My Desire suffers from the following problem: whenever it's connected to AC, it will charge until 100% but then after some arbitrary time period it will discharge quickly to 90% after which it will slowly charge again until it reaches 100%. This can happen two or three times each night. This means that if you take your Desire out at the wrong moment, the battery charge will be at 90% instead of 100% which is EXTREMELY annoying.
I'm thinking that there must be other Desires with this problem, since my previous Desire (which was replaced because of WiFi-problems) exhibited the exact same behaviour. Does anyone else notice this? Or is anyone else willing to check (by means of using Juiceplotter overnight) if his/her Desire suffers from this as well? I just can't believe that the two Desires that I own/have owned are the only ones suffering from this ...
I already contacted HTC Customer Support and they told me that they would pass on this information to another department.
It's common... even I have it.
Whether it's a security or a bug (or both!) is completly unknown at this point I believe.

This has been discussed many times, and the concensus is that it is normal. When battery fully charged, it will stop until it falls below 90% at which point it will charge again.

Ok, good to hear that I'm not the only one. I couldn't find any complaints about this on XDA ...

My HTC Hero did not behave that way, and HTC did not explain to me that it was intended behaviour either.
Also, that would mean that the battery plot is incorrect since it shows rapid discharges from 100% to 90%, such as in the following image:
Furthermore, it seems that this problem (or feature ...?) disappears on at least some devices after rooting.
It seems to happen to me more often than not when I take the phone off the charger each morning. It's annoying but I need the phone on, so charging it to full while turned off each night's not an option.
This is usually done to exercise the battery.
I worked with developing a phone, and we did the same thing, in order for the battery capacity not to degrade because it keeps trickle charging at 100%.
So you shouldn't worry about this.
same happens to me, however i charge it over night and when i get up in the morning uplug and it charges for another 30mins (whilst i get ready for work) and its back up to 100%/99% which i can live with

Hm, my HTC Hero did not have this 'great feature'. I'd rather buy a new battery when this one has degraded too far, instead of having a not fully charged almost 50% of the times that I unplug it.
It would be more acceptable on a phone that would be able to go for at least 48 hours without intermediate charges but clearly, the Desire (just like most smartphones) can't do that.
first, apologise for reviving an old thread.
but it seems that charing by usb (via pc) does not have this problem.
also, charging by ac causes the battery to discharge at a faster rate...
Battery falls to 90% as soon as I unplug the charger
Same problem here, plug the charger before I sleep, at the morning the battery widget indicates 100% and the phone light is green, then I unplug the charger and suddently (really suddently, I mean quite instantly) the charge indicator falls to 89-91%.
Considering the poor duration of a fully charged battery I'd prefer not to lose the 10% of the charge before start using the device.
I'm quite sure this didn't appen with 1.15 stock ROM, I suppose I'd noticed it in case...
I can't remember if this appened after FOTA update from 1.15 to 1.21
With 3.1 modaco ROM I had this problem and now even with 1.23.351.1 Build rooted and A2SD+.
I tryed different radio ROMs without results..
I contacted HTC customer support, they told me to use an app manager like Taskiller to close unneeded applications that drain battery... lol
Obiouvsly they don't know anything about this problem..
Any ideas? It really hurts me to start every day with 90% of the battery!!
Thanks to all!
Hey, I have the same problem since I updated OTA version 1.21, never happened to me before with 1.15. Now when I wake up, I have fully (100%) charged battery, but after a minute or two it instantly jumps to 92%.
Any solutions?
Same here after the last update.

I've just sent a e-mail to the customer support of HTC explaining the problem, as soon as I have an answer I will post it here.
It should be interesting to do a factory reset and test with a recharge without installing any other stuff. Is there anyone who have a standard ROM (not rooted, original kernel) and want to do a try?
While I was writing they answered... They invited me to go to the nearest collection point to test another battery if available.
I'm starting to think the problem is not hardware related if other of our devices started to suffer the problem after the update..
I'll contact them again and we will see what appens.
Meanwhile if someone want to try what I suggested, it would be really apreciated.
Customer Support official answer.
The official answer: Send the device to us for repair. First try with another battery if you want (an if you can find another one...).
I'm not too happy to send my 3 weeks old device to them for 20 days so maybe I'll try to flash the 1.15 or 1.21 official ROM to see how the battery works. If anyone with the same problem wants to try to downgrade, please do it just to help to understand which is the problem.
I am having exactly same problem, i dont think its a battery issue either :/
Is there anyone who rooted and "desire" (wow, what a joke! ) to try a Froyo ROM to see if the problem persists? I suppose it should be totally different from 1.21 or 1.23...
I feel a bit lazy at the moment , I've just done a good setup and I'd like not to redo it again....
Volunteers?

