TP2 Basic Questions - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

Hi,
I've just bought a TP2 and reading through the forum I've picked up that the TP2 is customisable.
My questions are basically
-how customisable is the TP2?? i.e. is it only themes n ringtones that can be changed or can anything be changed on the phone??
Also ive read that applications like radio dont come standard on the TP2 need to be added manually.
-how hard is it to do this and does anybody have any tutorials on how to add apps and where can i get them from??
thanks

the device isnt the variable in customization, virtually every aspect of the TP2 is customizable and as the days go by and the devs create more things the options just become greater.
the radio add is simply installing the radio cab file, takes all of 10 seconds. All you really need to do (for the most part) for different app installs is to read if they support your resolution (480x800).

Hi,
Welcome to forums.
Yes there are literaly millions of apps out there for WinMo from any category you can think of, productivity, media players / streamers, games, tools etc etc.
Most apps come in two forms, .cab file extension which can be copied to the memory on the device and run from the file manager, or .exe (the windows normally executable) these are installed on your desktop and the app is then installed to the device the next time you sync it with active sync.
Before getting too in depth, I advise you to read the Wiki, and the first post at the top of this forum. Familiarise yourself with the devices basic functions and where everything in the OS, that way you'll pick things up a lot quicker when reading through posts on the forum.
The entire OS is customisable, skins, pre-installed apps, added functionality (patching missing or poor functionality (NFFP issues) and anything else you can think. What we do here is port newer builds from newer devices to get the latest OS builds and optimisations for our current devices.
Have a good read, you'll understand a lot better.
Cheers,
Beasty

Indeed welcome to the forums.
It seems this is your first windows mobile phone? you can compare it with your windows pc a bit, only it's a bit less complex, though it still is.
On windows you can install every application that is ment for windows. As long as your system meets the system requirements of the software. It's the same with your Touch pro 2.
A lot of software has diffrent versions of their applications, each for a diffrent screen size. This reduces the size of the application (instead of installing the application for all sizes).
There are . CAB files. These are the regular installation files for you phone. Copy them to your phone and run it. (you can upload by bluetooth, but active sync is easier and faster) Then there are .exe files for mobile apps. These you install on you pc while you phone is connected via active sync. Your computer will then install it on your phone.
Now for the customisation part. This is indeed customising the OS. In the (near?) future, there will be a lot of selfmade (cooked) roms available. This goes with a lot of testing, it's the trial and error way of working.
As this is your first WM mobile?, I suggest you wait a while before customizing anything and installing custom roms. I would wait untill there are some stable roms available. Also you need to install HardSPL to make flashing (installing new Roms, and thus new OS versions) less risky. Because flashing and customizing isn't without risk.
I've been doing it quite a while (flashing) and it never went wrong, but there are also people where it did went wrong.

first off thanks beast & quarin when i get paid ill try to donate something to the site.
I'll definatly have a read into the wiki before doing anything to the phone and yes this is my 1st windows mobile so I will just it for a while to get used to it then possible start customising it.
In regards to the apps i can get apart from in this forum are there any other sites where i can download them from??
Also i do have 1 more question but its a just in case kind of question.
Ive bought the HTC sim free, 1 of my main worries is that with my Three(3) network contract SIM. I know I should be able to make calls and send text messages my query is in regards to the internet settings will they automatically be picked up via the SIM card coz when i had my iphone i had to manually put in the address for the APN and im just wondering will i have to do the same??
Thanks

Most likely, the settings will be set automaticly. If not you can set them via Settings (also automaticly). But if you have pre-paid, be carefull when the settings are set. at the moment you open a browser, youtube or other apps that use internet, internet connection will automatic establish. (sorryfor my bad language)

I was targetting the internet costs. They can add up. Don't know you country, but here you can't have internet prepaid without paying a lot of money. So you have too look out (in that case) not to use internet. And it uses internet automaticaly when using a program that's internet related.

HTC Homeplug Weather fix - get your LOCAL weather! [New universal patch uploaded!]

