Upgrade Motorola Milestone to 2.2 or 2.3 - Upgrading, Modifying and Unlocking

Hi!
I have a Motorola Milestone with Android 2.1 and wanted to upgrade to 2.2 or 2.3.
I installed it a 2GB micro sd card.
So, after googling a lot and watched lots of videos about how to do this upgrade, I was able to root my phone and install Rom Manager. After Rom Manager was installed, I ran the "ClockworkMod Recovery", selected my phone model and it showed that the process was succesful.
After that, the first step I wanted to do prior to upgrading was to backup the current rom using the Rom Manager, but after I hit "Backup current rom", it restarts the phone, shows the exclamation icon along with the phone icon and it sits forever and nothing happens. It shows nothing but the exclamation and phone icon, no messages of what is happening, nothing at all.
I had manually to press the power button in order to reboot it.
(I read in a post that redoing the clockworkmod recovery again would do the trick, but the problem persists).
What could be happening with the rom backup process?
If that issue is solved, I would appreciate if you recommend me which android version would be the best for my specific model: 2.2 or 2.3 and which should be the apropriate guide I would follow in order to upgrade my phone's android.
Thanks in advance!
Pish

I do not understand you because there is an official 2.2 update download by Motorola Software Update tool
so why to root etc and about Rom Manager was a bad idea to use it too bad because that's nice device
now use this thread to return to stock rom if this is not working return it to the shop/service
also a collection of roms for Milestone here

Thanks for your reply ruscan.
The phone is still working without problems with Android 2.1. I just wanted to update it to 2.2 or 2.3 to be able to install applications on my SD card since this is not possible with 2.1.
I'll research about updating it with Motorola Software Update tool, but if you recommend me to stay in 2.1 I'll do it
Thanks a lot.

Android 2.2 is first version to include support to move apps to sdcard so update it to official 2.2 also try a custom rom based on Cyanogenmod/ MIUI if you want but if you don't have enough experience with flashing is better to stay on stock rom at this time (I suppose you never flashed a new rom on your phone)
If you want to stay on 2.1 then install an app like app2sd or other from Market
well, to answer your question your first flash/update should be Froyo- it's good enough also this is official update so no risk there ...then experiment others but read a lot about and choose a rom with detailed instructions also use a laptop on battery to upgrade if something is wrong when flashing you are entering a lot of troubles

I recommend that you upgrade to 7.2.0 CyanogenMod ... in this issue "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941346" and here's a guide on how to do it from your stock rom .. "http://www.mrmuh.com/2012/01/update-a-motorola-milestone-from-motorola-firmware-to-cyanogenmod-7/" ..

Thanks for your replies!
Well, I executed the Motorola Software Update and my Milestone was updated to 2.2.1 and now I'm able to move apps to the SD card.
It is running without any problems, that's great
I'll wait for some days to see how my phone goes with this Android version and decide if I stay there or look forward to upgrade to Cyanogen mod.
Just a last quick question (not related to this original post), this 2.2.1 still has the original apps tab at the bottom of the screen. How can I replace it with the new launcher that Froyo is suppossed to have?
Thanks again for your help!

Firmware update

This is probably a bit early, but I was wondering what happens to my phone when I upgrade to Froyo.
As a new user to smartphones and Android do I have to reinstall my applications after upgrade? If I do, does the 'market' have a function to redownload all the applications in one go, or do I need to make a list.
I don't have root, so is there an application that can backup almost everything including the apps and their preferences?
Any help would be appreciated.
Ta.
There isn't an upgrade to FroYo yet, only hacked ROMs that need root access to flash
Thanks, but I know that Froyo is not yet available. I just wondered what would happen when I did upgrade.
Cheers.

