Hey guys. I bet you have heard this question a million times, but I am looking at purchasing a new phone. I currently have a Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1.1 which I'm going to give my girlfriend...
I am debating on buying another Galaxy Nexus (which is AU$429 brand new) or a Quad-Core SGS3 (which I found for AU$633 for 16GB model, brand new)
I know it comes down to pure Android vs Touchwiz and Dual Core vs Quad Core. As far as I can see, there is no real need for a quad core phone just yet.. unless someone can point out why a quad core phone is better?
If money was no object.. which phone would you choose and why?
I plan on purchasing one tomorrow. Please help me decide.

Gnex....sgs3 will give you more of a hassle when rooting....and pure Google is better.

Deep down, you already know the answer.
I'd take SG3, better hardware.
My HOX is better IMO though, I love the new LCD2.

I also recently had to choose between the HTC One X, SGS3 and Galaxy Nexus, when I heard about Jellybean I chose the Nexus. I tried both and I personally prefer the pure android interface over HTC Sense (which IMO is way better than TouchWiz), also the Jelly Bean update makes it feel quicker than (or a quick as) the One X/SGS3
The downfall of choosing the Galaxy Nexus is that a number of high end HD games on the Play Store require a quad core processor (specifically Tegra 3), however I rarely seriously game on my phone other than playing the occasional Angry Birds-esque games, which run just fine.
Also, the SGS3 has a MicroSD slot meaning memory is not limited, and there is also a 64GB version (according to http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9300_galaxy_s_iii-4238.php).
The only place where a quad core processor offers more than a dual core is in benchmarks and gaming. Make your choice according to what is more important for you.
I chose the Galaxy Nexus over the HTC One X/SGS3
EDIT: The SGS3 also has a better camera and bigger screen (same technology though, but it has less DPI)
GNex is great. SgsIII is crap. Have fun.

I personally find Sense not useful.. how about the multitasking issue on one X?
Cause the S4 is the best dual core cpu currently. And the TI Omap 4460 on our GNex wasn't even the best dual core cpu when it came out!

That's wrong, the TI OMAP was the only SOC that natively supported HD Video Decoding and LTE/HSPA+42(disregard the existence of the s3 for now). Its also better at multi threaded processing than the Exynos. It has dual channel memory and uses ARMs NEON engine for better media playback. So overall, the TI OMAP is just more flexible and has more features to play with....oh and it supports 1080p HD...something the 4210 didn't support.
Exynos is only "better" because of the Mali GPUs it is paired with, which is a great GPU. Still doesn't compare to the 12-core Tegra GPU. Don't even get me started about how much better the S4 is at power management.

Can't agree. Maybe it opens apps slightly faster.. but my galaxy nexus is slightly smoother than my gs3 and its h/w accelerated, that's why I used the nexus instead of gs3 and I saw the one x in the shop and it isn't smooth not as smooth as galaxy nexus with jelly bean, not even close
Sent from my Jelly Beaned GNexus
I find it amusing how people are so stuck on this smoother thing...The GNEX, One X and S3 are all smooth devices. Let's get real, they are all great phones. Do people really sit there with these three phones and swipe them side by side and see which is smother. Do people actually open apps and see which one opens a hair quicker and then base there decision on which phone to purchase because of those results?
If smoothness is the most important thing to you on a phone then by an iPhone and get it over with.
Otherwise, I do not understand why people stress out of the speed of these devices. It is like when new Roms come out people are always posting how fast it is. This Rom is so fast, faster then xxx....This is the fasted Rom out. Then I try it and I am like they all feel the f'n same! lol
Hi, in my honest opinion its impossible ,if you have jelly bean ,nexus is the smoothest phone u can have ,also better to s3.
Jelly bean smooth is based on 3 factor ,first of all try to install new ROM or wipe or so ,wrong apps like task manager or battery manager can slow your phone
1) GPU ,with project butter GPU is more important, if you want try overclocked kernel ,but for me is stupid ,my GNex is smooth without too
2) Touch ,make sure your don't have 2 dollars screen protector
3) CPU ,the main revolution of android 4+ is using interactive governor ,this permits accords due first 2 factor ,when user touch an interaction to spin up CPU to Max and when finish touch back to Min,
Conclusion :
Try different kernel that have interactive governor ,if u use stock there is no problem, try wipe or uninstall bloat app ,android don't require stupid apps like task manager .
My friend has a one X ,smoothness is the same