THIS SERVER HAS NOW BEEN DEACTIVATED - See below / my final post
WARNING! The old IP-based/Pocket Hosts method using my server HAS BEEN DEACTIVATED, as I have had to remove the code in question from the direct IP. This means that selecting the custom weather server purely via the HTC home customizing utilities without installing a patched version of the HTC Home DLL, it WILL NOT WORK and you will just get "unable to retrieve data" messages. If this is the case, please uninstall your existing HTC Home plugin, and use one of the ones off the download page.
You can, if necessary, set up your own IP address to base it on, if you can't use my system for some reason, and use the pocket host method that way (requires your own server). Otherwise, please use the cabs below.
NEW! UNIVERSAL PATCH PACKAGE
I've written a universal patcher, so people can now get the HTC Home package they want, and just patch the HTCHome.dll from \WINDOWS. Simply get the package, unzip, drop your HTCHome.dll file in the N2A-Patcher folder, and run the n2a-patcher script inside. It'll magically create you a package! (This won't work for DLLs which people have already patched, you need to use the unmodified original.) This should negate the need for me to create individual packages anymore. Feedback welcome! As a result, I won't be releasing any more complete packages - just install your personal favorite, get the \WINDOWS\HTCHome.dll from your device, drop it in the packager, and let it do it's magic, then install the newly created cab.
Coming soon, if I can figure it out - drop the installer in, and get a patched full installer out! Of course, I have to figure out how to batch extract the cabfile correctly first... *laughs*
I've also just created a DLL to CAB packager (so you can drop your own pre-patched DLL in, and it'll turn it into a ready-to-install cabfile), and a DLL patcher (which just patches the DLL itself, ready for cooking etc - perfect for all you flashers out there!) - all on the download page.
PLEASE DON'T PM ME ABOUT THIS - KEEP IT TO THE THREAD UNLESS I SPECIFICALLY REQUEST A PM OR PM YOU!
Help Request
If anyone has an unpatched Sprint Touch XML file, I could do with a backup copy, for those who corrupt their XML files...
If you've got a Touch, Kaiser/TyTN II or Sprint Touch...
There are specific device DLL replacement packages on the new file download page.
NEW DOWNLOAD AND INSTRUCTION SITE
I've moved all the downloads and instructions to a new page, which will hopefully make it clearer on what people need to download. It also contains full instructions on hexediting the DLL if you wish, and re-signing. I'm not entirely sure if it's more readable or not, but it's certainly more manageable! Feedback welcome. There's some specific overlays now for certain versions of the ROMs too.
FAQ:
Can I install colour customisations to this?
Sure. Take a look around the forum. There's plenty of guides elsewhere.
What does this do?
It reroutes the request to the AccuWeather server to my server instead, which then requests the appropriate data from the AccuWeather server, and translates it into the HTC Weather XML format.
Can I run this via my own server?
Yup. It's running on mine via PHP 5.2.x, using the SimpleXML extension. The code is downloadable from the main download page, and I've even commented it. Once you get it running, you'll need to hexedit the HTCHome.dll file in the same way as described for the ROM chefs. I'd recommend keeping the same length of file for replacement - using directories to pad it out if necessary - it could cause unpredictable results otherwise.
Do I need to run my own server to get my local weather?
Nope, feel free to use mine.
Your server isn't working!
Oops. It's a rarity, but occasionally network outages happen. The server won't be disappearing anytime soon though without any warning! I'm sorry to say that I'll be taking the server down for this shortly as I'm wrapping up my web hosting business and transferring it to another company, but quite a few other people seem to have hosted a copy if people still need it. I hope it's been of use over the years everyone!
Why have you done this?
It was really annoying me that I could only get the weather for a city 25 miles away, that had nothing to do with mine.
Can you make me an XML file for such-a-place?
No, I've done enough already, and it's documented fairly heavily above. If you can't follow instructions, give up and stop trying to hack your phone. I'm not here to hold your hand. I'll help fix bugs and obvious issues, but if you can't edit a textfile, you're on your own.
Release Notes
I've stripped most local data from the return info apart from the town/city and country, but the HTC plugin seems to ignore that anyway. Works for all international locations I've tested. I welcome feedback on anything that's not working though, and I'll try to get it nailed pretty quickly. As said above, also works on zip codes, which will make it easier for our US friends on here.
New release fixes countries that weren't in the list, by removing the country checks altogether - I'm confident it'll "just work" - in theory Report bugs in the usual way.
Known Issues
The WM5 version will NOT update over GPRS/3G, unless you are using an AKU3.3 ROM. WM5 Weather update over GPRS has been proven with Wizard AKU3.3 (like the T-Mobile or WM5SEr5). Other devices/ROM's still to be confirmed.
The temperature in Farhenheit can occasionally be a degree or two out, as I convert from the Celsius scale. To get both readings would mean two calls to the server, which would be more work and bandwidth for my server. I'm sure you can live with a degree out occasionally.
Kudos
Thanks PAPPL for the info on signing files, Schen for his great work on the plugin, and to all those who contributed to getting these plugins (and getting them working!) in the first place!
Enjoy!
As I've taken the server down, I've attached all the relevant files to this post. If someone does want to provide somewhere to point the weather.not2advanced.com domain to, I still own the domain and can add the appropriate A address to it for the purpose if they want to continue hosting for the many users that still seem to be using this plugin. Sorry I had to take it down, but I no longer run the hosting operation this was being held on, and it can be a bit heavy on resources at times.
- Rick
Wow, sounds like a lot of work went into this.
Do you think it would be possible, using this framework, to pull data from the NWS website instead of Accuweather?
Theroetically, I could, providing they set up an appropriate XML feed. However, I can only do one such setup per IP address (and the IP addresses I have are somewhat limited), but if someone wanted to set it up, I've no doubt it'd be possible. However, it wouldn't be trivial - I've had to manually grab bits of data from the XML and process it into the format the home plugin expects. As a UK resident, the NWS isn't huge amounts of use to me
On a more technical note though, it'd require a similar format - at least 5 days in advance for a particular area, and the exact parameters (or something that can be adjusted / mangled / processed into the exact parameters) that the plugin needs. (Take a look at the code in the zipfile if you want to see how much of a pain in the neck THAT was!) Adapting it would also need a complete conversion matrix, or a hacky method using (say) the RSS feed ID for the BBC, or however the NWS does it.
Will this work for cingular/att customer?
If it works already for the major cities, then it'll work the same way, but with more localised weather available.
If you're having trouble with the normal weather plugin setup though, you may still have trouble. Then again, it might work! I've no idea. Try it and find out

