[Q] Chinese version of the Nokia 900 - Nokia Lumia 900

Hi everyone,
This is my first thread here (and also first post) so i want to say hello and also bring up a situation i have with my new mobile.
Its a "Nokia 900" i bought in China, Shanghai, at the Nokia retail store. Its nice because its unlocked. But it wasnt that cheap... it was cheaper if you compare the price in Brazil, where i live and where i'm using the device. Taxes here are insanely high.
So, the problem i have now is that this mobile is the chinese version. That means it doesnt come with Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn set as default accounts. So i cant add facebook contacts for example and its totally killing the social appeal of wp.
If i try to add an account i'll find Weibo, QQ and Sohu, i dont even know whats that for but i believe its the chinese social networks. Since facebook, twitter and so are blocked in China...
Then i had a little research and found this forum. This specific thread is actualy my only hope: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605144
Now my plan is to use the nokia care suite and try to up/downgrade the firmware/rom so i can have a euro/american like device...
Some information about the versions:
OS version 7.10.8779.8
firmware rev 2175.2101.8779.12201
hardware rev 112.1914.2.0
radio sw 2.1.75.20
radio hw 8055
bootloader 7.17.2.0
And since i couldnt post on the development forum cos i'm noob, here is the question
Do you guys think it could work? is it worth a try?
i can use everything else on the phone, including the facebook and twitter apps. everything works fine but lacking some features. I can't get the facebook chat working under the message tile for example... also the people tile only have the windows live contacts so no pictures... not cool D:
well, thank you in advance for any information!

Try this first:
settings / region+language / system locale (Try English (United states).
Hope it works...

yea thanks for the repply but i've tryed this and it didnt worked out.
i even tried settings > email + account > add an account > other account / advanced setup and set the facebook domain with pw but it didnt worked also...

One reason I hate China is that they censor every goddamn social networking site.
Well, you could try flashing another ROM to it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1605144

I got your PM, and I don't know for sure if it will work. I tried to flash the Rogers ROM to my ATT US Lumia and it would not flash. I was trying to take it from an RM-808 (ATT) to an RM-823 (Rogers). That evidentially does not work.
I think someone said that if the RM-??? number is the same, you can flash another ROM.
It's worth a try, but be aware that it might hurt your phone. I tried Rogers, and it simply gave me a message that it would not flash, but I cannot say for certain that another ROM will not do damage.
PS: I'm sorry I don't have better or more certain news.

this is going so damn wrong that i couldnt even know my phone RM model D:
i had my lesson, never buy mobile phone in china again....

TP2 Basic Questions

Hi,
I've just bought a TP2 and reading through the forum I've picked up that the TP2 is customisable.
My questions are basically
-how customisable is the TP2?? i.e. is it only themes n ringtones that can be changed or can anything be changed on the phone??
Also ive read that applications like radio dont come standard on the TP2 need to be added manually.
-how hard is it to do this and does anybody have any tutorials on how to add apps and where can i get them from??
thanks

the device isnt the variable in customization, virtually every aspect of the TP2 is customizable and as the days go by and the devs create more things the options just become greater.
the radio add is simply installing the radio cab file, takes all of 10 seconds. All you really need to do (for the most part) for different app installs is to read if they support your resolution (480x800).

the customisation of the TP2 isnt customising the phone but the windows OS is that right??
so if i find a good thing for windows OS and its for the right version and correct resolution it should work??
thanks for your help btw
there doesnt seem to be a thanks button

Hi,
Welcome to forums.
Yes there are literaly millions of apps out there for WinMo from any category you can think of, productivity, media players / streamers, games, tools etc etc.
Most apps come in two forms, .cab file extension which can be copied to the memory on the device and run from the file manager, or .exe (the windows normally executable) these are installed on your desktop and the app is then installed to the device the next time you sync it with active sync.
Before getting too in depth, I advise you to read the Wiki, and the first post at the top of this forum. Familiarise yourself with the devices basic functions and where everything in the OS, that way you'll pick things up a lot quicker when reading through posts on the forum.
The entire OS is customisable, skins, pre-installed apps, added functionality (patching missing or poor functionality (NFFP issues) and anything else you can think. What we do here is port newer builds from newer devices to get the latest OS builds and optimisations for our current devices.
Have a good read, you'll understand a lot better.
Cheers,
Beasty

