Question about radio upgrading from GB to ics - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Quick question. I searched and doing a thread but no answer listed. Question is, if I flash an ICS ROM and ICS radio then decide I want to go back to GB can I just restore my nandroid or do I need to flash a GB radio again prior to nandroid restore? Aside from ICS radio and ROM anything else I need to do to flash an ICS ROM coming from GB? Thanks in advance for answers!!

Radios will work on either os as long as the rils have been removed. Restoring your nandroid will take it back to exactly how you backed up, same Rom, radio(i believe), etc. I'm thinking if you flash a Rom over a radio it automatically voids whatever rils that came with the radio. So you should be able to flash back to gb without changing radios. Edit: Not sure on that though
Also newest radios aren't necessarily best, radios effect everyone differently depending on location and Samsung's oh so strict quality consistency.

Thanks for the reply...so with that said how do I remove the RIL files from a radio?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

Just remove the system folder from the radio zip because it just contains the rils files, Which you can do with root explorer or a similar explorer. Or just download radios with rils removed.

I have tried about every Rom based on the new gingerbread leak and for some reason 3g won't work I always have to use WiFi. Please help

I'd suggest ruu then reprovision data services. I believe you can flash the leak without wiping userdata.
Although data settings are in the nv items, it may be a Rom issue.

After flashing the roms, did you go into the settings menu to update your profile? Are you using the default kernels?

Try this: Do you have a nandroid backup of a previous setup in which 3G worked? If so, nandroid back to it and double check. If 3G works, great. Now, if you still want to try one of the Gingersense leaks, download the one from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035438 and place it on your SD card. Now go into recovery, wipe EVERYTHING except the SD card itself and then flash the rom. Hopefully, it'll do well for you.

[Q] Radio Question

Fairly new to the whole rooting game and I was just wondering if clearing my cache, doing the factory reset, and wiping dalvik cache sets my radio back to normal. I currently have Darkside Evolution Beta 3 and am looking to try some other stuff out and don't want to risk screwing something up if I still have the radio provided on the Darkside xda thread.
Thanks!
Pretty sure your radio only changes when you flash another radio. I've been wrong before though

Above post is correct radio wont change unless you flash a new radio...flashing a rom will not change your radio thats why some roms state to flash a certin radio before the rom.
So no worries if wiping cache or dalvik cache.
Are some radios not compatible with certain roms and could I brick my phone if they don't match? And by any chance does anybody have a link to the stock rom?

Try the Telus Radio. T989D Radio. I have no idea why this is the only radio that works for me for AOKP even though I have the T-Mobile phone.

Not yet, but I'm gonna assume it'll work seeing as to how those were the only roms I was having trouble getting data on.

Just to make sure, you are on the t989 or the t989d? Also, which radio did you use? TLLE4?

Just to confirm. Wasn't getting any data on CM9 with T-Mo radios. Flashed the Telus T989D TLLE4 and voila data. Thanks for this informative thread. Wondering why some people with T-Mo radios have working data and we need to flash Telus ones?

Now since data is working for you. But you're not comfortable since you flashed the Telus radio. Flash the Modded UVLE1 Radio (T-Mobile Radio) from TDJs thread(Darkside Evolution) here. He removed the RILs from that radio.

I've tried both the LE and LC radios. No luck with either. Definitely not comfortable with a Telus radio though you got that right.
EDIT: Got T-Mo LC8 modified radio to work (RILs removed). What I did was just booted into recovery and didn't wipe anything. Then just simply flashed the LC8 radio zip file and rebooted and had data. So for anyone having data trouble and you are currently running CM9 with Telus radio:
Boot into recovery
Don't wipe ANYTHING
Flash the T-Mo radio and reboot
That's all I did and data is working now. I did not test the LE radio just T-Mo LC. Hope this helps people. Please post the results you guys get from trying this.

Best way to upgrade?

I currently have the T-Mobile version with the 4.1.1 stock rom with a modified framework and root but stock recovery as well.
The phone don't seem to find the update available to get 4.1.2
What would be the best way to upgrade to the newer version?
Where can I get a backup of the recovery for that newer version.
Firmware thread stickied in development. Link in my sig.

Just flash the new root66 file then I assume?
If I recall correctly that should update and not lose data right?
Thank you
Correct. But still back up your stuff. Things do happen sometimes.

Very true.
Thank you for the advice.

Andriod version vs modem vs rom

I am still on android version 4.1.2, with a non stock modem running cwm recovery and clean rom 4.8.
My question is do I need to mess with my modem before flashing clean rom 5.0?
Do I have to worry about my Android version if I wish to flash pac man rom thats 4.3?
Sorry for being a newb!

You don't have to mess with your modem when you flash any rom.
Thanks! So if I flash clean rom 5.0 ill keep the modem I flashed? Some roms contain modems?

As Ranger stated....your rom will not be touched unless you choose to change it..
Cleanrom does not contain a modem.bin.....g
Ive been having problems with my modem which is why ive changed it. Its mainly when im connected to wifi but not always, it says I also have 4g but I cannot make/receive calls or texts.
So simplest way to change it would be to select a rom that has a built in modem?
Thanks again
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using xda app-developers app
4G is the data side of the connection. The sms and voice goes through the GPRS connection. They are not related. It sounds like a location problem or antenna problem.
Just changing the modem is easy - download and flash.
Does your sim work correctly in another phone?
Ive tried variois modems to no avail. I cannot test my sim bc I don't have another phone to test it with.
Ive decided to unroot and reset counter and return to stock so I can bring it to an at&t store. I did part of the process last night but I think I did it backwards.

Thanks

I can't offer a link. . . when you do these things to your phone you void your warranty.
I'm sure I will get flamed for being old fashioned or called a douchebag, but everyone is warned about this.
