I would expect you have to be rooted and I'm not sure if that is totally available yet, if so can someone please tell me how. Bottom line I need my wifi tether to work again soon. If someone can help please do...

Go to google and type in wireless tether then hit I'm feeling lucky.
I Installed 2.0.7 since the 3.X versions didnt seem ready yet
I thought all the other carriers except Sprint removed access to rooted wifi tethering. I'm on Sprint with Evo 4g..... And its still awesome over here. Come on in the waters fine .....the unlimited "Everything Data" and free mobile to mobile kicks much ass. You aren't a data slave counting every gigabyte on Sprint..... Good luck with those other carriers! I have no clue why reasonable adults who own smartphones that inhale data at ever increasing rates- buy network and phone service in multiyear agreements to be restricted in data usage. Can I call it what it is? People are just stupid! And I find it hilarious.... You suck data thru a straw and I got a wide own fire hydrant that I pay less for! Call quality excellent, data blazing fast and unlimited ..... Hilarious.

You HAVE to be rooted first. To do that go to alpharevx website, dowload their tool, that will give you s off. Make sure ur pc is hooked to the internet and when u r done choose to flash clockwork mod. Then download gingersense rom, then power off ur phone, then power it on by holding down power and volume down. Then, go into recovery and choose install ROM and pick where u put the gingersense ROM, choose it, then flash it, then reboot to system. I like the Barnacle tether app on the market, but of course none of this is relevant if u have already updated ur phone to 2.3, ur screwed unless u buy an xtc clip

I had Sprint but thankfully I'm back on Verizon, Sprint has less towers, even though it worked wherever Verizon did, half the time it was roaming off of Verizon towers where u CAN'T get high speed data. O, Sprint terminated my contract because of that, I was where there was no Sprint signal, only roaming off of Verizon for an extended period of time so they cut me off, no warning, said in the fine print I had x amount of roaming minutes, even though it.was.free. they would not reactivate my phone either, so when I got back home I happily went back to Verizon, o, and I'm unlimited too. Sprint is cheaper though, I will give you that, but u can keep it.

No I have not yet done the 2.3 update, so I assume the free wifi tether will be fine if I get it rooted. Is the method real hard by chance

Nope its easy. Once you have root all you have to do is install the app and run it. Give it su privileges when it asks. Hit menu after running it to configure it, then enable it and you are all set
Like I said Barnacle IS on the market, its free and u can use it after u have root. And if u meant is rooting hard, well it depends on you. I'm pretty computer literate, though I can't write code or anything like that, it was easy for me, I used the Linux version though because the Windows version was not working, might throw u for a loop, I don't know, but I hear the Windows version is now working, u can read about how to.step by step in the threads that talk about s off I believe, though I gave you a general idea above. You need to go to HTC website and download the sync drivers, I forgot to mention that, and after u install sync, uninstall the program, just don't go in and manually remove the drivers, that's what u need. Good luck, pm me if u need more info maybe I can help, I don't mind helping people I would hope they would do the same for.me

If you don't think Sprint will be close behind in choking off that "unlimited data" then you must be....can I call you what you are? Blind. I have 2 more years of unlimited Verizon data, so I figure you and I will be hitting that tiered data plan at about the same time.....
First, this belongs in general/discussion. Second I'm on Verizon, and, not once worried about my unlimited data.. all existing customers can stay unlimited as long as they don't change their plan. I can even renew my contract, keep my same plan and still be unlimited.