HTC Homeplug Weather
Hello,
Thanks for sharing your great work. (I am french so sorry for my poor english)
However, I working on HTC Homeplug Weather because it wont let me download weather forecast when I am using 3G connection.
It works great when I an using wifi connection so I think it is coming from the proxy of vodaphone France (SFR) wich is blocking the access. So I was wondering if I will be able to connect to your server ? (for the moment it is not working) or redirecting the plugin to my tunnel...
Second is there a way to be sure that htc weather plugin is trying to connect to htc.accuweather.com and not to another web site.
Thanks in advance
A french guy wich is also living in a small city and wishto have his weather forecast ;-)

Well, if it's the HTC accuweather site specifically blocked, then it will help you. If it's generically blocking sites, then it won't.
Re a tunnel - depends what you mean by it.
The HTC home plugin *always* tries to connect to htc.accuweather.com - hence the host file change, which diverts it to my server instead, which provides the correct data. (NO LONGER APPLIES WITH NEW PLUGINS!)
However, if it's still not working with the hosts file modification (may require soft reset, not sure!), then I'm afraid there's not a lot I can do, unless you can tunnel it as you said, but it depends on what you're using to tunnel.

Reload pocket hosts - it should look something like the attached thumbnail. If it does, try a soft reset. However, if it's still refusing point blank, it's highly possible you're going via a proxy, and that is handling the DNS lookups. To bypass that will require a hack to the HTC plugin itself. I can set it up server side for it (which was going to be my initial approach!), but it'll need an appropriate hostname hacking into the binary. I'll see what I can do on that score tomorrow, both on the home plugin front and the server-side setup.

I suggest using Total Commander - you can remove the read-only flag from there, and even edit it inside it. Works beautifully.
I use the Total Com, too. But when I open the file the Internet Explorer opens and displays the xml file. I tried to remove the flag but he didnt adopt it. So I looked at the attributes again and nothing has changed.

I'm assuming that's after you've gone to the file properties. You should be able to unclick "Read-only" and "System" on it.
There's quite a bit of information on doing this scattered around the forums. Is it cooked into your ROM? (It'll have a tickbox by the "In ROM" box if that's the case.) But you want to clear the Read Only and System attributes from the file properties if you can, THEN edit it.
More information on this thread.

Its in the ROM.
There's your problem. I suggest copying it somewhere else on the device, editing it, and copying it back, but it may have issues doing it.
If you can't copy it back, apparently Resco Explorer is able to do it.

