Selling T989 and getting a Galaxy Nexus a good idea? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So the Nexus was dropped to 350. T989s go for about 320 on eBay. Is it a good idea to replace my T989 for a Nexus and then load JB on it? Thanks in advance!

By the time u sell it and get your money JB shud be officially out

I'm glad I'm not the only one who has considered this!

If you can deal with no SD slot.. why not?

Does the 1.2Ghz on the Nexus perform better the our 1.5Ghz S3 processor?

Many times good software can make up for hardware. I don't own a Gnex myself but I've read good things about how smooth it runs. They'll always get the best vanilla android software as well. Camera quality (8mp vs 5mp) and no sd card slot are probably the biggest concerns with it.
You can always check out their forum and see how people like it.

I will never do this. I need extra memory and in 3 years i havent carried camera with me lol

i honestly think its a stupid trade, dont get me wrong the nexus is a beast n has some amazing developments but if ur doing this only for JB u might as well be patient n wait till we get ours

The lack of SD card slot and overall mediocre hardware quality put me off. I was definitely considering the Nexus as I prefer a pure Android experience, but the reviews just aren't great.

I already posted it up on Craigslist. Do you guys think I'll regret it later?

I had the same idea!
I was thinking about selling my Galaxy S II GT-I9100, so I could get the Gal Nex and get a taste of Jelly Bean.
You might want to check out this Galaxy S II resale value guide [goo.gl/lwq4T] it has some useful insight regarding the differences in the second hand prices of the GS2.
Lucky for you the T-Mobile version has the highest (locked version) resale value @ $357~ on Ebay.

I've asked myself this question since the price dropped, and frankly im scared ill miss my s2 and regret the decision. Lol. I'm just going to save up and order one from google. But remember Apple just won a court ruling that bans the selling of the nexus here in the USA. Gaaay apple.

I also though about selling this phone for the gnex but in the end decided not to and be patient. I'll just save up so cash. If you do get it tell us how it is

I sold my T989!
So today I sold my T989 on Craigslist for $345. I had $60 extra and I just ordered it from the play store.
I think I got lucky I sold it for 345, because some used in mint condition T989s on eBay are now going for about $300.
I'll let you know what I think about it. I can always come back to T989 if I don't like it. I'm sure the resale value of the GNex will go up if the ban is put in full effect!

You can go to other threads, gsmarena, etc., and see the phone spec differences.
Just a couple things that might be a little subtle from just looking at the specs .....
The S2 has faster HPSA, 42 MBS theoretical VS 21 on the Gnexus. Most PHONES can't take advantage of that speed by themselves (or users don't). It makes a difference for me, as I hotspot and run a computer off of my tmobile connection. You do need to be in a tmo 42 mbs area for this to be useful, however, so, if you're not, this feature might not be "worth it" for you.
PENTABAND? What provider do you use, are you looking to do contracts? Straight Talk (att and tmobile) and tmobile itself, offer great pay per month contracts (plenty of posts on the ST $45 unlimited everything plans). The S2 is faster ON TMOBILE, but, while it can run on ATT for voice, data is very slow. The nexus is fast on both ATT and Tmobile.
Pentaband is a good feature if you are looking to switch between att and tmo (maybe one gets better reception when you're at school, the other when you're at home ?).
A THOUGHT HERE is the ATT S2 SKYROCKET, apparently, it runs ATT fast natively, AND, can be flashed to the Tmo version (Tmo S2 doesn't have the same radio, so doesn't work the other way)
As others have mentioned, more developer support for the GN, less for the S2, but, ... the S2 has lots of good roms too.
SD CARD - is "WORTH" it to me. I am in hotels a lot, have a large collection of blu ray DVDs I've converted using DVD Catalyst, and have many on micro SD cards ... and I can use my phone as a movie player if the hotel (or if I go to a friends house) TV has HDMI.
The built in memory on the GN is not so small that its a big hinderance, I can still fit a movie or two and hundreds of hours of songs, so, long as you plan you're fine ... removeable SD allows you to bring your entire song collection and dozens of movies.
That's useful for me, might not be "worth it" for you.
Both are great phones, FOR ME, the Nexus is much more versitile if you're looking to maximize pay as you go plans and carrier useage, the S2 if you are looking for pure data speed and SD is a little stronger.
Good luck with your choice, and let us know how it turns out!

