Hello!
If there is a thread for this already this can be deleted and I would like to be shown the link, but from what I can tell most threads are old info or a bit misleading.
So right now I'm running an ICS ROM. I hadn't looked into the fact that going from ICS to a new ICS ROM back brick the phone, so I looked a bit more into it. From what I gathered, using a recovery on and ICS rom to install a new ICS ROM has a CHANCE to brick the phone?
If this is true, what is the easiest way to go from one rom to another? For my recent ROM I used the guide where I use odin mode to install the stock GB ROM then use another tool to get CWM on my phone then use THAT to install the ROM.
So my main question, is, is that the easiest way to go about changing between ICS roms? Can mobile ODIN be used more effectively? If that's what I have to do that's what I have to do....but I feel like there should be an easier way....hopefully.
Thank you all and thank you devs for all of your hard work!
There's an el26 + cwm kernel our there. I know you can get it from several threads to include the Frankenstein rom. All you need to do is mobile Odin that flash and as long as what rom you flash has an ics kernel you are good to go. No need for multiple flashes and odins

Ya mobile Odin makes it ez. Flash a non-stock recovery kernel prefferably the el26 cwm on mobile Odin then in cwm use calkulins wipe all zip then flash rom of choice

OK I get my device tomorrow and I'm so happy! I plan to root it and I just wanted to know if flashing an ICS can potentially harm the device? Say that I flash back to a GB rom will everything still be perfect and work? Thanks
Sorry for all the questions just want to be sure for my device's arrival!
Do a nandroid backup first and if something goes wrong you can allways restore the back up and voila everything working perfect again. I do it all the time
Any flash can potentially harm a device...like docmarioce stated nandroid first. You can always pull one of the GB recovery ROMs from the Dev forum to go completely back to GB.
I'd highly, highly recommend watching some of qbking77's youtube videos on flashing, he's done an amazing job putting these together.
^^^ yeah, QBKing is awesome!

You have to Odin back to EL29 if you are on an ICS ROM and want to go back to GB.
Read, read, read before flashing any ROM

Don't use the recovery found on ANY ICS ROM. That means if you flash CM9, Calk's, Blendz, Venum (any ICS Rom leak), you will have ICS Rogue Repack Recovery which is known for BRICKING so many phones.
Note that, it's not the creator of the Rogue Recovery repack to blame, it is that Samsung is packing faulty kernels; Steady Hawkin, the creator, has even bricked his phone using his own tried and true methods. For some reason, the samsung kernels for ICS mess up the partitions on the phone when the recovery on an ICS leak is used.
So to sum things up.
1. DO NOT FLASH/WIPE/ RESTORE anything with the recovery repacked with the ICS leak ROMs.
2. If you want to flash, odin stock EL26 CWM.
(You might want to use the autoroot method by sfhub to install because odin'ing stuff gives you a yellow triangle on boot—Don't trust me on this, just a guess)
3. DO NOT FLASH/WIPE/RESTORE or even think of using the recovery found on any ICS ROM. Some CM9 users have bricked their phone simply by wiping cache on the recovery in CM9.
When you boot into recovery on an ICS ROM LEAK, and you see ROGUE, DO NOT FLASH/WIPE RESTORE! Run away!
My tone might be overexaggerated, but there have been many bricks reported on the CM9 dev thread here that I frequent. Those who used the rogue repack kernels found on ICS rom leaks instead of taking the safer route of odin'ing stock EL26 CWM and flashing/wiping/restoring on that, have bricked their phones.

Flashing ICS
I have successfully flashed a ICS ROM and then restored a backup to GB. This was before I was warned I have seen many of my friends hard brick there phone. I am waiting for a stable ICS ROM with a stable CWM.

ICS is actually being pushed to the International version now in some places. I don't honestly thing we will see a March 15th date for us however (but hey I could be wrong)
As for Flashing ICS please read carefully there have been a ton of Bricks flashing ICS roms with ICS based kernels that have a recovery added to them. Your best bet honestly is to relax and chill read for awhile or a bit and when you feel confident in doing it then do so. My words for you ALWAYS keep Odin handy and if you do want to go back to a GB based rom then Odin a GB rom (like sfhub's EL29 Stock rooted) and push a GB based kernel with his auto root package.
Some people are lucky when using the ICS kernel recovery; in fact I am one of them . But eventually that luck will run out. I'm fortunate that I learned about its dangers before I could get a chance to brick my phone.

Yes some have been lucky this is true. But when I see one of our own devs Brick their device from doing it not just users (thought they do count as well) I tend to be on the safe side and give people the way not only myself but others have done things for flashing between different roms and have so far always been safe
Here is what worked for me...
Download stock rom for ics fc07
Download rogue stock fc07 kernel
Place both on external SD card
Use sfhub's one click root method
Use sfhub's clockwork method
Make a backup
Wipe everything and run calks format all zip
Flash the rom and kernel (and modem) in the same setting and ur gtg

I would say as long as you have Odin and take your time (whether its going to ICS or back to Gingerbread) then you will have no problems. If you want to be really safe, make it a rule that you flash ICS from a Gingerbread EL26 kernel w/CWM Recovery and if you want to flash something else once on ICS, Odin flash back to stock Gingerbread, Odin flash kernel with recovery and go from there. You can always PM me and I can shoot you links as well. Some people aren't having problems flashing from ICS w/ custom recovery but many have..including some devs

So let me try and get this right...I'm on fd26 stock rooted in order to flash a new ROM all I have to do is flash a GB kernel and not go back to GB fully, and if I wanna flash just a theme then I just use el29 kernel also is this correct? If not what are the steps I take to flash a new ics ROM from stock rooted fd26??? Thank You in advance!!!

