So I have the original vibrant and I was wondering should I upgrade to the SII for free today or pay for an SIII next week? Any input from the people that have been using it is appreciated! I just don't know if the SIII is worth paying for if I can get the SII for free... Thanks!!!

Ya know, I was a vibrant user, recently upgraded to the t989 and I love it (of course). If you look at the specs on the s3 you're not going to see a huge boost in performance. Slightly different aestethic design to it, a few features that, while pretty cool, are already being provided as mods for the s2, thanks to the brilliant devs here xda.
Another thing to look at is the fact that the s2 has been on the market long enough that its bugs have been worked out and there are endless options for modification.
Last but not least, tmo is offering the s2 for free? Wish we had known that was coming a couple months ago..
If it were my wallet, I'd go with the s2 and use the money on a new BBQ. Good luck with your decision and I hope you enjoy whichever device you go with.

Yes t mobile is having a sale this weekend only with a mail in rebate. I checked it out on the website and called customer service and they confirmed. I might get the s2 and I can always return it next week if I change my mind. Thanks for the help!

Really I just want something faster and 4g and a better camera. What's your opinions on how the s2 performs in these categories?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda premium
s3 is a great phone and you should upgrade if you're on the vibrant. I could not justify upgrading from an s2 to an s3 this seems like just an incremental upgrade imo. But from the vibrant the s3 will be a huge improvement.
Honestly the one S if anything seems like the most exciting device(I know I will get flamed). If you can get around not having an SD card(I cant right now but I can see myself giving it up in the future.) I would go with that.
Metal, honestly, the s2 really meets your needs as far as what you're looking for, camera is crystal clear, even with flash in poor lighting. The phone is super responsive, never lags for me and has 4g. Certainly not trying to talk you out of the s3 tho, just saying my experience with the s2 has been very positive.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
The specs of the SII vs SIII aren't too far off. They'll both perform very well (with the slight improvements going to the SIII of course). The one area that is tempting/makes me jealous about the SIII is the screen resolution. That sucker is very crisp, and makes our screen seem rather low-res.
However, having said that the SII sounds like it will meet your needs. It has a fantastic camera, and very high speeds. I'm also not sure if the SIII supports full 42mb/s like the SII does (because of the talk of a unified model), so it may be slower but if someone has more knowledge perhaps they can correct me.
When it comes down to it, it depends if you think it's worth the $200 difference. For me, I'd probably take an SII and call it a day.

Don't mean to high jack the thread, but..
How's many current S2 owners are jumping ship to the S3??
Just wondering because for the ones that are, we are gonna need to stick together and start a bounty for TDJ and Eugene when we get there.
Gotta have them on board.

I am not going for s3. May be i will go for next nexus or note 2 when they availble.
There is nothing new in sgs3 I mean this time Samsung did not introduced any thing first time. Many companies already released their phones with HD screen and with quad core processor.
I am expecting something unseen from Samsung but this time they did not.

For those that think its just incremental upgrade, I think not. S4 processor is greatly improved over the S3. It has improvements in battery life and power. See this website of various benchmarks and phone comparisons

The thing about this is ... if u get an s2 or s3 are u gonna run it stock... answer is probably not so next question is do u like touchwiz enough to keep it... reason for asking is that if u plan on running cm9, or aokp then the difference between the two is minimal I'd say the s3 obviously is gonna outperform the s2 but in day to day use on cm9 and aokp I'd say u wouldn't really be able to tell the difference.

I couldn't agree more. Of course the S3 is faster, but I honestly can't think of applications or situations in which the SII fails me. Sure maybe it will be 2ms faster to load the Homescreen, but we're not talking about noticeable differences. Until software catches up and creates more demanding apps (or perhaps they're out and I just don't want to use them yet), there will not be much differentiation.
I don't see the point of performing an upgrade simply for upgrade's sake. I have a desktop that's aged quite well. The processor is nearly 5.5 years old, and the graphics cards are 4 years old. There are computers that can run laps around mine, but in the end it doesn't matter because all of the programs and games I play run nearly flawlessly at max or near max settings. Sorry if that's OT, but it's the same concept.

