No reason to buy S3 anymore with the Nexus 4 out. - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

S3 = $650
Nexus 4 = $300
I've read a bunch of comparisons but there is one major one that is always overlooked. Is the S3 a better phone? Yes. Is it's $350+ better? Definitely not.

so i think if this is where you stand wouldn't it be more appropriate to post this in the Nexus 4 forums? yep. i think so. Either way. I think you need to remind yourself that you are talking about about a company (LG) with a piss poor history of producing some of the worst devices around.

Oh the reason I posted this here is because I have an S3 and will so for probably 3 years. This is where I'll be. You do bring up a great point. Not a fan of LG at ALL.
But the specs to me are mind blowing at the price point. If they had LTE for $50 more there'd be no reason to buy any other phone.

Yeah. Its lacking quite a few things for me.
1.) No external SD card slot.
2.) LTE
3.) A reputation for building quality products.
4.) Yes its quad-core but it won't be able to fully utilized them to their full potential.
5.) The list goes on.

I couldn't agree more. LTE is a must. Although here is Ontario LTE is only in the city, it is going to keep expanding and eventually be coast to coast. No clue why Google of all companies left that out. Its bad enough not having expandable memory.

Fair enough. Maybe $300 is a lot up front but over three years having that LTE will prove much more useful.

Nexus 10 is the more interesting Nexus device to me right now. Definitely wouldn't give up the GS3 for an LG device.

Nexus 4 is nice but it's a LG . They lost my business after the God awful LG thrill 3d.

Only thing N4 has on the SGS3 are the updates and JB out the box. With Project Butter...I don't think it matters if you have dual or quad core for everyday use. I have the leaked ICS on my OG Atrix, and it flies without HW acceleration.

Not sure when or if we will get LTE in my area. Before I moved to my new area I had it since it was released with Verizon. The performance you get for the price with the Nexus 4 is too good for me to pass up. If ever feel the need that I have to use LTE I will use one of my other devices with it if/when my area gets it.

LOL now that is funny.
The specifications for the SGSIII are of course subject to change, but are Samsung-developed 2.0GHz quad-core CPU (no codename given), 1.5gb RAM, 32gb internal memory (with sd card slot), and a 4.65 inch screen. A new display called Super AMOLED III is being developed specifically for the phone (SGS had Super AMOLED, SGS II had Super AMOLED Plus, SGS III has Super AMOLED III) with 1280x1024 resolution, giving the phone a ppi of 352, which they emphasized that a 352ppi will make it the highest ppi mobile phone

I agree. I think they ned to just work on perfecting their current screens and density, and making the software and hardware work better together making battery life even better. Maybe release the phone already rooted. Lol Maybe have separate roms made they could even sell them.

i guess i should be saying i **HAD** since it'll probably launch on Verizon and take 1/2 year to a year to make it to sprint like it did for the nexus s, but i'm in love with ET4G. striving for the best phone out there is moronic unless you have nothing better to do in your life

btw. Super Amoled III = HD super Amoled?
There will always be buyers remorse in the smart phone market given that there are new releases every couple of months. Only way to avoid it is to get a phone that does everything you need it to do and will continue to do so until your next upgrade and realize that you don't need a phone with quadcore SOC. Not yet, anyway.

This.
Until phones reach the same levels computers are today the development of phones will increase by a lot. It's kind of good and bad at the same time. The good part is that it pushes development to turning phones into portable computers and adds that competition between producers, making phones stronger and cheaper, but the bad part is that it causes phones to come out every few months.
No buyers remorse here this things like a sexy hamburger. Now when it come out my mind may change.

I really would like to get one but I'm having second thoughts about paying full price for a bigger screen. I should, but doubt I will knowing my impulsiveness, wait to see if there's any problems initially like there was with this phone when it first comes out. I will also wonder what kind of specs the g3 well have and when it will be here for us. Those are the two I'm watching. Also, if the note still has a dual core snapdragon when it comes out for us, I might pass. Two steps forward with the hardware then one back with the CPU.

