Flashing ICS?

OK I get my device tomorrow and I'm so happy! I plan to root it and I just wanted to know if flashing an ICS can potentially harm the device? Say that I flash back to a GB rom will everything still be perfect and work? Thanks

Do a nandroid backup first and if something goes wrong you can allways restore the back up and voila everything working perfect again. I do it all the time

Any flash can potentially harm a device...like docmarioce stated nandroid first. You can always pull one of the GB recovery ROMs from the Dev forum to go completely back to GB.
I'd highly, highly recommend watching some of qbking77's youtube videos on flashing, he's done an amazing job putting these together.

You have to Odin back to EL29 if you are on an ICS ROM and want to go back to GB.
Read, read, read before flashing any ROM

Don't use the recovery found on ANY ICS ROM. That means if you flash CM9, Calk's, Blendz, Venum (any ICS Rom leak), you will have ICS Rogue Repack Recovery which is known for BRICKING so many phones.
Note that, it's not the creator of the Rogue Recovery repack to blame, it is that Samsung is packing faulty kernels; Steady Hawkin, the creator, has even bricked his phone using his own tried and true methods. For some reason, the samsung kernels for ICS mess up the partitions on the phone when the recovery on an ICS leak is used.
So to sum things up.
1. DO NOT FLASH/WIPE/ RESTORE anything with the recovery repacked with the ICS leak ROMs.
2. If you want to flash, odin stock EL26 CWM.
(You might want to use the autoroot method by sfhub to install because odin'ing stuff gives you a yellow triangle on boot—Don't trust me on this, just a guess)
3. DO NOT FLASH/WIPE/RESTORE or even think of using the recovery found on any ICS ROM. Some CM9 users have bricked their phone simply by wiping cache on the recovery in CM9.
When you boot into recovery on an ICS ROM LEAK, and you see ROGUE, DO NOT FLASH/WIPE RESTORE! Run away!
My tone might be overexaggerated, but there have been many bricks reported on the CM9 dev thread here that I frequent. Those who used the rogue repack kernels found on ICS rom leaks instead of taking the safer route of odin'ing stock EL26 CWM and flashing/wiping/restoring on that, have bricked their phones.

Flashing ICS
I have successfully flashed a ICS ROM and then restored a backup to GB. This was before I was warned I have seen many of my friends hard brick there phone. I am waiting for a stable ICS ROM with a stable CWM.

I have been hearing from people that the official ICS rom comes out March 15 I hope it does cant wait.

ICS is actually being pushed to the International version now in some places. I don't honestly thing we will see a March 15th date for us however (but hey I could be wrong)
As for Flashing ICS please read carefully there have been a ton of Bricks flashing ICS roms with ICS based kernels that have a recovery added to them. Your best bet honestly is to relax and chill read for awhile or a bit and when you feel confident in doing it then do so. My words for you ALWAYS keep Odin handy and if you do want to go back to a GB based rom then Odin a GB rom (like sfhub's EL29 Stock rooted) and push a GB based kernel with his auto root package.

Some people are lucky when using the ICS kernel recovery; in fact I am one of them . But eventually that luck will run out. I'm fortunate that I learned about its dangers before I could get a chance to brick my phone.

Yes some have been lucky this is true. But when I see one of our own devs Brick their device from doing it not just users (thought they do count as well) I tend to be on the safe side and give people the way not only myself but others have done things for flashing between different roms and have so far always been safe

Here is what worked for me...
Download stock rom for ics fc07
Download rogue stock fc07 kernel
Place both on external SD card
Use sfhub's one click root method
Use sfhub's clockwork method
Make a backup
Wipe everything and run calks format all zip
Flash the rom and kernel (and modem) in the same setting and ur gtg

I would say as long as you have Odin and take your time (whether its going to ICS or back to Gingerbread) then you will have no problems. If you want to be really safe, make it a rule that you flash ICS from a Gingerbread EL26 kernel w/CWM Recovery and if you want to flash something else once on ICS, Odin flash back to stock Gingerbread, Odin flash kernel with recovery and go from there. You can always PM me and I can shoot you links as well. Some people aren't having problems flashing from ICS w/ custom recovery but many have..including some devs

Make a nandroid backup. Then Odin the stock EL26 build with CWM recovery. From there you can go to AOKP. And use Calkulin's Format All to do the wiping if you use CWM to flash anything.