WISH LIST - Post here

Let's post here the features we'd like to have by default in our WM6 rom.
Just to start mine:
1) Ability to print every printable file, by BT or WIFI or Active Sync, directly from Trinity, either on a lan printer and on a shared printer of a lan pc.
2) To have a shared folder on the device, accessible from the pc in lan, just to drag&drop files, a behavior like a laptop..
3) A working Voip program, with the option to store at least 2-3 sip accounts, and MAINLY with the audio working on the earphone, and not on the external speakerphone.

well xmas is just arround the corner!!!
Wish u luck
The sarcasm is just dripping off this topic, you can smell it, lol
Mate, there are some things that just can't be done with a WM6 device, we have to face it.
Someone asked for Mac OSx to be put on the trinity a few weeks back, when told it wasnt possible, he said "Nothing is impossible ,try and try"
Then someone wanted a password screen on his bootloader, when told that wasn't possible, he said "where there is a will there will always be a way"
They are both very stupid and don't understand a thing about technology, I pity them, I see this thread going the same way.
Best of luck getting what you want for Xmas by the way I'm looking forward to getting a wooly jumper again, lol!
Well I think wish list is a good idea, it shows the demand people needed that can help inventors/developers to understand and try to meet people's need. Some people will pay a lot of money for their demand and this can turn out to be a good business too!!!
As for my wishlist...
1. A pda phone that has widest possible screen, but also the slimmest possible, with all the ability of the up to date settings (qwerty keyboard,gps,3.5g, bluetooth, wifi, multi-touchscreen and etc)
2. A very good battery life on the phone (that can run 3.5g line for at days without charging, maybe?)
2. A good hardware-software performance that can maybe helps to get rid of the need of a computer while on the road/business trip.
That's all, cheers!!!

It's a very good idea to think about a "printer plug-in" for HTC P3600. All old hp ipaqs with windows mobile 2002/2003 version used to have this. I don't see why people criticize so much. There are more useless threads than this(asking for a solution without searching for example and repeating it for 1000 times). This is a good thread to express someone's demands. May/may not be rom cookers can have a different point of view.
I don't know what rom you have , but you've got already shared folders on BT or on wifi(network shared).
Ooopppsss
Didn't realize that the wishlist is about the wishlist for a ROM cooking, as I saw the thread title is too general, therefore I just put the general wishlist.
However, still not a bad idea to start for a wishlist thread though, as if we hope that it will be done and shows what we desire rather than asking someone to do it for us. Furthermore, wishlist is not asking directly from people to develop ROM for you, but showing a list from a lot of people that can help cookers to cook a suitable ROM that meet everyone's needs.
Cheers!!!
Best idea if it is considered !
1 - have a auto config to use trinity with the freephonie
2 - have a video conferencing/calling program
3 - have a OCR decryptor to export a photo in text
4 -...
I would like to have in HTC Home, the number of incoming sms-calls-mail coloured like red when u get something, just to distinguish easily when u have received something new.
And I'd like if in zoom sms the time of the received sms is shown ,as well as the number of the sender, and to have a reset of the counter of missed calls when u press the zoomsms key of lost calls (it can reset the sms counter in htc home, but not the missed calls one).

UK Good Beer Guide - mobile

Hi,
I know this is a long shot, but someone more knowledgeable than me might know the answer.
I am keen to use the mobile version of the UK Good Beer Guide Mobile Good Beer Guide. In the FAQs available from the links from the attached page, it says that touch screen and WM phones aren't yet supported, but mysteriously implies that it might be possible to get it working.
Regrettably, the application is not officially supported on the following phones, however a version of the application may still be available:
* Apple iPhone
* Windows Mobile
* Touch screen phones
* Phones released before 2006
* Phones with no internet browser

I have installed it, the phone recognised the Java files and compiled them. The application shows in the Java link on the programs page, but only shows a white screen when it is started. I was hoping someone could shed some light on the subject. The zip folder contains a .jar and .jad file. He are a couple of links to the downloads SonyEricsson C905 and Samsung GT S5603 as examples of the files.
Is an emulator needed or a certain version of Java?
Cheers.
Wonder why they do it as a mobile application rather than just subscription access to the server the data resides on?
I have the pubs stored in Memory Map and Copilot...don't really need things like tasting notes when I'm somewhere different...just need to know where there is real ale
(given how few phones appear to be supported it would be far easier to say it works on the following: 1, 2 and 3 rather than list hundreds of phones that it won't work on!)

I have bought the POIs for TomTom, but the mobile version would be better than dragging the paperbook around giving you back ache . I'm also a bit of a real ale geek .