NoClue....
I used the Windows version of AlphaRev a couple of days ago. It is now working great. The hardest part was typing in the access code it gives you (a string of about 18 characters -- I missed one the first time I tried. Nothing bad happened, I just had to start over.)
Rooting process takes about 5 minutes. I tried CyanogenMod 7.1 beta for DInc 2, but went back to Gingersense, which is essentially the OTA Gingerbread update but with permanent root. I had been using CM7 on my previous phone (OG Droid) and liked it, but I think the gingersense is just a little more elegant looking. Keeps the best of Sense and Gingerbread and lets you get rid of any crap you don't want.
Once you are rooted getting wireless tethering is as simple as installing an app.
If youre rooted, cm7 comes with a native free wifi tether. if youre not running cm7 the barnacle app from market works fine, there are other free wifi tether apps that you can google search for. if youre running a stock rom you can use the vzw hotspot for free wifi tether access by using this hack.

It's the best wifi tether app I've found. The market will refuse to allow you to install it on the Dinc2 due to Verizon forbidding it, but installing the APK directly works fine.
If you need the stock Gingerbread ROM: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/cm_vivow_full-4.zip
Gingerbread ROM's removed Verizon apps: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/rmk-ROM-vivow_gingerbread_2.18.605.4-removed_apps.zip
Radio update: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/PG32IMG.zip
MD5 checker: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/170406/droid apps/md5summer.exe
Once rooted I think you can even just use the stock wifi router app, when I wasn't rooted I tried it and it pulled up a Verizon webpage. now it doesn't. haven't been charged yet..

Hello all,
I am about to set back into the android world and had a quick question on the G2. I know in the past the G2 had wifi calling and tmobile tethering. Looks like (I did some searching) in the past it was free to tether although HTC said with the ICS updates it will be gone. Thing is the G2 does not get the official ICS. If I flash an ICS rom will there be free tethering? And I assume the wifi calling uses minutes but gives you the high quality of a call via wifi.
I will probably be adding the $30 prepaid plan for 100 minutes, unlmt data and messaging..
Thanks!

I haven't used wifi calling but free tethering still works the same way it did in gingerbread.
Tethering still works, and there is a mod to get Wifi Calling working on ICS roms.

Mod for that is in my signature which I use on EliteRom. And I can verify the mod works as I've used it several times.
If you want a ROM that already has the Wifi Calling baked in, then you can try Andromadus Mimicry. You'll have to update the radio to the required version but that's a simple thing. Links to both the radio and the ROM are in my signature.
Thanks folks.
My craiglister backed out today when I told them I was going to need to check the ESN before buying (hmm sketchy huh). So I am still on the hunt. Thanks for the info, I will definitely revisit shortly.

Some people just don't like too many questions, they just wana get rid of it.
Anyone know which program, since the JB 4.1.1 updated (AT&T SGH-I747) will allow tethering preferably both wifi and usb. I tried this one and can't get it to work with the Samsung S3 profile selected or the Galaxy Nexus GSM profile selected.

I'm rooted. That app I referenced specifically says you need a rooted phone. I just don't see the SSID come up on my notebook. I want something that can also tether USB too, as then I don't have to worry about locking down security on the Wifi or draining the phone battery.
What are the options if you root it?

Been searching for an hour now. Tried two other apps. Neither worked. (Neither said root was necessary). Not willing to pay for Foxfi just to see it not work. Elixir 2 people have used but I think this is all pre Jelly Bean, at least for the GSM (AT&T) version of this phone.
Seems maybe we have to wait. All the apps, videos, posts out there seem to be for ICS. Guess this is the downfall when you update within 24 hours of the update being released. Need to let the developers catch up.
I can confirm pdanet works....havent tried foxfi but im sure it does as well considering how similar they work...
Galaxy S III I747
Prior to update I was using FoxFi and it looks like it still works with Jelly Bean but I'm unable to get the Proxy Add-On to work since Jelly Bean.
Do you think I'll get caught tethering if I run FoxFi without the Add-On or does the Add-On only provide a false sense of security and is really not making a difference?
If it makes a difference, I'm on one of the old 2GB plans, not the new shared plans, but not unlimited either. Also, I'm stock, not rooted.
Finally, if you don't think this works, any suggestions that would work in this situation?
Thanks!

