Hey guys
I need some recommendations for a good messaging phone for my daughter. We just moved over to t-mobile. My wife, son and I all have the wifi option on our S3's but we got a Gravity TXT for my daughter. Signal isn't so good in our house but we may be getting the Cel-fi (?) units.
Any thoughts out there. Even if the phone is an older version. Mainly looking for good physical keyboard and reception.
Thanks.
If you need a physical keyboard. The T-Mobile g2. Otherwise get her an sgs3, also. Swype and voice to text are better for texting really once you're used to it.
My dad and I have the sgs3. My mom has my sgs2. My gf has my g2.
My parents reception is spotty where they live. All the phones work fine
I'm running the blaze 2 modem on my mom's. Latest stock update on my dad's.
They are into texting, now.
The g2 rocks out there, too running latest stable andromodus release.

Thanks.
Trying to find just a messaging phone. She's 12 and we made the agreement with both of our kids that they could have data phones when they get to high school. If competition continues to work on the prices we may revisit that. I haven't checked to see how cheap the minimum data is.
There are cheaper ones out there of course. That was just the first one to pop into my head.. Check out T-Mobiles website for Phones with Keyboards. Being such a yound kid, it wouldnt hurt to start with a very very cheap phone to see how they handle it.
No need to spend hundreds on a preteen. This phone is too big for kids. Go with something a bit smaller.
The question is, are you competent in rooting and running custom roms? Because many earlier androids are horrible stock, and amazing rooted. I think if you can run custom roms, look into mytouch 4g, g2, hd2, and others that released around that time. They are going for below $100 in my area, and to me they were amazing phones. Although two of them don't have a keyboard... but kids are very smart and tech savvy I'm sure they would love to learn how to Swype.

Blackberry 9700. Perfect for smaller hands and has awesome battery life and one of the best physical keyboards out there.
I have seen them for under 100 bucks off Craigslist.

Thanks again guys. I understand I can put a data phone on a line without data if I don't go through tmo to do it? Just buy one off craigslist or ebay. If I do that, can I use a wifi capable phone without a data plan. We just don't think she needs data but I am willing to pay for a decent piece of hardware.
Again, just trying to do this on the cheap.
Thanks a bunch.

Yep Wi-Fi isn't controlled by your carrier. Totally forgot about bb, never used one, but they're good alternatives with longer battery life.

Ok guys, here's my "delimma". I have an upgrade available to me. I've been wanting a gs2 since it came out in Europe. I had every intention of getting this within the first week it came out on tmo. BUT, reading about all the issues with lines on the screen, resolution, etc, I'm skeptical. It's basically going to be this phone or I'll cancel my line (I'm on a family line). I havent had a chance to play with one in person yet. So, in the meantime, I'm trying to gather opinions on the phone.
With all that being said, if you had a chance to relive Wednesday or whatever day you bought the gs2, would you buy it again?

yup! I love the phone. More so then the G2X.
I would for sure. I think it's the best phone on T-Mobile and T-Mobile is the cheapest out of the major wireless providers for me.
I am eligible for an upgrade to my iPhone 3GS from AT&T. Picked up a Galaxy S II and ported my number over to TMO. Almost everything about this phone is better than my old iPhone. Couldn't be happier. Oh, and I'm paying less for my plan, too!
Yep, I can relate to some. I tried the epic 4g touch version on sprint. If I could swap the internals with that it would be more awesome. As it stands though, once root is here and I can tether I'll be stoked. As of right now I'm happy with it. It feels solid and has a professional look and feel to it.

I'm going to give it a try again. The SGS2 was the phone I wanted from the git go. Sounds like the ones with the least amount of problems are the 9/28 boxes.

For those who have an Epic 4g Touch, are you going to get the Galaxy Nexus. I have received mine yesterday and liking it so far. The only things missing are custom roms and LTE. Here is a pic
Is battery life better or the same? On the nexus.

I called Sprint and asked for a "Buy Out" on one of my lines which was due for an upgrade by the end of the year. It only cost $45 to "Buy Out" which essentially means pushing your upgrade to the current month.
Picking up a Galaxy Nexus tomorrow at the store =]
I don't see the point. It is inferior hardware-wise to the SII, and by the time LTE is in full swing here in KC, the SIII will be available. And since I already have ICS on my SII, it just seems silly to me.
Does this one actually have the NFC chip? I was a little bummed the SGS2 couldn't use google beam or wallet.
What about the speaker is it low? I'm thinking about picking one up tomorrow.

I love the design of the Nexus and the specs are pretty good, almost equal to the E4GT, but what I dont like is the high price for "less" phone. The ice cream sandwhich that comes with the phone is great as well but could do with a little less flash and a little bit more efficiency in terms of smoothness and battery life. I still want one though because i dont like the physical buttons on my phone.

I probably forgot some other high end Sprint phones but I had those too. The GNex will be chic of the Month till the S3 is released. Then this phone will serve as an excellent back up..