That's because the majority of users posting about "fastness" are little kids who don't actually use the phone for anything more than games and stupid apps.
Does it honestly matter if it takes 0.1 millisecond longer to launch an app? Its not the end of the world, you cant expect a phone released in December 2011 to be on par with a phone released 2 months ago?

You guys are right. I have a perfect gem galaxy nexus with no problems with perfectly calibrated screen, and battery is amazing. I am currently at 43% percent battery life with 17h so far with almost 50 percent screen on time just with random kernel and no display tweaks. Going to do this guide to make it even more better http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1599025 . I am astonished. I told him I am going to hold it off for now. basically this. then you can even get an accessory for the Nexus after. you know, if you're into that kind of thing.
Do you like listening to music on your phone? If so, steer clear of anything that HTC have made in the last 2 years. They have a serious design flaw in the way they've been shielding their audio chip set, so there is a real problem with line noise. You get this low hissing sound in the background of every track. I had to ditch my One X cause it was giving me headaches.

I can't decide between this and evo4glte (will probably go with the lg s4pro phone instead idk...), what's the difference hardware wise between this and the gnex? The evo4gllte seems like a huge upgrade for me but I like the galaxy s series..
Edit: Let me verify if the only real difference between this and the gnex is the chipset and cameras, I might upgrade to that instead since it'll be like owning the s3 in my own little world but half priced

Hi,
About a year and a half ago I went from an iPhone 3 to a Galaxy Gio (my first android phone) and I've been happy ever since with Android. But the phone is on it's last legs, so time for a new phone.
Now with the arrival of the Nexus 4 I was really excited about it and was thinking about getting one.
But the issues with delivery, the fact it can't be found in the Netherlands and the fact that no retailer sells it for the 299e it's supposed to go (LG told a big Spanish retailer to sell it for 599 I read yesterday, MediaMarkt in Germany sells it for 395) made me look for an alternative.
I don't want to spend too much, so my budget is around 300 as I recently bought an iPad for the "heavy" things such as games.
I purely want a phone with a large screen that is able to play games you play for a few minutes. Stuff like Temple Run, racegames etc etc.
I'm now leaning towards the Google Nexus, my question is how future proof is this phone? Will it be able to run games that come out, say, the next year or so? Will updates after 4.2 also appear for the Galaxy Nexus?
I found a brand new one for 249e, is it still worth the money? Many thanks in advance.
Definitely worth it . Over a Year old and its still one of the best phones on the market . It has no problem with any current games and I don't see that changing for some time. Dual cores are still on top! a quad core is almost pointless ....for now. They still put the dual core chip sets in the galaxy Slll.