Right, I think the question is will it get the full 42mb/s.
I see conflicting information regarding what type of 4g speeds this thing will get (I mean HSPA+ 21 or 42mb/s). Some sites say there will be a T-Mo version, and it may have the fastest quadcore while other carriers get slower ones, and then others say the phone will be unified.
Does anyone have a recent trustworthy link regarding this issue?
The s2 is great. I'd stock with it if I didn't have an upgrade available. But since I do, I'm getting the gs3. The variety of cases alone makes it better for me as I like to use multiple cases and swap them frequently.

Why not wait until the upgrade means more to you? It's not like you lose the upgrade, and it takes 2 additional years to get another.

Maybe I am ungrateful for making this post but I know I am not the only one who feels like this. About a month ago I was rock in a blackberry tour not because I couldn't get any other phone but because I was semi happy with it and no other phone period really had any affect on me.
Then one day I saw an epic touch in Craigslist for 200 and thought it was a scam but it was real. At first I had the phone. Its big, Los, battery, etc. Was gonna sell it for profit but I already sold my tour and the deal was just so good. Then started rooting and ics theme and tweaking made me fall in love.
Then got my gf a nexus s and put ics on it and it began. Then I went to Verizon and touched the galaxy nexus. It will cost me 1000 dollars to switch to Verizon with everybody. The physical of this phone to me is beyond any phone I have ever touched. Ice cream sand which is what android was always supposed to be.
Our screen is better in colors and our gpu is better and we have an SD card slot. But all that doesn't matter. Samsung will destroy ics with touchwiz and then the waiting game will start for a pure rom.
We all want the nexus lets just face it. The minute sprint has it most of you are gone like me.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
The only real life difference will be ics ... and its not worth $200 plus a wasted upgrade to me ... would much rather save it until quad core 2.0 GHz processors WITH ics come out like 3 months after it gets to sprint ...
Actually, I don't want a nexus, or galaxy nexus that is, with those ugly ass on-screen buttons. This phone is better IMHO. Now, if the SGS3 gets released with ICS, I will be even more sure I don't want the galaxy nexus. Touchwiz or no touchwiz. The S line is rock solid, and people that understand that, know that. (TMO's maybe not so much...)
But that's just me.

Yeah I know but physical design has to count for something. The nexus fits in the hand just right. Anyway I know its not that serious its just sad to see what HTC and Samsung will do to these phones. Give customers a choice. Most people won't root there phone.
Google has to stop selling out, yeah tons of people have android but probably 90 percent of them don't even know what android can really do.

I can wait.
I need external SD support for my music and movies.
I can wait for devs to ready ICS ROMs, and replace TouchWiz with ADW.
The only thing I would like to have is the HD resolution, but again, I can wait.
My next phone will be a quad-core with HD resolution.
This will probably mean the GS III.
Hey we all can say we can wait but that's easy to say since you don't have a choice. When or if sprint gets the nexus then will see if you wait.
At the end of the day we still have great phones but don't act like the s3 is around the corner knowing sprint it will be September again. And we still don't know what the s3 will have.

Sorry but I have ics on my ns4g and I would not trade this phone to the hardware inferior one just because of ics. I wasn't that impressed with ics. I'm running peter Alfonzo's ics nightly. Everything works on the ROM, so its not because something isn't working. Ics seems slower on the same phone versus 2.3.6. I'd rather take better performance over eye candy.

We are not talking about the nexus s as I have tried all those rooms and they are slower because its still very new is it recall fair to compare it this early.
Second this phone the epic and nexus are pretty much the same phone but.
Nexus looks better feels better because its slimmer. On a design point it kills this phone ( this phone is nice too but nexus is an evolution of what phones will be )
And the most important thing is it is a nexus. Is anybody here looking for to touchwiz please tell me. Do you really want Samsung over Google. I trust Google is better with there own software os.
I can't even put a case on this phone or it feels like I am holding a brick. Sorry to say this because I like my phone but its design is like somebody ironed an iPhone flat. And with a case it feels like a HTC phone.

