Stock TW is so annoying... - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Just bored and venting about how much I hate stock TW 2.3.6 on my S2. The USB hub on my phone has been iffy, at best, recently and until I get a warranty exchange, I'm keeping stock. It won't be for another week or so because I have to go into the local TMO store tomorrow and document the problem for their staff. It took me forever to unroot and ODIN back to stock because of my damaged USB port, I can't risk it again. Ugh.

LOL there's no direct correlation dude. But in order to get a warranty replacement, I need to be on stock firmware. I know some people say that they've sent it in rooted and on a custom ROM but I'm not gonna take the risk if I don't need to.

I bought my device used. Has one nicks and minor scratch on body.
I swear I'm a strict about having the any of my devices stay as new as possible. I wanted to warranty exchange. In the end I stuck with the device. Also hear the replacements are all refurb devices.
In the end I just loaded CM9. Main reason I stayed away from this device was the Stock ROM. I hate it...... Alot.....
Been happy because of CM9. Now the imperfections don't bother me so much, but the true source of my hate for this phone was really the Stock ROM. Now I'm just pleased.

Asurion didn't want to give me a replacement phone since I broke mine in Feb, called it in in May, and went to finish my claim July 22. A simple letter to the CeO with some few choice words will do wonders. I have a NEW non-refurbished phone.

Former rep here, doesnt matter. In store reps are typically stupid, just say its a theme. Reps in the know - know better, they might recommend erring on the side of caution just to be nice...
Protip: the out of warranty replacement fee is usually less than the insurance deductible. No one ever reported back with issues after sending a smashed/wet phone, so I'll assume its still valid.

So even with a cracked screen, warranty isn't nullified?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app

Bought mine with insurance it was 500 bucks, so i figures mine as well get the longest warranty possible. My dad did the same. Lost one, dropped and smashed one, first time free, second time deductible. Still a ton of money saved.

they just charge you the replacement fee and everyone moves on with their business. If you need more than just my word, make up some excuse to get to look at the exchange pages at your local store. I found this stuff out in the small print right above the CUSTOMER AGREES? checkbox (that no one ever reads; on the phone they do, but very very quickly) and shortly after found someone who was desperate enough to try it.
To reiterate; neither i nor my customers have had any problems replacing cracked screens or water damage, but tmo has wised up on some of the old tricks before so it may just be a matter of time.
I had been doing this from march through October of "11.
Also!! Good luck finding a rep who doesn't mind subverting the rules to help out people. Haha
Edit: ill try to reach out and have someone get me a picture of the page in question, it may take a few days though

My phone needs repair?

My touchscreen is horribly acting up...I have bestbuy's $10 monthly insurance. Anyways, when I type, it registers multiple touches and makes my swype type words that I don't want. If this a hardware or software issue? The touchscreen is also not as accurate either.
I was on ec05 and running ext4, midnight rom v5.2, bonsai 4.0.4 kernel (I think). I also flashed blue mattel theme, incase that matters. Its also not just swype, when I hold my finger down on threads, the screen shakes as if I am constantly moving my finger, but im not.
I flashed reRFS stock and it semmed to help, but only to an extent.

Did you try ODIN? If ODIN doesn't fix it then it confirms that it is indeed a hardware issue.

My wifes epic got messed up and she too has the bestbuy $10 insurance.... trust me, they don't care what ROM you have but your in for a treat:
* Rapid exchange only quilifies for the iphone and blackberry.
* They will have to ship your phone out** and wait till they can "repair" it.
** the first time we shipped it, it took 1 month to come back. When we tested the phone in store, nothing we told them to fix was fixed and their response to that is "we have to ship it out again..." its been 15 days now (almost 2 months in total) and even as they said that they would "expedite" no news....

Best Buy insurance will replace it with a new phone no charge. Sprint TEP will replace it with a refurb for $100. If you have no insurance they may be able to replace the screen for $35. Cracked screens are considered user damaged not a warranty type item.

Maybe Best Buy will get there one day...they just started the Rapid Exchange program. But they do at least get you a new phone not refurb and so far average time is a day or two. BUT they do not cover lost or stolen phones like TEP. I think I am going back to TEP on my next phone since I doubt they will let me switch back.

T-Mobile Warranty and how to not void it

I called T-Mobile asking what voids a warranty and the lady told me that I can do anything I want to my phone and it doesn't void the warranty! As long as it isn't physical or liquid damage.
I think that's pretty cool because from what I've read, doing anything like that to your phone voids your warranty.

