Hi guys, I'm experiencing some power issue with my ZL. I have recently updated via Seus to .283 firmware....once I reboot, it gets to the Sony screen and then it shuts down. If the phone is plugged in it boots fine and remains on. The battery charge shows 80%. Afterwards I unlocked the bootloader and flashed the KK advanced kernel to see the battery percentage in recovery and it also shows 80%. Is there anyway to check if its the battery without replacing it?

There is a battery testing app for Sony devices (you can find it here), but, obviously, it requires your phone to be able to stay on battery power for the time of the testing...
What happens with your phone if you unplug the charger once fully booted? Does it immediately shut down, or is only happening during startup?
The phone shuts down immediately after I remove the usb cord. Offline charging looks as though it's working. I'll see what the app says, thank you.
* btw the phone stays on when in recovery which is odd
* the battery app requires you to remove power which I cannot do
* help me!..using a Z Ultra at the moment...things huge!

Well, yeah, that's what I meant saying the phone has to be able to stay on battery...
I think (just an uneducated guess ) that the recovery doesn't have a mechanism to analyze battery health/status, but the Android OS does (and so does the bootloader). That's why it stays on in recovery, but when booted (or in the process of booting) into the OS, the system somehow thinks that the battery level is too low, and shuts down as a safety measure. I have seen multiple times that the battery levels shown in recovery and in Android are drastically different, which kinda confirms my thoughts...
All in all, it looks to me like your battery is acting up. Just to save you an effort and expense of getting a new battery, at least until you know for sure the battery is the problem, I can suggest something to you... I am expecting a replacement for my battery in a day or two. My old (current) battery still works, it's just old and doesn't last very long, that's why I am replacing it. I could send the old one to you (Vancouver to Winnipeg is not a big deal), so you can try it out to pinpoint the problem. If it works, then you know it's the battery, and you can either buy a new one, or keep my old one for the time being. If you are OK with the idea, just send me a PM with the address to send it to.
I think I'm just going to buy a battery of ebay. I really appreciate your offer to send me your old battery, but its probably best I go new since I don't want this issue arising again. Thanks again for all your help.

No problem! I was just thinking you could use my battery to confirm the problem before buying the new one, not to keep it for the long term, of course (that would be silly). But I am pretty sure it's the battery, anyway... Good luck!
I was wondering if the battery ever fixed the problem, I am having the same issue
really mad, I'm going on a business trip and this started happening. this week I updated the firmware to 293.
I didn't know you could replace the ZL battery.
After 2 years of use, my phone suddenly just died when I was playing a game. It won't boot without the charger ever since. I'm so sad because I expected this phone to last longer

Is there a way to change the kernel or a script or whatever to get the phone to boot automatically as soon as a power source is connected?
I'm going to use a phone as a media device (will be in a closed box so nobody can fiddle with it, with continues power connected), but it will be stupid for me to go to the site to turn it on if the main power has failed and the battery has run empty. I would like the phone to turn on automatically as soon as the main power is restored!
Any help will be appreciated!
default behaviour already.
not on my hero? or is it only when the battery goes totally flat?
well firstly with these types of batteries you don't want to make a common thing about running them down to 0% its not good for the life of the battery.
and secondly I agree, afaik my phone does not auto boot when power is in place maybe that poster got confused between booting (from power off) and the screen turning on from sleep.
As the phone is turned off I don't think it will be possible to create something to make it auto turn on.
Thanks for the replies!
The device will be connected to a power source continuously and will probably never go flat. I just need a way to power it up in case something happens and the device go flat!

I honestly don't think this is possible, since the SPL is the only thing with control of the phone at this point. If the SPL does it, then you're fine. Otherwise you can't
Thanks
Thanks for all the replies guys! I guess i'm screwed then!
Just another observation! When the phone is plugged in to a power source, and the battery is removed and then replaced, the phone starts by itself! Any ideas why?
No, no screwed...

You are, maybe, if you only think along software lines for a solution. There was a world of invention before software.... but you probably won't remember.
How about considering a mechanical switch operated only when the power is first connected. Something along the lines of a cam that bears against the on switch. The cam could be profiled to give a continuous press for a few seconds as it turns. After one full revolution the cam switches its driving motor off until power is removed and restored again. One-off wipes of windscreen wipers come to mind as an example.
Or,if you like electronics, how about a 555 timer IC (do they still exist?) and look up an electronic one shot circuit in a cookbook. You could parallel wire to the phone switch or you could use an electo-mechanical actuator.
Not bad!
Not a bad idea, but this would be my last resort, as I plan on at least 500 units, it will take to long to modify them all. And I do like electronics, I'm actually an electronic engineer, but switched to pure programming a couple of months back! And yes you do still get 555 timers.
This isn't even possible that easy because the phone won't turn on if the battery is below ~2 %..
Big time beckons...

