[Q] How to take back up of exciting ROM

HI everyone,
Can any one explain how to take backup of ROM with installed applications before fashing the new ROM. I am using 2.3.3 with hardly 50 apps. Every time when I flash the ROM I should download all the apps from begining. Please help me by providing the solution.

hey dude installl cwm to flash zip files or roms of what ever you like... and for your aps you may like to checkout Titanium Pro backup google it or buy it from market.
and titanim pro backup will also help you in linking the apps with market and also the paid ones if you have purchased it from the same google account..

Is your phone rooted ? If so, then it's easy, use TitaniumBackup to backup all your apps.
If you don't have permanent root (i.e. by using the HTCdev bootloader unlock tool and then rooting, or by using the XTC Clip device and rooting), then you can get temporary root and still do the backup/restore that way. Just with temp root you will have to re-do the rooting after a reboot.

Easiest way is to use CLockwork Mod and create a nandroid of your current Rom, then when you try other roms and decide to go back to previous Rom, you just use cwm and select restore.
Also use Titanium Backup as suggested earlier.

Thanks, Yesterday I have I have installed CM7 from 2.3.3 even I have taken back up with Titanium back up. Now I have installed Titanium backup in cm7. Now please guide me how to install my previous apps .

Transfer exact copy of current rom to new phone

Hi, I searched and I'm sure it's already been answered but I can't seem to find my exact answer. Here's the question:
I have a rooted galaxy s3 that has a cracked screen, I got a replacement galaxy s3 that I am going to root soon...
What I need to do is make an exact copy of my rom on my cracked phone and then install it on the new phone. I want to keep all my settings, contacts, wallpaper, programs etc... exactly the same.
What is the easiest way to do this?
My recovery is CWM 5.5.. Thanks in advance.

Make a nandroid backup of the broken phone. Copy it to a pc. As long as the new device is the same you can just copy the backup to the new phone and flash using the same recovery you used on the broken phone

Thank you so much for the fast reply, I went to rom manager and it had me update to ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.1.2 I am looking for how to make a nandroid but all I see is "backup" after performing backup, I can't seem to find the new rom. no files seem big enough to have the entire rom in them. Where would I find said backup?

Scroll to the bottom of ROM Manager and choose to install an earlier version of CWM. Choose 5.5 (or whatever version you used on the current phone) flash that and it should recognize the backup you created on the first phone.

I meant I updated on the old cracked phone... is "backup to SD card" going to work? So, boot to the new CMW, "backup to sd", put SD card in new phone, boot to CMW, and restore from backup and I'll have exact carbon copy of old phone? Thanks again.

yeah, put the earlier version of CWM on the cracked phone and do a nandroid to the SD card. Install the same version of CWM on the new phone, put in the SD card with the nandroid from the cracked phone into the new phone, boot into recovery with the older version of CWM installed and restore the nandroid from the cracked phone. You should then be good to go.

[Q] Question about installing a custom rom

Okay my question is:
Is it possible to go from an unrooted phone with the whole software stock to a custom ROM, while keeping your data (apps, appdata, settings, sms, etc.)? If yes, how?
I'm on software version HTC WWE Europe 3.12.405.1, and I stored all my apps and photos etc on my SD-card.
I already know that the easyest way to instal another bootloader (CWM) is the AAHK. I downloaded it. But it will perform a downgrade resulting in loss of data.
Also while flashing a ROM you must reset the phone.
What I don't understand is this: you don't need to reset the SD-card, but the new ROM won't recognise the apps on your SD-card, so do you need to delete all those files then?
I know that what I'm probably asking a very nooby question, but I really hope that somebody can help me out here.

Take a look at this thread. Someone else had similar questions recently.
If by apps on the sdcard you mean apps you backed up with GoBackup or MyBackup or something similar, you will need to reinstall that backup app from the Play Store and use that app to restore your apps from the sdcard. If you mean with apps2sd, they're usually saved in a folder in the sdcard called .android_secure, and I know that 4ext recovery (and maybe others) wipes that folder when a new ROM is flashed. If the recovery doesn't, I would guess that it's wise to wipe it yourself.

I'm assuming you are taking about the option that Android gives you to move apps to sd. I don't expect you to know this yet, since you haven't rooted yet, but before installing any ROM, you should do a full wipe. On my recovery, which is 4ext (and which I highly recommend you use after AAHK installs CWM recovery), it automatically wipes .android_secure (where the apps2sd are saved) in the course of a full wipe. If you choose another recovery, and it does not do so, I would recommend that you delete it yourself.

Not quite sure what you are asking. If you are talking about just the apk file, there shouldn't be any problems. No need to format the sd card.

OOw, I think I get it now! The apps are stored in .android_secure and not in another place in the SD-card. I already backed up my contacts, smses etc. So I guess there's no way to keep your appdata? Because you need root for that and for root you need to downgrade, which resets the phone?

