Hello all,
I am about to set back into the android world and had a quick question on the G2. I know in the past the G2 had wifi calling and tmobile tethering. Looks like (I did some searching) in the past it was free to tether although HTC said with the ICS updates it will be gone. Thing is the G2 does not get the official ICS. If I flash an ICS rom will there be free tethering? And I assume the wifi calling uses minutes but gives you the high quality of a call via wifi.
I will probably be adding the $30 prepaid plan for 100 minutes, unlmt data and messaging..
Thanks!

I haven't used wifi calling but free tethering still works the same way it did in gingerbread.
Tethering still works, and there is a mod to get Wifi Calling working on ICS roms.

Mod for that is in my signature which I use on EliteRom. And I can verify the mod works as I've used it several times.
If you want a ROM that already has the Wifi Calling baked in, then you can try Andromadus Mimicry. You'll have to update the radio to the required version but that's a simple thing. Links to both the radio and the ROM are in my signature.
Thanks folks.
My craiglister backed out today when I told them I was going to need to check the ESN before buying (hmm sketchy huh). So I am still on the hunt. Thanks for the info, I will definitely revisit shortly.

I pay $30 for my mobile hotspot and unlimited data on my Galaxy Nexus, and just today the hotspot feature no longer works. When I activate it, it says error and just stops working. Spent about 90 minutes on the phone with Verizon they reactivated my phone, changed settings and couldn't get it to work. As a last resort they wanted to do a factory reset. At the time I couldn't do that, and they said if that doesn't work then I'll need a new phone.
I tried the reset a few minutes ago and it didn't help, still says error.
Any suggestions?
I have tried a few of the hotspot apps on the market, none have worked.
I found a thread on vzw community site with my exact same problem.....

Hoping someone on sad can help.
Phone is rooted on stock rom(4.02) and radios.
I flashed with Revolution Rom and was able to use my phone as a mobile ap without problems. I'm on just the plain 4gb data plan. Before flashing VZ blocks it because I'm not on a mobile hotspot plan. You ought to give that a try.

Peter Alfonso's "Bugless Beast" 4.0.3 rom supports native tethering as well (and is available right in Rom Manager) =)
If you're going to be rooting, then stop paying for hotspot you'll get it for free on custom ROMs (or stock ROM once devs figure out how to stop VZW from checking in on tethering).

Mine is working today as well............
Very weird issue
So I just installed the FK23 stock rooted full wipe one click. I'm able to tether with the sprint hotspot app with no further modifications. ??
Is Sprint opening up tethering, or did Samsung dev's screw up and forget to put on the code to check your plan?
This is 3g, I don't have 4g anywhere, so no comment on that.

Ha! I didnt even bother to try the built in hotspot cause I assumed it was lock. I actually spent some time this morning trying to get 3rd party hotspot apps work. Man I feel dumb right now. Good find. Should always check the obvious first. And btw I do have 4g and it is working.
Same here... I don't have it in my plan and 4g is working with tether. I wonder how long it will last?
Mine just turned on but it used my Foxfi network name. Either way it works, :good:
Hello, One of the main reasons for me buying a galaxy s2 and switching to T-Mobile unlimited from virgin mobile was to use wifi hotspot in my car for streaming radio and the like. well when i got it i found out that not only did it not work, but i cant even pay extra to have it as it's not supported by my 70 dollar a month plan. I haven't rooted my phone or installed any other roms on it, it's just stock.
do any of you know which rom would support mobile hotspot so i can use it if any? id hate to go back to virgin mobile after spending all this money to have a fast network.
-thanks

I'm pretty sure almost all of them support free tethering. From my experience, any CM ROM will have free tethering. I have always been a die hard fan of CM and never really used any other ROM except the super sexy MIUI. Which I am using the JB version atm. The only issue with this ROM is the lack of WiFi calling but I will gladly trade WiFi calling for the sexiness that is MIUI! Pretty stable so far! No issues.
You should try CM9. Its an ICS ROM and is better than CM10 IMHO. Only because CM9 allows you to tweak it a bit more. Cyanogenmod is the most stable ROM out IMHO. Def a wise choice that you will not regret.
The thing about tethering is it uses your data plan. So if you have anything less than unlimited.... your most likely going to run into problems. That throttling crap is a pain in the butt! I had a 2GB plan and used it up in a few days due to YouTube and Pandora and it would take 10 minutes just to load Facebook. I also use T-Mobile but I paid the extra $10 a month for unlimited.

Just as codecaine21 mentioned, most of the custom ROMs out there have tethering capabilities. If you will be tethering via a laptop, be sure to see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677490 . You may need to change the UA string in your laptop's web browser to avoid being redirected to a t-mobile mobile web plan page. If you are tethering using a mobile device, you shouldn't have any issues. Hope this helps.

If he is running CM or MIUI, he would not need to change his browsers UA string.
When has the UA string ever been an issue on a custom/aftermarket ROM?