Indeed welcome to the forums.
It seems this is your first windows mobile phone? you can compare it with your windows pc a bit, only it's a bit less complex, though it still is.
On windows you can install every application that is ment for windows. As long as your system meets the system requirements of the software. It's the same with your Touch pro 2.
A lot of software has diffrent versions of their applications, each for a diffrent screen size. This reduces the size of the application (instead of installing the application for all sizes).
There are . CAB files. These are the regular installation files for you phone. Copy them to your phone and run it. (you can upload by bluetooth, but active sync is easier and faster) Then there are .exe files for mobile apps. These you install on you pc while you phone is connected via active sync. Your computer will then install it on your phone.
Now for the customisation part. This is indeed customising the OS. In the (near?) future, there will be a lot of selfmade (cooked) roms available. This goes with a lot of testing, it's the trial and error way of working.
As this is your first WM mobile?, I suggest you wait a while before customizing anything and installing custom roms. I would wait untill there are some stable roms available. Also you need to install HardSPL to make flashing (installing new Roms, and thus new OS versions) less risky. Because flashing and customizing isn't without risk.
I've been doing it quite a while (flashing) and it never went wrong, but there are also people where it did went wrong.
first off thanks beast & quarin when i get paid ill try to donate something to the site.
I'll definatly have a read into the wiki before doing anything to the phone and yes this is my 1st windows mobile so I will just it for a while to get used to it then possible start customising it.
In regards to the apps i can get apart from in this forum are there any other sites where i can download them from??
Also i do have 1 more question but its a just in case kind of question.
Ive bought the HTC sim free, 1 of my main worries is that with my Three(3) network contract SIM. I know I should be able to make calls and send text messages my query is in regards to the internet settings will they automatically be picked up via the SIM card coz when i had my iphone i had to manually put in the address for the APN and im just wondering will i have to do the same??
Thanks

Most likely, the settings will be set automaticly. If not you can set them via Settings (also automaticly). But if you have pre-paid, be carefull when the settings are set. at the moment you open a browser, youtube or other apps that use internet, internet connection will automatic establish. (sorryfor my bad language)

I was targetting the internet costs. They can add up. Don't know you country, but here you can't have internet prepaid without paying a lot of money. So you have too look out (in that case) not to use internet. And it uses internet automaticaly when using a program that's internet related.

[Q] Did Samsung allow voip apps in The Store..??

Well guys...
I am one of almost all bada phone owners who were very sad to find out out that samsung doesnt allow voip apps on its store...
But quite a time back an app called RockeTalk was released in the store which kinda seemed like a voip app... My friend and I after loads of trying and wasting our time ended up making a call to each other.... Ya that apps crap...
But is'nt this a sign showing that Samsung has allowed voip apps to the Store...
Well i actually do not know anything and this is just a speculation...
But if its actually true... we can urge a lot of companies like fring and skype to make their respective apps for bada..... or even make our own !!!
Thanks
Just to clarify, you made a voice call through RockeTalk? and not accidently just a regular call? If so, then I'm downloading this app pronto.
http://www.samsungapps.com/topApps/topAppsDetail.as?productId=G00000399458
Does it have push notifications?

Bump.. Common people someone atleast needs to say a no...!!
@sonalswaroop: voip apps are not available for bada. I dont know how they allowed rocketalk if it supports voip calls, or may be they have changed their policies.on badaforums.net, i have read about some rumors of skype coming on bada platform. But most likely its just a rumor and i didn't see any official news about it. So dont count on it.

I asked my wife to download on her iPhone the rocketalk app. Where were able to add each other as friends, but we cannot chat, I cannot see her online, and certainly we cannot make a video call.
This is another worthless app from Samsung. Pisses me off. Samsung should start suckng the ball of Skype and finally make an app for wave, enough of this voIP bann bullsht from you samsung.
Might as well just quit your BADA foolishness if you will not have an skype app.
Rocketalk is not voip prog. its only send video or voice which before save ones.