You have to flash the el26 CWM kernel (if you're on an ICS rom it won't boot because it's a GB kernel) then boot into recovery and you can flash stuff that way. If you do a theme, be sure to flash an ICS kernel after flashing the theme so it will boot normal again. Roms have kernels in them already so you don't have to worry about them.
Here's the el26 cwm kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25017238

Honestly what you have to do is read the OP fully and do whatever is asked of you in there to make sure your phone is upgraded properly. Making new threads asking questions that may give you multiple answers may only confuse you further. I assume if you have to still ask this question with the amount of how to not brick and safe way to flash threads then you are still a little confused.
Best way to not have a paperweight is to follow whatever the OP's thread info to the letter. what rom you trying to flash
Jus' Sayin'
Yeah all I have done is went from stock to stock rooted and I have stayed stock rooted that's easy for me using the PC version of odin. I just wanted to start flashing new roms I have read all the posts and realize how not to brick I was simply wanting to know what would be the easiest way to go from stock rooted fd26 to like blazer ROM our mijjaz the goodness as I have not flashed using cwm recovery before...

Hello everyone, I'm a new to the et4g , i just came from an evo 3d a few weeks ago. Right now I'm a running calks latest fd26 with the help of acs test recovery. I've been searching spool over the threads but can not find links for any of the custom recoveries. So what i would like to know is what do you think is the best recovery in your opinion and if you can drop links/point me in the right direction thanx!

You should NOT be using custom recovery in ICS if you are not absolutely certain how it all works. I know that the Calk's 1.5 FD26 kernel came with one but if you use it incorrectly, you will have a very nice paperweight.
The only recovery that is recommended while on ICS is the STOCKCWM-EL26.TAR recovery that you can get here and it should be flashed from Odin:
http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Repack/EL26/
Thank you, i have read that about it could cause many problems but wasn't sure which could be used

If you were on Gingerbread it wouldn't matter. But, you're using ICS so it makes a huge difference.
Since you are on Calk's 1.5 like me, I will try to tell you how to use the built-in recovery as safely as possible with the FD26 kernel.
I use the recovery to backup or restore the FD26 rom only while I am using it! (Do NOT use it to flash another rom or restore a different version of Android, if you plan on going to a different rom, see below!) You can do other simple stuff that won't harm anything like wipe cache and davlik too.
If you plan on flashing a different kernel or modem, use ODIN:
If you plan on going to a different ROM, use ODIN to flash the EL26 stock recovery I gave you a link for.
Once you flash the EL26, you will no longer be able to boot into ICS, so be prepared and have the ROM you want to flash (with EL26) already downloaded to the phone. Always wipe manually or use Calkulin's 'format all' before flashing a rom.
If you are not certain about using the EL26 recovery or get stuck in some other way, just use this easy guide I wrote to bring you back to stock rooted with CWM recovery:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24158551&postcount=9980
Edit: Corrected link posted above. Thanks.
I currently am on Blazer ICS ROM, and i noticed there are all these Jellbean ROMs, how can I upgrade to a jellybean ROM? Do I just download the jellybean ROM, put on my MicroSD card, and install it in clockwork recovery?
Also, what is a good Jellybean ROM?
Cm10 from phantomphreak53 is awesome. You can flash like usual. One thing I'd recommend it to get a GPS lock and make maps navigate somewhere. Leave it on and boot into recovery. It's the GPS trick you probably already know about.
Make sure your on a safe kernel/recovery also before flashing any roms on ics. Agats & Chris 41g custom recoveries are preferred but you can also use sfhubs one click Odin method to avoid bricking.

Hello all - Relatively new to all this. Have mostly just followed qbking77's videos and have successfully rooted, installed AGATS, and then updated to JB FK23 . My second phone is not cooperating at all and has multiple bugs. I have been able to unroot it back to stock FI27 and have now rerooted it on FI27 again successfully as well. Now I am not sure if I need to first put on some sort of custom recovery or go straight to installing JB. I think the part that got screwed up the first attempt was installing the custom recovery AGATS. First of all I really am not sure what that does/if I need it at all before I proceed with installing the JBFK23 update. Can I update to FK23 without any sort of custom recovery? Is AGATS the one I should use or CWM? This whole recovery process is what is really confusing to me and could use some more explaining! The install procedure for the custom recovery video was somewhat fuzzy to me as well. It simply said to drag the 2 files onto your phone from the PC (the AGAT FI27 repack.tar and MobileOdinLitev3.57.apk files) Where do I put them on the phone??? Any particular folder? I am comfortable with the Odin OneClick method qbking uses as far as the installing of the FK23 part, I just need some guidance about this recovery stuff...thanks in advance

As far as I know you can one click straight to fk23 without being rooted. Don't use any ics kernel repacks though because the emmc bug is still enabled in them which will brick your phone. The Kuban kernel is safe, and so are any of agat's besides the repacked one. To be completely safe a lot of people just use el26 CWM to flash/wipe to be safe for sure. That's where mobile odin (requires root) comes in. You use it to flash the kernel, and boot into recovery to do whatever you need to do. So in that sense you need to be rooted. That is if you're going to use a custom recovery to flash fk23.

Well thanks for the quick reply...maybe I should have said I was totally new then instead of relatively new because that was pure Greek to me. I am sorry and don't mean to be rude but I have absolutely no idea what most of what you said means. I guess I'll have to blindly follow the qbking videos without really knowing what I'm actually accomplishing in each step. And isn't AGAT_FI27_repack.tar an "ics kernel repack" (from your reply above)? Why would he tell users to use that repack? And what is a kernel anyway?
Thx
Ah I see lol. Well read the e4gt wiki then.