First hero update cleared my entire phone, had to install everything.
But Android 2.1 does save some stuff to your sd card, so I don't think you have to do everything again.
But I do think you have to install all your apps again but they are listed in the market in the my downloads section.
At least they were when I upgraded my hero... (wich runs 1.5 so guess 2.2 will do that to)

OTA does not work

I have a Dutch HTC Desire, English language.
When I check for an update I get the message there is one available.
I see the download was completed and it restarts my Desire.
I see a screen with a phone and arrow, followed by a phone with a question mark.
Then the phone restarts and I have the 'old' version.
Is it that I have a rooted version?
What do I have to do to get FroYo? I downloaded PB99IMG_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4.06.00.02_2_release_12984_signed.zip.
When 'Flash zip from sdcard' it also gave an error:
(bad)
Installation aborted.
Anyone a suggestion?
im having the same probem. downloads the update, restarts but still on the previous version. when i goto software check it shows there is still an update available

Yeah, root is probably the problem.
It's not FroYo though, it's just a bunch of minor changes and bugfixes. Also, it's not that new, it's been out unoffically for a couple of weeks. A lot of the custom roms on here and on modaco are based on the same 1.21 rom and will allow you to keep root and apps2sd. So you could flash to one of those, maybe?
I don't think this is the Froyo update. Apparently it's just an HTC update of some kind that doesn't make much of a change. Just keep trying, but in the mean time don't stress too much, you're not missing out on anything.
o really? so i cant install the OTA updates if i have root? that really sux and if i had known that when i flashed i wouldnt have done it.
i might reflash to this version as i want it for the facebook contacts bug fix. i dont have apps2sd as as far as im aware thats regulary bricking phones, that still the case?
Couldn't say. The Desire root was so half-assed and seemed to cause so many issues that I just didn't bother doing it, so I'm just going by what I've read
ok, well is it possible to do an update without having to flash and therefore resetup and backup all my settings etc? i.e. in the same way the OTA update would do it without resetting the device

The usb brick issue now has a fix available, and it wasn't due to a2sd!
really, thats excellent, u have a link?
Yep.

The recovery method was causing the problems. It still does, but they can now be fixed. people are working on the recovery and booting from SD card etc.
Edit: If you fancy trying out froyo on the desire you can flash a test rom from the dev forums. It's not for everyone yet as it's not totally working, but I'm using a froyo rom and find it's pretty decent for a hacked version!

A rather strange point of view!
Most rooted users wouldn't want to install an OTA because they would then lose root. On other phones (e.g. G1, Magic etc) most rooted ROMs have the OTA mechanism disabled.
The normal course of action for rooted users is to wait for someone to repack the update as a rooted update.zip.

If I'm not mistaken, there isn't really an "original" download link. You'd have to go to your phone's manufacturer for a stock ROM customized to their specs or you could always grab a copy of Froyo's source code and compile your own beast.
Someone correct me if I am wrong please....
I always keep getting Android acore process close and I tried factory reset it dident work so i wanna reflash froyo

Oh I get it. Well, I'm no expert by any means but if you're fully rooted, have a recovery flashed and are flashing different ROMs onto your phone you'd want to be sure you're wiping data/cache/dalvik to minimize any potential issues. I've seen a few people with Acore issues using ADW Launcher. Is that what your exact problem is? Reason why I ask is because there are LOTS of different threads with people helping others troubleshoot Acore issues in ADW.... use the search button for more information.
If you're interested in flashing an unrooted Froyo ROM keep in mind you're going to lose root if you go that route and that there is no way to root the OTA HTC update at the moment (which means once you flash to unrooted Froyo you're stuck there until a dev root's it). The easiest way to go back to original, unrooted Froyo for the HTC EVO 4G is to go to Settings > System Update > HTC update.
I hope this helps you.
I already downlaod froyo via ota and i dont have adw i have nothing just the new froyo and it keeps force closing i have no root nothing and i dident have root before either

Well if that's the case then maybe there is something going on with your phone physically. If you're running a stock phone and it's putting out that many FC's I'd be hard-pressed to take it back and ask for an exchange. That's just me though.