Mine is not rooted. I didnt have this problem before the update.
I have some apps installed and a few widgets but nothing "advanced" like different launcher, heavy widgets. After the update I did a hard reset and didn't even backup my settings (have contacts and e-mail via Exchange server). The hard reset didn't help at all...

So I understand I'll be elect "the" volunteer
Maybe in the next days I'll try...
I used the phone till it automatically switched off, pulled out the battery for one minute, tryed to charge the phone when totally switched off and it charghed and stayed at 100% so I'm quite sure it's a ROM related problem.
You can see the next charge in the attached image (thanks to JuicePlotter)...
Somehow my HTC One X (tegra 3) phone must have bricked itself overnight. It will not turn on and when I connect the charger lead the light does not come on.
Since the phone is still under warranty I take it to Phones 4u, the guy there reckons that it is a battery fault (which makes sense to me, given the circumstances). Anyway that was all last week, today I get a phone call from P4U saying that it's going to cost me £125 to repair it because it is not under warranty. They are claiming that the phone has been opened before and the VOID sticker is damaged as is a load of the shielding tape inside the phone. This came as quite a shock to me since I bought the phone "new" from them last year and it has never been opened in the time that I have had it.
My theory is that the phone has a fault that is going to cost a lot to repair so Phones4U (Would it have been sent to HTC?) have either claimed that the phone has been damaged or they have damaged it so they can thieve some money from me.
Anyway, back to the point, has anyone else had this issue if so does anyone know how to resolve it (or if that's feasible)?

hi there! first of all i want to apologize as my english is not perfect.
now the story, i have this problem for 3 months now. nothing helps to permanently fix this. it started one day, my battery runned out while i was surfing internet, phone switched off as it does normally. i did put in on charger (original) but no charging light came on, i checked it after few hours but no light where there, phone was dead! i didnt worry to much and just left it there over night to charge, but in the morning i found that red light is still not on, not charged and completely dead. i did every method metioned on any forum- holding buttons, pulling sim out combination nothing helped!!!! my HOX is rooted with custom rom and latest HBOOT version. i were so dissapointed that my warranty is void. then i decided to take phone apart, take battery out and measure its voltage with multimeter, so i did that and battery was 3.18v. so i cut USB lead and charged battery up to around 3.8v that was wery tricky to do as HOX's battery have odd connector, after that i did put every thing together and phone turned ON, i did charge it normally to 100% which measures 4.2v in APP. calibrated battery by deleting batterystats.bin file. next day battery went flat, and exactly same thing happened again. it must be something wrong happening when phone swithing off by it self, it does not switching off completely that causing it not reacting to butttons. SO i think if i put in freezer for 10-15min it will kill the battery and cut power to phones PCB (eq = battery pull) because any button combo is not = battery pool. so i wrapped it in cling film to prevent condinsation and kept phone in freezer for 15min. do not attack me with commets like "cold temp killing LI-ion battery for ever" i dont care i dont want to hear any of these stuff i did what knowing that, cuz there is no real solution to this problem! it is sounds like crazy! i know! im am russian so im used to do crazy stuff ) after i took it from freezer my HOX felt like ice.. hooked up charger and WOALIA!!! red light started to blink = battery to low to swith on. after half an hour red light came on persistant and my phone swithed ON without problems. after few weeks i replaced battery with other one but no joy! still same thing, i used to do this for months because sometimes i wasnt able monitor battery and turn phone off manually before it reaches 1% charge. I did not experienced any battery life shortening (at least i didnt spot any serious life drops) I SUSPECT THIS IS SOFTWARE RELATED PROBLEM, SO PLEASE IF ANY DEVELOPER OR ANY ONE WHO IS KNOWS WHAT EXACTLY CAN CAUSE THIS, PLEASE LOOK AT THIS CASE. IT MIGHT BE A SOLUTION OTHER THAN MINE!! cuz in the end it sux putting ur phone to freezer

