T-Mobile Warranty and how to not void it - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

I called T-Mobile asking what voids a warranty and the lady told me that I can do anything I want to my phone and it doesn't void the warranty! As long as it isn't physical or liquid damage.
I think that's pretty cool because from what I've read, doing anything like that to your phone voids your warranty.

Well, she may had not been aware, but rooting your phone and installing custom roms also voids your warranty
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

yeah, probably.
too good to be true hehe

Custom ROMs.. rooting voids warranty... physical damage, lost, stolen, water damage is all covered
Under warranty.. I believe $130.. since assurion handles those this now.

Warranty covers only things that are defective, like screen dieing or speakers going out things like that...
Damage and water damage cracked screen and things like that are covered ONLY if you pay for insurance .. and its a 130$
Rooting will VOID your warranty but won't affect insurance ..
Also, don't listen to T-Mobile reps... they don't know much and will steer you wrong.

I thought there was something on XDA TV about how these big companies wanna act like rooting voids your warranty but if call them and know what your talking about then they would have to complete a warranty repair. It's a episode from a few months back. Look it up. Good stuff.

This is true. I bricked my phone because of a custom ROM that was not built correctly. I luckily had warranty still on it and they sent me a brand new one FREE OF CHARGE!!

if you get the 8 dollar plan, physical damage and water damage is eh. I think it's an amazing deal, does anyone not agree?

If you have that plan and do mess something up, you could always run it over with your car (or something a little more civil)

Same here. I flashed a custom ROM. Don't know how I bricked it. Can't get into download mode with the three button methods. The phone just started and then get into boot loop right away. Brought it to T-mobile store and play dump a little bit. The guy at the store order my replacement for $20 processing fee. Got my new phone last week. They received my return this Monday. Have not hear from them so I asummed it is okay. I got lucky because my phone will be out of warranty on October 24th.

When you do a warranty on the Black Galaxy S II right now, they give you the option of another Black S II or an HTC One S. It's been that way for a week or two. The reason they are doing that is because of low replacement inventory for the Black S II. If you choose the S II, your replacement will be on back order instead of the usual next day delivery. The HTC One S can be sent next day. The White S II does not have this option. Not sure why they are not offering the White S II as a replacement for the Black S II, except that they may be trying to conserve inventory on it, as it outsold the One S.

I tend to buy all of my phones brand new, sometimes lightly used and unsubsidized. TMo is great since they charge a decent price if you don't want the phone subsidy. I usually stick with the manufacturers warranty.

All I will say is if you brick your phone, make sure you hard brick it if you are going to a T-Mobile and getting it replaced. I hard bricked mine the first time I tried installing a I-9100 rom on my T989 because I thought "Galaxy S2" meant all of them on the CyanogenMod website (yes, my first time flashing a rom). They replaced it since it was under the 20 day complete return (if its under 20 days they will replace it with a BRAND NEW one instead of a refurbished) and it came overnighted (unfortunately I bricked it friday and talked with them so I had to wait til monday because they were closed on weekends. If not under the 20 days they will give you a 20$ processing fee and a refurbished phone that may look new but it certainly isnt.

Currently owner of an htc amaze

I'm currently an owner of an htc amaze 4g. Ive seen people exchange from the htc amaze to the Samsung galaxy s2. I just want to know how I could do that? I'm really getting tired of the problem that this phone has. I really want a Samsung galaxy s2. What's the easiest way to do that? Should I just buy a new one? :/.
Thank you for reading this.

lol everyone says that. well the i cant put a case on because it makes the wifi signal weaker, the flash messes up the pictures at night, the faceplate creaks when you put pressure on it(its very loud) and haptic keys on the bottom of the screen bleed through the screen of the phone so you can see it lighter on the bottom of the phone. that's a problem with all of the htc amaze. im just tired of all of those problems. i love htc sense though :/. is there any way to put htc sense on the samsung galaxy s2?

Officially? No. However I bought a sensation on Craigslist and it stopped charging after a month. I think I broke the charging port. I went to t mobile chat and told them. At one point I was asked where I got the phone. I lied and told them from t mobile and they replaced it with the amaze. My old sgs4g I Gabe to my wife who is on her own plan and she started having software issues so she called t mobile up and had that replaced.

If.you.go.through three.or.mote warranty exchanges in 90days or less, you are offered an alternate exchange. A new phone but there is no.guarantee it'll be the sgs2.

