How good is this phone still? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Hi,
About a year and a half ago I went from an iPhone 3 to a Galaxy Gio (my first android phone) and I've been happy ever since with Android. But the phone is on it's last legs, so time for a new phone.
Now with the arrival of the Nexus 4 I was really excited about it and was thinking about getting one.
But the issues with delivery, the fact it can't be found in the Netherlands and the fact that no retailer sells it for the 299e it's supposed to go (LG told a big Spanish retailer to sell it for 599 I read yesterday, MediaMarkt in Germany sells it for 395) made me look for an alternative.
I don't want to spend too much, so my budget is around 300 as I recently bought an iPad for the "heavy" things such as games.
I purely want a phone with a large screen that is able to play games you play for a few minutes. Stuff like Temple Run, racegames etc etc.
I'm now leaning towards the Google Nexus, my question is how future proof is this phone? Will it be able to run games that come out, say, the next year or so? Will updates after 4.2 also appear for the Galaxy Nexus?
I found a brand new one for 249e, is it still worth the money? Many thanks in advance.

Definitely worth it . Over a Year old and its still one of the best phones on the market . It has no problem with any current games and I don't see that changing for some time. Dual cores are still on top! a quad core is almost pointless ....for now. They still put the dual core chip sets in the galaxy Slll.

They put dual core S4 in the American S3 because of LTE not playing well with Exynos Quad. Same for the HTC One X/S.

I just bought my second one. It is a very very capable device. Personally I don't game on my phone aside from the occasional Bad Piggies or GTA Vice City when I'm bored at work, I use my Nexus 7 for all my gaming needs, but when it comes to every day computing it is still a top performer. Due in large part to the Project Butter enhancements that make it super speedy. Switching between applications or multi tasking is a breeze.

People still underestimate the dual core processors, the Snapdragon S4 dual core is still a beast processor.

Why not the Nexus 4 when it comes into stock? Same price, and next version of the phone.

A lot of us feel the LG Nexus is a step down in terms of build quality and the cost isn't really worth the benefits. Yeah it has more ram and processors but the camera is just as sad compared to the what it could/should have been. Its just not worth that extra cost. For instance I bought a mint GSM Nexus about 2 weeks ago, it is 6 months old and I got 4 OEM batteries + charger, and 7 cases including a SGP Neo Hybrid and a mess of screen protectors for 299. I would have paid no less then 399 w/tax & ship for a Nexus4 with nothing else.
It would be better for most of us to keep on chugging with the Gnex until the next Nexus device comes out that should be a good sized leap from the N4. Phones have that 2 cycle evolutionary leap. Like how the first HTC phones were great and the 2nd series (sensation....) Sucked pretty bad. But the OneX is great and the OneX+ isn't a huge improvement. Same thing with the Nexus phones. The Nexus One was spectacular. 1GHZ processor when 550 was unheard of. 512 ram, when 256 was normal and a S-AMOLED screen. The Nexus S was moderate. A curved screen, NFC and 1gb ram ( I could be wrong about the ram) were the only major improvements. But then the Galaxy Nexus introduced a dual core processor, huge 720P HD screen, on screen keys and a lot more.
I think the next Nexus will be huge

This phone rocks and I love it but recently 4.2.1 has been giving me issues and I feel like a beta tester for Google. Don't say flash factory images, I did and I factory reset a few times. Hoping on 4.2.2 to fix the issues otherwise this phone is still extremely capable and does everything I need it do and can easily last me another year.

That's how I want to use it too. Mostly for browsing, communicating and a game from time to time.
Plus it's very customizable with all the ROM's and kernels I saw here. .
I guess you guys will have a new member on your side soon .

Because nobody sells it for 299 in Europe. The 299 version goes for 395. Black market at the moment is 500e.
Plus there is a 7 week waiting time for the people that already ordered. It will take well over 2 to 3 months before it will be widely available. Who knows how long it will take before it's available for 299.
Maybe in a year or so I'll upgrade to the 4 .

E. I'd love to hear how the gnex "introduced" a 720p display.

Yep gnex is still an excellent device. Before I got my nexus 7 I was playing dead trigger and nova 3 on my gnex with no problems, only game my gnex ever struggled with was gta3. As far as web browsing and phone purposes, works like a phone is supposed too.
I intend on using my gnex at least until the next nexus is released, maybe longer.