They put dual core S4 in the American S3 because of LTE not playing well with Exynos Quad. Same for the HTC One X/S.
I just bought my second one. It is a very very capable device. Personally I don't game on my phone aside from the occasional Bad Piggies or GTA Vice City when I'm bored at work, I use my Nexus 7 for all my gaming needs, but when it comes to every day computing it is still a top performer. A lot of us feel the LG Nexus is a step down in terms of build quality and the cost isn't really worth the benefits. Yeah it has more ram and processors but the camera is just as sad compared to the what it could/should have been. Its just not worth that extra cost. For instance I bought a mint GSM Nexus about 2 weeks ago, it is 6 months old and I got 4 OEM batteries + charger, and 7 cases including a SGP Neo Hybrid and a mess of screen protectors for 299. I would have paid no less then 399 w/tax & ship for a Nexus4 with nothing else.
It would be better for most of us to keep on chugging with the Gnex until the next Nexus device comes out that should be a good sized leap from the N4. Phones have that 2 cycle evolutionary leap. Like how the first HTC phones were great and the 2nd series (sensation....) Sucked pretty bad. But the OneX is great and the OneX+ isn't a huge improvement. Same thing with the Nexus phones. The Nexus One was spectacular. 1GHZ processor when 550 was unheard of. 512 ram, when 256 was normal and a S-AMOLED screen. The Nexus S was moderate. A curved screen, NFC and 1gb ram ( I could be wrong about the ram) were the only major improvements. But then the Galaxy Nexus introduced a dual core processor, huge 720P HD screen, on screen keys and a lot more.
I think the next Nexus will be huge

Because nobody sells it for 299 in Europe. The 299 version goes for 395. Black market at the moment is 500e.
Plus there is a 7 week waiting time for the people that already ordered. It will take well over 2 to 3 months before it will be widely available. Who knows how long it will take before it's available for 299.
Maybe in a year or so I'll upgrade to the 4 .

It doesn't make sense to buy any of those devices at that price. Especially not anything from HTC with the ONE coming out so soon.
Many online shopping portals are selling the 16gb nexus 4 for around 24 to 25k. That would be a better option than gnex plus i really feel the next major android update(KLP) will not be as lag free as jelly bean on gnex.

I bounce back and forth between my HTC One S (s4) and Galaxy Nexus.
If you have to choose from both, I'd say the Nexus, unless you love sense. The development community is larger for the Nexus. I like that it has a removable battery and a bigger screen. I'm switching back to my GN after his post.
I don't think there is much development for the S3 version of the One S. I will say sometimes the smaller size of the One S is nice and personally, I think the camera is better.

Many online shopping portals are selling the 16gb nexus 4 for around 24 to 25k. That would be a better option than gnex plus i really feel the next major android update(KLP) will not be as lag free as jelly bean on gnex.

Your going to need that 8 core processor just to deal with the usual android os lag by the time key lime pie comes out, i just hope one day Google can fix their os so it runs as smooth as iOS so phone manufactures don't have to keep doubling their cores Lol.

Yeah, I bought my wife an N4 as a surprise and now I have her old Gnex. As I said in my last post, I still the the Gnex has some legs, especially given the large development community. Also, I actually didn't mind running the Gnex on stock for a bit. Of the last four phones I've had, this one made it the longest before getting a custom ROM. I finally rooted last night and am running the lastest CM 10.1 nightly.
I will say this, with all the different ROMs available for the GNex, it'd be like having a new phone all the time (if you're a flashaholic). As much as I like my HTC One S and respect the developers, there aren't nearly as many ROMs available. Viper 2.1 (Sense) is great, and I also like Liquid Smooth (AOSP) for the One S,
Both phones have run smooth for me, on different Roms. I'm still trying to get good photos with my Gnex (any suggestions?), so the one big advantage of the One S is the camera.
Again, good luck and let us know what you go with. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions on comparing the two.
Nick
LG N4 is $489 for 16gb model here which i think is not cheap like it is elsewhere like in the US, certainly not worth almost $500 like it is here.

Paarth I suggest you to get a nexus 4 16 GB if you get it for around 24k-25k otherwise gnex 16GB for 19k-20k is always a good option but consider a nexus 4 because believe it or not gnex is already close to 1.5 years old....
In the end its always the war between nexuses homie!!!!
you stay in Mumbai mate.. you know we getting it for 34k at alfa.. and gnex for 19k.. now you telme
8gb one i need to enquire now

I wouldn't recommend the Galaxy Nexus to anyone anymore. I bought mine in July and it was considered old even then. I'd go with the S4 or if you can, the Nexus 4.
Gnex is old now, still OK but its hardware is outdated.