[Q] Dinc Advice Needed

In the spirit of being broke, I have taken my old HTC Droid Incredible and activated it on Straight Talk. It is on Android 2.1, with the build number 1.22.605.0. I want to update it to at least Android 2.2, preferably 2.3. However, I am not able to find the FROYO OTA UPDATE.ZIP. Does anyone still have a copy of that update they would send me? I haven't even started looking for the 2.3 UPDATE.ZIP. My second option is to try to root it and load CM. My reservation with this is that all the rooting instructions I've found either mention the Android version being 2.2 or don't mention the Android version. Some mention downgrading, but, I don't know to which Android version / build the downgrade takes the phone. I am open to all suggestions. And if you can't tell, I've never rooted a phone. And apparently unrevoked can no longer be downloaded.

You can find stock images here: http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/
To flash these, you need an sdcard. The file needs to be named PB31IMG.zip, and is flashed by the phone's bootloader. You can find lots of other useful files for the good old dinc on dinc-does-it.net. (it's XDA user cmlusco's site)
Thank you! I have a dumb question though... Does the phone need to be rooted in order to flash a stock GB Rom?

No. (You will need a micro sd card to flash though if you are not rooted.) Stock factory images are signed, you can flash them from the bootloader (aka HBOOT). There's a nice concise guide here:

Thank you. I can't express how much I appreciate the simple straight forward answer. I got a factory GB rom loaded and it's working well. I hope it will get me through another year.

[Q] Arc S android update suggestions (for backup and space issues?) - noob :$

Hi,
I'm having problems with space and the general speed of my Xperia Arc S so the time has come to finally upgrade from Sony's version of Android 2.3 in hope that it will improve things.
I've kind of avoided this so far as I don't really know the best way to back-up things.
I want to back up to my computer - not to the internet.
I am guessing that for the applications that I would like to back up I would need to back up both their APK files and whatever their setting files are. I guess there are also some system settings to back up (but then these are less important).
A problem I have always had is space on the phone - it has very little storage space and although I try and move everything to the SD card, a lot of it doesn't seem to be able to be moved.
Things like simply the Google Play services take up loads of space! I don't even really have that much on there - mainly just whatsapp.
The phone is stock although I have checked in the service menu and it says that I can unlock the bootloader. Part of the reason I didn't upgrade to Sony's version of Android 4 was because I heard that it locks the bootloader and I didn't know if this was bad.
What is the bootloader unlock for? Is it for loading custom roms? As i thought you could do this even if it was locked? Or is it for rooting?
So yer, I guess I am looking for recommendations for a CFW to suit my needs. Priorities are that it works and i'm guessing the latest android version possible would be best as this will help with performance etc. Or is that a misnomer as newer android releases are generally geared for phones with higher specs? I've heard that some CFWs have problems with wifi etc so i'd like to avoid those as I certainly need that.
Overall there seem to be so many even on this forum that I don't really know which would be a best fit for my needs or this phone.
I also have an original San Francisco (zte blade) to update but will save that 'till I've done this one.
Hopefully I can get an understanding as to how all this CFW / Rooting / whatever business works and the best / latest way to do things, as as with everything, it all rapidly changes and you can find yourself looking out lots of outdated and now incorrect or superseeded information.
All a bit overwhelming really, which is why i've put it off so long!
Thanks for your time and help!
1. Q : For backup on ICS 4.0.4, right?
A : Unlock bootloader first -> root -> flash cwm - now u can backup everything from ur phone.
2. Q : Little storage, right?
A : After backup, reboot system.
Partition ur sdcard -> install link2sd. (google it for how to)