Galaxy Nexus so much better than my Nexus S 4G

Is amazing that in only one year, the Galaxy nexus feels like it is years apart from my Nexus S 4G.
I have had my Galaxy Nexus for about four months now, haven't touched the Nexus S 4G since December, was away in drawer collecting dust. Got bored tonight, so I updated it to Android 4.0.4 ICS, and it runs smooth and looks pretty good. But man the device just feels and looks and feels now, and dated to be honest.
Physically the Nexus S is so bloated and thick looking, with cheap plastic shell, the Galaxy Nexus is much thinner, and feels like a premium high quality device, and the Nexus S feels cheap in comparison. And the screen LOL, the 720P is light years ahead of the Nexus S, let alone speed wise too, much faster and smoother.
These two phones feel like they were made years apart, not just one year. I just find it amazing how much better the Galaxy Nexus is over the Nexus S. No big point I am making here, just my quick observations tonight.

Yeah good point. Is cool how much just one year can make between devices. I bet the iPhone5 might be like that this year compared to 4S ?
I wonder if Nexus-Four Jellybean will be such a big upgrade ?

I upgraded from the T-Mobile Nexus S. Honestly I sometimes miss my Nexus S. I did like the size of the Nexus S despite it being smaller. It definitely was never as popular as the Galaxy Nexus, and that kind of made me like the phone even more. Don't get me wrong though, I do love my Galaxy Nexus and wouldn't trade it for any phone. I might even skip the next Nexus phone and keep this one longer.

So my question is, will the Nexus-Four be as big an upgrade to the current Galaxy Nexus as it was from the N-S ?

Yeah the Nexus-One was a special device. The first bad ass Android phone. Really showed Apple there is a strong competitor around.
The Nexus-S seemed underwhelming and hardware wise barely any better than the N-One. Plus no notification LED on the N-S was a big mistake.
The Galaxy Nexus is light years ahead of the Nexus-S in both build quality and components.
Wonder what the Nexus-Four will be like ?

I wish they would release the nexus devices in quarter 2 instead of quarter 4. Typically the new technology comes out at that time. So the nexus pulls up the rear in terms of hardware for the year. I understand it's the software that makes the phone desirable, but by time the nexus 4 is released, phones with the new hardware will start coming out.

Yeah the Nexus devices are only top notch for like 4 - 5 months tops. They come out tail end of the year with hardware that is close to outdated. And it seems like the next gen devices typically come out in April / May.
Like last year the Nexus-S was single core in December 2010, and April 2011 the dual core Galaxy S2 is released, being much faster. And again this year, December 2011 Verizon release the dual core Galaxy Nexus, and April 2012 HTC releases the quad core One X.
Also the fact that the original Nexus S was only 3G. Big mistake.

This is not entirely true. The Nexus One was one of the first devices out with the 1 Ghz snapdragon and 512 MB of RAM (which was not even supported ootb by the kernel).
The Nexus S didn't push for dual core, but Android was not optimized for dual core at that time. It did push forward with NFC and allowed Google to start rolling Google Wallet into the market.
The Galaxy Nexus introduced an entirely new platform (the OMAP platform) for Android.
I didn't know I bought a Galaxy Nexus to have top of the line specs (You're doing it wrong). Oh and by the way guys Tegra4 is supposed to be out by years end / beginning of next year so technically the One X is already partially outdated (See what I did there?).

I am comparing the one year difference between the two Nexus phones. The Galaxy Nexus is a major improvement over the Nexus-S is my point.
The HD 720p screen being #1 change, and also the size difference between the screens.
Plus build quality seems more premium and higher quality on the Galaxy Nexus.
Winder if the Nexus-Four will be that big of an upgrade over the current Galaxy Nexus ?

I wasn't too happy with my Nexus S. The 512MB of ram was driving me crazy. My home screen would reload multiple times a day.
With that said, I love my Galaxy Nexus. ICS is so polished.
I also miss the size of my Nexus S. It was the perfect size for me, but is hard to argue against the Galaxy Nexus screen when watching a video or reading a HQ!
When I take my NS out of the drawer and try to use it, I think its awful vs the GN. Small screen, low Res, slow... still like the size and design though.