Have Galaxy Nexus but this phone tempts me.

I got the nexus because I was kind of sick of going through phones and I finally thought j was happy except someone I know has the gs2 and she has it so bloated and stock and its a mess yet it seems so smooth regardless.
When I try to think of advantages I think for me is full front and back white color. Resolution doesn't bother me as I've come to realize.
Has anyone had both and noticed snap pier ping times and internet speed? As little difference between the two I have a feeling when playing with the gs2 that it just loads faster and quicker after clicking a page or refreshing this forum.
I know the development is no where near nexus but I've also come to realize I'm not as addicted to flashing roms as I used to be and am just stuck with one.
Battery I hear is great and with 2100 battery from Verizon nexus I'm sire will be awesome.
I know there are plenty of threads of this but I feel they haven't really been addressed recently in couple months.
Any T-Mobile users who have used both phones . How do you feel about the few things I mentioned and anything else you would like to add.
It just bothers me when I play with the two next to each other as awesome as the nexus is its like I can't help myself wanting the gs2 which makes me regret not getting one when I got the nexus and blew all that money.
However at this point I could defibetly do a straight trade and so just wanna hear some feedback.
Thanks guys.

You could say I'm growing up and will be working full time when I graduate and will probably be even less involved soon.
Maybe having a T-Mobile phone with actual radios designed to be used here is just stabler then an imported nexus . Maybe not.
Ics is great not gonna lie. But its a lot like other things. You get bored so I guess one thing is I don't necessarily need the latest software because to me I feel the gs2 is quite good already.

Galaxy SII or SIII

So I have the original vibrant and I was wondering should I upgrade to the SII for free today or pay for an SIII next week? Any input from the people that have been using it is appreciated! I just don't know if the SIII is worth paying for if I can get the SII for free... Thanks!!!

S3 of course . I m going to switch someday lol
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Ya know, I was a vibrant user, recently upgraded to the t989 and I love it (of course). If you look at the specs on the s3 you're not going to see a huge boost in performance. Slightly different aestethic design to it, a few features that, while pretty cool, are already being provided as mods for the s2, thanks to the brilliant devs here xda.
Another thing to look at is the fact that the s2 has been on the market long enough that its bugs have been worked out and there are endless options for modification.
Last but not least, tmo is offering the s2 for free? Wish we had known that was coming a couple months ago..
If it were my wallet, I'd go with the s2 and use the money on a new BBQ. Good luck with your decision and I hope you enjoy whichever device you go with.

Yes t mobile is having a sale this weekend only with a mail in rebate. I checked it out on the website and called customer service and they confirmed. I might get the s2 and I can always return it next week if I change my mind. Thanks for the help!

Really I just want something faster and 4g and a better camera. What's your opinions on how the s2 performs in these categories?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
s3 is a great phone and you should upgrade if you're on the vibrant. I could not justify upgrading from an s2 to an s3 this seems like just an incremental upgrade imo. But from the vibrant the s3 will be a huge improvement.
Honestly the one S if anything seems like the most exciting device(I know I will get flamed). If you can get around not having an SD card(I cant right now but I can see myself giving it up in the future.) I would go with that.
Metal, honestly, the s2 really meets your needs as far as what you're looking for, camera is crystal clear, even with flash in poor lighting. The phone is super responsive, never lags for me and has 4g. Certainly not trying to talk you out of the s3 tho, just saying my experience with the s2 has been very positive.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The specs of the SII vs SIII aren't too far off. They'll both perform very well (with the slight improvements going to the SIII of course). The one area that is tempting/makes me jealous about the SIII is the screen resolution. That sucker is very crisp, and makes our screen seem rather low-res.
However, having said that the SII sounds like it will meet your needs. It has a fantastic camera, and very high speeds. I'm also not sure if the SIII supports full 42mb/s like the SII does (because of the talk of a unified model), so it may be slower but if someone has more knowledge perhaps they can correct me.
When it comes down to it, it depends if you think it's worth the $200 difference. For me, I'd probably take an SII and call it a day.

