Hi!
I have a Motorola Milestone with Android 2.1 and wanted to upgrade to 2.2 or 2.3.
I installed it a 2GB micro sd card.
So, after googling a lot and watched lots of videos about how to do this upgrade, I was able to root my phone and install Rom Manager. After Rom Manager was installed, I ran the "ClockworkMod Recovery", selected my phone model and it showed that the process was succesful.
After that, the first step I wanted to do prior to upgrading was to backup the current rom using the Rom Manager, but after I hit "Backup current rom", it restarts the phone, shows the exclamation icon along with the phone icon and it sits forever and nothing happens. It shows nothing but the exclamation and phone icon, no messages of what is happening, nothing at all.
I had manually to press the power button in order to reboot it.
(I read in a post that redoing the clockworkmod recovery again would do the trick, but the problem persists).
What could be happening with the rom backup process?
If that issue is solved, I would appreciate if you recommend me which android version would be the best for my specific model: 2.2 or 2.3 and which should be the apropriate guide I would follow in order to upgrade my phone's android.
Thanks in advance!
Pish

I do not understand you because there is an official 2.2 update download by Motorola Software Update tool
so why to root etc and about Rom Manager was a bad idea to use it too bad because that's nice device
now use this thread to return to stock rom if this is not working return it to the shop/service
also a collection of roms for Milestone here

Thanks for your reply ruscan.
The phone is still working without problems with Android 2.1. I just wanted to update it to 2.2 or 2.3 to be able to install applications on my SD card since this is not possible with 2.1.
I'll research about updating it with Motorola Software Update tool, but if you recommend me to stay in 2.1 I'll do it
Thanks a lot.

Android 2.2 is first version to include support to move apps to sdcard so update it to official 2.2 also try a custom rom based on Cyanogenmod/ MIUI if you want but if you don't have enough experience with flashing is better to stay on stock rom at this time (I suppose you never flashed a new rom on your phone)
If you want to stay on 2.1 then install an app like app2sd or other from Market
well, to answer your question your first flash/update should be Froyo- it's good enough also this is official update so no risk there ...then experiment others but read a lot about and choose a rom with detailed instructions also use a laptop on battery to upgrade if something is wrong when flashing you are entering a lot of troubles

I recommend that you upgrade to 7.2.0 CyanogenMod ... in this issue "http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=941346" and here's a guide on how to do it from your stock rom .. "http://www.mrmuh.com/2012/01/update-a-motorola-milestone-from-motorola-firmware-to-cyanogenmod-7/" ..
Thanks for your replies!
Well, I executed the Motorola Software Update and my Milestone was updated to 2.2.1 and now I'm able to move apps to the SD card.
It is running without any problems, that's great
I'll wait for some days to see how my phone goes with this Android version and decide if I stay there or look forward to upgrade to Cyanogen mod.
Just a last quick question (not related to this original post), this 2.2.1 still has the original apps tab at the bottom of the screen. How can I replace it with the new launcher that Froyo is suppossed to have?
Thanks again for your help!

thanks to give me feedback it's very important to me -to learn from others' experience
well, that's not easy to replace it's integrated in framework/launcher code better is to install a new launcher from market but post here a picture to see more about that
if you root your device and want to make changes to system perform a system backup before

I am a proud owner of the AT&T Xperia Ion and am getting sick being unable to download the apps i want and i have read around here i can flash the international firmware so i could have ICS on my phone. Well as a noob to androids i am obviously nervous as to the effects of flashing. so i would like to know the risks of flashing it are. Once the official AT&T firmware is released can i switch to it? Will all the data stored in my phone be erased? Will i be able to use LTE? Will the warranty be voided? i would also like to know if there are other things i should know about, as well as the process in which i can carry out the flashing. thank you everybody
1. Just flash back to stock att ftf, and you should get the update. Or, flash the att ICS ftf when it becomes available.
2. It's a good idea to wipe between flashes, so if you did, all your data will be gone. I backup contacts and calendar through Google, so getting data back for me is easy. App data on the other hand will be gone. Or, risk it and don't wipe, but you will likely get some stability issues.
3. You can get lte.
4. If you flash back to stock before taking your phone for service, there should be no warranty issues. Is you take it in with Chinese firmware, that'll likely be a problem.
Sent from Rooted LT28at with ICS.

I'm also a noob in Android. Last weekend flashed ICS on my Xperia, following the procedure for rooting. It took me maybe two hours to get all the instructions and download everything I needed. You´ll basically need the firmwares, Android SDK (the link is in the post with instructions, second one in the thread), Flashtool (the latest Windows version, which comes with the drivers for Ion, is in http://androxyde.github.com/Flashtool/). I followed everything from the instructions, but wasn't getting the same response from the ADB commands, it still worked.
Two things are missing from those instructions:
1. To have hotspot activated, you'll need to first flash the international GB firmware, wiping everything in your device (be sure to make backups of everything you´ll want, don´t trust Google backup).
2. Right after flashing ICS, Flashtool won't recognize your phone, even if you have the USB debugging option on. You'll have to update your PC drivers by going to Control Panel, Device Manager, and choose to have Windows search for updated drivers (while the phone is connected, of course). You´ll know you got it right when Device Manager displays a different name for your phone, and Flashtool is able to tell you the software version. At that point you can run the second part of the rooting procedure.
Mmh...
Hello!
When will be released the official ice cream sandwich for my xperia ion lt28i? (international version, bought from Hong Kong)
No time given really. I am guessing at the same time the US releases their's so will the European (International) Version. So maybe September / October time frame, could be earlier.
Hi there.
I have a stock ROM .042, and I want to re-flash a it (or a newer stock ROM that can be rooted) to solve some problems I'm having with my Xperia Play (R800i, from Spain). I once flashed the official ROM I have, so I know it's not difficult, but I need help to refresh my memory and to solve some quick doubts:
- What is the newest ROM for my R800i that can be rooted? I thought it was the .042, but I read of somebody with the .058 rooted (wich I think is newer than .042). Where can I download this newer ROM (I already have the .042)?
- In this time I suppose that have appeared new tools to flash our Xplays. What's the best way to flash my Xplay? I would apreciate a link to a tutorial please.
- After that, what's the best way to root the Xplay?
- How can I save all the SMS i have on the phone? I have important and personal conversations I don't want to get lost.
- Any advice you can give me before flashing?