If you don't like ICS and want to revert back to what you had just Odin One-Click EL26 again, use the Auto Root Package to install CWM and restore the nandroid in recovery. If you do any wiping in recovery mode use Calkulin's Format All. It's much safer than manually wiping.
The link for the AOKP build has a really good how-to included with it. Takes you step by step through it.

Okay I have a question? Why do we have to Odin back to el26? why not EL29? Just wondering thats all...

Ya it has CWM5 on it that's be shown to be the safest to flash over to ICS. A lot of people ended up with bricked phones to discover that, lol.

I've flashed many times from EL29. It's flashing back that kills it. Wrong partition or something. Going forward is fine. Use Calk's Format all. And try not to restore data. It sometimes breaks things.

I think the issue is that you want to be using a certain version of CWM, and not any other recoveries like Rogue builds (no offense). That being said, I have flashed ICS from EL29 plenty of times. Get Mobile Odin Lite and our flash kernel from XDA (only available from XDA). Get the CWM EL26 kernel that everyone is using. Mobile Odin the kernel and hold the power button and up volume on reboot. It isn't much different or take much longer than rebooting into recovery.

Honestly OP there are stickys and instructions in every thread on how to do these things safely and (no offense) but if those were not enough and you still had to make a thread to ask again.... Maybe just maybe you should chill till they come up with a solid no problems method. I believe MeWarning gave you a lot of info as well as a few others.
Also they say to use EL26 but it seems that all recoveries EL29 and lower can be used with out issue. I would follow what the masses are doing though and not question too much especially if you are afraid....IMHO

I wouldnt use an el29 rogue repack to flash any aosp ics roms, might be safe for TW ics but aosp all recommend el26+cwm5 because that was the last build with stock cwm actually baked into the kernel and is the safest for flashing aosp ics. Mobile Odin and el26+cwm are 2 good items to keep on your SD card for flashing ics its quick and easy and doesn't take much longer to flash using that method than just booting to baked in recovery to flash

For starters you can use this gb kernel that will directly boot into cwm (won't boot system until something is flashed over it) : here
Then I suggest reading about some of the options available to kernel/recoveries that are safe to use to wipe/backup/restore once in ICS.

Hello. I am brand new to this, but can follow directions really well. I Rooted my Galaxy S II EL29 w/o a problem and followed the directions here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229... to get a ROM version of ICS.
Now, my questions are (After searching through the forum for two days):
What is the BEST and SAFEST way to try and install other leaked ROMs?
I currently have 'Android system recovery <3e>'. Do you recommend something better or stick with what I have?
Also, Which ROM do you believe is the best one that comes close (w/o bugs) to the latest ICS/Jelly Bean?
P.S. ~ How can I add Beats Audio after flashing a ROM?

So you have stock rooted FF18 Rom and kernel now. You need a kernel with custom recovery to flash anything. The safest way is to go to sfhub's thread where you got ICS tar file and click on the Auto Root link in that thread. That will tell you how to add Clockwork Mod recovery to the setup you have now. It's a script you run on your pc with the phone plugged in. Pretty easy and he explains it pretty thoroughly. After you have CWM, good idea to boot into recovery and backup your phone before you go any further. Hold volume up and power at the same time and hold them until you are in recovery mode. Select backup and let it run.
Once you've done that and want to get on another ICS Rom, flash Calkulin's format all zip made especially for this phone. It will wipe everything except your sd card in the proper order and has never bricked a phone as far as I know. It will clear all your apps and data the same way flashing the FF18 tar file did so you'll have to reinstall all your apps. Get it here.