Very true statement. If it domes with an S4pro with the new adreno gpu that thing will be a monster. I know that Samsung will eventually integrate lte in their processors but when is the question.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Yes. Give me one with LTE and any exynos processor and I would be totally satisfied and have no need for anything else for the rest of that contract at least!
With how big the battery is, couldn't they just put an lte radio in there and have a toggle to turn it off and on like wimax? Then it would still be our responsibility to watch the battery. I could totally go for something like that as long as they kept the exynos. But do not count out the S4pro it has the upgraded gpu also with lte built on the die.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
If it came with ICS out of the box, and LTE support. Would definitely pick it up.
Because I too will be paying full price (unless I come up with a way to sweet talk an early upgrade out of someone) and since I'm not even 100% sold on getting the phone, I'm definitely going to wait awhile and see how it performs. Also the extra wait time will allow a chance for the SG3 to possibly make an appearance, that's the phone I really want.
But I'm a major gadget whore so there's no guarantee what I will or won't buy regardless the cost. lol
I don't know...I like the Note, but I would need a few things in order to lock myself in for 2 more years for it. First, LTE capability. ICS would be good, but not necessary at launch for me.
It would need an upgraded processor though. With the Evo LTE coming out and the SGS III likely to be announced sometime soon, I don't want to get stuck with a last gen processor for 2 years.
Honestly, I probably won't make a decision on my next phone until I see what Sammy has up their sleeve.

Many times good software can make up for hardware. I don't own a Gnex myself but I've read good things about how smooth it runs. They'll always get the best vanilla android software as well. Camera quality (8mp vs 5mp) and no sd card slot are probably the biggest concerns with it.
You can always check out their forum and see how people like it.
I will never do this. I need extra memory and in 3 years i havent carried camera with me lol

i honestly think its a stupid trade, dont get me wrong the nexus is a beast n has some amazing developments but if ur doing this only for JB u might as well be patient n wait till we get ours
The lack of SD card slot and overall mediocre hardware quality put me off. I was definitely considering the Nexus as I prefer a pure Android experience, but the reviews just aren't great.

I sold my T989!
So today I sold my T989 on Craigslist for $345. I had $60 extra and I just ordered it from the play store.
I think I got lucky I sold it for 345, because some used in mint condition T989s on eBay are now going for about $300.
I'll let you know what I think about it. I can always come back to T989 if I don't like it. I'm sure the resale value of the GNex will go up if the ban is put in full effect!
You can go to other threads, gsmarena, etc., and see the phone spec differences.
Just a couple things that might be a little subtle from just looking at the specs .....
The S2 has faster HPSA, 42 MBS theoretical VS 21 on the Gnexus. Most PHONES can't take advantage of that speed by themselves (or users don't). It makes a difference for me, as I hotspot and run a computer off of my tmobile connection. You do need to be in a tmo 42 mbs area for this to be useful, however, so, if you're not, this feature might not be "worth it" for you.
PENTABAND? What provider do you use, are you looking to do contracts? Straight Talk (att and tmobile) and tmobile itself, offer great pay per month contracts (plenty of posts on the ST $45 unlimited everything plans). The S2 is faster ON TMOBILE, but, while it can run on ATT for voice, data is very slow. The nexus is fast on both ATT and Tmobile.
Pentaband is a good feature if you are looking to switch between att and tmo (maybe one gets better reception when you're at school, the other when you're at home ?).
A THOUGHT HERE is the ATT S2 SKYROCKET, apparently, it runs ATT fast natively, AND, can be flashed to the Tmo version (Tmo S2 doesn't have the same radio, so doesn't work the other way)
As others have mentioned, more developer support for the GN, less for the S2, but, ... the S2 has lots of good roms too.
SD CARD - is "WORTH" it to me. I am in hotels a lot, have a large collection of blu ray DVDs I've converted using DVD Catalyst, and have many on micro SD cards ... and I can use my phone as a movie player if the hotel (or if I go to a friends house) TV has HDMI.
The built in memory on the GN is not so small that its a big hinderance, I can still fit a movie or two and hundreds of hours of songs, so, long as you plan you're fine ... removeable SD allows you to bring your entire song collection and dozens of movies.
That's useful for me, might not be "worth it" for you.
Both are great phones, FOR ME, the Nexus is much more versitile if you're looking to maximize pay as you go plans and carrier useage, the S2 if you are looking for pure data speed and SD is a little stronger.
Good luck with your choice, and let us know how it turns out!