I have android 2.3 - is this a problem?
I thought that the Sony ICS 4.0 update made it so you could not unlock your bootloader?
Hmm if you unlock your bootloader, it will also root the phone, correct?
But it seems that using the Sony tool will wipe my phone developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
So i saw there is the S1tool but then people said that it does not work with the Arc S.
Is this still the case? What is the reason? is it impossible?
So, you say that in order to back up my applications and things, i need to unlock my bootloader. The official way seems to wipe my phone though - so then i can't back up :S
Hmm, see, i am confused about the order i should do things. Also i've heard that if you use the Sony tool then you cannot use OTA updates which seems like it could be problematic? Mind you i guess CFW cannot use OTA either - so how do you update? You must check for updates on your PC and reflash your phone regularly? Or are there ways for Stock android CFW to support OTA updates?
So, does the Sony ICS update stop you unlocking the bootloader?
I guess there are 2 options. Update using that and then install helium OR root and then use titanium backup.
Not sure which to try.
Thanks!
1. Unlock bootloader is only affected by the phone manufacture date, check the battery compartment and see if the date is before 12W11. Any date after this means the phone can't be unlocked.
2. Software does not affect the unlocking of bootloader, like I mentioned earlier check the battery compartment.
3. Unlocking your bootloader does not mean you have rooted your phone. It just means you can flash custom kernels onto your phone.
4. It's not that S1tool doesn't work, if I told you the entire process of doing it you wouldn't want to do it either.
5. Sony last stopped the update at 4.0.4, no need to concern yourself with future updates.
6. If you use CFW, refer to the thread for instructions on how to install updates.
7. Like I mentioned, ICS update does not affect bootloader unlock, only the manufacture date does. Furthermore, if you update from stock to a CFW, you will not be able to restore your data from the old software. You will have no choice but to start with a clean slate.
I am on Sonys 2.3, build 4.0.2.A.0.62 and i read that i cannot root this version.
I can't use backup software as i can't root to use titanium and helium doesn't support 2.3.
Sony back also apparently doesn't support my phone.
Basically, my apps are outdated due to me not having enough space to update them.
I think that updating to Sony's ICS update might enable me to use these programs and root so that i can backup, then unlock the bootloader and use cfw. (i checked and my s# is older than 12W11 so that's fine).
However, i am worried that if i try to update to Sony's ICS update that i will either lose my applications or the data that is stored with them (whatsapp history, game saves, app config etc etc) - particularly as they are not up to date.
Is this the case? Is there anything i can do?
Thanks

Take a look at the tool namend one click root (this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2219781), your build should be root-able, just read carefully and decide if you wanna try...
I used this tool on stock sony ics 4.0.4 build and it worked nicely, haven't tried it on stock sony gb 2.3 build though.
Good luck! :good:

Thanks for the tip! It worked!
If you do it twice it relocks your phone. Took some google translate to find out what the chinese was saying hehe.
I'm now on stock 4.0.3 (4.1.A.0.562).
Doesn't seem a great deal better than 2.3, i guess i need to find out what a good lightweight CFW is really. Firefox for android constantly crashes so i tried naked browser and that does too. Wish there was a good selective script blocker for mobile browsers - that would help a lot. Noscript for firefox would be a possibility but the problem is it crashes a lot even with javascript disabled.
So yer not sure where the problems are coming from, maybe due to the low RAM in this phone. That's why i was thinking a lightweight CFW might help matters but not sure if it's best to go with a 5.1 one that breaks 720p recording and has issues with things like turning off GPS.
Or it might be better to go with the latest type that doesn't break anything. I'm guessing that is a 4.0.4 CFW? Or maybe 4.4? I know stock only goes up to 4.0.4 but i think i read something about being able to get CFW based on stock so HDMI, FM radio, 720p recording etc etc won't be broken?
Thanks anyway!

Well, I haven't tried 5.1 so far, only following the 5.1-threads to see how it's going on.
HDMI is only working up to 4.0.4 roms, FM radio is working in 4.1 roms too, and you'll get 720p recording also in 4.4.4 roms. If you want all things working your phone is able to you will have to use roms based on stock GB or ICS. Therefore I'm using a stock based ICS rom most of the time (T-Rom).
By T-Rom for Arc S, i assume that you mean this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746508