You're not wrong
Only a month until the next (even more bloated?) book comes out. Have e-mailed them about the lack of phone support in the hope they'll sort it out before then (and maybe do native poi files for other satnav/mapping as they have been promising for over a year).......I'm not holding my breath

[Q&A]Android Questions

Ok there are a lot of questions about Android in a lot of different threads scattered about the forum so I thought I would make this topic.
I've had my G1 for 14 months now, in that time I've seen the upgrade from 1.1 to 1.5 to 1.6. I've rooted my device, installed a whole load of Cyanogen Roms, Hero Roms and Super D Roms. I've even installed Debain on my system.
If anyone has any questions about Android please use this thread and I'll do my best to answer them.
How many applications do you usually find yourself running at once and how much effect does it have on battery life in the real world?
Many. Android doesn't close applications it keeps them in the memory until they need to be removed (ie when more memory is needed).
On the G1 I run anything up to about 20 applications at the same time. It's never effected performance and battery life is fine. You generally find you have to charge the phone at the end of the day after heavy usage but the G1 is known for having poor battery life.
Of course you can use Task Managers etc to increase your battery life but it's not really necessary like certain articles/websites like to make out. I get around 15 hours life on my G1 and that's with sending around on average 20 texts a day, a few phone calls, some game time, surfing the net about an hour a day and going on facebook/twitter regularly over about 4 hours a day (basically anytime I'm in a lecture). I also get 2 hours of music playback via AD2P bluetooth headphones.
I've read about people saying that there is a limit to the amount of apps you can install because everything has to be saved to the ROM. (Assuming you don't root it and install it to the SD card). Do you know if this is true?
what are the advantages n disadvantages of android over the winmo ??

Yes this is true however the Desire has 512mb of space for you to store apps. I've got a 800mb partition on my G1 for Apps2SD and I have around 200 apps installed lol with no problems so 512mb will probably hold quite a few apps.
They're working on getting apps installed to the SD card in the next android release.

That's a broad question, maybe you can be more specific?
Hey brummiesteven, thanks for creating this for Android noobs like me! I've been using WinMo for quite some time. Never played with Android until just a few weeks ago when I tried running Android on my Touch Pro2.
Enough history, on to my questions...
1. Is there a native file explorer? If not, I suppose there are 3rd-party ones. Any one in particular that is considered the file explorer? (The equivalent of Resco Explorer or Total Commander in WinMo?)
2. I read in that there's no native Office doc (ie, Word, Excel, etc) editor. There's only a viewer. Again, I suppose there are 3rd-party ones. Recommendations? Does it work as well as the native one in WinMo?
I guess that's it. These are my only concerns about jumping ship to Android. Everything else, I'm going to have a blast figuring out on my own...

1. No native file explorer, I think Astro is generally seen as the best file exporer:
http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.metago.astro/
2. Again no native Office. There are quite a few office suites, I don't know which is the best as I have no use for one. Here's one of them though:
http://www.androffice.com/
It will be worth noting that there probably will be a google docs app soon. And you can edit google docs already on android via docs.google.com. There's also a program called GDocs that syncs all your google documents to your handset.
I think the reason why there's no "Native" options for these is because Initially "Stock Android" is aimed at the average customer, they wanted to get the balance right for non tech savy people who just want a phone with apps but also allow the possibility and expansion of turning it into something extremely powerful for someone of the more tech savvy type.

umm thought you might say that right let me think
- i've been mainly using symbian and winmo devices for the past years and there was some issues with stability and lag etc. on my old n95 8gb i used to get slow downs when ie had lots of apps installed does that happen on android? lags etc?
- are there any custom roms tweaks or in general droid doesnt really require much work to make it better?
- what about security of droids? as its an open source software it might be easily hacked, accessed by 3rd party users?
thats it so far i probably forgot about other more important things
well thanks anyway