when u did my methot if it worked for you of coure.. you need APP from Playstore - LLAMA location profiles. in LLAMA app you can create action based on event. se lets make event BATTERY under x% and create action for that - POWER OFF PHONE! set delay for 2min so u can stop ongoing event once u on charger and ur battery is less set %. I did set it for 5% and 2 min delay just to be on safe side. once battery reaches 5% charge action is created after 2 min, and phone turns off. dont try to power it ON!!! if u did by accident, just turn it off once it booted! dont ask me for help using LLAMA it is not complicated as it looks, play aroud with charged battery, experiment. u can add additional actions like play sound + screen on+ vibrate+ power off. if that helped u press thanks button as this text took me whole hour to type
AND PLEASE SOMEONE SORT THIS! AS HTC ONE X' PCB NEED TO BE CUT FROM POWER TO RESET AND START CHARGING. I DO THAT BY DEPLEATING BATTERY CHARGE WHRE PCB CUTS OFF POWER. SUB-ZERO TEMP DOES THAT TO BATTERY, BUT WE NEED REAL SOLUTION!!

I am pleased that I haven't had to do this! I argued with Phones4U a little more and they have agreed to replace the device, I think that the repair job was far too expensive for them to justify doing it. Hopefully will have a shiny new One X (or One X+ if they have no stock) by the end of today!

could you please tell me how did you charge the battery?
My one X surfers from this, if it runs down to zero, it refuses to start, I've found leaving it on charge a few days and booting into the bootloader then doing a restart from there, boots the phone back up. Not great, but it works actually doing it now, it's been dead a few months, and I need a backup phone as I'm about to try cm10.2,4.3 on my note2,so the hox is getting charged.
I always suspected clockwork mod as I have a similar issue, with my note2, if my note runs to zero, the charger light doesn't show, but Does charge as once booted light returns and percent shows. Also my note won't boot with the power button alone, I have to bootloader then restart. That why I thought it was a clockwork issue, bit the above poster was on stock.
Anyhow is there any updates to this thread or anyone know of a solution?
i've sent the device to htc maintenance and they told me that i have to replace the board for 270$ !
POWER button and VOLUMES button all down at once did it for me!!!!!! It works
Hey Guys!!!!!!!! Freezer for 10-15mins? Not for me thanks. For days my phone won't charge or power on. So i went for the hard reset/reboot method ( POWER button and VOLUMES button all down at once) did it for me. When you reach the Reset/Reboot mode be very careful not to choose Factory Reset mode because you will erase everything out of your phone. Choose the reboot mode and the phone should restart. And when my phone started again it was 80% charged. Just can't work out why it went dead. But hey it's alive and kicking now. Remember ( POWER button and VOLUMES button all down at once) did it for me!!!!!! It works
Hi guys, I'm experiencing some power issue with my ZL. I have recently updated via Seus to .283 firmware....once I reboot, it gets to the Sony screen and then it shuts down. If the phone is plugged in it boots fine and remains on. The battery charge shows 80%. Afterwards I unlocked the bootloader and flashed the KK advanced kernel to see the battery percentage in recovery and it also shows 80%. Is there anyway to check if its the battery without replacing it?

There is a battery testing app for Sony devices (you can find it here), but, obviously, it requires your phone to be able to stay on battery power for the time of the testing...
What happens with your phone if you unplug the charger once fully booted? Does it immediately shut down, or is only happening during startup?
The phone shuts down immediately after I remove the usb cord. Offline charging looks as though it's working. I'll see what the app says, thank you.
* btw the phone stays on when in recovery which is odd
* the battery app requires you to remove power which I cannot do
* help me!..using a Z Ultra at the moment...things huge!

Well, yeah, that's what I meant saying the phone has to be able to stay on battery...
I think (just an uneducated guess ) that the recovery doesn't have a mechanism to analyze battery health/status, but the Android OS does (and so does the bootloader). That's why it stays on in recovery, but when booted (or in the process of booting) into the OS, the system somehow thinks that the battery level is too low, and shuts down as a safety measure. I have seen multiple times that the battery levels shown in recovery and in Android are drastically different, which kinda confirms my thoughts...
All in all, it looks to me like your battery is acting up. Just to save you an effort and expense of getting a new battery, at least until you know for sure the battery is the problem, I can suggest something to you... I am expecting a replacement for my battery in a day or two. My old (current) battery still works, it's just old and doesn't last very long, that's why I am replacing it. I could send the old one to you (Vancouver to Winnipeg is not a big deal), so you can try it out to pinpoint the problem. If it works, then you know it's the battery, and you can either buy a new one, or keep my old one for the time being. If you are OK with the idea, just send me a PM with the address to send it to.
I think I'm just going to buy a battery of ebay. I really appreciate your offer to send me your old battery, but its probably best I go new since I don't want this issue arising again. Thanks again for all your help.

