I looked an could not find anything in other threads so I put this one in hear because I figured it is general. I just bought an wifi only iPad and I wanted to know if there was anyway i could tether the internet to it. I do not have a rooted slide and I am not looking to go in that direction. I was thinking my best bet is through Bluetooth but don't know. I thought about pdanet but I don't think it will work. Any sort of help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
Unless a new wifi tether app that does not require root has come into existance without my knowledge, no, you can not wifi tether with this phone at the moment. Until tmobile updates us to 2.2 or you root, you will not see wifi tether on your phone. And since tmobile make exclude (i am not implying they will) wifi tether in the 2.2 update, you might as well root. I personally cant figure out how anyone has lasted this long without root. Simply not enough space for apps.
Isnt buying an ipad an abomination to android owners? It is to me lol!

Yeah, check out Chiefzreload rom. Same as stock. Or you can go with one of the other sense roms. There is a 2.2 with sense that has working Bluetooth and wifi

Once rooted can it be unrooted? Does anyone know if 2.2 will have wifi tethering?
Yes, its possible to unroot. Take a look at the latest tmobile 2.2 phones and if they have wifi tether then you can probably assume we will. We will get wifi calling though

Congratulations on your iPad purchase. I'm sure you'll love it too. I also have the wifi-only version and a mytouch slide.
If you do not want to root, you can wait for T-mobile's 2.2 (froyo) update and I would expect you will be able to pay T-mobile $15 per month to use your slide as a wifi hotspot.
If you are willing to root your slide, you can turn your slide into a hotspot now.
The first thing I did was root my slide. After I did that I did NOT put the Eng build on at the time--I left my slide stock but rooted. I couldn't get the Barnacle tethering app to work at that time but the Wireless Tether app worked just fine with the ipad.
Recently, I flashed the Eng ROM and then I flashed Cyanogen 6.5 RC1 ROM. Wireless Tether app didn't work, but I installed Barnacle and it is working just fine with my iPad.
So, I just want to tell you that if you root your phone, you will be able to use it as a wifi hotspot. If you don't want to root, just hold on and I expect that T-mobile will offer the feature soon.
Thanks for the post. You said that you could not get barnacle to work but you did get a wireless tethering app to work. Which app was that?
the wifi tether can be obtained from here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
After you root your phone, email it to yourself and open. Otherwise, transfer to your SD card and open with a file manager program like ASTRO.
Barnacle is available through the market.
which one would i download. And if i root the phone will i still receive over the air updates?
If you plan to use CM6.1 RC1, wireless tether version 2.0.5pre14 works great.
Sent from my CM6 Slide
would I still be able to receive ota updates?
Not from T-Mobile. However, CyanogenMod is updated more frequently and there are nightly builds for those of us that want to have the latest and greatest. Although at the cost of stability at times. But that's what makes it fun.
That being said, when T-Mobile decides to update, shortly after someone will make a rooted version.
Sent from my CM6 Slide
I'll just add to what you said. If you root BUT stay on the stock rom (don't flash the ENG build or anything) you will receive the ota updates. I'm not 100% but I think CR_MOD will get them also since it has the APN and a few other settings required to be pushed updates.
On CM6.1 RC1, wireless tether version 2.0.5pre3-test3 did not work for me (it worked on rooted stock). I later tried Barnacle and it worked fine so I did not try other versions.
It is good to know that if I had tried 2.0.5pre14, it would have worked great.
I am new to rooting/modding etc. and appreciate the help on XDA.
Anyhow, if one roots the slide, they should be able to use a hotspot app to tether with the ipad over wifi.
What is the best way to root and keep the stock without having to flash anything. And what app would i use to tether wifi? does barnacle work well?
The stickies on the Development section can help you.
The current method to root the slide is here (sticky in Development section):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754020
The old way that I used in July before the T-mobile update:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=702973
It is my understanding that the old method won't work if your phone has the latest T-mobile update on it.
If you root the slide but do not flash the Eng ROM, your phone will be rooted and it will keep the stock ROM.
You can try Barnacle from Market or get the wireless tether program. Between the two programs, one will work for you once your phone is rooted. I know it is a little intimidating to root the phone, but I am very glad that I did it. I am also glad that I put the cyanogen ROM on my phone too.
Thanks for everyones help on the subject. I found the best way for me to tether for my ipad and i don't have to go through the process of rooting. It's called universalandroot and it works on the mytouch slide. It roots the phone temporally and i am able to keep the stock rom like i wanted.