Speaker is not low but kinda wish it came with two like the 4s. Comes with 4.0.4 update out the box. Screen is crazy nice. The one thing that irks me is that I'm having problems with Exchange. Doesn't sync with my work email. Gonna have to do some research on that issue. Also come with $10 in Google Wallet. Won't get the other 40-50 Google money from Sprint for a couple of weeks. Probably at the after end of 14 day period..

Google beam can be used with any other android phone with an NFC chip. You can sent contacts, files, directions to a location quicker and more efficiently than bump or over bluetooth. Google wallet is still in beta so it can't be found at a lot of places, but on a few business trips to California I have seen some stores that will accept it. It sounds awesome though completely itemizes all your receipts and sync's them to you g-mail account. I was just upset when my girl friends nexus s had the technology when my brand new SGS2 didn't (sprint removed them all other variations on other carriers had this technology). I guess we found out why they removed the NFC chip, to entice people to upgrade to the Nexus

Many times good software can make up for hardware. I don't own a Gnex myself but I've read good things about how smooth it runs. They'll always get the best vanilla android software as well. Camera quality (8mp vs 5mp) and no sd card slot are probably the biggest concerns with it.
You can always check out their forum and see how people like it.
I will never do this. I need extra memory and in 3 years i havent carried camera with me lol

I sold my T989!
So today I sold my T989 on Craigslist for $345. I had $60 extra and I just ordered it from the play store.
I think I got lucky I sold it for 345, because some used in mint condition T989s on eBay are now going for about $300.
I'll let you know what I think about it. I can always come back to T989 if I don't like it. I'm sure the resale value of the GNex will go up if the ban is put in full effect!
You can go to other threads, gsmarena, etc., and see the phone spec differences.
Just a couple things that might be a little subtle from just looking at the specs .....
The S2 has faster HPSA, 42 MBS theoretical VS 21 on the Gnexus. Most PHONES can't take advantage of that speed by themselves (or users don't). It makes a difference for me, as I hotspot and run a computer off of my tmobile connection. You do need to be in a tmo 42 mbs area for this to be useful, however, so, if you're not, this feature might not be "worth it" for you.
PENTABAND? What provider do you use, are you looking to do contracts? Straight Talk (att and tmobile) and tmobile itself, offer great pay per month contracts (plenty of posts on the ST $45 unlimited everything plans). The S2 is faster ON TMOBILE, but, while it can run on ATT for voice, data is very slow. The nexus is fast on both ATT and Tmobile.
Pentaband is a good feature if you are looking to switch between att and tmo (maybe one gets better reception when you're at school, the other when you're at home ?).
A THOUGHT HERE is the ATT S2 SKYROCKET, apparently, it runs ATT fast natively, AND, can be flashed to the Tmo version (Tmo S2 doesn't have the same radio, so doesn't work the other way)
As others have mentioned, more developer support for the GN, less for the S2, but, ... the S2 has lots of good roms too.
SD CARD - is "WORTH" it to me. I am in hotels a lot, have a large collection of blu ray DVDs I've converted using DVD Catalyst, and have many on micro SD cards ... and I can use my phone as a movie player if the hotel (or if I go to a friends house) TV has HDMI.
The built in memory on the GN is not so small that its a big hinderance, I can still fit a movie or two and hundreds of hours of songs, so, long as you plan you're fine ... removeable SD allows you to bring your entire song collection and dozens of movies.
That's useful for me, might not be "worth it" for you.
Both are great phones, FOR ME, the Nexus is much more versitile if you're looking to maximize pay as you go plans and carrier useage, the S2 if you are looking for pure data speed and SD is a little stronger.
Good luck with your choice, and let us know how it turns out!
Just moved to t mobile and have a one s. Awesome phone, with spotty reception., which is the reason for wanting to exchange. Can't exchange for sgs3 due to backorders and 14 day exchange. Can go to sgs2 but is it worth the little downgrade?
I love mine. The device is rock solid and the multitude of custom ROMS, GB and ICS, should give you enough variety to find what makes you happy.

How is reception, audio, camera, GPS, battery life
Don't do it because its going to take a while for us to get the new software (Jellybean). I'm going to give you a little advice that I learn the hard way. Only buy Google made phones like galaxy nexus. Never buy other parties like Samsung and HTC cause they never update phone and there's not a lot of development. For android only get Google specific manufacturer phone . I can't stress that enough

Reception is a tough one as it depends on so many factors. I live just a few miles from the nearest TMO tower and my job is only 15 miles away so I always have great reception. I'm currently running the Whitehawkx AOKP ROM and have no issues with audio, camera, GPS or battery. Audio is crystal clear on calls and through apps such as Pandora, HBOGo, etc. The camera is what it is, 8mp is capable of quite a bit and if you get a solid HDR app such as HDR Camer+ by Almalence, you'll really get to see the hardware used to its potential.
I don't use maps much so I can't comment a whole lot on GPS other than to say the few times I have needed it, it has worked flawlessly. The battery is of course dependent upon far too many factors that all come from personal usage tendencies but I can say from my experience I get between 15 and 20 hours of battery a day on a full charge.
I'd suggest just checking the phone out in store if possible to get a better feel of what you'd be getting. Yeah, the OS updates are few and far between, and could very well be over at this point, but with all the custom ROM choices and the abilities of the Devs here, I wouldn't be shocked to see more custom choices as we go along.