When the format all its done, flash your new Rom. Wicked Sensations and Agat63's Rom are a couple of my favorites but there are several I haven't tested yet. If you want to try AOKP roms or Cyanogen Mod, better do more reading. They are different animals than the Touchwiz based roms so you have to know what you are doing with the recoveries on those.
We don't have jelly bean for this phone yet and I can't help you with beats audio except I think a couple of Mijjah's roms might have it built in. I don't think you can flash it on top of a Rom but I could be wrong. Good luck
Edit: Wicked Sensations was just updated and has a few elements from jelly bean in it. I plan on trying out over the weekend

After waiting awhile for a response decided to read and read and read more. Basically doing some more research so I DO NOT BRICK my mobile phone.
This is what I did... I flashed back to EL29 Rooted, installed Clockwork Mod recovery, and installed Team VeNuM Blue Boa v0.2. Everything seems to work fine. I did find and installed 'Beats Audio Mod' an hour ago. Oh yeah, I did do a Backup right after installing CWM.
Now, is it SAFE to flash another ICS ROM, like Wicked Sensations or Agat63's ROM, after flashing Calkulin's Format All Zip? QBKING77 stated that he recommends going back to Ginger Bread and installing CWM before flashing another ICS. He does not recommend going from ICS to ICS. What do you think about that? Also, can you send me the links that has the instructions to install the ROMS you like? Thank you.

You are doing things right by reading up and waiting until you are confident you know what to do. That's why I am more than willing to help. This stuff has all been covered but there are still plenty of new people who are tired of waiting for ICS rooting this phone recently. The Odin method QBking describes IS the safest way and I did it that way quite a few times when the leaks became available. It involves more steps and you need your pc. Since you already know how to use Odin maybe you would feel safer doing it that way. However, many of us have used the format all zip to switch ICS roms and its been done probably thousands of times with no problems. Never heard of a brick yet using it. Also keep in mind most of the custom roms such as Boa already have a custom recovery built in so you won't have to keep using Auto Root to add CWM. Good job

Check the wiki section. They have the roms listed there. Also first before anything read "how not to brick" and for FF18 there is a rooted one click Odin. Its in the dev section.

I've heard that Blu Kuban is a cool ROM. I currently use CyanogenMod 9 Alpha 6. You can root your stock ROM with this guide: E4GT Wiki
Try searching next time

Team venum has some awesome roms. Just make sire to read the how not to brick thread first.

Welcome to our street on XDA! Glad to see you have an Epic touch! I personally enjoy Cyanogen Mod Alpha 6, but it does have a few bugs. The one that annoys me the most being that cusotm ringtones are not supported yet. (The gf doesn't like not having her custom ringtone when she calls me ) But overall it is highly customizable and a great rom! I also like Blu Kuban (yes I did spell that right, Blu Kuban) but it is a little too Blue for my personal liking, but other than that I hear great things about it. From what I understand, the main things bricking Epic Touches right now is not being careful when flashing kernels. Currently, I believe that the recommended standard is when you wish to upgrade to a new rom, you first flash this in odin and then update: http://chris41g.devphone.org/EpicTouch/Stock Repack/EL26/StockCWM-EL26.tar.md5
This is a Gingerbread Kernel, and most people seem to recommend it when upgrading to ICS. In other words, Say one was on a stock FF18 root, one would open odin, flash this, then in the Clockwork recovery provided (the way people usually upgrade Modems, Roms, etc...) flash their new ICS Rom.
To Root, I might take a look at this, but I personally have not tried it, and don't know if it works or not. :