I was on the old 5GB plan (the one that allowed tethering) and switched to the new shared plan (since I don't do that much data but do call a lot and wanted the unlimited calling (saves me over a hundred bucks a month)) and on these plans they do allow tethering. From what I understand, you will need to have a rooted phone if you want to tether under any other (older) plan..

I guess we should be specific that we are looking for apps that not only work on JB 4.1.1 but also don't require a tethering or shared data plan. So people say an apps works but fail to point out it's because their carrier is okaying the app since they have a qualifying plan. So pdanet works on JB 4.1.1 SGH-I747 without an AT&T tethering or shared data plan?

No...you should have said "I have no clue what im doing so can you please explain every single detail to me?". WTF does a tethering plan have to do with you being able to tether or not if youre rooted? You need to disable to tethering provision via TB!

Not everyone on here has been on an Android phone and screwing with it all their lives. For example, what the heck is "TB" ? Don't assume everyone has as much experience as you, just because they are a participant on XDA. And I should also add on that requirement, NO CUSTOM ROM.
So an appropriate answer might be the following:
If you are on JB 4.1.1 and want to tether without a tethering plan from your carrier, and you are on the STOCK ROM. You need to do this, this, this and this. Or just post a frickin link to someone who DID take the time to explain it for the rest of us. Does your solution require rooting, or doesn't it. STATE IT. So future people when they search the forums, they don't find a bunch of misleading, dead-end solutions and/or bickering.
I just came from iPhone and I was a jailbreaker. I'm loving the S3 and Jelly Bean. But on the iPhone, I'd jailbreak (equivalent of rooting on Android), install MyWiFi, and DONE and DONE. It seems this was how it was on ICS with this phone. Now on JB, not so simple. There's dozens of posts on several threads on several forums around the Internet of people no longer getting their tethering app to work since JB upgrade. These are both rooted and non-rooted, but they are all STOCK JB ROMs.
So please, tell us the trick to get a stock JB 4.1.1 ROM SGH-I747 AT&T to tether without the plan. We are all ears!

Not sure as I've been to busy with my real life outside of XDA to spend hours reading and reading posts.
Bottom line, if there was an app you can just download and install for ICS before that worked, isn't it just a matter of time until someone publishes an app on Google Play (may require rooting, big deal) that does the same without a bunch of workarounds and crap.
Look one post above yours
Install that zip file via CWM(clockworkmodrecovery)....then download TITANIUM BACKUP (TB...you need the pro version...you can download lucky patcher for that) and go in and freeze the tethering provision app. This will allow you to tether without your carrier knowing...kindof...
P.S. ICS was the same protocol. You have to freeze the tethering provision...
Galaxy S III I747
Thank you. I've got Titanium Backup installed now. So should I just use the built-in AT&T tethering app now or is it 'safer' to use something else?
Found it.
Still no love. CW Recovery and Team Epic Root Installed. TB Pro installed. Tethering Provisioning Uninstalled.
Tried to Tethering Apps on Google Play, neither work. "Free USB Tethering App" and "Wifi Tethering for Root" (tried Auto and Samsung S3 profiles). No Dice. Thought there was an native AT&T app but may have uninstalled it with TB when cleaning out bloatware.
SGH-I747 AT&T
Okay, duh, I found the Tether toggle in Advanced Settings. I also found a couple tether apps that don't require root that actually came up on the network, but I get 'Limited' connectivity indication in Windows with no Internet access.
Now get this, whenever I go into Settings > Advanced > Tether if I toggle it on or off or toggle USB sharing on, I get the message "Settings application has stopped working" Some of the tethering apps also "stop working" when I try to run them even though I see the blue tether notification icon in the status bar and I can see the SSID on the network and connect, but it is as if the phones ability to bridge the wifi hotspot it is providing to the 4G Internet connection is broke.
****. Do I need to load Kies and to a stock firmware restore, or is that not even possible not that I have CW recovery installed. I really really didn't want to get into this Android tweaking Hell and now I'm there. Another wasted frickin weekend! Maybe I'll just go back to iPhone. Hopefully the iOS 6 jailbreak is out now (untethered).
Kind of ticked up about being lead down the road that indicated just freezing the tethering provisioning was the solution to all my woes. Maybe it worked for some (are you on JB 4.1.1 with AT&T SGH-I747???) but not me. After a couple more hours of searching and searching, including all sorts of YouTube videos showing using FoxFi, Wifi Tether for Root, etc, and then a lot of recent comments about it nor working. Anyways.....
Soultion is a newer hacked version of Wifi Tether for Rooted user that is not on the Play Store and the apk has to be downloaded directly. Current version is here:

YouTube Video on it here:

What a pain in the ass it took to finally find this. Guess that's the price you pay when you are brand new to Android and an OS update comes out two weeks after you got your phone and you install it the day it comes out. Sigh.
Ugh. Got too excited too quick. You can't toggle Wifi back on after shutting down tethering without restarting phone! Guess it's going to be a few more days until some good developers come out with a simple one-app solution without issues. It was WAY easier to get free tethering on the jailbroken iPhone that this. I'm shocked this is so hard right now on Android JB 4.1.1. But I have to remember the OS update just came out.
Hello, One of the main reasons for me buying a galaxy s2 and switching to T-Mobile unlimited from virgin mobile was to use wifi hotspot in my car for streaming radio and the like. well when i got it i found out that not only did it not work, but i cant even pay extra to have it as it's not supported by my 70 dollar a month plan. I haven't rooted my phone or installed any other roms on it, it's just stock.
do any of you know which rom would support mobile hotspot so i can use it if any? id hate to go back to virgin mobile after spending all this money to have a fast network.

I'm pretty sure almost all of them support free tethering. From my experience, any CM ROM will have free tethering. I have always been a die hard fan of CM and never really used any other ROM except the super sexy MIUI. Which I am using the JB version atm. The only issue with this ROM is the lack of WiFi calling but I will gladly trade WiFi calling for the sexiness that is MIUI! Pretty stable so far! No issues.
You should try CM9. Its an ICS ROM and is better than CM10 IMHO. Only because CM9 allows you to tweak it a bit more. Cyanogenmod is the most stable ROM out IMHO. Def a wise choice that you will not regret.
The thing about tethering is it uses your data plan. So if you have anything less than unlimited.... your most likely going to run into problems. That throttling crap is a pain in the butt! I had a 2GB plan and used it up in a few days due to YouTube and Pandora and it would take 10 minutes just to load Facebook. I also use T-Mobile but I paid the extra $10 a month for unlimited.

Just as codecaine21 mentioned, most of the custom ROMs out there have tethering capabilities. If you will be tethering via a laptop, be sure to see this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677490 . You may need to change the UA string in your laptop's web browser to avoid being redirected to a t-mobile mobile web plan page. If you are tethering using a mobile device, you shouldn't have any issues. Hope this helps.

Ok. For those that ARE NOT running 4.1/4.2, The tethering provision has already been removed. The newest CM builds have a very difficult time using the Tether for Root users. Some people would like to say that all it takes is to change the device profile to Galaxy S2, but that doesn't work. And the OP said he is running stock, no root. Not many apps, if any, will work with his device on 4.0.4. Might have to downgrade to GB. That was the last time WIFI Tether for Root users worked for me.

Thanks a lot for all of your info. i manged to root my phone with no problems and flashed my phone to aokp_hercules_jb-mr1_build-5.
This is my first time flashing a new rom on a phone and this one seems pretty stable. I have been using it for a couple weeks now and there hasn't been any problems yet. If i didn't know i would think this build shipped with the phone. google now works great, USB tether works, and mobile hotspot works with some trial and error. however, when my ipod and ipad both connect to mobile hotspot, they do nothing. I was trying to stream pandora and tunein from from the ipod through my car using hotspot but i guess it's just a problem with iOS devices as other phones and laptops connect fine.
This will work for now until either the real JB comes out or I buy a nexus or new galaxy device. thanks.