That is not ture anymore. I went through 4 HTC Sensations and the current one is having issues, and they will not replace it with a different model. I've tried multiple agents and pleaded at several stores.
Well was it within 90 days or less. Its in their policy. They are probably untrained or overlooking it. I have done this on two occassions. You can always have them transfer you to retention. Or if you complain hard enough you can initiate them to look at their policy. My wife has the mytouch 4g and had some freezing issues last month. She went through two exchagnes in a matter of weeks. The Rep told her at both the store while I was there and one on chat that if she specifically had three or more exchanges for the same device within 90 days an alternate phone would be offered. It is similar to or better. The reps can't choose as it chides the most comparable phone to your current one as well as same price or more. Sometimes they offered another option. It would be worth mentioning the policy next time or speaking to a manager and or retention.

For clarification tmobile use to do that they dont always anymore speaking with retention will do nothing in terms of that we cant force it to happen neither can a manager either your given the option or not. I believe they made changes to prevent people fraudelantly doing this just because they know the policy. Best thing you can do is sell your phone and just buy a galaxy s 2 used, just find a reputable seller.

That's lame. So they'd rather have an unhappy customer that's gone through many refurbished versus, than just shipping out a newer. Phone? I can see how warranty stuff can be abused.

People sell their phones on Craigslist and then report it lost/stolen and file an insurance claim with T-Mobile/Assurion. They get shipped a replacement phone and your phone gets blacklisted which means it wont work on T-mobile.

Stock TW is so annoying...

Just bored and venting about how much I hate stock TW 2.3.6 on my S2. The USB hub on my phone has been iffy, at best, recently and until I get a warranty exchange, I'm keeping stock. It won't be for another week or so because I have to go into the local TMO store tomorrow and document the problem for their staff. It took me forever to unroot and ODIN back to stock because of my damaged USB port, I can't risk it again. Ugh.

LOL there's no direct correlation dude. But in order to get a warranty replacement, I need to be on stock firmware. I know some people say that they've sent it in rooted and on a custom ROM but I'm not gonna take the risk if I don't need to.
I bought my device used. Has one nicks and minor scratch on body.
I swear I'm a strict about having the any of my devices stay as new as possible. I wanted to warranty exchange. In the end I stuck with the device. Also hear the replacements are all refurb devices.
In the end I just loaded CM9. Main reason I stayed away from this device was the Stock ROM. I hate it...... Alot.....
Been happy because of CM9. Now the imperfections don't bother me so much, but the true source of my hate for this phone was really the Stock ROM. Now I'm just pleased.
Asurion didn't want to give me a replacement phone since I broke mine in Feb, called it in in May, and went to finish my claim July 22. A simple letter to the CeO with some few choice words will do wonders. I have a NEW non-refurbished phone.

Former rep here, doesnt matter. In store reps are typically stupid, just say its a theme. Reps in the know - know better, they might recommend erring on the side of caution just to be nice...
Protip: the out of warranty replacement fee is usually less than the insurance deductible. No one ever reported back with issues after sending a smashed/wet phone, so I'll assume its still valid.

they just charge you the replacement fee and everyone moves on with their business. If you need more than just my word, make up some excuse to get to look at the exchange pages at your local store. I found this stuff out in the small print right above the CUSTOMER AGREES? checkbox (that no one ever reads; on the phone they do, but very very quickly) and shortly after found someone who was desperate enough to try it.
To reiterate; neither i nor my customers have had any problems replacing cracked screens or water damage, but tmo has wised up on some of the old tricks before so it may just be a matter of time.
I had been doing this from march through October of "11.
Also!! Good luck finding a rep who doesn't mind subverting the rules to help out people. Haha
Edit: ill try to reach out and have someone get me a picture of the page in question, it may take a few days though

Samsung is pathetic

Samsung is so sad.I bricked my s3, accidently put an international rom on it...I know, I feel like an idiot. Anyway, I called their service center, created a ticket and sent it away. They received in 2 days, and then it took about 7 business days since arrival to get any other update, which was today. So I get home today from a horrible work day and notice Samsung is trying to charge $180 over literally a small circling Corning hairline crack. If I had the phone I'd show you guys. Its so small that people dont even notice it at first sight till told. I even notified samsung of this small crack while setting up ticket and they claimed that it was fine. On my online status they didnt even write anything about the actual hardware needed to be replaced, just the lcd. That just leads me even more to belive that samsung will say anything to get out of a warranty repair/replacement. I know their service center had a bad rep but this is pathetic. I just should've sent it to mobile tech for repair. Any of you guys have stories like this? I'd love to hear some.