1. Put it this way, I've never experienced any slowdown on my G1 and it has like maybe a 3rd of the spec of the Desire? It is a fast operating system, wont be slowed down by installing a lot of apps but might by by having a lot of apps open but I highly doubt this would ever be a problem on the Desire (as it isn't on my G1).
2. Yes there are custom roms, mostly of different builds. For example the HTC Hero doesn't officialy have 2.1 released but there are already a few 2.1 roms for it on XDA. There will always be a way for devs to increase speed on here... even if it isn't needed speed can always be increased .
3. The only security flaw you would have is if you rooted it, this enables the root account and on a linux system the root account can do things like access system files. Having said this, if you do root the phone, the phone will ask you before it permits anything (program etc) root access. I've never heard of anyone having their phone hacked or anything like that.
I have had my G1 since it came out. Also, I rooted it as soon as that was possible. I have tried/installed over 500 apps and normally have over 100 installed at any given time. I have never had any issue with hacking or security.
That having been said! Recently, I read on an Android site where a group of individuals made an app as an experiment to see if they could access a users data. I believe it was a weather app. A majority of the users (if I remember correctly) didn't read the access rights of the weather app - as it said in the access rights it would have access to the users contacts/data. The app was able to upload user's data/contacts from those who installed the app.
So, MAKE sure you always read any applications access rights prior to installing an application. If the app is requesting access to information within your device that are NOT related to the apps functions - don't install it!
If you do that one thing - you should have nothing to worry about!
@brummiesteven - Didn't mean to highjack your thread. This is a great service you are providing for the new Androidians! Just wanted to remind them (all users) to read those app access rights before installing an application.
Hijacking? Lol don't be silly the more the better
Thanks for answering these questions. This next one is a bit more speculative....
given that winmo 6.5.x is probably going to be the last iteration before WP7S, what are the chances that some kind of emulator will be built to run legacy winmo apps on Android?
would this even be possible?
Hi Steven,
great service
One thing I really liked about my Blackberry, was the ability of customization regarding profiles and the notifications connected to it.
Is it possible to create profiles in Android, like 'Silent', 'Vibrate Only' and maybe one for the office where ringtones and notifications are very silent to avoid waking everyone up at the office
By the way, I recently stumbled over an application called cVolume that seems to enable some customization in that regard.
Is it possible to assign different ringtones for messages, mails, event notifications etc.?
(An example of what I dislike: I actually use a Palm Pre and the launch firmware didn't allow much customization. All notifications (except event reminders), no matter whether new mail, new textmessage used the same ringtone, which also couldn't be changed. That changed thankfully with a later firmware. Profiles are still not supported, you can just switch between 'ringtones on' or 'shut up/vibrate only'. --> Having used a Blackberry before, I felt kinda castrated with that few options of notification-settings )
Thx & Greetz,
69Mws
Sorry, no time to read which questions you have answered! I just copy/past my questions from another thread:
I can not call myself a WinMo veteran, since I have been using the HD2 for only 2,5 months. But the fact that it is already a dead device because of the Developers leaving to 7 Series(Adobe just stopped making flash for it, while they were very close to finishing it) makes me sad. If on 1 April there is still no word on the future of the HD2, I am selling it and getting a Desire.
A few questions to Android users!
How is the Android Market? How many apps? All useable by Desire, or is the divercity of the Android devices making the quality suffer? And only instal to internal memory right?
General Android OS: easy to use? Eye candy? Touch optimized?
Android browser: good or not? Is there Opera browser for Android?
Does HTC Sense work well with Android? Does it become 'one', or stay 2 different things like Sense and WinMo?
What should I know more about Android? What do you Android users think are the bad things about the OS and hope to see changed in the future updates?
I know it is a lot I am asking, but I am making a right decision this time so I need to be informed.
Kind regards

I'm no Android user yet. But I have played with the emulator running on my Touch Pro2. So I can help answer a couple of your questions.
1. Android Market is much more extensive than Windows Marketplace. Remember, it's not the quantity but quality of apps that matters. And quality there appears to be much more quality apps than WinMo. Perhaps veteran Android users can chime in regarding usability by the Desire and installation location.
2. The Android OS is so much more pretty than WinMo. There are fade in/out animations when opening/closing windows. Everything is finger-friendly. The slide-down notifications bar is extremely handy. The ability to fully customize your home screens with shortcuts and widgets is just great.
3. The Android browser is much better than Opera Mobile on WinMo. I think there's Opera Mini in the Android Marketplace. But really, I don't think there's any reason to not use the default browser. It's renders fast and accurately. I can even access my internet banking site which doesn't work on WinMo or iPhone OS.
4. There's plenty of videos of Sense on Android. Check those out and see for yourself. Personally, I think it's great. Completely different than Sense on WinMo. Sense on WinMo is just a Today-screen plugin and enlarged menus. Sense on Android includes the HTC widgets and Leap among other goodies.
5. This is something I want to know too. Most of us know about what's bad about the iPhone OS and WinMo. But what's bad about Android that you'd want changed?
does Android require soft/hard reset every now and then like those damn M$ Windows Phones ?
I asked these in a different section, but thought I would see what Answers I get here, I know some have been answered before.
1. If / when the Desire gets rooted, will the device be permanently rooted or will official updates from HTC "un-root" it?
So hypothetically, I get a Desire and it is rooted, and HTC releases Android 3.0 (for example), would I be able to upgrade to the newer software or would I have to use a "dev" update?
2. Since the hardware between the 2 phones is very similar, what is the chances of current Nexus One modded ROMs (cyanogen, enmother etc) working on a rooted Desire?
3. I imagine the community will be working on rooting the Desire so it can port the shipping version of Sense UI to the Nexus One?