No problem! I was just thinking you could use my battery to confirm the problem before buying the new one, not to keep it for the long term, of course (that would be silly). But I am pretty sure it's the battery, anyway... Good luck!
I was wondering if the battery ever fixed the problem, I am having the same issue
really mad, I'm going on a business trip and this started happening. this week I updated the firmware to 293.
I didn't know you could replace the ZL battery.
After 2 years of use, my phone suddenly just died when I was playing a game. It won't boot without the charger ever since. I'm so sad because I expected this phone to last longer
Hey Guys,
My wife and I both have a Sprint Note 4. She runs hers stock and I am always looking for the next ROM. Currently I'm running the newest Hybrid X 3 rom. I'm posting this here because I don't think it's ROM specific. I've had this problem with other ROMs too and I'm curious if anyone else has...
Our phones will just die at 20% like they're dead. And my phone just did it at 35%. Not sure what is going on..
If anyone has ideas, let me know. I do need to run a battery calibration tool, but I've read other places that they don't work.
Thanks,
PhotoshopGeek

My phone has done that too a few times. I'm on stock rooted KitKat and sometimes it will die between 6 and 10% so it could be a calibration issue. let me know if the app you try works and the name of it. Thanks
I've probably done this without thinking much about it. I had installed Xposed and disabled the low battery warnings and totally ran it to power down. Knowing that Sammy used to use a panic rob of ~20%, I charged fully with phone off and then powered up. I believe at step 3, you should leave the charger plugged while powering on. I'm not sure but it seems the old calibration data will be applied if you remove charger before booting.

If that doesn't work, try the OP of Noterized or OBAR.
Edit: The 2 run to 0% shutdowns were done on OB7. I've ran OG5 down to 5% with no issue so far. Still running original battery since day one and get max 10.5 hours SOT.

Its an issue with the new ROM. I too get this all the time. My cousin also gets this on his Tmobile Note 4.
I spoke to a Sprint Rep who also stated he has the same issue with his Note 4.
Yes same here, fully stock.

That's just odd to me. I've been running rooted stock Odex from tx_dbs_tx OB7 to OG5 tar ball. Still using the OB7 bootloader and I've been running the battery capacity down to 5% before charging without any false shutdowns that suggest it's actually 0% prior to charging.
Phone has been running fine. Only a couple of odd issues to report is the messaging app shutdown without explanation or notification while I was composing a text message; went black screen and came back to home screen. I thought it may have been some settings? Yesterday, I tried to update Milk Music and got a -505 error from Google Play. I had to remove Milk Music from the system and data directories and download from Play to get the update; clearing the app's data & cache or uninstalling the previous update and rebooting made no difference. Prior to that the app always launched but on a couple of occasions inexplicably wouldn't start playing music after pressing play a few times; never showed a pause icon, just flashed play icon each press but no music. Appears to be stable despite that; phone and Milk Music was ready, willing and able this morning for a brief workout with V4A and Dolby Atmos to pump up the beats.
I've gotten as much as 10+ SOT rooted with Beastmode kernel on this build; pics posted in freeza's Beastmode kernel 5.1 hello root thread. Fully functional AFAIK, now. No freezes, shutdowns or reboots.
Here's a thought. If the simple fix I posted earlier does nothing, backup and wipe everything but the ExtSdCard and format the data partition a few times. Select reboot to power off and pull battery for 30 seconds. Reflash the stock tar or the other tar ball if actually using OB7 bootloader in Odin and let phone boot normally with auto reboot enabled. You should see the stock recovery open briefly to update the csc files and boot. Once it boots, don't get in such a hurry to go through the setup wizard because the phone will interrupt you saying it needs to reboot to complete installation. Reboot and run the setup wizard.
For rooted users, I'd recommend doing the above steps before root or flashing custom files in Odin or TWRP. For non rooted users, simply flashing the stock tar with Odin or KIES wouldn't void warranty or trip Knox counter. Do the factory reset first and make sure the Reactivation lock is disabled. There's also a Knox active protection setting in Settings/Security that can enabled to protect and root if lost; disable that prior to factory reset and power down prior Odin or KIES tar as well.