If you bootloader is unlocked, you can flash a custom kernel and have root on any ROM. I'm currently on the .069 version and everything is working fine.

You can either use the ADB tool that comes with the Android SDK, or use Flashtool (http://androxyde.github.com/)
- After that, what's the best way to root the Xplay?
If you install a custom kernel, it will automatically root your ROM (I suggest using DooMLord's kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1176502)
- How can I save all the SMS i have on the phone? I have important and personal conversations I don't want to get lost.
Just search for "SMS backup" in the Play Store, and you should find a number of apps that do the job.
- Any advice you can give me before flashing?

I am running Resurrection-Remix (6.1.0 - 17 June '18)
Although it works great, the audio quality is bad (even with viper4a) and Gcam (with night sight) is not stable.
Hence, I wanted your advice with a newer ROM (and stable) that has better compatibility with Gcam and runs original audio libraries if possible.
Secondly, if I wanted to get back to the original fw and relock, could you share the guide?
I came across a 32bit version for Gcam (https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/google-camera-mods/lg-q7-google-camera-snapdragon-t3827458)
- does it work with stock fw? Would prefer to go back to stock but have Gcam working.
Thanks a lot!

Why would you want to relock?
For relock you need a signed ROM. I'm not sure if the current firmware is available signed.
Biggest problem: Installing an old version and afterwards doing OTA gives the risk of hard brick (if bootloader on your device is newer than that of the ROM you install).
Advantage of relock would be that you can use Google pay. You can also achieve this starting unlocked by installing Magisk.
Advantage of unlocked state without rooting is that you can do Nandroid backup. If something goes wrong you can install root and analyze.
Having a (re-)locked device you need to wipe all data for unlocking if anything goes wrong. This is usually an unnecessary risk.
Hi, a have recently purchased the XZ2 Compact single Sim model, it should arrive later this week. While waiting, I would appreciate everyone's opinion on which stock firmware version is best in terms of performance and battery life:
• Android 8 Oreo
• Android 9 Pie
• Android 10
Or if you guys haven't found a any difference, between firmware versions at all, then please comment below !
Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your suggestion, I just meant stock, without rooting, or installing any mods. Like has Sony made it worse with a9/a10 official update, or is there no major performance loss when upgrading ?

I have never used stock as-is, because of Sony bloatware, restrictions, etc, but I typically prefer stock UI over most custom ROM UIs, so if I can get eXistenZ, I will always go with it. @niaboc79 has been the master of Sony roms going back to at least 4.4. Between UI customization and under the hood type stuff, there's no better option I have found. With root and eXistenZ, the whole firmware is at your control...
If you're only interested in straight-stock vs. custom ROM, then custom ROM is by far better, but not sure why you would limit yourself to straight stock if that's the case, because you have to unlock bootloader and root to use custom ROM. The only advantage of straight stock is official support/security, which is arguably n/a in this case, since the last official update was 2 years ago...

Hi, ah yes, I also prefer rooting and custom roms, but there's chance the device won't be in unlocked, because I ordered it from Aliexpress, and it's the Japanese Docomo version. Anyway I also heard that some features and good photo quality, get lost when unlocking ? Is there a work around if the DRM keys get lost ?

I don't think there's any such thing for this phone. Some have found a way to dump ta, but not to restore it, so not much use...
I upgraded to 10 to start with, then unlocked bl, etc. I think that's the best way. There's much discussion in the forums about camera function and drm in regards to 8 and 9, (ask @MartinX3 or @Pandemic), and seems like there may be different things you can do...
I'm not so hung up on the finer aspects of camera functionality. I think the difference is pretty subtle. Camera is good for me, (probably better on stock with unlocked bl than on custom/AOSP).

Not sure what you mean by kernel brand, but you know if flashed properly because the ui and options will be drastically different with eXistenZ compared to stock. If everything's the same, then it's not flashed.

Firstly twrp is not flashing anything always some error of storage access or something. then i try to flash on los recovery, and it works for lineage perfect flash, but for existenz stock zip it flashes everything no errors but doesn't change anything on the stock rom (.618 clean install) i can't seem to figure it out...

- Which version of TWRP? Make sure you are using the right one. Should be this one - https://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-xz2/development/recovery-twrp-3-3-1-0-t4074305
- Did you follow this, (from eXistenZ thread):
Flash latest android 10 firmware with Newflasher and boot it once.
Reboot in bootloader mode with adb (adb reboot boolloader) and boot TWRP (see TWRP thread for instructions).
Inside TWRP, go in settings and uncheck unmount system before flashing.
Mount system partition and Flash eXistenZ Quidim cleaner.
Boot once, it shouldn't reach pin code screen, reboot in bootloader mode with adb.
Boot TWRP, mount system partition and flash the rom.
Flash Magisk.
(e.g. - make sure to boot once before flashing, use adb for bootloader mode, check system in TWRP, etc...)

I used 3.4.00 twrp, maybe should try 3.3.10. Also i flashed .618 which is 10 though not the latest but it should be the same thing.
The rom seems to flash, because i get the existenz custom settings on phone settings, idk if that is all it does.