Hey everybody.
I am in need of having my wireless tether run in infrastructure mode instead of adhoc.
I am running a Rooted Epic. Stock ROM/Kernel.
I don't mind flashing kernels if required.
Thank you for your help!!!
Go here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...mmary+Uploaded+ReleaseDate+Size+DownloadCount
And choose one of the wifi tether 3.0.0 versions,
I recommend backing apps and info in case something gets corrupted and you may want to get any of the custom kernals in the development section will make it work better.
This ones are experimental so use at ur own risk and always have a backup. They do infrastructure
Thanks for the advice. I downloaded the genocide 1.0 kernel. Installed it.
When I install any of the 3.0 wifi tether apps, the app starts as normal, requests super user request. I grant it. It then vibrates and reboots....
Any thoughts?
Thank you!

Hmm have you tried any custom roms...
maybe its a stock rom issue..
also did u try pre 11 ?
If you want to dive in to roms, i reccomend Bonsai first choice or Syndicate for second choice.
You may also want to make sure in the wifi settings to select your device in the profile, then select softap in the setup method and enable mss clamping as well as access control
if those settings dont work on stock rom with genocide then i reccomend getting a custom rom, i use pre11 on bonsai no problem.
Also question are u trying to start wifi tether with 4g on?
if so thats the problem and you need to start in 3g then turn on 4g after it started.
Right on! Thank you.
Yes you hit the nail on the head with having 4g on.
Disabled 4g. Connected via wireless tether 3 pre11 bamn online no issues.
Stock ROM / Genocide 1.0 Kernel.
Problem with me and the epic is I get way to involved and find my self wasting hours of time dealing with roms / updates / etc. So I have elected to stay with EC05 + root + Kernel.
Again thank you for your help, being a Network guy I understand what it takes getting good support.
Thank you.

not a problem, what so ever, just been on these forums and reading a lot since the epic came out so i know my share of stuff.
Oh and im actually going to school working on my network degree
Hello I had a related question: I just rooted my EPIC with the stock filesystem yesterday. This was mainly for tethering my Nook color and I used the 2.5.5 CWM version in the sticky for rooting.
I've tried the 3.0 pre 12 release of wifi tether. Following are the problems:
1) On enabling Wifi Tethering, I get a message Sprint "Hotspot Connected" in the notification. And if I click on hotspot connected it takes me right to the Sprint Hotspot! Now does this imply that the 3.0 version ACTUALLY uses the Sprint's hotspot service? In which case, I shall have to pay the $30? Can anyone confirm this?
2) I get awful speeds on my 4g. While my phone gives 4-5 meg download, on tethering with wifi tether, I get very low speeds like barely .5 mbps. In fact the 3G is actually faster than 4G using WiFi tether. Any idea what seems to be throttling the 4G speeds? (and yes, I disconnect 4G before tether and then put it back on).
Thanks in advance!
When it says sprint hot spot activated it activated it with out actually authenticating anything as if u look in the sprint hotspots settings u see the checkbox isn't checked to activate it that's is because the wifi tether app by passes the authentication there for it is free as for slow 4g speeds its a know issue on wifi tether and don't think we will see a fix anytime soon so stick with 3g or don't use it also I think some people have better speeds with pre 10 or 11 on 4g I wouldn't know where as I don't have 4g

Thanks for the reply.
So If I understand correctly, you are saying that the Sprint hotspot is activated but NOT authenticated. This means there will NOT be any charges i.e no $29.99 fee. Correct?
As for the 4G speeds, it's a bummer that it's slow on wifi tether. I'm not sure there is a choice of selecting any other program, as it seems that ONLY wifi tether supports infrastructure routing. That said, I'm ok with 3G speeds (better than nothing).
Thanks again for replying promptly. Much appreciated!!

not a problem bro and yes no charges as it is bypassing the authentication been using it for awhile and no fees
I'm using the viper rom, and I had the same problem of the wifi forcing closing but it seems to work when I go from wifi to hotspot ( I did for testing pruposes, I need it for work Ideally) but when I'm at work and on a 3g connection even 1x (its an old building) it will feeze crash then reboot, but ill try it again.
Does 4g have to be off for hotspotting to work or just not be connected?
And I work at radioshack. I get an employee discount, and when I was having some problems with an unrelated issue, so I called employee line help and hinted about illegally hotspoting, they said the could detect that and charge me. Should I be worried because I'm on an empolyee line? Or is their threat BS?
Thanks for helping a noob.

I wouldn't worry about the threat I've been tether since it first came out and I haven't got any warnings bills or anything u should be fine
As for the force closing, what pre version are u using I'm able to tether 1x and 3g on bonsai Tom on pre 11 and this one has been the mist stable for me.
Also try clearing wifi tether data in settings/manage applications/all/wifi tether/clear data
Or uninstall it and reinstall it
Also try other versions maybe u will have better luck with another version.