[Q] Stock Chinese Froyo posibilities

Hi there all dev heads!
First post here so please bare with me...I have a headache after reading so many threads here...at least I'm willing to learn...
Here's my situation:
I'm a happy owner of a Moto Defy for a week now and before I go ahead and jump onto the rooting and the flashing bandwagon, I would like clear indications on what is possible to achieve, how to do it, what to expect and what not to do on my Defy.
Here are what I'm really after:
A) I want to know if there is a real "not de-blurred" stock (not OC at 1MHz) Chinese ROM that I can flash back to if anything fails don't the road? I know about the bootstraped recovery, but if I ever have to use RSD flashing, I'd like to start from official Chinese Motorola ROM and avoid losing my flash, email, SMS or what not...I'm in China afterall!!
B) I want to know if there is any way for me to use the magic of rooting/flashing to get my desktop VPN to work on my defy --> really I want this to be able to use Skype over wifi when I'm in my house. The Great firewall and Motorola seem to work together to block this possibility and let all the phone carriers controlled by "The Party" make money with the state-controlled carriers by not allowing any VoIP apps on the Defy. My VPN seems to 'lock in' [I see a key on the top taskbar] but I cannot access internet on the 2 browsers I tried [stock and Dolphin HD]. Do I need 'tun' or something??
C) I succesfully used an update.zip on my un-rooted phone to get a working Android market (as oposed to the stock and very limitted Chinese market) but what about being able to use the applanet market? Is it really worth rooting and maybe flashing just to do so?
All that I've seen so far here applies to 1) people living outside China and mainly not limitted by Chinese carriers or 2) people running with ROMs or Nandroids pre-Froyo. I'm not too bottered by Blur since I don't use 3G, social networks or ever data over 2G at the moment --> I connect only using my wifi.
I do understand the advantage of customizations and I sure would like to improve my battery usage by using something like Frozen-xx to use some sort of 'speedstep' on the processor [I find that downclocking under low cpu usage much more attrative than just OC for good quadrant scores...] but that will come maybe one day when I'm fully confident about all that is involved prior to get there. [i don't know what geodex and tun are exactly and I've never used adb backup, recoveries or flashing yet...]
So what is your take on this? Especially my 3 main points A, B C ??
Any Gurus here that can comment on this?
I know that there is a lot of the Defy dev't that originated from here in China, so is there anyone from China that really know what I specifically can do and hope to achieve?
Thanks all for your input and long live xda-dev !!
[Sorry for the long post but don't be shy to put a lot of info as well - the more explanation, the better for me ]
my findings...
I will write a reply to my own questions since someone in a similar situation might find my findings helpful one day...
A) So far, I'm happy with Froyo and can live with MotoBlur since I don't use any sort of sinch'ing. So I'm still not rooted and the standard reset recovery allows me to keep my stock ROM available.
B) VPN on the Defy requires a VPN without encryption to work - plain and simple! I checked with my desktop VPN supplier and they do have 3 specific VPN servers dedicated to smartphones and where encryption is turned off. So I was able to switch to one of those and I'm now over the Great Firewall!!
As for Skype over Wifi, you can only install it if you're within US or Canada. But with the magic of my VPN described above, I could download and install it easilly. The even greater news is that once it's installed, I no longer need to use the VPN to use it --> just over my livingroom's wifi and I'm doing calls!!
C) Like mentioned in the original post, I had the original Chinese market, updated to the standard Android market APk from an update.zip found here on xda-dev and I also found out that no rooting is required to use applanet market. [Althought if you're planning to use apks that require it, then you'll have to do it]
I'm now a happy camper with my Defy
If anyone would like pointers to a good VPN provider, write to me and I can use the referral service from mine [send them your email from my account] and that would give me some credits with them...
Cheers! And keep up developing!!

Microsoft has abandoned open market phones (rant)

I generally don't care so much about not being able to:
1. transfer sms and contacts TO sim
2. sync doc, txt, and pdf files, offline, through Zune
3. sync flac or divx files
4. make an offline backup of contacts or of the whole phone configuration
5. create new accent colors
6. toggle wifi/gps/3g data/bluetooth with a single tap from the home screen
7. dictate sms or other speech orders in my native language
etc...
All of the above limitations (and some more) can be tolerable at some degree because of WP7 general superiority in other levels.
BUT...
I'm really pissed off with Microsoft...They have totally abandoned open market phones...First, we had a major error with Mango for LG update, that forced some people to flash a new official rom in order to get it. I never got a tethering update for my open LG and now I don't even get the latest official 7740 update. I don't f$%^ care about carriers. I bought an officially OPEN device and I demand support, or else they can stop selling us illusions...