Yup.
I have basically the same story. Bricked a T999 and sent it to Samsung to see if they might repair it and ended up with a bill for an LCD repair. Told them to send it back and I'm here with another T999 now. I'll just send it to MobileTechVideos to be JTAG repaired.. Samsung was not worth it.

Well if you bricked your phone it means that there no boot animation whatsoever. Samsung probably thought it was the LCD because they didn't see anything coming up on the screen. It must have been a lazy employed to figure it was bricked.
Yeah I'm pretty sure they would want the screen CRYSTAL Clear when sent for repair when phone doesn't even turn on . sometimes the glass can be broken but not seing unless it's opened, lazy worker probably didn't bother trying to open it or anything to see that wasn't the case.

I'm sorry but how is it Samsung's fault that you bricked your phone? If it was a factory defect that broke it, fine. Then I would sympathize with you. But you broke it by flashing the wrong rom. Suck it up and buy a new phone. People pulling stunts like this are the reason why most warranty and return policies are so bad now. I'm sure I will get some heat for this, and it's nothing personal against the OP, but if I knowingly made a mistake and bricked my phone I would not scam the manufacturer or warranty company to take a loss for my mistake.

Yeah I get you but I'm not neccessarily mad at Samsung for not fixing my phone but the fact that they didn't even examine and voided the warranty over a small crack that I was told wouldn't matter. I understand it was my fault but just got the phone recently. 1 they don't know the phone is rooted nor flashed.
2. I think my warranty was voided because of the small crack on my phone that Samsung first said wouldn't have been an issue. I'm not even sure if it was voided for sure.
3. I'm complaining about them being pathetic for voiding a warranty over a hairline crack that couldn't possibly affect the phone's hardware. That they themselves said wouldn't be a problem prior to me sending it in.
4. I wouldn't have even been mad if they simply told me it wouldn't be repaired under warranty at first or atleast when they got the phone. But I was told this 9 days after they got. I could've simply went and got it repaired elsewhere.
I'm not trying to play the victim here. Yes it was my fault I bricked, reponsibilty accepted. When I told Samsung it wouldn't boot, they said they'd fix it. Held my phone for about 2 weeks and is now saying its a no go.
But honestly I'm not even mad about it anymore. I just wanna get my phone fixed and back in my pocket.

Whether they know its rooted or not, you knowingly voided your own warranty when you rooted and installed a custom recovery/rom. And then you tried to scam them by sending it in as defective. You have absolutely nothing to complain about.

Well not in the sense that my phone was bricked and didn't get fixed through Samsung. I'm not mad about that. Samsung said small crack wouldn't be an issue, even put on the report and they said the technician even looked at my phone first day of arrival but yet waited till today to say it. I feel like they should've just told me the first day but hey maybe its a sign, on being more careful and not sending in tech for false warranty repairs. Never done it before, though what the heck. Honestly its whatever now, regardless of anything this while situation was a mistake and you (I) learn from it.

Wow that is horrible. I wish you the best!
I always just send my phones back to the carrier, they are usually a little more friendly since they have a vested interest in making you happy. I have never had to return a phone due to bricking it or anything though, always for screen issues, or hardware button issues. Usually the carrier just fixes it or gives me a refurbished one as a replacement. The best carrier i have ever dealt with when it came to repairs and replacements was Sprint, Verizon was the worse, havent had to do any returns/repairs yet with T Mobile.
J-TAG repair can fix a hard-brick.
They have fast turn-around and they don't care if your phone looks like you ran it over with a car or if you flashed a ROM for HTC EVO on it.
And it's not fraud.
To be honest, the fact that so many people try to de-fraud them makes me feel it's justifiable that they are trying to find any reason not to repair. If people were screwing you over time and time again, wouldn't you ?
They didn't void your warranty over a crack, so stop making things up. If you would have been honest with them in the first place you would never have wasted your time.

Look man I don't know, they told me becuasr of the crack on the bofttom corner of my screen it would no longer be repaired under.warranty. But I told them about this crack before sending it in and they said it would be fine. They didn't even bother putting up any other problem found before receiving payment for the LCD replacement. Anyway I don't care, it doesn't even matter now I honestly just want to get my phone to get it fixed and back in my pocket. They said they just shipped it out today so hopefully I can get it back tomorrow, most likely Monday though.

