Yes before you flash make a nandroid backup in ClockworkMod recovery. If you don't like aokp (highly doubt you'll have this issue) just boot back to recovery and restore nandroid.
EDIT make sure and grab darkside superwipe and cachewipe first. Use these instead of cwm's wipe functions. Superwipe before rom flash cachewipe after any flash. It will save you from a lot of bugs.

If you're asking this i suggest you read ALL the stickies before you do anything. I've been seeing a higher than normal of threads complaining of phones getting bricked which means people arent following directions.
You're asking a very basic question that can be answered by reading the stickies.

So let me try and get this right...I'm on fd26 stock rooted in order to flash a new ROM all I have to do is flash a GB kernel and not go back to GB fully, and if I wanna flash just a theme then I just use el29 kernel also is this correct? If not what are the steps I take to flash a new ics ROM from stock rooted fd26??? Thank You in advance!!!

You have to flash the el26 CWM kernel (if you're on an ICS rom it won't boot because it's a GB kernel) then boot into recovery and you can flash stuff that way. If you do a theme, be sure to flash an ICS kernel after flashing the theme so it will boot normal again. Roms have kernels in them already so you don't have to worry about them.
Here's the el26 cwm kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25017238

Honestly what you have to do is read the OP fully and do whatever is asked of you in there to make sure your phone is upgraded properly. Making new threads asking questions that may give you multiple answers may only confuse you further. I assume if you have to still ask this question with the amount of how to not brick and safe way to flash threads then you are still a little confused.
Best way to not have a paperweight is to follow whatever the OP's thread info to the letter. what rom you trying to flash
Jus' Sayin'
Yeah all I have done is went from stock to stock rooted and I have stayed stock rooted that's easy for me using the PC version of odin. I just wanted to start flashing new roms I have read all the posts and realize how not to brick I was simply wanting to know what would be the easiest way to go from stock rooted fd26 to like blazer ROM our mijjaz the goodness as I have not flashed using cwm recovery before...

Hello!
If there is a thread for this already this can be deleted and I would like to be shown the link, but from what I can tell most threads are old info or a bit misleading.
So right now I'm running an ICS ROM. I hadn't looked into the fact that going from ICS to a new ICS ROM back brick the phone, so I looked a bit more into it. From what I gathered, using a recovery on and ICS rom to install a new ICS ROM has a CHANCE to brick the phone?
If this is true, what is the easiest way to go from one rom to another? For my recent ROM I used the guide where I use odin mode to install the stock GB ROM then use another tool to get CWM on my phone then use THAT to install the ROM.
So my main question, is, is that the easiest way to go about changing between ICS roms? Can mobile ODIN be used more effectively? If that's what I have to do that's what I have to do....but I feel like there should be an easier way....hopefully.
Thank you all and thank you devs for all of your hard work!
There's an el26 + cwm kernel our there. I know you can get it from several threads to include the Frankenstein rom. All you need to do is mobile Odin that flash and as long as what rom you flash has an ics kernel you are good to go. No need for multiple flashes and odins

Ya mobile Odin makes it ez. Flash a non-stock recovery kernel prefferably the el26 cwm on mobile Odin then in cwm use calkulins wipe all zip then flash rom of choice

Hi all,
This has probably been answered a few hundred times, but I really want to be 100% sure I don't brick my phone. Today I got the new FF18 update and then rooted it and put CWM+Agat on it using QBKing77's awesome videos.
My understanding is that I can now flash between ROM's in CWM just like I used to do in Gingerbread and not worry about bricking it. That is, assuming I don't use a "TW" ROM (not sure exactly what that is) like AOKP or CM. Is that true?
If I want to flash Blazer ICS onto my phone, I can just copy it onto the SD card and install it from recovery? Or do I still have to do the whole EL26 thing?
Only other question I have: if I want to put Calkulin's ICS ROM on my phone but still use FF18, how would I do that? I love his GB ROM and used it for months with no issues.
Thanks in advance.
Yes you can flash roms with the safe kernel. Just make sure that you flash the safe kernel back on if the Rom erases it before you flash something else. On the calk question you would flash his from then the safe kernel if I understood you correctly.

Hey guys quick question..
A friend brought over his SGS2 cause he wants Jellybean but he is still on Gingerbread, Im 75% sure you cant go straight to JB from GB, if thats true, do I have to flash stock ICS or any ICS rom before getting to JB?
There is no reason you can't go straight to JB. It's just flashing another ROM.

Yep, found an older thread saying the same after some more searching right after posting this thread.

Make sure you update the radio to something compatible to ics/jb first.....I do think that matters....

Whenever I upgrade from GB to JB I flash an ICS AOSP-based ROM first just to be on the safe side.

Won't doing a clean flash negate the importance of the ROM that was previously flashed? I have confidence in TWRP when I wipe data, cache and system, that in fact it does so

I also use TWRP and I trust it completely. I just like upgrading one version at a time.
Sorry for the bump fellas but this saves me from making a new thread:
I currently have a GB Rom (revenge of macnut) and would like to update my phone since it is over due. I love the Rom I currently have but little glitches have been causing it to lock up.
If I wanted to go to a JB rom, would I need to go to a stock rom first or not? Wasn't sure if I needed to put on a stock Jb rom or if I can go right into a rom with a clean wipe.
Thank you for any replies!

As long as you have the proper radio, you can flash directly to whatever you want. You MUST fully wipe of course.

you know it's been a while when I have to ask what a radio is? I haven't found a good FAQ yet but once I find the rom I want I'm sure the proper radio is recommended as well. is it like klies or cwm?
anyone have a link to a good how to for this install with radio and rom included.
Hello all, I have a question for you. I have a sprint epic 4g touch with the GB27 kernal. I want to flash a custom ROM though. I am rooted, with only the stock recovery. my question is how can i flas ha custom rom on the gb27 kernal. and which rom should I flash?

This will explain the process and as for a custom rom, I'd suggest that you look at a few and pick one that looks interesting to try; there are several excellent roms available for the E4GT.
mobile odin...in playstore or there is a free apk floating around on xda..once this is installed go grab a gb27 kernal withagats recovery from repository..and grab the el 29 direct boot kernal...el29 is safe to flash any rom from...download rom of choice..make sure this is all on ur root of sdcard...open mobile odin.click on kernal.go to ur el29 kernal and pick it and flash..odin will check md5,but u should too..once in recovery hit volume down , volume up , volume down..now ur power button is enabled as ur enter button..wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache,in advanced....do anything specif from rom op that the dev says...read,read,read....lol..rom should have a kernal with it...u might have to flash gapps zip....reboot....if this is ur first time on jb...i suggest getting a one-click restore so ur system partition is right for jb...there r great guides in repository for all of this...dont forget to thank ur rom dev and rwillco and any others that helped....good luck and as always...im not responsible if ur phone blows up or ur microwave runs away...lol
I found an install method for cm 10.1 and ClockworkMod recovery. I need to be on ICS. I am on rooted GB27. How do I flash down?

You need to be on ICS modem, which can be flashed in cwm after you flash your ROM.

Now, where do I find an ICS modem? And after I flash the safe kernal should I flash the ICS Modem with CWM and then CM 10.1 Or does it not matter?

Google is your friend . Here's all modems for the E4GT. And flash the ROM first, then the modem, then reboot, and profit!