So who's planning on getting the Nexus 4?

Just curious, who's planning on getting the Nexus 4? Also, what are your thoughts on Google not adding expandable SD card slots to their Nexus devices? (I guess to push Google Drive) And also, no LTE chip.
For around $350?
I for one, (because I'm an Android fanatic), do plan on ordering one. (Despite some of the cons listed above) Because of it's specs. Just wanna get a feel for everybody else's thoughts.

Yeah that thing bombed! LOL
WeWell if you think about it, for Google to be able to hit that magic $399 pricetag, some things need to get axed. The Galaxy Nexus was $399, and had a slow OMAP processor and lousy camera and cheapy build quality. Google and LG probably thought about it and moved their priorities around a bit. All those three things are being addressed. You get the latest S4 Pro quad-core, decent 8MP camera, and "much better than Samsung" build quality. The sealed battery and no MicroSD is Google's own deliriums, so you can't blame LG for that. That really only leaves the LTE chip that can be axed to save money, since they are still expensive. This is primarily an unlocked world phone that accepts SIM cards. Most of the world doesn't have LTE yet. The ones that do have spotty coverage. And honestly you will notice the faster quad-core browser rendering more than the increased data speed. A phone can only render so fast. I've had 20Mbps cable and 3Mbps dsl and for daily surfing purposes, they aren't that different, since websites are designed for that lower tier. On a phone, the faster browser would make the bigger difference. Not to mention the battery life saved. I think it's a smart move. Right now, I don't even have a data plan, so I Wifi hop everywhere and the $$$ saved from having to buy a $600+ LTE phone with the latest processor/screen combo is just a no-brainer. It caters to my needs especially.

Is anyone considering the Nexus4?

Would that actually be a step backwards?
No LTE? How 2010..
I was looking at it (virtually) briefly but what draws me to the Note II is the S-pen functionality. No other phone except maybe the Note I offers that at the moment. So there's not really any comparison out there!

No LTE, no removable battery, no MicroSD... it's like an iPhone desperately trying to be Android. No thanks.

Indeed. It is a horrible trend. Losing features and options we had before...why even go back like that , just plain dumb.
i have one on the way; i use 2 phones one for work and the other for personal stuff and i want to see how the N4 compares to my S3 (e.g., to be the personal phone). that is, how it compares in person in every day use. i've used the previous Nexus devices only to give the S and GN to my kids because of the low in-call volume. (i still have the N1 in pristine condition). the shortcomings you guys mentioned definitely weigh against the N4 being "my" second phone, but the only way for me to be sure is to try it out.
Considering the device costs half as much as the Note 2 on the play store I'm sure plenty of people will find it an attractive product regardless of the lack of external sd, removal battery, LTE, etc. Also because it's a Nexus device Google will likely support it for a long time to come.
That being said, had I the option of both devices and price wasn't an issue, I would take my Note 2 any day.

Please create a thread on your thoughts comparing both even though most would say no comparison lol.
Also, I thought nexus was suppose to have difference devices from different companies.

well... not sure if i'm getting mine now. got the "back-order" email and then an email that said it should ship today without tracking numbers. if it doesn't ship by Friday, i'll cancel and stick with the SGS3 & GN2. can't go wrong with that combo.

That's a badass combo for sure... Probably the two best phones on the market to date. I too had ordered the N4 and got that email and just canceled and went with the Note 2 and could not be happier. Looking back, I just got caught up in the hype... would have been a huge mistake to go from the One X to that phone.