Cracked my screen and have to return to T-mobile.....

So I went to work today and forgot my phone was in my jacket pocket when I went to roll it up to stash on my bike(HD) and when I went to retrieve it I pulled it out with a cracked screen. The entire bottom 2/3 of the screen/touch screen does not work at all. I am able to boot into recovery/download mode to restore it back to stock via odin before I return it BUT will that also reset my flash counter as well so that my deeds go undetected?

Because it won't be a warranty claim, you have to file an insurance claim. I would dunk it in the sink full of water before sending it back until it is completely ruined and they can't boot it either....

It doesn't matter if its rooted for an insurance claim. Only when your doing a warranty exchange.

You could have just claimed it stolen, and you wouldn't be required to send anything back. It's the same deductible, so what's the difference?
You could have kept the other one for parts(camera, headphone jack, etc)

If you are going thru insurance don't worry about it.
That would be considered damage to the phone anyway.
Root is just not covered under regular warranty.
Not once have I seen a insurance claim issue for being rooted.

Awesome then I won't even worry about messing with it, ill just wipe it and send it as is.
On the other side of things I purchased an insurance policy through squaretrade for my phone. It is half the cost of T-mobiles insurance(11.99/month vs. 5.95/month) and offers the same if not better protection than T-mobile and the deductible is only $99 vs. the $175 I paid T-mobile/Asurion. The only downside from what I see is they try and repair your phone rather than replace it, which it says is guaranteed in 5 days or it's free! Hopefully I never need to use it or find out, but if I do I guess I can live without my phone for that long. Lol

I personally prefer repairs over replacement devices. Replacements aren't new, they are factory refurbished.
And to answer your question in the OP, flashing back to stock via Odin will not wipe your counter. Triangle away is needed for that

Funny you say that because the S4 they sent me was new in the box, I was expecting a refurbished phone as well. Guess the phone just hasn't been out long enough to refurbish them lol. And that's what I thought, no way to do that with the touch screen out lol. Guess they get it back rooted, I won't lose any sleep over it. Haha

Samsung warranty headache

This is just as a warning to anyone looking to try out Samsung. They do not stand by their warranty or product. My s3 stopped charging or transferring files. I sent it in. It was about six months after purchase. They sent the phone back unrepaired claiming the phone was beyond economical repair. I called in saying they should either send me a refurbished phone or repair mine as stated in the warranty. They said that a piece of my motherboard was damaged and it couldn't be repaired. So I requested a refurbed phone as my s3 should be covered by warranty. At first they tried claiming my warranty isn't covered because of water damage but I proved neither water damage indicator went off. Then they tried to say my phone was out of warranty. Even though I had a proof of purchase of October 2012. Finally they resorted to simply saying I must have opened the phone and broke it myself. Samsung did everything they could to skirt around their warranty obligations. And in the end left me with a six month old broken product that I paid $500+ dollars for and is now practically useless.

Did you take it into Sprint or is this even Sprint GS3 related?
I've had them have to replace the entire board, certainly that's more expensive than an charging port
I've sent multiple phones to them for varying problems, and its always been honored.

I concur with this . Mine started cracking at the bezel for no reason! My phone was babied in a case and never dropped. They wanted me to pay a 70 dollar fee. In was seriously pissed. I only had the phone for 3 months.

They wanted me to take it into sprint to see about getting a replacement. The thing is the phone was just bought outright for the unsubsidized price and flashed so I never even had an account with sprint so sprint wasn't able to do anything, nor should they have, as it was a Samsung warranty not sprint
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
That may be the case, but if your phone doesn't work, how is Sprint going to charge you $70/month? They have an Interest in you having a working phone.

Sprint doesn't care about my phone. I don't have sprint service. Its just a sprint s3. I attempted talking to them but they said it was Samsung's problem because I didn't have sprint service.

And that's what sprint should do. Samsung ia complaint is probably based on the fact you did something you not suppose to do with a phone now. Even though it shouldn't have anything to do with your problem.
The thing is if they mess with your phone and then you get it back and have a software issue immediately. Normally you could say samsung messed it up, probably true too. But since you have messed with your software, samsung doesn't want to be liable if something like that happens.
Basically YOU voided the warranty when you flashed a sprint phone to another carrier.
