So I'm coming from a rooted nexus 4 that never got capped out when tethering. My g3 just hit the cap today and I'm wondering if anyone knows a work around to get passed the cap. I have the unlimited plan with 5gbs of tethering every month and I just hit the 5 and still have 10 days left on my plan. Little info the phones a T-Mobile just got the new update and I'm unrooted. Thanks for the help guys
Good luck bro. Haven't seen anything on here about hitting the cap or mods
BAD ASS G3
The Wifi Tether App now only works with HTTPS sites and no other ones.
You can try PDAnet/FoxFi, but I haven't used those and I'm not too sure if they work on the G3 on Tmo's network or not.
Those two apps might work, as you do not need root to use them.
You can try autoprime's tether mod, but you need to be rooted to use it. Thread here.

Check out the Prime Tether MOD in the: T-Mobile G3 Android Development forum. this helped me, but it doesn't work on the new update (D85110m) That's all I can say just in-case the MAN is watchin' LOL
UPDATE
So a little update if anyone else needed the info, FoxFi works i had to buy the key for 7.99 but it was worth it. It still uses up your data but it doesn't count toward your tethering usage limit. Good day.
Actually the Prime Tether MOD works on both updates and it does bypass your tether limit.
Just to test my TMobile connection I did 128GB last month with no problems.
The only way I've been able to bypass data caps on any device is to use VPN. Since the data is being encrypted they can't see if its data from the phone or a tethered device, I've been doing this over 2 years and have never hit a data cap.

After installing it, set the device mode to the Galaxy S3 and presto, it works. My iPad sees it, connects, and works like a champ. Only catches are you gotta root and be careful with ATT snooping your data since they will try to make you pay more for tethering.

I tried foxfi too. It never enabled wifi tethering. It would just sit there saying it was enabling but never would.

The North American ATT version does not have a hotspot button in that drop down menu. Also, because it's ATT you have to pay extra for tethering. The solution I listed above is for those that want to run the hotspot without paying ATT extra to do it.
And an update on Foxfi: Apparently our phone and the SG3 use similar chipsets for network connectivity. Unfortunately, the latest version of Foxfi does not work with the SG3 or our phone for mobile hotspot. You can use the bluetooth DUN instead. Hopefully they will put out an update to add the right drivers.

Well I can say that none of these options work on the sprint varient, as I've tried Wifi tether for root, barnacle, and FoxFi, and all show enabled, but I can't find the device to connect to it. So if it really is enabled, I can't see the SSID. I havn't tried to manually connect to the SSID, but I have run all tethering apps with SSID broadcast on, so I should be able to see it...
Never mind got it working using Generic (wlan0) ICS/JB setting...
Please explain, i am using pdanet on mine with sprint via usb tether . I don't want to root at this time but want to get hotspot free.
1 thing I've found with USB tether is that it only works at half speed of what I get for speed the galaxy s3 that I had prior would get full Speed. Also when connected to my laptop via USB I get hey message stating slow battery charge
Anyone know what I can do to increase speed through the USB cable

most of the new new plans have tethering enabled is a different thing
this thread is for enabling tethering without carrier restrictions
for ex rogers doesnt allow tethering on north american one rate plans
Works thanks

Did you find out if Tethering provision works on 4.4.2 yet?
I just wanted to share my most recent experience with this. I used this method earlier this year to tether and it has worked great until now. I just received a letter from AT&T informing me that I must remove all tethering apps, which I had no other except this apk in place, or they would upgrade my plan to a tethering plan at the end of this month. It appears AT&T found a way to track this method, or they are assuming tethering is taking place due to high data usage during the last billing cycle.
I just wanted to share my experience and thank everyone for the help, it was great while it lasted!

Just wondering if there are any MODs that remove the tethering limit that T-Mobile gives ?
on my Nexus 5, i was able to tether over 25-30GB a month without a problem.
now im back to my 5GB limit ..
Thanks .
Im not bashing you I say to each his own but this is why they made tethering caps to begin with.

No it will not work tether. They changed. It on lg g3
Most of the MODs don't work on the G3, so far, at least none that I have seen/tried so far. It has to do with the way the G3 uses the APN and IPv6 (IPv4 works, but LTE is spotty and it also breaks tether, from what I've read), ThePagel can explain is far better than I, if he so wishes.
The best way to get it to is via the app "Wifi Tehther App", which works perfectly and masks your tether use as mobile data use and not as hotspot use.