Sent from my iPod touch cause epic is bricked or dead
To those not happy with their 4g tethering speeds, I wonder if possibly the root of the cause has something to do with the fact that wifi and 4g will not both enable at the same time (maybe they share some kind of a channel, the same way some devices share irqs, internal laptop devices may share a usb root hub).
In any event, in my experience the wired tether app is MUCH faster on 4G. I want to say I've gotten somewhere between 8-11mbps over USB. Hope this helps someone.
I would expect you have to be rooted and I'm not sure if that is totally available yet, if so can someone please tell me how. Bottom line I need my wifi tether to work again soon. If someone can help please do...

Go to google and type in wireless tether then hit I'm feeling lucky.
I Installed 2.0.7 since the 3.X versions didnt seem ready yet
I thought all the other carriers except Sprint removed access to rooted wifi tethering. I'm on Sprint with Evo 4g..... And its still awesome over here. Come on in the waters fine .....the unlimited "Everything Data" and free mobile to mobile kicks much ass. You aren't a data slave counting every gigabyte on Sprint..... Good luck with those other carriers! I have no clue why reasonable adults who own smartphones that inhale data at ever increasing rates- buy network and phone service in multiyear agreements to be restricted in data usage. Can I call it what it is? People are just stupid! And I find it hilarious.... You suck data thru a straw and I got a wide own fire hydrant that I pay less for! Call quality excellent, data blazing fast and unlimited ..... Hilarious.

You HAVE to be rooted first. To do that go to alpharevx website, dowload their tool, that will give you s off. Make sure ur pc is hooked to the internet and when u r done choose to flash clockwork mod. Then download gingersense rom, then power off ur phone, then power it on by holding down power and volume down. Then, go into recovery and choose install ROM and pick where u put the gingersense ROM, choose it, then flash it, then reboot to system. I like the Barnacle tether app on the market, but of course none of this is relevant if u have already updated ur phone to 2.3, ur screwed unless u buy an xtc clip

I had Sprint but thankfully I'm back on Verizon, Sprint has less towers, even though it worked wherever Verizon did, half the time it was roaming off of Verizon towers where u CAN'T get high speed data. O, Sprint terminated my contract because of that, I was where there was no Sprint signal, only roaming off of Verizon for an extended period of time so they cut me off, no warning, said in the fine print I had x amount of roaming minutes, even though it.was.free. they would not reactivate my phone either, so when I got back home I happily went back to Verizon, o, and I'm unlimited too. Sprint is cheaper though, I will give you that, but u can keep it.

Nope its easy. Once you have root all you have to do is install the app and run it. Give it su privileges when it asks. Hit menu after running it to configure it, then enable it and you are all set
Like I said Barnacle IS on the market, its free and u can use it after u have root. And if u meant is rooting hard, well it depends on you. I'm pretty computer literate, though I can't write code or anything like that, it was easy for me, I used the Linux version though because the Windows version was not working, might throw u for a loop, I don't know, but I hear the Windows version is now working, u can read about how to.step by step in the threads that talk about s off I believe, though I gave you a general idea above. You need to go to HTC website and download the sync drivers, I forgot to mention that, and after u install sync, uninstall the program, just don't go in and manually remove the drivers, that's what u need. Good luck, pm me if u need more info maybe I can help, I don't mind helping people I would hope they would do the same for.me

If you don't think Sprint will be close behind in choking off that "unlimited data" then you must be....can I call you what you are? Blind. I have 2 more years of unlimited Verizon data, so I figure you and I will be hitting that tiered data plan at about the same time.....
First, this belongs in general/discussion. Second I'm on Verizon, and, not once worried about my unlimited data.. all existing customers can stay unlimited as long as they don't change their plan. I can even renew my contract, keep my same plan and still be unlimited.

NoClue....
I used the Windows version of AlphaRev a couple of days ago. It is now working great. The hardest part was typing in the access code it gives you (a string of about 18 characters -- I missed one the first time I tried. Nothing bad happened, I just had to start over.)
Rooting process takes about 5 minutes. I tried CyanogenMod 7.1 beta for DInc 2, but went back to Gingersense, which is essentially the OTA Gingerbread update but with permanent root. I had been using CM7 on my previous phone (OG Droid) and liked it, but I think the gingersense is just a little more elegant looking. Keeps the best of Sense and Gingerbread and lets you get rid of any crap you don't want.
Once you are rooted getting wireless tethering is as simple as installing an app.
If youre rooted, cm7 comes with a native free wifi tether. if youre not running cm7 the barnacle app from market works fine, there are other free wifi tether apps that you can google search for. if youre running a stock rom you can use the vzw hotspot for free wifi tether access by using this hack.