Honestly not bad at all, but except CPU changes and induction charging, what are the better points compared to the GNEX ?
Unless a Verizon version launches later (like always seems to happen with Sprint Nexus devices), I'll be hanging onto my LTE Gnex until the next Nexus comes out late next year. I like my LTE, I like 32 GB of storage, and let's face it, Verizon has the best network in the country. That's pretty much indisputable.
Eh. I'm sorry, but after getting 4G LTE on my nexus I will not buy another phone without it. I'll get 4.2 on my current nexus and that will hold me over until a better device comes out. I really kinda hate LG. . .
The new device looks awesome. I think I'm jealous of the camera and new version of Android. Oh yeah. And that quad core S4. Lol. We still have a cool phone. We will have 4.2 soon enough.

Other than the big brother spec bump, bringing nexus hardware back to relevancy, Lifespan, is probably the main, albeit undersold, reward in buying the new nexus. Will the gnex still be adequate by the time nexus 5 rolls around? Maybe. But whatever the life of this phone, the 4 will far exceed it. And longevity is one of the key reasons Joe phone user purchases the nexus.

Right now I'm going stir crazy without a 10" tablet! I sold my old Nexus S and my LTE Motorola Xoom so I could have the cash to buy a Nexus 10. Since they aren't available until November 13, I'm going to go crazy without it! That Nexus 7 is great for reading in bed, but for doing anything productive, I needs me a 10" tablet. My laptop is going to get more use the next two weeks than it has in 2 months!
There's no comparison. Not even close. N4 is the best spec'd phone available on almost every component and costs the same as the Galaxy Nexus. If you bought a GN in the last 29 days, return it immediately. With all that said, the Galaxy Nexus is still an excellent phone.

I'll wait until I see the screen to decide that. After two Samsung Nexus in a row I'm ready for someone else and even a different screen tech.
The camera will be the main selling point for me. Absolutely love my GNex, but I find it funny whenever I see apologists try to act as if the camera isn't sub par.
Wireless charging, even though I like it, is only a gimmick (much like the curved screen of the GNex to be fair).
I have no plans on upgrading; that being said I also don't have insurance on my phone. If I had to replace it, I'd definitely spring for the N4 if I was going brand new instead of eBay/ CL.

Its not like the iPhone where there's like significant improvement every year over last year's model, the Nexus 4 is about the same size, all it really has on the GalNex is the 8MP camera, but coming from LG that may not even be an improvement, at least a noticeable one.

Just because it has twice the cores and twice the RAM, doesn't necessarily make it 2x faster. That's not how things like that work. It all depends on the application and how it's being used.
Such as browsing the web. It'll probably be just as "fast" on both phones (talking about the application, not webpage load time). Sure, the Nexus 4 will be a faster overall, but not 2x faster.
Now, when applications are going to be made to support all 4 of those cores, THEN you'll start seeing some very nice performance increases! That's one of the reasons why this is a great phone - it's pretty much future proofed for quite a while.
Although, I'm not buying it. I'm very happy with my GNex right now. It does everything I could ask it to and more. (Not to mention I'm stuck with version, but that's a different subject).

Actually you are wrong. He stated the CPU is 2-3 times faster. He did not say apps would be 2-3 times faster as you pointed out. In actuality the CPU on the Nexus 4 is a beast. Overclocked Galaxy Nexus at 1.7 GHz I can get on average 105 MFLOPS on the multi thread portion of Linpack but the S4 quad gets 460 MFLOPS on the same test so the real answer is YES it is 2-3 times or more faster. But linpack and quadrant scores don't count in day to day stuff.......at least that's what everyone says.

So I ordered a nexus 4 awhile back and then got a sweet deal on a galaxy nexus. After my nexus 4 came in the mail i played with it awhile and realized the quad core was only really good for gaming, the 2 gigs of ram is good if you use alot of widgets i suppose but i don't. after taking everything into consideration i decided i liked my nexus better. nexus 4 was going for 5 to 600 on craigslist.sold nexus 4 for 550 and bought 1 year of straight talk minutes for nexus.. Point is you earned 250 from this poor sob.
Sweet profit you made there. The Galaxy Nexus is indeed enough for everybody except for people who suffer from the obsessive need to have the latest thing even if the latest thing is not really worth buying over what you already have.
Disregard

Supply and demand . Play Store is out of stock in every country. Don't forget it's Christmas shopping season. If you're going to sell, this is the perfect time. (After the new year, it'll probably settle down again, everyone will be trying to offload the gifts they don't like XD)

Not true. I loved my Galaxy Nexus, but it just started chugging for me. For basic operations, it was fine, but it started to lag here and there. Also, the screen's protective layer started peeling off and it was annoying to scroll or just generally slide my finger on the screen. I thought those were good enough reasons to switch, so I sold my Galaxy Nexus for $250, and paid $170 extra for a lot more horsepower, but I will probably not enjoy the glass back and the non-removable battery.
I think i made out pretty well lol

Sweet deal but it would suck if straight talk cancelled your service for their B-S cap or little to no reason on that 1 year of service.
While the s4 pro is nice and all I would have preferred Google had let samsung make a refreshed galaxy nexus 2 with the exynos 5250 and the 8mp camera out of the s3/note ii.