Well if that's for real I would approach HTC; give them your problem and ask for a special to be manufactured.
Then when you're in the Dragons Den just tell them Croques sent you.
Have you looked at all the 7" slates from china retailing at £65 and up - they are WiFi but you could dongle them if needed. Or do you specifically need the phone application? They have terrible battery life - 2hrs reported - so mains is the only way for them.
Yer... but no... bt yer

I'm not sure as I follow this; but since its SNAFU here most of the time it's not unusual.
In operation, with the phone permanently connected to mains, the battery will remain at full charge. If the power is removed the battery will discharge until critical - and then switch itself off. The battery will thus be protected from going less than 2% won't it?
I need to be connected to the GSM network! The media must be transfered to the device over the network! Wifi is not an option! Do you really think they'll make it custom if I take 500? I think 500 is pocket change for them!!!

I have no idea; nor do you; so ask! Your 500 units could be the start of something big... I have no idea what you are up to... but more importantly neither would HTC - you could say 500 units were for market trials with a potential large order to follow if the trial is successful.
Nothing ventured nothing gained; remember the 'glass is half-empty' only if you let it be!
(I'm on to life coaching now and people pay money for this!)

Battery drained. It does start when power button is pressed after reapplying power! I assume if it is left drained for a while it will need some time to recover before it will boot. But it's easy enough to put a longer delay on the "button pusher"!

That's unfortunate considering these phones without a charge during the day quite often be drained completely while I'm out of the house.
Saying that though on FroydVillain + Cyanogen6.0 (Froyo), I've noticed my battery life is substantially better, and has been for days now. I'm not sure how thats even possible, but I've got home three days in a row after about 12 hours off charge and the batter is still showing >50% charge.
and what about an "hacked" SPL to boot when connected to power?
Hello, I've been having this issue before but I always managed to start the charging process after few tries with battery calibration (power + volume up and down for 2 minutes).
But since yesterday I'm unable to start charging and I've spent hours trying to fix it. It just blinks red few times, then turns off for a short while, then again starts blinking and repeats.
I've followed the guide at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1658084 but it didn't solve the issue. It's not charging fast enough to get to fastboot via USB 3.0, and while it does work when you charge it from the wall it still doesn't stay in fastboot for longer than 5 or so seconds. I can't even get to recovery.
The thing is, my phone won't charge ONLY when it turns off due to low battery (which happens often since One X has a really crappy battery and I use it heavily at work). Normally it charges just fine.
I've started having issues after I accidentally got it wet, although it worked for a couple of months after the incident.
I am planning to buy a new phone as soon as I can get my hands on either Note 3, G2 or Z1, but for now I'd like to fix it since it will be weeks before I can get a new phone and I could give this to my sister.
Perhaps a new battery would solve the issue? I'm a bit scared to replace a non-replacable battery.
I don't care about warranty, it's already expired according to my carrier (6 month warranty on battery while the phone has 2 years warranty, but it has a non-replacable battery and opening it would void the 2 year warranty - where's the logic in that?).
Anyway, any suggestions on how to make the damn thing charge for now without making any hardware changes to it? I just need like 4-5% so I can boot it and leave it charging from there. In case someone asks, I tried different chargers.
There are no significant problems with the battery of the X. Maybe it's a little too small for the screen and its posibilities, so it could drain a little fast, but then again it's a nice sleek device.
It's probably because you got it wet... It takes a while before corrosion starts.
The method you mention should charge the battery, but you have to leave it rebooting for at least half a day. Maybe longer.

Well the problem is I can't use that method because the battery is empty and I can't keep it in bootloader.
Would a new battery help or is the phone completely screwed up?
That was happen after upgrading to 4.2.2./Sense5? or was suddenly with another Rom?

So you say you are too short in bootloader to start the script, cause the script causes also reboots, that's necessary to charge, cause in bootloader the phone doesn't charge, only in the small time of going off and on again. So if you manage to start the script in the period of entering bootloader, it might work.
Good luck!

No it happened after the phone ran out of juice. I wasn't upgrading anything. I've had the same custom rom for like a half year or so (Mike's).
These issues started happening after I got it wet. But before I was able to charge it after recalibrating battery a few times.
It refuses to charge only when the phone is off or in bootloader.

I can't. I can get it to bootloader for like 5-7 seconds only when it's charged from the wall.
When it's connected to USB 3.0 it won't run at all.

Have you tried another PC with USB 2.0 port?
And with the phone at the wall charger, you could reboot before the 5-7 seconds are over, so it charges a little during reboot, and slowly gain some extra power to get the script running.
Otherwise you could try a repair center.