I believe in order to do that, in theory one would do the following:
Download that
Flash it in Odin
Done
If one wanted to go to Stock FF18 to Cyanogen Mod, I believe one would do the following:
Download and flash that rooted FF18 above,
Flash that EL26 CWM file I linked to earlier
Flash the Cyanogen Mod Alpha 6 http://e4gtcm.blogspot.com/p/cm9-status.html
Before you go ahead with any of this though, I would confirm that this is working with others, as I personally have not ever tried to start out on a non-rooted ICS Rom.
Also, whats called an emmc bug is currently going around, that hard-bricks devices in theory. Do be careful of this. It seems to be contagious through recoveries and kernels. I would read up more on this, as I myself am not fully educated upon the matter.
Also, please note that I do not take credit for any Kernels or Roms mentioned in this post, and that I in no way helped develop them. I also take no credit in discovering the emmc bug, I simply read about it, and have bricked one of my devices by getting the bug.

I'm also a relative noob, at least to Samsung devices. I am on stock rooted EG30 right now (no CWM). Say I wanted to flash Blu Kuban. From what I gather, I would Odin the EL29 kernel+CWM recovery only using the PDA option in Odin (not the full ROM), then boot into the recovery just Odin'ed, wipe data/factory reset (or use the Format All x2 script), then flash the Blu Kuban as instructed in the Blu Kuban thread. Correct? I don't have to wipe internal or external sd card either, right?
Also, once I do that, if I wanted to flash a different kernel, like agat FF18 built from source, how would I do that? Would I just use CWM to flash, or would I have to Odin?

You have done your homework ... once you have blu kuban installed...it comes with a rom updater where you can change kernals modems and such. You can personalize it for your preferences. Good luck and welcome to the blu family.

Thanks. Are there any standing issues with the Blu Kuban ROM? It says all existing FF18 issues are still there, but what in particular are those issues? Also, should I use EL29 or EL26 as the "base" kernel/recovery to flash from, or does it matter?

I've had the rom for almost 2 months now.. No issues at all.. Some black on black text here and there but that's not big in my opinion compared to some of the issues I've seen on other roms... And to flash you should be able to use agats source kernel and use ruj wipe in his OP

I used el29 when I first flashed this Rom. When you first install blu it has a caulks fe22 kernal...but with the updater you can go to the latest ff18. Ruj (blu developer ) will prob do a slight Makeover based on the released F18. I really enjoy his from. Great battery and love he themeing. Plenty of help in the developer area as well. Make sure after you flash you update your profile and prl... under about phone. Enjoy ICS!

Final question: if I wanted to restore my nandroid backup of my stock rooted EG30 ROM, I would still need to Odin back to the EL26 recovery/kernel first, correct?

I think so on that...since the backup is based on GB. Took me forever to pull the trigger on rooting my E4gt... but very happy with it now. Like getting a new phone. Have you gotten the ota update from sprint with regards to ice?

No, I've been on stock rooted EG30 since I got my phone, and I disabled updates as well.

won't boot into CWM recovery
this thread seems like a great place for my noob questions too. I thought i knew my way around my HTC Evo 4G, but Samsung is like learning a whole new language...
I'm running CM9 alpha 4, with EL29 baseband version and FE16 kernel, and i have CWM 5.0.2.7 installed (i know i do because i made some nandroids). I can't get it to reboot into CWM now though - only the stock recovery. What am i doing wrong?

Calkulin's Mod Questions

What are the changes from version 2.9 to v3 that some people arn't liking? I hear some people like v2.9 better.
In Calkulin's mods, are the bloatware apps and running services already removed, or is that up to each person to do?

Personally I don't see much of a difference in the 2.9.x to 3.0 releases. I run 3.0 and get great battery life using the El29 stock repack kernel and modem (although this week I'm going to be testing EL13 stock repack kernel and modem). And to answer the bloatware question, Calkulin has a script posted that de-bloats the ROM, as well as "bare" releases. Both options work well. Cheers!

And to answer the bloatware question, Calkulin has a script posted that de-bloats the ROM, as well as "bare" releases. Both options work well. Cheers!