IMO it's not about being a "hater". Sure ICS is sweet, and it would rock to have a Nexus Galaxy, but to spend the cash(1k according to OP) just for a phone upgrade is something in the likes of greedy little kids with the latest toys. It just doesn't make sense given we all have great phones.
The specs on our phones are great, so unless someone can jump on for cheap it just doesn't make sense. If Sprint got it people might be more interested but paying ETF + whatever it'll cost is just silly to do for essentially an OD update.
I got the nexus because I was kind of sick of going through phones and I finally thought j was happy except someone I know has the gs2 and she has it so bloated and stock and its a mess yet it seems so smooth regardless.
When I try to think of advantages I think for me is full front and back white color. Resolution doesn't bother me as I've come to realize.
Has anyone had both and noticed snap pier ping times and internet speed? As little difference between the two I have a feeling when playing with the gs2 that it just loads faster and quicker after clicking a page or refreshing this forum.
I know the development is no where near nexus but I've also come to realize I'm not as addicted to flashing roms as I used to be and am just stuck with one.
Battery I hear is great and with 2100 battery from Verizon nexus I'm sire will be awesome.
I know there are plenty of threads of this but I feel they haven't really been addressed recently in couple months.
Any T-Mobile users who have used both phones . How do you feel about the few things I mentioned and anything else you would like to add.
It just bothers me when I play with the two next to each other as awesome as the nexus is its like I can't help myself wanting the gs2 which makes me regret not getting one when I got the nexus and blew all that money.
However at this point I could defibetly do a straight trade and so just wanna hear some feedback.
Thanks guys.

You could say I'm growing up and will be working full time when I graduate and will probably be even less involved soon.
Maybe having a T-Mobile phone with actual radios designed to be used here is just stabler then an imported nexus . Maybe not.
Ics is great not gonna lie. But its a lot like other things. You get bored so I guess one thing is I don't necessarily need the latest software because to me I feel the gs2 is quite good already.

Many times good software can make up for hardware. I don't own a Gnex myself but I've read good things about how smooth it runs. They'll always get the best vanilla android software as well. Camera quality (8mp vs 5mp) and no sd card slot are probably the biggest concerns with it.
You can always check out their forum and see how people like it.

I sold my T989!
So today I sold my T989 on Craigslist for $345. I had $60 extra and I just ordered it from the play store.
I think I got lucky I sold it for 345, because some used in mint condition T989s on eBay are now going for about $300.
I'll let you know what I think about it. I can always come back to T989 if I don't like it. I'm sure the resale value of the GNex will go up if the ban is put in full effect!
You can go to other threads, gsmarena, etc., and see the phone spec differences.
Just a couple things that might be a little subtle from just looking at the specs .....
The S2 has faster HPSA, 42 MBS theoretical VS 21 on the Gnexus. Most PHONES can't take advantage of that speed by themselves (or users don't). It makes a difference for me, as I hotspot and run a computer off of my tmobile connection. You do need to be in a tmo 42 mbs area for this to be useful, however, so, if you're not, this feature might not be "worth it" for you.
PENTABAND? What provider do you use, are you looking to do contracts? Straight Talk (att and tmobile) and tmobile itself, offer great pay per month contracts (plenty of posts on the ST $45 unlimited everything plans). The S2 is faster ON TMOBILE, but, while it can run on ATT for voice, data is very slow. The nexus is fast on both ATT and Tmobile.
Pentaband is a good feature if you are looking to switch between att and tmo (maybe one gets better reception when you're at school, the other when you're at home ?).
A THOUGHT HERE is the ATT S2 SKYROCKET, apparently, it runs ATT fast natively, AND, can be flashed to the Tmo version (Tmo S2 doesn't have the same radio, so doesn't work the other way)
As others have mentioned, more developer support for the GN, less for the S2, but, ... the S2 has lots of good roms too.
SD CARD - is "WORTH" it to me. I am in hotels a lot, have a large collection of blu ray DVDs I've converted using DVD Catalyst, and have many on micro SD cards ... and I can use my phone as a movie player if the hotel (or if I go to a friends house) TV has HDMI.
The built in memory on the GN is not so small that its a big hinderance, I can still fit a movie or two and hundreds of hours of songs, so, long as you plan you're fine ... removeable SD allows you to bring your entire song collection and dozens of movies.
That's useful for me, might not be "worth it" for you.
Both are great phones, FOR ME, the Nexus is much more versitile if you're looking to maximize pay as you go plans and carrier useage, the S2 if you are looking for pure data speed and SD is a little stronger.
Good luck with your choice, and let us know how it turns out!
Besides getting software releases first, why would anyone choose a Gnex over a s3? Development? Prolonged support? Hate for Touchwiz? Had plenty of development and support for my Captivate. Software can only do what the hardware can support. Why limit your capabilities? Less ram, only a 5MP camera, and slower processor. I waited 3+ months for s3 instead of getting a Gnex.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
Honestly the only reason i can ever see anyone picking the gnex over the siii these days is for the dev support (Jb and other updates right away) and the attractive price it is offered for in the states if you buy from the play store. Otherwise theres nothing else.
Prolonged support? Galaxy S III will have it as well, the support is still in its infancy though
Hate for touchwiz? There's always Nova/Apex Launchers for that
Development? Whatever the Gnex gets, the GS3 will likely get it too at some point
Software updates first? Galaxy S III will always get the samething eventually, JB builds are progressively getting more stable
It's really short-term benefits vs. long-term gains. If you like the short-term benefits and the cheaper price tag, Galaxy Nexus is for you.
Another thing you might add is that I can easily get 16-20 hours out of my phone. It's a very solid built phone with fantastic support. I own the unlocked GSM model sold by Google. I just bought the S3 because it's so damn sexy. The GNex is nice, just not as slim and sexy as the S3.
IMO the GNex is the all-round best phone out. Some other phone are better in certain areas, but the GNex really does what it needs to very well.
I paid $100 for my s3 from ATT and I can easily get 20+ hours out of my battery.

