging your phone wifi is always on but when you unplug it and have wifi activated your wifi connection brakes at standby
Anyone else with this magic fix? What's causing it?
I dare you to restart your phone..

this also this happened to my Nokia lumia 900, I am baffled why this is, the WiFi is constant for me too. Maybe Microsoft secretly updated our phones?

Have you restarted the phones? Are they always keeping WIFI ON during sleep? Do you have a background app doing that?
Here's a trick: http://mobilitydigest.com/wp-tips-tricks-keep-wifi-running-all-the-time/
Thank Jim for finding it and myself for sharing it!
Well, it's just an active background agent which blocks wifi from entering standby. It happens when you run applications which can run under lock screen. After a reboot this "feature" should be gone.
Well my HD7 was doing this when I first got it but then went away, but nowbits back nd its so annoying any help plz
It remains connected under standby when it's connected to a power source.
Guys, need some help here.
I have WiFi at home, and when I'm home, I'm ALWAYS on WiFi. My mobile data is turned OFF.
Now, each time the phone is locked and when I unlock, the mobile data ALSO AUTOMATICALLY turns ON!
I then have to turn it off, and then it remains OFF. But then again, the same thing happens when the device is unlocked.
I tried talking to HTC over the phone, and they told me to do a restart, which I did, but no luck. I really don't want to do a factory default setting. I want to keep that as my last option.
Any idea what seems to be the issue here? It seems to me that it has something to do with the screen ON and OFF time.
PLEASE HELP!

Go To Settings => More => Usage. Turn OFF the Mobile Network (first) option.
Think this should do.
Cheers
I don't know what You mean by data on, do you have working mobile data and wi-fi simultaneously?
You may want to check this: Settings->Wi-Fi->Advanced-> Keep Wi-Fi active when sleep and set it to active.
@veerm, p3v4x, thanks. I figured out the problem. I had installed this app called, Battery Defender, and that was what was causing this to happen. Uninstalled it, and am happy again
Hey guys,
So I have the WiFi problem with my S3; whenever the phone goes into sleep, it for some reason needs to cycle the WiFi connection when waking.
This is incredibly annoying - whenever the phone goes into sleep, I have a 5 second freeze before I can actually unlock it due to the wifi dropping and such.
So the solution when I was on TouchWiz was simple: enter the service mode, through the phone menu, doing *#0011#, and turning off WiFi Power Save.
Now this is all fine and dandy (even though that stupid setting wouldn't stick on reboot, I could always re-enable it) but now that I've flashed CM9, doing the *#0011# code doesn't work anymore - nothing comes up at *all*.
I'm on the current nightly (7/24). Now I'm no Android expert or anything, but I *think* I need the Service Mode application from Samsung to access the service mode menu.
I have backed it up through TitaniumBackup, but I can't restore it. It seems to hang whenever I restore it, which I would think is expected since I did get a warning that I wouldn't be able to restore system apps on a different ROM.
Can anyone help? Is there a way to do that? Or to at least turn off WiFi Power Save, even if it's temporary?
+1 same problem with cm10. Driving me absolutely insane.

im having the same issue on CM9 ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1633198 ) on HTC Wildfire S marvelc. the regular VM ##847446 isnt working.
any devs care to shed some light?
My phone appears to be screwed and I don't know why or what happened, I'm super bummed. I've tried turning WiFi, mobile data, airplane mode on off, restarting in safe mode, etc. and nothing I've been able to do works to get WiFi or Mobile Connection to work again.
Right now I'm trying to kill the battery since that's what happened before the last time I used it but I don't know how that will help.
Anybody have some ideas on why or how this could happen? Phone is great otherwise.
Could a Factory Reset help?