Blame your OEM, not Microsoft for not getting tethering. They are the ones delivering the proper drivers needed for tethering to be enabled. The feature is already built in in Mango. Concerning 7740 you're right. But it has been released when? Yesterday? No update so far has reached all users at the same time. It has always taken a few weeks until every single Windows Phone user out there received an update. Knowing that 7740 won't change much, I personally do not really care about when I will receive it.
So far I didn´t get the latest 7740 update either, but I installed it manually with cab sender.

It doesn't fix the keyboard disappearing issue, so it's pretty much useless. This is by far the biggest annoyance for me right now. Keyboard disappears 10+ times when i'm typing a SMS. And in some apps you can't bring back the keyboard by touching the input box. I have to copy/paste and try again.

You are right here, but this wouldn't have happened if Microsoft had put strict rules around its ecosystem. It's unacceptable for such a unified quality concept to have basic specs like tethering, managed almost randomly (at will) by the OEMs without Microsoft's supervision. LG has released the firmware for branded phones (so, there is no arguing here that they couldn't have released it because of hardware restrictions) and totally rejected all of those people who have open phones. WHO controls this type of marketing anarchy around one of the most innovative, popular products of the world?
I'm shocked by this management attitude, because I'm a Microsoft customer for over 18 years and I know very well that they are aces in product support. As I mentioned earlier, ιn my first post, this is not the only fault Ι've been through and I'm looking forward to see this company measuring its actions with responsibility and care but, right now I'm totally disappointed.

[Q] HTC one X in China - how to get the google play store

Hi!
I'll try to explain me as best as possible here about the 2 main issues I have with my One X.
I'm living in Shanghai, and I've bought it here, however, because of the stupid issues between Google and China, my One X doesn't have the Google play store.
I tried to dowmload it, and it doesn't launch, after a second or 2, I'm back to the main screen of my phone.
I contacted HTC, and they basically told me to use the Hiapk market, but it's extremely limited, and some apps won't work. For ex: downloading Foursquare through this parallel market is ok, but when it comes to the install, it would just tell me that the app can't be installed...
I asked HTC if it's possible to overcome these restrictions, as I'm french, and would certainly go back to France someday... Had no answer... As for foursquare, HTC told me to contact foursquare directly.
So, I would like to know if it is possible to change the OS of the phone to put one from anywhere else in the world where the play store is not factory censored, and if that would for example solve the foursquare issue (or any possible issue that I might have with other apps).
Sorry if I'm not using the good terms, but I just switched from IOS to android 3 weeks ago...
The warranty would certainly be void, but I'm up taking the risk as I can't use the phone for more than 2/3 games... I feel like I've just made an expensive mistake...
Thanks in advance for your help!
You can root it and install a custom rom on it that will give you access to the play store.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
How could I do that ? what does root exactly means ?
I'm new to android, and I'm not sure about what I should do. Did few research but I'm not sure about what I should pick and install on it.
I'm not looking for anything fancy, just the same OS but with the possibility to have the play store, I don't really want to overclock or change it at all levels.
Thanks for the answer!
Rooting is like "administrator" access on a PC, if that makes sense. You can install a custom ROM that looks like what you have now but with extra features. I think if you go in the development section there are a few threads you can look at that will help you root and install a custom ROM so you can access the play store. Goodluck
Will definitely give it a shot
Thanks for your help!
If you are rooted you can simply install the 'market enabler' app
Sent from my Nexus S using xda premium
use a VPN
qtableau,
(and others behind the #@$!%* Great FireWall)
i live in SH as well,
Do yourself a really big favor! Get a VPN!
Rooted phones do nothing for websites that are blocked (which come and go).
A rooted phone is not a solution to blocked websites
&
Market Enabler, although a great app, can not be used to unblock websites, it merely tells the Android Market/Google play store you are using a different service provider so you can download apps not available in your country (to bypass the “This item is not compatible with your device” MSG) IE my China Unicom Device is displayed as "AT&T HTC Desire" in the play store
AND because almost every non-Chinese website in the world has a facebook, twitter, and a Google+ feed/rss button/, every time a non Chinese page loads the #@$!%* Great FireWall needs time to check it out before it loads, so without a vpn surfing on a mobile can be horrible.
I use a VPN service provided by 12vpn, you can use it with multiple computers and mobile devices simultaneously. It will change your life. I have it on 4 desktops, a laptop, an iphone and android phone.
And you can use it to access online content that is not available outside certain countries ie: i can access the online TV website hulu.com which is only available to US residents.
one caveat: you CAN'T use it on a computer that has a running a torrent program though...which sucks! You have to close the program before you can run the vpn but just on (i pretty sure this a 12vpn policy, other providers should let u use a torrent program simultaneously)`
Costs about 400RMB a year but freedom is PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!
Disclosure: I am 4 year customer of 12vpn.com and have no other interests/connections to the company
IMHO Chinese censorship is mostly a BUSINESS decision. Same as any governmental organization that requires a certain amount of local programming on TV or radio (FCC, CRTC,oxfam etc)
Hi! I was wondering if you found a solution? I have the exact same problem. I recently bought a Galaxy S3 and found out i cant access google play or any of the google apps. i downloaded the APK files and tried to install it, but they don't open at all. I'd love to hear how you solved (and hope you di!)