No Root Tethering ICS stock rom - go to settings, applications, on top list select All, find TetheringProvisioning and disable it.
free wifi tethering t-mobile sgh-t989 4.0.4 works
okay let me just start off by saying I did not figure this out by myself. someone put me on to this method about a year ago here on xda I'm sorry i can't remember the user name but if you know who you are thankyou. first of all you must be rooted for this method next download titanium backup open up titanium backup grant superuser permission if this is your first time using the application next click on the middle button back up/restore scroll almost all the way to the bottom find tethering provisions click on tethering provision if you have Titanium Backup Pro you will be able to backup this file and or freeze the file or completely uninstall the file next find wifi sharing manager also under backup/ restore once both of these files are either frozen or uninstalled reboot your phone and enjoy free wifi tethering
Try this ....

Ok. For those that ARE NOT running 4.1/4.2, The tethering provision has already been removed. The newest CM builds have a very difficult time using the Tether for Root users. Some people would like to say that all it takes is to change the device profile to Galaxy S2, but that doesn't work. And the OP said he is running stock, no root. Not many apps, if any, will work with his device on 4.0.4. Might have to downgrade to GB. That was the last time WIFI Tether for Root users worked for me.
He in 4.0.4 stock rom root

i've been using infamous resurrection 2.0 and hot spot works just fine. this ROM is pretty much like the stock one with few modifications. Other folks talk about other ROMs; yes they do work well; but if you prefer something closer to stock like me, then infamous would be something to consider.

Thanks a lot for all of your info. i manged to root my phone with no problems and flashed my phone to aokp_hercules_jb-mr1_build-5.
This is my first time flashing a new rom on a phone and this one seems pretty stable. I have been using it for a couple weeks now and there hasn't been any problems yet. If i didn't know i would think this build shipped with the phone. google now works great, USB tether works, and mobile hotspot works with some trial and error. however, when my ipod and ipad both connect to mobile hotspot, they do nothing. I was trying to stream pandora and tunein from from the ipod through my car using hotspot but i guess it's just a problem with iOS devices as other phones and laptops connect fine.
This will work for now until either the real JB comes out or I buy a nexus or new galaxy device. thanks.
Title pretty much says it all...is T-Mobile wifi calling working on the GPe S4 yet? And if not, do we have any hopes of getting it working any time soon?
I'm seriously considering dropping VZ like a bad habit, but wifi calling would be a must to be able to use my phone at work.
I don't think so. It's a T-Mobile feature. I wish it would. Wi-Fi calling is a must for me too. My house is in an LTE area but my house is kind of going downhill. And it's surrounded by trees. Wi-Fi calling is a feature that made me switch to T-Mobile along with unlimited everything and cheap prices. And Wi-Fi calling is only available in the T-Mobile stock ROM.

There is a thread about getting wifi calling to work on other ROMs in the developers only section. People have been trying for years now with no avail. That is why I have never used a non TW rom.

Fwiw, VoIP apps can work quite well, AND the calls are free, unlike with wifi calling.
Some are simple to use such as Spare Phone, GrooveIP, etc. but may introduce some voice delay. I use Sipdroid and it's really been improved with virtually no delay and sounds great. Sipdroid requires a free account at pbxes.org.
Note that all VoIP apps require the use of a secondary #. I use Google Voice which is also free.
I rock Sipdroid on my GE ROM phone with no problem.
Again, fwiw.
So I'm coming from a rooted nexus 4 that never got capped out when tethering. My g3 just hit the cap today and I'm wondering if anyone knows a work around to get passed the cap. I have the unlimited plan with 5gbs of tethering every month and I just hit the 5 and still have 10 days left on my plan. Little info the phones a T-Mobile just got the new update and I'm unrooted. Thanks for the help guys
Good luck bro. Haven't seen anything on here about hitting the cap or mods
BAD ASS G3
The Wifi Tether App now only works with HTTPS sites and no other ones.
You can try PDAnet/FoxFi, but I haven't used those and I'm not too sure if they work on the G3 on Tmo's network or not.
Those two apps might work, as you do not need root to use them.
You can try autoprime's tether mod, but you need to be rooted to use it. Thread here.

Check out the Prime Tether MOD in the: T-Mobile G3 Android Development forum. this helped me, but it doesn't work on the new update (D85110m) That's all I can say just in-case the MAN is watchin' LOL
UPDATE
So a little update if anyone else needed the info, FoxFi works i had to buy the key for 7.99 but it was worth it. It still uses up your data but it doesn't count toward your tethering usage limit. Good day.
Actually the Prime Tether MOD works on both updates and it does bypass your tether limit.
Just to test my TMobile connection I did 128GB last month with no problems.
The only way I've been able to bypass data caps on any device is to use VPN. Since the data is being encrypted they can't see if its data from the phone or a tethered device, I've been doing this over 2 years and have never hit a data cap.