It's the best wifi tether app I've found. The market will refuse to allow you to install it on the Dinc2 due to Verizon forbidding it, but installing the APK directly works fine.
If you need the stock Gingerbread ROM: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/cm_vivow_full-4.zip

Hello all,
I am about to set back into the android world and had a quick question on the G2. I know in the past the G2 had wifi calling and tmobile tethering. Looks like (I did some searching) in the past it was free to tether although HTC said with the ICS updates it will be gone. Thing is the G2 does not get the official ICS. If I flash an ICS rom will there be free tethering? And I assume the wifi calling uses minutes but gives you the high quality of a call via wifi.
I will probably be adding the $30 prepaid plan for 100 minutes, unlmt data and messaging..
Thanks!

Mod for that is in my signature which I use on EliteRom. And I can verify the mod works as I've used it several times.
If you want a ROM that already has the Wifi Calling baked in, then you can try Andromadus Mimicry. You'll have to update the radio to the required version but that's a simple thing. Links to both the radio and the ROM are in my signature.
Thanks folks.
My craiglister backed out today when I told them I was going to need to check the ESN before buying (hmm sketchy huh). So I am still on the hunt. Thanks for the info, I will definitely revisit shortly.

Some people just don't like too many questions, they just wana get rid of it.
So, I just got my S3 today and immediately rooted it. I mainly just want to tether wirelessly. I don't care to flash new ROMS just yet.
Anyway, before I froze the Sprint Hotspot app with Titanium, I opened up the app just to look around. On my old school Evo 4G it would always tell me I would need to activate the service to use the feature. I just used the free android tether.
I started it up and it is working? I tethered it to my iPad... Is this normal?
I didn't get a notice that it's a paid app or anything.
I checked my account, online, and it still shows wireless hotspot as an option to subscribe to, but it is not listed as part of my plan options.
I am wondering if I use it if Sprint is going to just add it to my bill. When I was with Tmobile I got EDGE data for free for 2 years because of some glitch... I lost it when I upgraded.
Maybe this is a similar glitch? Just wondering of this has happened to anyone else?
No, they can't just add it to your bill. It either works or doesn't work.
In your case, it must just be a favourable fluke that it is working, but I'll wager that eventually down the road you'll get the standard message about subscribing to a hotspot plan.
On a side note, have you tried FoxFi? It's a tether app that does not require root.

To add to this, you won't find FoxFi in the play store. Sprint took it off for all sprint users. Instead, you'll have to google FoxFi, find their website, and install the APK.

this is what the cool kids are using for tethering lol. http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wifi_tether_v3_2-pre1.apk set device profile for galaxy nexus(cdma and gsm both work) in the settings. foxfi sucks. its nice if u dont wanna root but if ur already rooted its pointless to waste ur time with it. someone had to say it.

I can CONFIRM that the current version of foxfi does not work on an unrooted Sprint SGS3. Also, the android-wifi-tether is not working, either, on a ROOTED Sprint SGS3 (LG2 - haven't tried it with LG8 release yet).
Sprint seems to be trying pretty hard to prevent its users from wifi tethering (without one of their wifi data plans).
On my current phone foxfi and the andorid tether app both act up. They let me connect for a while and then they just stop working. It may be the phone though. If I do usb tether though I can stay one for days.
I cant wait till I get my s3 next week though.

I can't get WIFI to work at all, but USB tethering via Easytether works great.
Never tried foxfi unrooted but can confirm it doesn't work on my rooted phone. WiFi tether works just fine for me tho(on all modems: Len,lf9,lg2,lg8). I think the problems people are having is just because of the phone being new. I don't think iT has anything to do with sprint trying to block it.

FoxFi says on their site (right now!) ...
"*Support for the new Galaxy S3 and the new ICS update for Epic Touch are being worked on. Should be compatible soon in a future update."
My GS3 is not rooted yet. FoxFi didn't work ... neither Wifi, nor BlueTooth mode for Hotspot. BUT, the Sprint basic Hotspot is working even without me enabling it in my account. Hmmm.
Will try to root and try the google base wifi tether sometime soon.
tethering
Yeah the sprint app is working for me too and I don't have a tethering plan either.

To add to this, you won't find FoxFi in the play store. Sprint took it off for all sprint users. Instead, you'll have to google FoxFi, find their website, and install the APK.

foxfi doesn't work on sprint sgsIII...darn!
If you can't get the Wi-Fi tether app from the market to work...using gnex cdma, set your device profile to generic ics.