You don't need root to tether, just go into phone setting and turn on hotspot. Once phone see what your trying to connect to, it will show up as a connection point on item being connected like a laptop. You would then connect to phone like a modem and use the password the phone gives you. You will be then sharing the phones data.

I dont have unlimited but i have 32g of monthly data.
its under setting>connections>mobile_hotspot_and_tethering
you should not have to replace a modded tether.apk(whatever the name was) like what you have mention on the other thread.
could it be that att purposely gave you the one without that apk, just because you have unlimited data?

Hi, If you don't have unlimited then that's why. They make unlimited users pay for their hotspot....
I've tried the network signal refresher route used with the original pixels, but it isn't working for me. Does anyone know how to get tethering working on a brand new Pixel 2 xl? I'm ok with rooting if it comes to that... but pretty much I just want to get back to the same functionality I had with my Oneplus One.
there are tethering apps you can use, or if you can wait for root (soon I hope) you can edit the build.prop to disable the tethering provision check.

Call ATT and add your IMIE to the phone number you are using.
I have an unlocked P2 XL and I had to call them, give them the IMEI(VZW lets you do it yourself online), the girl on the phone entered it, I rebooted and now it works properly.
Only thing I need to figure out now, is how to get WiFi calling to work.

Is hotspot part of your plan as well?
I think so. We have an Unlimited plan, but we get 10gb of tethering included... my OnePlus 3 had tethering built in that bypassed the plan and tethered Unlimited whether they wanted me to or not.
I'm on cricket, I'm not paying $10/month for tethering I've been able to do for over 3 years when I was on my Oneplus One.
Has anyone else been able to get tethering to work through an app? This is going to be annoying if I need to travel for work. I may have to bring my onePlus one along just for tethering...

Thanks! I wish root would appear faster! I thought since it was Google's phone, the images would be out already.
I guess I don't understand why it isn't tethering.
If you are not on an Unlimited data plan, it should just work, without root. It's illegal for carriers to block tethering when you are on a tiered data plan. The FCC slapped the carriers down and determined that if you pay for 15GB, then it doesn't matter how you use it, you can tether.
If you are on an Unlimited plan, make sure that tethering is included and give AT&T your IMEI and have them add it to your account, have them enable tethering and whatever other features you want, reboot your phone, and it will work.
I literally just went through this with them, and tethering works on my AT&T Unlimited data plan, right through the stock tethering feature... no app, and no root.
If you are trying to tether a laptop you can checkout PdaNet+ in the appstore. Will allow you to tether over USB (preferred) or Bluetooth (painfully slow). I havent found an app that enables wifi tethering without rooting and editing system files as others have mentioned.
I had the same issue on Sprint, and while I get 10GB of tethering included in my "unlimited" plan, it did not work. Once I called Sprint, they did something on their end and the provisioning check worked.

Exactly, you just have to get someone on the phone who knows what they are doing, and get them to add your IMEI to your account to provision the tethering, and then it will work. Many of us have done it.
Rather than wait for root and hope that you can then hack it to get tethering, just pick up the phone and get someone knowledgeable to fix it.
lets put this in a simple way, most carriers DO NOT want you tethering without paying for it. if you are paying for it, then they would normally have an app that does this. if you are trying to do the sneaky "my carrier doesn't need to know how i use my data" way buy editing build.prob and maybe the tethering_dun change, then tell me, why would this be enabled be default. the carriers cant make their extra buck from the same data, so they forbid it. that simple. unlocked phone, does not refer to the carrier restrictions.
this is even more funny when you think people bought the verizon version and complain about a phone not being unlockable, did NOONE learn from the galaxy nexus (for only 3 months before taken off the nexus project) hell. i could not raise my middle finger high enough when i left verizon.

a better thing to say is READ, READ, READ some more. then before you root, READ.
i dont want to sound like an elitist, but this is not something that a person that doesnt not understand the restrictions, the list of edits sometimes needing to be made, and how even with these edits, tethering is still detectable by the traffic. its not like the carrier will not wonder why your android phone is pinging the windows update servers.
the last thing a novice user should have, is a rooted phone. this is why i forbid root on my mother's phone (someone that tampered with the NAT setting on our business router). and still debate on it on my wife's phone.
the whole autoroot thing, and rom toolboxes should not be used by anyone that doesn't know how to do it manually. if you dont know what the -w option is when restoring to stock, you should not be using a toolbox.