There's no option for this initially but the system does allow you to assign different notification tones to different events, eg Email and SMS.
There will be apps that allow you to have "profiles". There's even an app called Locale which is pretty much an automatic profiler, will switch your settings dependant on the time, your location etc. For example, if I'm at Uni it automatically switches my phone to silent for all notifications and vibration only.

[Q] Bluetooth woes

Hi ,
I am a fairley new user of the HD7 after coming from a n900 and a Hd2.
I struggling to like the HD7 to be honest. I thought the N900 was a pain and again this HD7 is in the same league.
Why is nothing simple? I had a nightmare with contacts ,office docs .......even transfering epub files. I now want to bluetooth a lot of pictures over and yes I am struggling. I really dont want to give up on this phone..I love the speed and smoothness, but I want it to do the simple things as well. I cant even get my HD2 to recognised the HD7 ,all it comes upp with is there is no services i can use.
So is there a work around for my blue tooth problem is there one planned ........
Many thanks.
I really wish illiterate people wouldn't buy phones. It's all over this forum, the internet, the phone manual that you can't bluetooth pictures/files with this phone yet. You need to transfer the pictures to your computer and move them over through Zune. I honestly don't know what the struggle is there, or with office docs, as the Office integration is flawless...

To actually answer your questions...
Level 0:
Read this thread and all other stickies in the WP7 subforums before you ask more questions. The old people here will be a lot less hostile.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=816501
Level 1:
To get partial access to the filesystem through windows explorer with zune sync (similar instructions in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=844396 ). This will at least let you get epub files on.
•When the registry editor opens, drill down to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB
•Press Control+F to display the registry search dialog
•In Find What, type zunedriver -- uncheck data box to make searching faster, then click Find Next
•Regedit will jump to the correct key -- now you need to click to the Device Parameters key above it
•In the right pane, double-click ShowInShell and change its value from 0 to 1
•In the right pane, double-click PortableDeviceNameSpaceExcludeFromShell and change its value from 1 to 0
•In the right pane, double-click EnableLegacySupport from 0 to 1

Level 2: install chevron to begin sideloading apps and you can do things like use total commander, which gives you bluetooth file transfers and full filesystem access. I can't do this (I have an LG phone, so totalcommander won't work yet).
thanks is there a link for chevron and total commander thanks.
There is no way you've had time to complete even level 0.

the Windows Phone 7 site is not confusing, neither is the big sticky at the top of this forum. The possibility of this being anybody's first forum ever visited are slim.
Teaching a 'newbie' how to edit the registry to access the file system is worlds more complicated than drag and drop from Zune...
thanks for the help people.......done level 1 ok havent read level 0 call me inpatiant sorry....anyway thanks everyone.
ok phone is now unlocked done some reading and now have a better understanding............all I need now is the total commander file........cant find it any where. Any help will be good.
Many thanks
come on guys help me out someone must know a link for total commander....the only ones I can find are .cab files.......struggling to find a .XAP
Please guys be kind.
Many thanks
You see what I mean? afaik there isn't a total commander for WP7, nor should there be... I believe TouchXperience is what you're looking for...
the reason I asked for total commander was it was suggested I could bluetooth pictures with it in a previous reply.....will i be able to do this with this? If not is there a hack or app to allow me to do this?
Anyway,
Many thanks
WP7 currently does not Bluetooth files, no matter which App you use. Bluetooth is there mainly for use with Headsets atm. Who knows what NoDo may bring though....

My gripe isn't with you mainly, I was just trying to solidify my point of how much more difficult it is to try and have users use homebrew solutions. I personally recommend Zune for any and all transfers.