Warranty covers only things that are defective, like screen dieing or speakers going out things like that...
Damage and water damage cracked screen and things like that are covered ONLY if you pay for insurance .. and its a 130$
Rooting will VOID your warranty but won't affect insurance ..
Also, don't listen to T-Mobile reps... they don't know much and will steer you wrong.

Same here. I flashed a custom ROM. Don't know how I bricked it. Can't get into download mode with the three button methods. The phone just started and then get into boot loop right away. Brought it to T-mobile store and play dump a little bit. The guy at the store order my replacement for $20 processing fee. Got my new phone last week. They received my return this Monday. Have not hear from them so I asummed it is okay. I got lucky because my phone will be out of warranty on October 24th.

When you do a warranty on the Black Galaxy S II right now, they give you the option of another Black S II or an HTC One S. It's been that way for a week or two. The reason they are doing that is because of low replacement inventory for the Black S II. If you choose the S II, your replacement will be on back order instead of the usual next day delivery. The HTC One S can be sent next day. The White S II does not have this option. Not sure why they are not offering the White S II as a replacement for the Black S II, except that they may be trying to conserve inventory on it, as it outsold the One S.

I tend to buy all of my phones brand new, sometimes lightly used and unsubsidized. TMo is great since they charge a decent price if you don't want the phone subsidy. I usually stick with the manufacturers warranty.
All I will say is if you brick your phone, make sure you hard brick it if you are going to a T-Mobile and getting it replaced. I hard bricked mine the first time I tried installing a I-9100 rom on my T989 because I thought "Galaxy S2" meant all of them on the CyanogenMod website (yes, my first time flashing a rom). They replaced it since it was under the 20 day complete return (if its under 20 days they will replace it with a BRAND NEW one instead of a refurbished) and it came overnighted (unfortunately I bricked it friday and talked with them so I had to wait til monday because they were closed on weekends. If not under the 20 days they will give you a 20$ processing fee and a refurbished phone that may look new but it certainly isnt.

Samsung is pathetic

Samsung is so sad.I bricked my s3, accidently put an international rom on it...I know, I feel like an idiot. Anyway, I called their service center, created a ticket and sent it away. They received in 2 days, and then it took about 7 business days since arrival to get any other update, which was today. So I get home today from a horrible work day and notice Samsung is trying to charge $180 over literally a small circling Corning hairline crack. If I had the phone I'd show you guys. Its so small that people dont even notice it at first sight till told. I even notified samsung of this small crack while setting up ticket and they claimed that it was fine. On my online status they didnt even write anything about the actual hardware needed to be replaced, just the lcd. That just leads me even more to belive that samsung will say anything to get out of a warranty repair/replacement. I know their service center had a bad rep but this is pathetic. I just should've sent it to mobile tech for repair. Any of you guys have stories like this? I'd love to hear some.
Sent using xda premium
Yup.
I have basically the same story. Bricked a T999 and sent it to Samsung to see if they might repair it and ended up with a bill for an LCD repair. Told them to send it back and I'm here with another T999 now. I'll just send it to MobileTechVideos to be JTAG repaired.. Samsung was not worth it.

Well if you bricked your phone it means that there no boot animation whatsoever. Samsung probably thought it was the LCD because they didn't see anything coming up on the screen. It must have been a lazy employed to figure it was bricked.
Yeah I'm pretty sure they would want the screen CRYSTAL Clear when sent for repair when phone doesn't even turn on . sometimes the glass can be broken but not seing unless it's opened, lazy worker probably didn't bother trying to open it or anything to see that wasn't the case.

I'm sorry but how is it Samsung's fault that you bricked your phone? If it was a factory defect that broke it, fine. Then I would sympathize with you. But you broke it by flashing the wrong rom. Suck it up and buy a new phone. People pulling stunts like this are the reason why most warranty and return policies are so bad now. I'm sure I will get some heat for this, and it's nothing personal against the OP, but if I knowingly made a mistake and bricked my phone I would not scam the manufacturer or warranty company to take a loss for my mistake.