I found a solution by paying a bit more...
I gave up on trying to read all the tutorials on how to root phones and went to an electronic market in SH (where I live, if you do, go to xujiahui to do so)
For a hundred RMB, I got it changed to a hongkong OS, where everything is allowed and works great. Some updates not even available on the official one in China went with it. Hope it helps and that you'll be able to find a market near your place.
Basically, my advice for some other people reading this thread: Don't buy it in a real shop, go to a market, they're half the price, and already flashed to a "working" version... wish I'd known that
Play Store also don´t work with VPN cause the issue isn´t connection kind but factory blocked. So I wil go also the way to get my OS changed. Guess there´s a big risk of abortive flash so is there any possibility of orig. OS back up to be flashed back if any inconvience happen?
Pls help me
Hi, I do have the exact same problem with my Note2. I bought it in store in Beijing.
And now I'm stuck coz there's nothing more I could do without the Play Store.
How did you find the market? And What did you tell them?
Most of the chinese here cannot understand English so how can we tell them?
Please help me out with this.
Thank you.
download orbot.apk(requires root to fully function) or hotspotshield.apk look for them on google (how ironic), use them only when using market(they slow down the internet to some extent, but act as a proxy on your phone)

Hi, do you know if you made something else to your phone? i know that this S3 version from UNICOM uses a different modem that wont allow us to install anyother Samsung build and i was wondering about if in the WHOLE world there was another country that used the same modem so i can install that build in my China/unicom phone. If this is a transparent solution I AM SOOOO DOING IT!

Hello guys!
If you have this kind of issues then the only thing you need to do is:
- Download FASTBOOT files, Google it, it should be 3 files. The size small. Make your own folder called "Android" on C: Drive. Put the files there.
- Unlock the Boot loader, go to your respective forums and find a way to unlock your device's Boot loader.
- Get ClockWorkMod recovery for your device, Google it, go to their website, search for newest version for your device, download.
- Put the .img file onto the "Android" folder.
- Enter Boot loader mode (For HTC it's POWER + Volume Down). Navigate using physical buttons, and Select FASTBOOT option.
- Flash it with CMD on Windows by using this command:
--- cd c:\Android
--- fastboot flash recovery name_of_recovery_you_downloaded.img
--- fastboot erase cache
- Done all that, search for a custom ROM that's already pre-ROOTed and has built-in Kernel to avoid troubles like boot loops.
- Put that ROM onto your SD card, DO NOT EXTRACT THE ZIP.
- Enter Recovery by going into Boot loader mode
- Full Wipe/Factory Reset your phone through Recovery, then erase Cache through Recovery too.
- "Install zip from SD" card through Recovery, select the ROM.zip, select YES. Now wait.
- Voila, Democracy speaks for itself ;D
Thank me if i helped!