I will buy a One X+ battery and hope that will solve the problem.
My phone won't boot unless it is plugged in via wall charger.
If I got it to boot while charging, it instantly turns off when I unplug it even with battery at 100%.
I am able turn to go into hboot mode(power + volume down), even when it is unplugged. But it dies if I access recovery. I am able to perform "show image crc" function.
The problem started while I was using the camera and it just turned off by itself.
I was on SROM at the time when the problem started.
I managed to change ROM to SD, and even used lollipop RUU(verizon), but the problem wasn't resolved.:crying:
What do you think? Am I right to assume this is a hardware problem?

Bump. I have the same problem too. Seems to have come out of the blue for an otherwise functional phone. Can't figure it out.
I'll add that I can get into twrp and it seems to function without the charger plugged.. But otherwise, if the charger is removed, phone dies like OP.
Anyone can help?

Try to flash a RUU and if you got the same it should be an hardware problem...

Did you resolve the issue. I heard it could be the battery failing, but i'm not so sure anymore, because when i run antutu benchmark my phone shuts down when using fisheye image processing or 3D, it turns off even when it's plugged in.
I suspect it's the GPU failing or something similar. That is weird since i wasn't using any intense 3D games. I'm sure this is my last HTC.

Hey Gunman84, my phone is behaving in a similar fashion as the OP. I have an AT&T phone converted to a GPE. So everything is stock in that sense. If plugged in, phone operates normally. As soon as I unplug it, a couple of seconds later it will power off. If I boot into hboot, the phone will stay on for a long time (its been an hour+ already and its still on).
I watched a youtube video showing how to replace the battery and that was pretty intimidating - haha. Where did you get your battery replacement? and how much did it cost?
thanks

Hi, it's not so intimidating . Well you just need to be careful and patient, there are lots of small resistors, connectors and so on. Check the iFixit site for proper instructions here is the link https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/HTC+One+%28M8%29+Teardown/23615 this is full teardown, and here is 2nd link where they focus mainly on replacing the battery https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/HTC+One+M8+Battery+Replacement/41650. I'm from Slovenia, and the battery cost me 20€, which is around 25US dollars, the battery was original one. I bought it from local supplier. It took me around 2-3 hours to replace it, or something like that, that's because i wanted to be careful.

Thanks so much for the links.
The phones behavior really makes me question if its the battery. For example, it stayed on in the hboot/recovery screen for 10+ hours (without being plugged in). So the battery can definitely hold a charge.
I'm afraid to open up the phone (and potentially break it), when there is potentially something else going on (maybe a software issue). I guess if I run out of ideas, I'll have no choice but to attempt the battery replacement.
thanks again!

Well in my case i could also stay in recovery mode(TWRP) indefinitely also in bootloader mode, that's because you are not in the operating system. The graphics are not running at that point and so on, it doesn't drain that much power at that point either.. It's a different story if you try to flash a rom in aroma, at that point the phone shuts of if not plugged in. It is the battery, trust me.

Nope, no additional adhesive was needed in my case. I used the hair dryer to soften the original adhesive. The speaker grills were difficult to remove as they are glued quite well, but eventually they came off. The toughest part was separating the back casing, as you do need quite a few prying picks or guitar picks.
Just be careful with the motherboard, slowly remove the tape that covers the connectors, you don't want to rip apart any flat cables. And don't throw away that tape, you will need it.