Yes, I'm seeing those scripts in this thread. They look helpful. After you run the Wipe script then flash the rom, do you do a first time boot, then go back into the system menu and run the de-bloat script? What is the order of running these? It's my impression that you can run his added scripts at anytime, right?

What I normally do when flashing is run the format all script twice (the second time just for my own peace of mind!), flash the ROM and then boot up for the first time. Just to make sure everything's looking good ill usually just fool around with the fresh install for a few minutes, then power down and run the debloat script. Reboot after that, and check everything out. From there on out when flashing scripts (like tdunhams tweaks or other mods) I always flash one script, boot up, and do some basic testing to make sure everything went smooth. I've heard horror stories of people flashing a bunch of scripts at once and then having issues and having to start from scratch anyway. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks, that is helpful. The last piece I am missing is how to do the wipes and rom loads. I've been into the Samsung system menu (where I flashed the official ICS load I got). Will the stock samsung system menu allow me to Wipe and Calkulin's rom flash, or do I need ClockWork?

Sorry I had assumed you were already using a custom recovery. So you are running stock ics pushed from Sammy right now? Basically in order to do all this fancy business you need to have a kernel with a touch recovery. If you're running stock ics right now, I think its safe to say you can Odin (from your PC) the EL26 stock kernel repacked with cwm and then flash Calukins rom zip from there. Not sure of you necessarily need to go to EL26 first but I just like to play it on the safe side when dealing with ics. I believe you could also use one of the one click flashes found in the dev forums and then flash Calukins rom from there (assuming its a rooted one click package). Hopefully this makes sense.
And just be careful if you do want to return to ics after a while, you should always flash the EL26 stock kernel when flashing to ics. I believe the bricking issue has been solved and its pretty safe to flash ics with other kernels but nothing wrong with playing on the safe side.

Yes, I have the stock ICS load from Sprint/Samsung now. Now I need to figure out the best way to get the on click EL26 w/ CWM. Then I can flash up to EL29 Calk v3.

This link should bring you to the One-click flasher for EL26 stock rooted (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1416477&highlight=one+click). After flashing that, you need to get a CWM kernel (http://kernelrepo.chris41g.org/default.asp?startFolder=\Recovery+Kernels\GB\Chris41g\Stock+CWM\TAR) so grab the EL26 .tar file and flash via Odin. Once that's done, you should have a CWM recovery with a rooted phone, allowing you to flash Calukin's rom zip via CWM. I would have linked earlier but I was on my phone not the PC and it's a pain to grab links on the run!
If you aren't too familiar with Odin, no worries it's very easy to do. I don't have time to hammer it all out right now but I'm sure wherever you find the download link for Odin, there will be a guide on how to use it right along side it.
With all of that said, you could probably follow the same steps to flash but while using any of the other One-click versions (EG30, EL29, etc etc) as long as you are dealing with GB roms and kernels ONLY. I know I said it before, but just to reiterate in case you are new to all this, use the EL26 as your starting point when flashing back to ics at any point. It's probably just me being super careful but I'd rather that then end up with a very expensive paperweight! Keep us posted, I'll try and check the thread later on.
Edit: I guess there are other ways to get CWM rocking on the GB platforms coming from a simply stock rooted system (via auto-root) but I just find it easier to flash the kernel right over top the old one, it keeps it simple. And not to belittle you or anything, but if you are new to flashing roms and the likes, I would REALLY recommend watching some videos on how to do everything. QBking has some GREAT tutorials on youtube to show you the basics (most importantly how to NOT brick your phone) as well as many other videos found on this forum and the ACS forums...check them out! Is there a reason you suggest going back to EL26?
Rolling back to GB from ICS, I was going to go this route:
Step 1: EL29

No you should be in the clear. Only reason I suggested EL26 was because when ics dropped pre-source, to avoid bricking you'd always go back to EL26 and flash from that stock repack kernel. You should be OK with the route you're taking though.