Just to clarify, the .android_secure folder is for apps moved to the sd using the Android OS's apps2sd capability. If you're referring to another method (like Titanium Backup or GoBackup or something), that's different. Those backup apps can back up your apps, but not app data, to the sdcard; you would then reinstall them using the same backup app once the new ROM is installed.
If you need to downgrade to root, I don't know of a method to keep your app data, since the downgrade would wipe the OS before you had the root capability necessary to back up app data. There might be one, but I don't know of one.

OK, nice! Now I'm rooted and downgraded. However, now I want to install 4ext Recovery. So I downloaded the 4extRecoveryUpdater.apk from their website. But my phone won't open and install it. When I click on it in downloads it just says "Can't open this file".
Please help?!!?!

Make sure "install from unknown sources" is checked in Settings -> Security. Try opening it from another application, like a file manager.

Oh well.. this sucks! Just one day after I rooted and lost all my data, a new version of Titanium Backup comes out that can back-up app-data without root

ICS update without full wipe

Hi,
excuse, my english is very rusty.
I've IceColdSandwich v 8.6-AOKP on my DHD.
Unfortunately my Camera app doesn't work.
Because of that, I would update to v.8.8, but I've configured my home screen very good for me.
Therefore I want to keep this configuration. So, I don't wanna lose this configuration of the home screens.
Is it possible to jump to v8.8 without full wipe?
If so, what steps do I have to?

Yes, you can dirty flash the 8.8 ICECOLD. ("dirty" means without wipe.. so just flash.if you have a custom rom my guess is you know how to)
But I'd recommend to do a backup for any case. And than try to flash the 8.8. (again, I guess you know how, if not , ask.)
You can also perform a system backup with titanium\mybackup , but its not advices.
But again perform a NAND backup . If something will go wrong you'll have a working and configured version .

A NAND backup is performed from recovery and takes a single backup of the whole system. If something goes wrong, you can restore the NAND backup and you will be back to exactly the same point you were at when you took the backup. If you try 8.8 and it doesn't work, just restore the backup and you'll be back on 8.6.
A backup with titanium backs up apps and settings but runs from the ROM itself. If you are performing system changes then titanium may not be able to restore the necessary settings, so you may be stuck with the problem.

It means, that you should do a backup in your recovery. (You should always have one, because if something goes wrong, you can always restore this backup from your recovery).
I have used Titanium backup for a complete restore aswell.
But you should make sure, that your ROM is ok with this. ( I think there are ROMS, that don´t recommend this).
If you just switch the Version of the Rom, Titanium backup should work.
I did a complete wipe and restored with TB and it worked.

It might be, but NAND is for sure. and it brings your rom to the point as you left it.
1. go to recovery and do a backup.
2. dirty flash the 8.8 .
if everything all right your ok.
if anything going wrong at any point and you dont like it go to 3
3. flash the new rom with full wipe.
4.restore settings with titanium
everything ok ? huuura .somthing wrong ? go to 5
5.restore the back up.

Exactly.
It is saved in your Clockworkmod file on the SD.
You can simply choose it from your recovery and install it again. (You should also consider switching to 4ext recovery, but i think clockwork does the job as well)

yes, ClockworkMOD Recovery menu -> backup and restore -> backup?

but you dont need it. when you'll go to restore it from the same place in recovery, in any point it will show it as it is.
And it back up all the rom exactly as it is. 1 to 1.

I like 4ext more than CWM. You can install it by getting the app either from the 4ext site or buying it from the Play Store; the app lets you flash the recovery.
The backup is saved in the sdcard in the clockworkmod folder. I recommend, though, that you keep the backup. If you ever have problems with your current setup, you can restore it. I always back up before flashing anything.

I'm done and it all works wonderfully.
Also the camera works very well now.
I love dirty flashing!!!

Congratulations! Be aware that, as a courtesy to the developer, don't report bugs in a dirty flash; if you have bugs in a dirty flash, do a clean flash and see if the bug is there, and only if it is should you report the bug.

Disappearing CWM backups?

Hello all, using a Bell Sgh-i747m here. Recently, I rooted and did a nandroid with cwm backup of my stock rom, and installed the m2 cm10.1 and the newest gapps. I made sure to have a backup, but mysteriously, it has disappeared! Does anyone know if it could've changed folders? Or was it completely deleted?

Ive never heard of any being deleted. Did you do any kind of wipe when you flashed your ROM? I dont use CWM so not sure but does it store your Nan's to internal or external?

Not sure if I am reading that right or not but I am thinking that you may need to update your CWR version to support the new 4.2 file structure. Can you get into a File Explorer and go to /storage/emulated/0/Clockwork/backup/ or /storage/sdcard1/Clockwork/backup and see of they are in there? It has been a long time since I used CWR so I am not sure if they are kept on the internal or external.
My guess is that they are still there, however your CWR version can't read them. Best way to check is to look with a file explorer like I mentioned above.

Woody is correct in saying you need to look in the "0" first. also /data/media/clockworkmod or /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup. copy your cmw backup from "sdcard 0" (or wherever) to sdcard
as far as recovery versions, cwm is simply an installer. if it was not a recent enough version, you would have got an error 7 and it wouldnt even have flashed the rom. since you have flashed a 4.2 rom, you and cwm now need to know where to look for the files new locations. grab root explorer if you dont have it yet.