Well if yours symptoms are the same as clemdaddy has, then yes. Sorry, but at least now you know what the problem is.
Got the new battery today and performed the phone surgery. All the connections looked good. Pieced it all back together and everything works BUT the new battery won't charge. The phone is running off the battery, so the connections I made must be correct. Running off the battery the phone no longer exhibits the symptoms I described above (so this most likely confirms my previous battery was the culprit). I tried the hold all buttons for 2 minutes to re-calibrate the new battery. All that did was made the phone now display a full battery (instead of the empty battery it initially showed).
On the weekend I'll open it up again and see if I missed something.
Got the replacement battery. Re-opened up the phone. This time I over heated the upper and lower panels which caused them both to warp a bit, and one of them to have its paint bubble :crying: :crying: :crying: :crying:
I replaced the new defective battery with the most recent one. Put the phone back together and it is back to normal again! Also probably because of the over heating, there is now a little bit of a rainbow effect on the lower part of the LCD screen!
A real pity the first battery was defective, causing me to have to re-open it and carelessly overheat it. Otherwise the 1st attempt would have been a flawless repair!
With the warped panels, the bubbling paint and now the rainbow effect on the screen, I wonder how long I'll keep the phone. These little things are definitely bugging me... If I get rid of it, I'll really miss my google edition htc one m8! Nothing like a nexus like experience with a remove-able microSD card. Such a thing no longer exists
Hi all,
I have been running my Z1 Compact on 4.4.4 for the longest time, mainly due to sound issues after updating to Lollipop.
Recently, the battery has been dropping randomly from 60 odd percent to 3 or 4 and then shutting down all within a few seconds. The last time it did this, I tried charging it when I got home but the charging light would not stay on, thus it was not charging. All typical signs of battery failure due to age.
Having already replaced the battery successfully on my Z1, I bought a replacement original Sony battery and replaced it. The problem persisted. On first boot, the phone got to the blue waves then black screen, and power off. Charging screen just showed the battery at about 40%.
I risked it and flashed the latest software with Flashtool, having done a complete wipe. The result of this proved no better, but I did get a different message on the charging screen, a message saying the phone had shut down due to overheating. Picture is attached.
The phone is in no way overheating and I've even booted it while sat on a shelf in the fridge to help dissipate any heat generated but with no luck.
So, the old battery maybe did overheat and caused the phone to shut down, I'll accept that as a probability. It may have even damaged something, but I don't think that's likely.
After changing the battery, I would have expected the problem to resolve itself, but it seems like some kind of hardware 'flag' has been raised that is now not allowing the phone to boot in case it overheats again.
Does anyone know of any way to resolve this, reset the 'flag' per se, other than going to Sony? The phone is definitely out of warranty due to its age, never mind me taking the back off lol
It is a shame because it has been a great phone over the years, and I would like to fix it if possible, even if to give it to one of the grandkids. I have my Z3 still (which I won't part with for anything) and I have an XZ too and both are great phones. I would just like to save the XZ1c if I can.
The phone is not, and has never been modified in any way, no rooting, no bootloader unlocking. Only stock roms have ever been flashed, and then only once or twice, to put it back on 4.4.4.
I have tried reflashing just the kernel, or just the system too, to no avail.
In desperation I even left it in the fridge for a few hours in case the temperature sensor was on the fritz, but that did nothing at all.
I just feel like there's nothing actually wrong with the phone, apart from this trigger that won't reset.
Any help greatly appreciated of course.
Thanks,
Mick
Maybe theres lot of consideration:
1. Rom Bugs
2. The Kernel not supported well
3. Battery Issues (But you already change it right)
There are two temperature sensors afaikin our phone. One in the SOC and another one in the battery (hence three pins).
The battery is probably the one giving the high temp report. Try yet another battery.
A bad battery normally heats up very fast inside and the battery temp sensor stops the battery from charging and/or working to protect the phone and the battery.
I changed my battery before when it had symptoms like yours 100-90-0 drop and after replacing with a battery from eBay it was OK. I gave it a full charge then complete discharge and then complete charge to full cycle the battery once and let the phone Guage its full capacity. one year later now my battery is acting funny again (not charging past 30%) and getting so hot when charging it triggers overheat control service in Android.
Any luck?
Apologies for the necro. But did you ever fix this issue, having the same problem

No, I never did figure it out. I've been loathe to spend more money on another battery when I've got other much newer phones. I really have no idea why it would not reset once the battery was replaced, maybe it's the replacement battery.
Have you tried changing the battery?
I've tried flashing different stock roms, Kit Kat, Lollipop, and it doesn't help.
Short of going to Sony, I'm not sure what else to do.
I know. I've seen the threads for battery drain and such, but I don't think there's a problem with "drain" so much, as perhaps a bad battery altogether.
I'm using my old M8 for my daughter, but after RUU, and setting up latest TWRP and all, then trying to install a custom ROM whether Stock or AOSP, when I boot into recovery, it goes from 100% within the ROM, to show 80% in recovery.
If off the charger, there does appear to have some battery drain, but I chalk that up to normal first usage.
However, it then shuts off @ 30%, but when I put it on the charger, it says @ 60%.
I've done the calibration method (hold all buttons for 2 minutes) trick, but there appears to be no help for the erratic battery readings.
Does anyone know if my suspicion is correct?
I'm on Sprint's last RUU.

Ive seen so many posts now that refer to the exact thing you mention. Phones turning off at 20-30%. Its claimed that this is due to a faulty battery and a replacement has fixed it. I do not have this problem, however, I did get a replacement 12 months ago.
That's what I'm afraid of.
Did you replace it yourself, or have a tech do it?

I replaced mine just Yesterday, with both speakers, chraging portero AND buttons, its not that hard AND not easy, you Will nerd a razor blade, AND see a few videos first, one thing to have in mind Is that i put a m9 battery on my m8, AND the phone works, but the phone doesnt recognize the aditional 240mamps,. AND the battery temp always shows 25C, but besides that everything is ok, waiting for the battery yo settle.