Thats a lot of data. I've gone as high as half that in a couple days. But some people have been saying that it's to obvious because your phone can't possibly burn through that much data. So eventually you might get dropped for violating the terms of use agreement. Idk. This is what I've been told. Just a heads up. That's allot. Plus I fear the day they do away with unlimited data because its used as a home internet service. ... Just saying... That's alot of fuggin data for two hours on a smartphone!! Haha lmao. See if you can hit a hundred!
I tethered my g3 with a playstation 4 and downloaded a full game to see if it would let me without hitting a limit, Thanks for the heads up. Have a few games to download in coming months I'll see if I can hit 100gigs.

My phone shows no data whenever I switch it to ipv4 anybody else having that issue?
data
I set everything up just as your instructions say and so far so good! I am however using skydragon rom with there kernal as a note. What im wondering is how do i tell the difference between using data and using hotspot data? How can i be 100% sure im not going to get a enormous bill at the end of this months cycle?
If you use prime thether mod and use a butt load of data t mobile can't do anything about it. There plan says UNLIMITED DATA! I know Netflix uses a lot, so it's hard for them to figure out on what your using the data for. I've gone as far as 90gb of data last month two months and nothing.
i cant seem to get this Mod to work. i switch roms switch modems. tried both, 10m and 10c and cant get it to work switch apn to Apn to APV4 and cant get it to work. i restarted my computer, my computer connects but there is no DATA coming thru, i tried with other devices, they connect but no data!. I Gave up.
Question. Is the tethering supposed to turn off automatically if it isn't being used? Never noticed this before but lately when I'm steaming to my tablet at work using this mod, if i pause what I'm watching the tethering is turned off. I'm usually gone about 15 minutes when it happens. No biggie i guess but i never noticed this before. Thanks.
SOAB. I just saw there was an option set by default to turn off after 10 minutes. Nm my Question.

Anyone using a custom rom and still have the hot spot bypass?
I've been using the latest CM11 build, and I hit 270GB last month, so it's been working with other roms for me.
Is there a way to add a Hotspot Quick settings icon?
trouble flashing 10c
I have been trying to flash this mod for the last couple of days and get a failed message in twrp everytime. I tried renameing the file to simply "primetether.zip" but continued to get the same failed message. Any ideas of what i may be doing wrong? any help is appreciated. I am currently running the lonely rom 1.2

Hay there I was the one who made that rom and 1.2 is pretty much pure stock + sd card kitkat fix so it shouldn't be on the rom side. If you have any xposed modules running I bet it is the problem or outdated twrp. Try to update twrp with twrp manager from the play store and/or remove all xposed tweaks. If I can give you some advice unless you really like 10C the lonely rom you might want to find a new rom. Sadly I don't have the time and will not be able to update that rom (at least not in the next couple months). I am going to request it to be locked after I do some changes in the op.
Edit* I just remembered I have two 1.2 versions. the first 1.2 was up for about 4 hours before I took it down and turned it into 1.3 so if you have the version that has the 2g/3g/h/4g icons (no 4g lte because H is what tmobile calls 4g and lte is the only true 4g) it is now the 1.3 version and has changes that will not work with primetether. Simply dirty flash the corrected 1.2 over your current build and primetether should work. Does any body know if this mod works with any 5.0 roms?
Sorry if this has been asked before, but is there a version of primetether that works with the stock lollipop coming soon?
no more tethering?
Yes I also ran in to this problem last night. No matter what Rom I use, the Tmobile screen pops up when I try to access my browser. What has happened? Has T-mobile found a way to stop AOSP tethering and prime tethering?
I just tried installing SR Remix and it still doesn't work.