Yeah I get you but I'm not neccessarily mad at Samsung for not fixing my phone but the fact that they didn't even examine and voided the warranty over a small crack that I was told wouldn't matter. I understand it was my fault but just got the phone recently. 1 they don't know the phone is rooted nor flashed.
2. I think my warranty was voided because of the small crack on my phone that Samsung first said wouldn't have been an issue. I'm not even sure if it was voided for sure.
3. I'm complaining about them being pathetic for voiding a warranty over a hairline crack that couldn't possibly affect the phone's hardware. That they themselves said wouldn't be a problem prior to me sending it in.
4. I wouldn't have even been mad if they simply told me it wouldn't be repaired under warranty at first or atleast when they got the phone. But I was told this 9 days after they got. I could've simply went and got it repaired elsewhere.
I'm not trying to play the victim here. Yes it was my fault I bricked, reponsibilty accepted. When I told Samsung it wouldn't boot, they said they'd fix it. Held my phone for about 2 weeks and is now saying its a no go.
But honestly I'm not even mad about it anymore. I just wanna get my phone fixed and back in my pocket.

Well not in the sense that my phone was bricked and didn't get fixed through Samsung. I'm not mad about that. Samsung said small crack wouldn't be an issue, even put on the report and they said the technician even looked at my phone first day of arrival but yet waited till today to say it. I feel like they should've just told me the first day but hey maybe its a sign, on being more careful and not sending in tech for false warranty repairs. Never done it before, though what the heck. Honestly its whatever now, regardless of anything this while situation was a mistake and you (I) learn from it.

Wow that is horrible. I wish you the best!
I always just send my phones back to the carrier, they are usually a little more friendly since they have a vested interest in making you happy. I have never had to return a phone due to bricking it or anything though, always for screen issues, or hardware button issues. Usually the carrier just fixes it or gives me a refurbished one as a replacement. The best carrier i have ever dealt with when it came to repairs and replacements was Sprint, Verizon was the worse, havent had to do any returns/repairs yet with T Mobile.
J-TAG repair can fix a hard-brick.
They have fast turn-around and they don't care if your phone looks like you ran it over with a car or if you flashed a ROM for HTC EVO on it.
And it's not fraud.
To be honest, the fact that so many people try to de-fraud them makes me feel it's justifiable that they are trying to find any reason not to repair. If people were screwing you over time and time again, wouldn't you ?
They didn't void your warranty over a crack, so stop making things up. If you would have been honest with them in the first place you would never have wasted your time.

Look man I don't know, they told me becuasr of the crack on the bofttom corner of my screen it would no longer be repaired under.warranty. But I told them about this crack before sending it in and they said it would be fine. They didn't even bother putting up any other problem found before receiving payment for the LCD replacement. Anyway I don't care, it doesn't even matter now I honestly just want to get my phone to get it fixed and back in my pocket. They said they just shipped it out today so hopefully I can get it back tomorrow, most likely Monday though.

Insurance Claim on Tmo GS3

I'm currently having some problems with my charger staying plugged to my phone. It's very loose for some reason and constantly unplugs overnight even with the slightest touch.
My screen has been cracked for quite some time now (prior to this issue) but I was wondering if this would restrict me from filing an insurance claim on my phone. Would they hassle me for a broken screen?
Thanks,
basically got 2 options at this point, pay the fee , send your phone back, wait for replacement,
or claim it lost, pay the deductible, keep your phone an let them send another one to you, up to you, not promoting this way,but you do have these two options
for option #1, what exactly is the fee?
I'm considering the option of saying that the phone is just suddenly slightly defective (the charger port) in order to get a new refurb one. I've done this multiple times before and got a replacement for free but never with a broken screen.

Filing a claim and getting a refurb will cost you $130. I wouldn't recommend the 2nd option mentioned above, but I'm not going to tell you what or what not to do.
Good luck!

You can't claim warranty exchange with Tmobile with a broken screen. They will charge you restocking fee $400+. Its better to call insurance which is $150 I believe.

I agree. This has been my experience. Pay the deductible and keep both phones.
Don't say it's lost and keep both phones, that is insurance fraud.
File an insurance claim on the Asurion website for the honest reason. The fee is $130. They will send you a new phone with free next day shipping, THEN you send your phone back with the provided packaging and prepaid label.

Yes that is exactly correct. You can't keep both. If you claim it "lost" they'll blacklist the imei of your old when you get your new. There's no way around it. Don't cheat the system op.

Appreciate all the replies and insight! It wasn't my intention to file it as "lost" and keep the phone. Just wanted to see if I would still get the same warranty benefits for my loose charger despite the screen being cracked from a previous incident.
Thanks!

Sorry I was replying to the poster about keeping both phones but just giving advice to you. I've seen a lot of posts before where people claim they've kept both and found ways around it. .