you'll be waiting a long time my friend. I suggest rooting now and trying aokp jb. Its pretty damn stable for a preview.
If developer support wasn't as strong as it currently is on the s3 I would definitely be considering the gnex though.

id guess late September to November at the earliest
On a side note, cm10 just released its nightlies. I'm running it now and its pretty stable
You might want to ask this question in the GNEX forum. You're asking why choose a Nexus over an S3. But most of us have chosen an S3 over a GNEX which is why we are in this forum. I guarantee you'll hear a whole different range of answers over there. lol
But hoenstly, GNEX is last year's hardware and even then, even the SGS2 matched it in *some* harwdware specs. Other than updates and some really good dev support there really isn't much else. Perhaps this year's round of Nexus devices may look more promising
At the end of the day its all choice though.
Hello all!
It'd be nice to get some guidance on my upgrade (Yes, i know some just think.. "aww ****, to hell with all these ppls upgrade posts" so if that person is you, don't bother givin me **** for moving on. everyone does. thanks.)
First of all,
It sucks balls to leave this awesome community.
I've learned a sh*t-ton about my Epic and many other things from some very respected people, who all friggen rock. lol.
Soo, onto my topic & small dilemma.
The upgrade date is Dec. 1st, 2012. Although, I love the style & feel of my Epic, I may be heading towards something a bit different. I have gone down to the Sprint store and checked out some really cool devices but I'm kind of sitting here scratching my head because I'm very picky, luckily though, I was (offf coursee) drawn to the Galaxy S III.
Given its lightening fast 1.5GHz dual-core processors,2100 mAh Lithium Ion battery (9hrs talk time), beautiful (yet kinda big) display (4.8" to be exact), the JB OS, 16/32GB memory, 2GB RAM and other things here and there. Now, the Note II, damn dude, talk about a big display. That one takes the cake. Idk if I could really be happy/satisfied with such a monster display ... 5.5" ?? & I know thats not THAT much bigger than the S III but in hand you'll see the difference.
On the other hand, theS Pen™, 3100 mAh Lithium Ion battery (15hrs talk time), 1.6 GHz Samsung Exynos Quad-core processors alone sounds damn good to me. The only thing that bothers me (obviously) is the bigger display.. So I'm considering other devices because these 2 devices give me a headache sometimes lol.
Anyway, my options & opinions are open for anything.. I'm not tooo picky and my mind is NOT set on just those 2 phones.. I was just throwing them out there because I like 'em both.
One thing..
Don't even think about mentioning the iPhone's, that is one phone I'd just piss on nd save the p.o.s as a weapon against the zombies, then let those retards have at it (hopefully piss on it too.)
So, apart from that, I'd like to hear some input from you guys n gals.
&maybe even whoever has upgraded from the Epic and is happy with their pick.. Your wisdom, knowledge & opinions are appreciated! either way its all good so let me know! Thank you in advance.