There is nothing new in sgs3 I mean this time Samsung did not introduced any thing first time. Many companies already released their phones with HD screen and with quad core processor.

The thing about this is ... if u get an s2 or s3 are u gonna run it stock... answer is probably not so next question is do u like touchwiz enough to keep it... reason for asking is that if u plan on running cm9, or aokp then the difference between the two is minimal I'd say the s3 obviously is gonna outperform the s2 but in day to day use on cm9 and aokp I'd say u wouldn't really be able to tell the difference.

I couldn't agree more. Of course the S3 is faster, but I honestly can't think of applications or situations in which the SII fails me. Sure maybe it will be 2ms faster to load the Homescreen, but we're not talking about noticeable differences. Until software catches up and creates more demanding apps (or perhaps they're out and I just don't want to use them yet), there will not be much differentiation.
I don't see the point of performing an upgrade simply for upgrade's sake. I have a desktop that's aged quite well. The processor is nearly 5.5 years old, and the graphics cards are 4 years old. There are computers that can run laps around mine, but in the end it doesn't matter because all of the programs and games I play run nearly flawlessly at max or near max settings. Sorry if that's OT, but it's the same concept.

Right, I think the question is will it get the full 42mb/s.
I see conflicting information regarding what type of 4g speeds this thing will get (I mean HSPA+ 21 or 42mb/s). Some sites say there will be a T-Mo version, and it may have the fastest quadcore while other carriers get slower ones, and then others say the phone will be unified.
Does anyone have a recent trustworthy link regarding this issue?
The s2 is great. I'd stock with it if I didn't have an upgrade available. But since I do, I'm getting the gs3. The variety of cases alone makes it better for me as I like to use multiple cases and swap them frequently.

Why not wait until the upgrade means more to you? It's not like you lose the upgrade, and it takes 2 additional years to get another.

To sgs2 or not to sgs2?

Just moved to t mobile and have a one s. Awesome phone, with spotty reception., which is the reason for wanting to exchange. Can't exchange for sgs3 due to backorders and 14 day exchange. Can go to sgs2 but is it worth the little downgrade?

Don't do it because its going to take a while for us to get the new software (Jellybean). I'm going to give you a little advice that I learn the hard way. Only buy Google made phones like galaxy nexus. Never buy other parties like Samsung and HTC cause they never update phone and there's not a lot of development. For android only get Google specific manufacturer phone . I can't stress that enough

Reception is a tough one as it depends on so many factors. I live just a few miles from the nearest TMO tower and my job is only 15 miles away so I always have great reception. I'm currently running the Whitehawkx AOKP ROM and have no issues with audio, camera, GPS or battery. Audio is crystal clear on calls and through apps such as Pandora, HBOGo, etc. The camera is what it is, 8mp is capable of quite a bit and if you get a solid HDR app such as HDR Camer+ by Almalence, you'll really get to see the hardware used to its potential.
I don't use maps much so I can't comment a whole lot on GPS other than to say the few times I have needed it, it has worked flawlessly. The battery is of course dependent upon far too many factors that all come from personal usage tendencies but I can say from my experience I get between 15 and 20 hours of battery a day on a full charge.
I'd suggest just checking the phone out in store if possible to get a better feel of what you'd be getting. Yeah, the OS updates are few and far between, and could very well be over at this point, but with all the custom ROM choices and the abilities of the Devs here, I wouldn't be shocked to see more custom choices as we go along.

There isn't a bright future for this phone. Most of the devs are moving away for greater phones. Our aokp dev doesn't have this phone anymore so it's not looking too good for aokp jellybean. I'd figure out a way for an s3 or wait for the nexus to come back (hopefully).
But if you must then this is a good phone with good Rom options at this point in time. Just don't be too hopeful about the future.