I like how people talk about insurance fraud when in reality finding a million ways to go back to stock, triangle away because your phone is messed up from hacking. It's really no difference that's insurance fraud too a little hypocritical

But that doesn't cost the company money and cause rates to go up
Returning to stock, the companies are getting the phones back to refurbish and sell again. Lying and saying you lost your $500 phone to get another $500 phone is no where near the same thing.
Not to mention the fact that rooting only voids the manufacturer warranty, not your insurance.

Huh how It doesn't cost the company money, shipping cost that they pay.. Hard bricking devices or soft bricks that some don't even bother to fix and send it in.technically a phone is not a phone when you can't call or do what a phone is for when the IMEI is blocked. Also rooting may bring hardware issues etcc so if the phone is malfunctioning people are going to send it in. that's also insurance fraud because you caused the phone to not work and you want to get a new one or refurbished. I get your point though but I still think rates will go up either way, just like gas does when the economy us bad .

With insurance it doesn't matter if you hacked it and fried the processor. That's what you pay for insurance for. Using it to get a second phone is not what it's for. I see where your point could be valid for a warranty exchange though.

Yeah that's what I meant you be surprise there's a bunch of people that don't pay for insurance. So I was looking at it through that perspective because it relates to rates all around.

Insurance deductible on s3 is $150 not $130. ( went up at end of march )

Asurion Insurance help?

So my mom epic 4g touch is watered damaged and I was told to call ausurion and I would have to pay a 100 deductible would I have to give them the s2? And if I do can I just report the phone stolen and if I do is it the same 100 deductible and I'm asking because my little brother can use it as a music player til it breaks completely. Idk if this is OK to ask here so mods sorry ahead of time. Any help with this would be appreciated.

My understanding is you pay your deductible after submitting an "affidavit" about what happened, and they ship you a replacement phone the next day, so it's not a one for one swap, so your little brother can use it as an expensive mp3 player. . Just curious, did you try putting the phone in a bag of rice for a few days before giving it up for good? Might save you 100 bucks. Just sayin' Good luck!

I've tried everything and the phone works it's just it's so slow my gfs epic 4g runs faster lol but thank you a lot for the info

How do you mean it runs slow? Could it be there is a bunch of stuff taking up ram? If you have any experience flashing roms you might want to check out some of the awesome work in the dev section. Some really top notch stuff over there right now.

That is also insurance fraud to report it as stolen when it is still in your possession, while the chances of getting caught are next to none but just something to think about it least

And I may just file the report for repair seems like asurian doesn't want the damaged phone since it was water damaged and honestly it wouldn't sit with my conscious to do that

What? Asurion takes any phone back no matter what's the damage when they give you a new one. They even give you an envelope when reported lost or stolen just in case the phone ever gets back in your possession so you can return..

No problem. It's even noted on the site when filing a claim. I go through phones like crazy and I read everything. It goes something along the lines like any found devices claimed through Asurion are the property of Asurion and must be returned yada yada.. Something like that, it's been a while I lost or had a phone stolen lol
Ps: I had two claims this year. I would gladly screencap the email they sent me thanking me for returning my liquor damaged EVO LTE that was completely fried. So if they would take a liquor damaged one with a fried motherboard why not a water damaged one which still powers on?

A big part of me thinks Asurion is complete rip off. I used them once and paid the $100 deductible which pi$$ed me off because I had been paying them $9 a month over the past 4 years- enough to cover the cost of a new premium smartphone and the $100 deductible. And once I got my replacement phone (refurbished, not new) the first month or so were covered by the Sprint warranty yet, I still got charged me $9 for the "Asurion".
They want you to believe the replacement phone they are sending you cost them the same retail price you'd have bought it for from Samsung but that's bull****. I am sure they get them for buy them from sprint for whatever sprint pays for recycled phones., probably $50 then they mark it up 100% and viola $100 deductible. And if you tell Asurion you want a new phone instead of a refurbished phone they'll lie to you and tell you Samsung doesn't make the D710 anymore. But one visit to the Samsung website suggests otherwise.
In short I wouldn't think twice about getting over on Asurion.
And no it's NOT Insurance fraud. Insurance fraud is a crime when committed against a real insurance company which is regulated by the state.
Ask these people if they think you should stick it to Asurion.
Take the phone apart and hit the board lightly with rubbing alcohol and a soft tooth brush.
Before you do tho take a few pics of the board and post them and ill let ya know the extent of the damage
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I just went ahead and reported the phone water damaged and I'm just going to pay the 100 deductible I did get a call from assurion saying they do limited these forums and advises against fraud and they do monitor these forums.