Why not still stick with keyboards? America variants of S3 ALL SUCKS to me. Now on market you can have LG Mach, Moto Photon Q and (later) Verizon Stratosphere 2... And if I were you I would definitely first consider a Nexus 4 (all powerful and better than S3, though have to wait for a bit)

Trust me bro my eyes have been open for some decent devices with physical keyboards that have at least like dual processors, so far I haven't seen much.
Prolly because I have Sprint nd Sprint doesn't have the biggest selection of pretty good phones (like the Nexus). I wish. I don't see many disadvantages with getting the SGSIII, imo. But everybody feels different.

Your best bet is still the 2 threads in General that I recommended to you. But the S3 is awesome but you will miss the keyboard for a few months. Samsung seems to have listened and fixed everything we complained about of both Epics S and S2.

Yes I've been reading through those threads the last couple days or so. Its hard to say, because if Id like to keep the physical keyboard then, to my knowledge, I have one choice: Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE. Unless I were to go with the S III. Are you happy with the S III?

I am very happy with the S3. It is light years ahead of the Epic. I will not lie and say I don't miss my keyboard but the voice to text is really very good and getting used to the on screen keyboard in landscape.

Yeah, exactly, on one side of the coin it's new improved technologies and all. Then on the other, there's no keyboard but I figure i'll get used to that.
Kenny, I believe your just the man for guidance here lol. You have great knowledge on this and you switched from the Epic to the SIII. Like I said in my op, I'm looking for input from someone who has done that.
So I suppose i'm asking you if you think the SIII might be the one for me.. ?
Since your happy with the switch and you've been a big help from the start with me.
Thank you.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=34349652
Although, this is before my upgrade, could I just simply go in and buy the phone and activate it on my upgrade day (Dec. 1st) ??
lol don't really kno how that works.
Thanks.

No. They can't give you that price without an eligible upgrade line. You will get used to the keyboard or lack there of. The phone is truly amazing with 4 times the RAM and 16 times the phone storage plus an available sd card slot. When I got it all I did was root and run stock for a month because if was so damn fast and smooth. You won't be disappointed. Call Sprint to see if you can move your upgrade up a week.

I called and got it figured out. I think tmrw my upgrade will be eligible if I pay the $50. If I send my Epic to them, they said I'll get $28 for it and the $50 will be billed to my sprint account next pay. So, basically, if I go for it, I'll be paying $72 for the early upgrade and a new SIII not bad eh? It sounds like a deal. I can't imagine 4x the RAM lol that is a huge improvement, not to mention the other awesome specs and features that come with it.
It very well may be the SGSIII for me... Hey and if it is maybe Ill be bugging you even more for help
Im sure I'll decide to root it and flash a nice stock rom.

Hmmm...I may release something this weekend over there and let The People support it as they have here. The Epic community are the best.

Outstanding! I knew you'd figure it out, your the mastermind of operations! haha
I LUCKILY received my SIII today, at first they told me they were sold out and I got there an hour after they opened! No one had even gone there and gotten one yet... AND THEY WERE SOLD OUT?! wtf?..
So, since they love me oh so dearly there, they had a couple stashed away and grabbed one for me. Like I said, luckily. lol
I had a question though, maybe you have the answer lol, do you know if the SIII is root-able withoutt Odin via starting the Odin flash counter ? Or should I not worry about it and just buy a usb jig when the time comes?
Thanks Kenny