If your still in your 14 days why don't u return the one s and cancel the service. Go buy a cheap prepaid phone get on T-Mobile prepaid or another prepaid service. Then when the gs3 becomes available resign up for service thru T-Mobile.

If you're looking for a really good phone but don't want to spend $600.00 then the S2 is for you IMO! I've enjoyed my S2 since I first bought it. I don't know how big you are on rooting, ROMs, and the like, but even if you don't root this phone is great! The only thing that might turn you off is the larger than average screen (the Galaxy S3 is even bigger, but thinner), in that case I would go with a Blaze.

Good messaging phone

Hey guys
I need some recommendations for a good messaging phone for my daughter. We just moved over to t-mobile. My wife, son and I all have the wifi option on our S3's but we got a Gravity TXT for my daughter. Signal isn't so good in our house but we may be getting the Cel-fi (?) units.
Any thoughts out there. Even if the phone is an older version. Mainly looking for good physical keyboard and reception.
Thanks.
If you need a physical keyboard. The T-Mobile g2. Otherwise get her an sgs3, also. Swype and voice to text are better for texting really once you're used to it.
My dad and I have the sgs3. My mom has my sgs2. My gf has my g2.
My parents reception is spotty where they live. All the phones work fine
I'm running the blaze 2 modem on my mom's. Latest stock update on my dad's.
They are into texting, now.
The g2 rocks out there, too running latest stable andromodus release.

Thanks.
Trying to find just a messaging phone. She's 12 and we made the agreement with both of our kids that they could have data phones when they get to high school. If competition continues to work on the prices we may revisit that. I haven't checked to see how cheap the minimum data is.
There are cheaper ones out there of course. That was just the first one to pop into my head.. Check out T-Mobiles website for Phones with Keyboards. Being such a yound kid, it wouldnt hurt to start with a very very cheap phone to see how they handle it.
No need to spend hundreds on a preteen. This phone is too big for kids. Go with something a bit smaller.
The question is, are you competent in rooting and running custom roms? Because many earlier androids are horrible stock, and amazing rooted. I think if you can run custom roms, look into mytouch 4g, g2, hd2, and others that released around that time. They are going for below $100 in my area, and to me they were amazing phones. Although two of them don't have a keyboard... but kids are very smart and tech savvy I'm sure they would love to learn how to Swype.

No reason to buy S3 anymore with the Nexus 4 out.

S3 = $650

I've read a bunch of comparisons but there is one major one that is always overlooked. Is the S3 a better phone? Yes. Is it's $350+ better? Definitely not.

I've read a bunch of comparisons but there is one major one that is always overlooked. Is the S3 a better phone? Yes. Is it's $350+ better? Definitely not.

funny, I paid $599 the day it came out but with 16 gig and the $300 Nexus 4 has only 8 gig.
Get your facts straight if you are going to troll.
Oh, and also:
No SD card option
Cant remove the battery
No LTE
It is made by LG, think twice before buying this phone

Yeah. Its lacking quite a few things for me.
1.) No external SD card slot.
2.) LTE
3.) A reputation for building quality products.
4.) Yes its quad-core but it won't be able to fully utilized them to their full potential.
5.) The list goes on.

Just curious, why won't the quad core processor be utilized to its full potential?

Only thing N4 has on the SGS3 are the updates and JB out the box. With Project Butter...I don't think it matters if you have dual or quad core for everyday use. I have the leaked ICS on my OG Atrix, and it flies without HW acceleration.

The Nexus 4 could do my laundry, walk my dog, cook dinner, and clean my house but without LTE and a micro SD slot I would never buy it.
My 80GB (16+64) of memory say it is
Got mine pre ordered for 549... you'd have to try to buy one for more than 500 now, see them all day for 450 and a few for 400.

Not sure when or if we will get LTE in my area. Before I moved to my new area I had it since it was released with Verizon. The performance you get for the price with the Nexus 4 is too good for me to pass up. If ever feel the need that I have to use LTE I will use one of my other devices with it if/when my area gets it.