I've had this happen to me a few times in the last 2 weeks suddenly out of no where and at varying battery percentages. It's happened at 20%, 12%, 10%, 5% to name a few.
I am completely on the latest 5.1.1 and am not rooted. It's really annoying. Wonder if the batteries are beginning to cut out, maybe defective. I've had my Note 4 since it hit the stores.
I'm seriously thinking about contacting Samsung to file a warranty claim.
I had the same problem
My phone would die really quick ones it reaches 20%
I bought a new battery and problem solve

Mine did that a time or two and of course at the least opportune times
My old battery would drop from 30% to 0% within seconds. I took it to the sprint store and have them tested. Sure enough, there are issues with the battery. After getting a new battery, problem solved.
P.S. The Sprint rep told me I shouldn't leave the phone plugged-in when I go to bed.
Well either purchase new battery or just try to calibrate It like older times. May be calibrating it give you desired results...

Contacted Samsung and was told to boot into safemode and run the phone without 3rd party apps loaded to see if it still did it. I was aggravated naturally because I need my apps. Well I did it and sure enough, the phone behaved properly, did not shut down unexpectedly. Now I'm really mad. I still think it's the battery but it was hard to prove that with safemode not replicating the issue. Can some of you try it and let me know your results. Thanks.
Freddie: Below are the instructions for Safe Mode.
Freddie: 1. Power the device off (remove and re-insert the battery after 30 seconds).
Freddie: 2. Press and hold the Volume down key, then press and hold the Power key.
Freddie: 3. When the first boot screen displays; release only the Power key.
Freddie: 4. Keep pressing the Volume down key until the device boots up completely
Freddie: 5. If successful, Safe Mode will appear on the device screen in the bottom left corner.
Was having the same issue, from 30% it would go down to 5% in an instant, or at 25% it would just die and reboot. Replaced the battery with an anker battery off of amazon for $12 or so, battery has worked perfectly since then.
I just bought two batteries off Amazon, but has anyone had success getting a warranty claim validated through Samsung and actually get a new battery without hassle. I would love to have two new stock batteries as my wife's and mine are doing the same thing.

Not yet, I just bought a new battery from BestBuy yesterday and got them to price match Amazon. Hoping I see a difference with the new battery and then will go back to Samsung and let them know that fixed it and maybe convince them to replace it under warranty.
I just can't stand that they want me to factory reset and not install any apps to make sure it's the battery. Maybe I can send in the bad one and have them test the battery. That might work.
My phone just started doing this within the last week or so. My phone is only 11 months old too. Yeah guys, let's seal the battery up so nobody can change it on their own #note5. Another service they can charge $$ for. So it looks like the go to solution is a new battery? Sprint is selling a wall charger w/battery right now for $25, pretty good deal. I am going to try calibration too but am not confident it will help after what I'm reading here.
At least I won't spend much more time trying to 'fix' it. Thanks for the thread!
So, after a little while with the new battery and actually using both because, hey, it's nice having 2 batteries it happened again on the old battery. I actually wiped my phone yesterday and so it's definitely the battery.
Contacted Samsung again today and reference my previous chat. Agent was very quick to give me an RMA for the battery and upon request, even sent me a UPS return label.
Moral of the story, be persistent and they will replace the battery.
Well my battery has started showing failure after 14 months. Last week I rebooted my phone at 15% and it failed to boot; went black. Plugged the charger in and it said 0% charging. Ordered another battery. Deleted the /data/system battery bin stats, charged to full and verified in off condition that it's fully charged.
Still waiting on the replacement battery; delayed due to bad weather... started a benchmark at 26%, today, and the phone shutdown before I returned to check results. Plugged the charger again and again it says 0%. LOL.
Samsung makes a good battery but my experience with them has been the lying% indicator worsening with age. For me, that circuit seems to go before the battery usability goes. I was still getting 5+ hours SOT with heavy use before the % error started. I get more 8 or more SOT if just browsing the web and tapatalk. I'm running stock rooted and have mostly ran just that. Battery is original and I haven't had a backup until ordered. The same battery once got up to 10.5 hours SOT back in KitKat do it has degraded over time.
Not replacing with a Samsung battery. Sorry Samsung. Just unplugged charger with charge showing at 85% and battery % jumped to 100% (the note 8 tends to do this also, even before rooting it). Been using it awhile since unplugging and it's still at 94%. It doesn't drop fast; it just lies and has died twice now near the 20% remaining. Last set of third party batteries I purchased didn't do this and didn't drop 10% on a reboot either. Samsung % seems to get a little dishonest post 50% when rebooting. It's a good thing I've charged to 100% before flashing in recovery or Odin lately. This doesn't leave me feeling warm and fuzzy about buying a phone or tablet with non user replaceable battery, Samsung! However, I'm thrilled I can pull and play a $12 replacement battery in a jiffy on this Note 4!