Exynos is closed source, you won't ever see it in a Nexus.
I wanted to buy Nexus 4, but then I (after quite some time) flashed stock Android and realized how fast actually GNex is. N4 is great and all, but just not enough for me to spend any money. I'll wait for the next year...

Its more open than both the s4 pro and tegra 3. And it is in a nexus device. The nexus 10 which had no problems getting into aosp. The s4 based nexus 4 had trouble with licensing. The exynos is not closed it just took samsung forever to get documentation out for the exynos 4. The exynos 5 is used in a nexus device and will have extensive documentation. Much better than what people will have to deal with on s4 pro. Qualcomm is propably one of the most closed soc makers out there.

Glad you're happy with your choice, but a bit confused about the description.... I've yet to hear of a protective layer on the Galaxy Nexus screen that could peel off, unless you're talking about the plastic film on the screen that you are supposed to remove when unboxing the phone. The glass is a"fortified" glass, similar to gorilla glass, hardened based on composition, heat and pressure. There has been speculation about an oleophobic coating, but that would be a chemical bath if anything, not any kind of peelable layer.... I believe you may be the first to report a peeling galaxy nexus screen...
Regarding your observation that it started to lag... there is nothing in the hardware that would age or degrade and cause lagging. The battery is perhaps the only part that ages with use, and that can be replaced in a minute or two. If you were seeing lag, it was likely due to configuration or an app taking more than its share of resources. Apps link Currents like to do background syncing, and when they do, your only indication that it's happening is a lagging UI in whatever else you're doing. A bit of house cleaning, or even a ROM and/or kernel update could probably have made the device fly again...

IMO that's why the Nexus 4 is not in AOSP and why the Nexus4 may not see full AOSP support, but instead a more hobbled form. It probably wouldn't have an effect now, but down the road it will. The only other Snapdragon Nexus was the Nexus One.

"Only other"? You do realize that makes Qualcomm the most popular chip maker for nexus phones right? 2/4.

Upgrade to Google Nexus 4

Hello,
I've just been given a Samsung Google nexus phone.
I was wondering if it was worth keeping it or simply selling it off and out the money towards a Google Nexus 4.
Is it really that much better?
I imagine it will take some time before it has much development done and ROMs on offer..
On paper it seems clearly much better.
My question is : is it really?

Slap yourself for a number of reasons. Read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1642801 then search XDA or Google if you need more info or opinions.
I've been using the gnex since it came out last year. With the latest paranoid android rom, and Franco kernel, this phone is flying! Both developers are working on the nexus 4,but I'm personally super happy with my gnex. No plans to upgrade.

I'm still thinking about it, but the buildquality is significantly lower than the Gnex.
And in my country their not selling it for the low price of 350$.
People are offering them for 450€ on the web though.
But still an LG built phone for 450!?
Check out Adam Outler's teardown of if, it will give you much insight on the buildquality.

OK, fair enough. I figured it was something from this forum and was searching through the forum threads in vain.
I will spread my wings and reach out the world wide web!

I had the nexus 4 and ended up selling it and keeping the g nex . no removable battery. Battery gets hot. Quad core only benefits gaming really. Sold it bought a year of straight talk minutes and more.. Winning!!

Quad core quickens overall ui, scrolling, booting, app loading and other things(maybe the gpu helps a bit)
I noticed in the gnex/nex4 comparison video theres quite a gap in performance(though the Gnex is pretty fast still)
Though i dont consider the Nexus4 to be that huge of an upgrade to the Gnex, i wouldnt go back to it if i already had the nexus 4

That's right. GPU has its contribution among others in scrolling. I really envy the power of Adreno 225. I wish our PowerVR SGX540 was at least in one third as powerful. I wouldn't trade gn until it dies then.