There isn't a bright future for this phone. Most of the devs are moving away for greater phones. Our aokp dev doesn't have this phone anymore so it's not looking too good for aokp jellybean. I'd figure out a way for an s3 or wait for the nexus to come back (hopefully).
But if you must then this is a good phone with good Rom options at this point in time. Just don't be too hopeful about the future.

If your still in your 14 days why don't u return the one s and cancel the service. Go buy a cheap prepaid phone get on T-Mobile prepaid or another prepaid service. Then when the gs3 becomes available resign up for service thru T-Mobile.

I'm not paying full price for the gnex.
If you're looking for a really good phone but don't want to spend $600.00 then the S2 is for you IMO! I've enjoyed my S2 since I first bought it. I don't know how big you are on rooting, ROMs, and the like, but even if you don't root this phone is great! The only thing that might turn you off is the larger than average screen (the Galaxy S3 is even bigger, but thinner), in that case I would go with a Blaze.

Bigger screen, I like the back button design, hardware that will keep up with other phones for quite a while.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda app-developers app
Given LG's history of releasing a new flagship device every 6 months and quickly forgetting about their previous flagship phones when it comes to software updates, Nexus 5. (It'll feel newer longer.)
The Nexus 5 is GSM and CDMA compatible; higher resale value down the line.
While the Nexus 5 has a smaller battery, the built-in wireless charging capability (also featured on the Verizon LG G2) means occasional top-ups throughout the day are easy and convenient. While the wireless charging pads don't come with the Nexus 5, the price difference between it and the G2 mean you can afford at least two (one for work and one for home).
If you're considering a mobile provider that gives you a discount for not subsidizing a phone, the Nexus 5's retail price of $349/399 (16/32GB) versus the LG G2's ~$600 can save you a lot of money over the course of your carrier's contract.
TL;DR: Unless you need the 3000mAh battery, 5.2" screen, IR blaster, or moar megapixels... I'd advise the Nexus 5.

You'd be getting a sprint variant presumably right? The LS980 dev forums could use a little pick me up, roms are being built for multiple variants in one, and while thats cool and all, it would be nice to see LS980 specific roms/kernels. Since the N5 community is over saturated to be honest, another dev wouldn't matter much on the N5 seeing as everything over there has been built or is in the process. On the G2 however a new dev would be more appreciated seeing as there only a handful comparatively speaking of devs working on the sprint variant, hope this gives you some help on your decision!

I love being able to contribute by building ROMs, but I have been super busy with life and work. I am happy with my decision to get the optimus g, but with 4.4 ROMs and most ROMs in general being glitchy it really makes me want the nexus so I can be constantly updated without many issues. I agree that the nexus won't need anymore devs, but maybe that's not a bad thing for me. I already feel bad when I don't have enough time to get something out to you guys.

I'm thinking of going with the nexus 5, i orderered one from the playstore for my mothers x-mas present and it showed up yesterday. its fast and light as hell. I'm seriously thinking that not having a contract anymore and a cheaper phone bill would be nice.

I'm going to do mine through the new sprint one up. I can't afford a new phone outright.

Even if you don't have the time to bring something to the table now, It's still pleasing to know that at some point you'll have time, should you join us over on the LS980 that is. It's not the quantity of releases that matters most, it's the quality. And right now we don't have much of either for LS980.

I personally may be going with the Nexus 5. Until then, you'll be missed on this forum. (I'm assuming you'll stop deving for us if you get a new phone to focus on)

Tempting. Sprint is being stupid as usual about working with me to stay a customer. I might be switching to t mobile. I heard that their data speeds are good but voice service sucks. Can anyone comment on that? I have been having terrible service with sprint lately and no 4g where I live so t mobile might be a huge upgrade.

I'd think it fitting to do exactly and only what is right for you, and no one else.
As to voice + data services, these vary by region of the country. It took 2 years where I live for Sprint to go from selling 4G LTE phones and charging for them monthly to actually delivering on it. Now, I couldn't be happier with the data and voice quality (though voice has never been an issue where I reside).
T-Mobile may be great where you live, and based on what you've stated about wanting time for you and wanting a trouble-free update experience, go with the Nexus 5 and be done with it.
I wish you luck.

I appreciate all the opinions and thoughts. I ended up going with the nexus 5 on t mobile. I did the jump program so maybe in 6 months if I have the urge to contribute more I will try something different.
