Question regarding Sprint data... - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I'm on Vacation and Sprint has literally no signal here, but I got a Verizon 3G roaming PRL on my device. Anyways, I've been roaming alot since I got here (I was at the beach and Tropical Storm Debbie left me inside most of the time) and I see that now I've used 500 MB in four days!!! I've read that people have gotten booted from Sprint for using 200MB in a month of roaming. I'm scared now that Sprint will cancel my line! I haven't heard anything but if they do cancel me do they cancel just the roaming line or the entire plan? I'm really hoping they don't cancel me. lol!
EDIT: manually put 60687 PRL back on my phone, suffering the 1 bar of 1x signal/no signal now. Just hope it's not too late for me.

You'll be fine. use as much sprint data as you can when you get back in a service area to ensure that the majority of your data is on sprint. It's only the line, not the plan.

Thanks, will do!

I have been using Verizon prl the .0001 one since December and I use anywhere from 3-5 Gb a month. Have yet to have a problem at all.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA

I used mine with Verizon hacked prl for 3 months. I finally got a call. My problem was for two months I didn't use sprint towers for a majority of my data usage. So definitely use sprint data slot as well
sent from my BAD A$$ Epic touch

Yeah I used 2.5GB on roaming and never heard a peep from sprint. I'm assuming because I used a lot more on sprint's 3g.

[Q] sprint slow data speeds

so i have been thinking about this a while now, my 3g speeds are between 100 kbps to 400 if i am in a very strong area and my 4g speeds are like 1-6 megs most of the time though are around 3. my buddy has 3g and he is consistantly getting 3 megs. keep in mind that is tmobile. thinking of changing to them even with a cap after they throttle my speeds i believe i still will be faster than sprints "unlimited data" anyone else feeling this.
Welcome to the "now network". When i first got my evo last June, I would easily get 1.5-2mbps down all day. Sometime around November of last year, speeds began to drop. Since then, I have NEVER got above 100kbps up or down ever. I have full bars at my house (tower one block away) and still cant get above 100kbps. When I switch to the verizon prl, at home I have 0-1 bars on verizon, and I can still pull 2mbps easily. Sprint's network is just ridiculous.
how to use switch to verizion prl is it safe how does it work any links would be helpful i would love to at least get a meg or so lol... a bit rediculous and sprint wonders why i will never pay my bill on time.
their towers may be down since they are "trying to upgrade" their network to EVDO revB, i have the same issue however the past week there have been "Sprint Rapid Response" Trucks working on the Tower in my area
i have had that issue about a month ago i couldn't make a phone call, recieve a phone call send a text mesage nothing for a 6 days and they told me that it would be up soon and chatted with them and they told me to call a sprint customer service rep and i told them how the hell am i supposed to do that with no phone lol.. bright ass customer service reps we have to work with here on the "now network" NEVER OPERATING NETWORK IMO.

Not exactly. When running the verizon prl, you are ALWAYS on verizon, for calls texts and data. Use it too much and Sprint could charge you and terminate your service.

Again, be careful with it. I only use it once in a while when i'm at work and need to use my phone for things like youtube and such.
don't use that prl, i I used it for a month and my bill came out to 250 dollars, just call sprint data support and have reset your data or to reactivate your handset through their system. it works they did its mine. I was just getting around 200 to 400 kb Max. now its from 1.2 to 2.5. something happens to the phone when you install different rom to ur phone. slow 3g mostly happen to rooted phones....let me know if this work for u

3g speeds??????

What's up guys. Alright last Friday my wife and I headed to Sprint and bought a couple of phones. She got the Iphone 4S and I got the Epic Touch. Previously we were with Verizon.... she had the Inc2 and I had the Thunderbolt.
When we were at Sprint I asked the rep. about signal strength and he said that Sprints towers ran off the same towers as Verizon.
When I first started messing with my Epic and went on the net I was at work and the data speeds were ridiculously slow. So I thought I gotta root this thing.
Well I'm rooted.... oc'ed to 1.5 with performance gov. I just googled "slow data speeds for the Epic 4g touch" it took a little over 5 minutes to just open up the Google page. I'm at work.... in a 3g only area... and with my HTC Thunderbolt it might take 10 seconds to open up that same page.
This is freaking me out a little. I can't believe tho that all of you out there with 3g only are having this same problem. When I googled this issue I read about guys starting a petition to send to Sprint due to the slow data speeds.
Would I would like to know before I call Sprint and raise hell is is there a fix or a workaround for this?? My wifes Iphone is also having terrible data speeds.
Pretty concerned about this.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like its time for a new prl and roam control. This phone is known for slow 3g data speeds. Actually sprint is known for slow data speeds. How are your wifes speeds on the ip4s? Dont forget, you always have 14 days to opt out of the contract or exchange the phone.

I tried to explain to him that the 3g speeds have been bad since I bought the phone last Friday.
Wondering now how I'm going to get out of this contract..........this sucks.

If you are a data whore you are going to pay a lot more at other carriers. Sprint is the only unlimited.
This is too much fu#@ing fun. Now my phone is jacked. I took the phone back to stock before I called Sprint. After complaining about data speeds the service rep had me key in the dialer the pound symbol twice I think and some numbers whatever. Well now I have NO data. We tried over and over to activate my phone. Obviously tho you can't do it without a signal.
So he quickly said there must be an outage in your area and he will be sending out a service tech and calling me back in a half hour.
After an hour I called back. Went thru almost the same thing with someone else. Now I need to take my phone in for service.
I called Sprint to ***** about slow data speeds and now I don't have data. I'm laughing just typing this........

Welcome to the wonderful world of sprint customer service. That whole sending out a tech to your area is a sham. Really sprint is that the best you can come up with? I have been told that NUMEROUS times and never have I ever heard anything back regarding the techs results, or if a tech even came out. Complaints on data speeds just arent that high on their priority list. If you have issues with the speeds now, they are just going to frustrate you even more later. If you really love the phone and want sprints unlimited. There are options to improve data speeds, like roaming on verizons network, which we do for free. If you are more interested in that I can send you in the right direction.

if you use the pro each your data. using verizon's hacked prl will be great as far as speeds go. but if you use more than 300 mb you have a chanceof getting a letter telling you to quit. I am on over a gigabyte right now and was about 4 gigs last month and no letter. but you are taking a risk. if you disregard the letter and continue to use it they can terminate you for too much roaming. 3g is great in my area even without the hacked prl. by the way if you are on the hacked prl every minute you talk comes out of your roaming minutes. except for the regular nights and weekends.

Yeah. I'll just do that. I'm tired of the speeds I get here. It's less than 50kb/s with 3g coverage. It's ridiculous.
It really depends on your tower imho. 3g speeds do suck a lot of the times depending on which tower youre connected to.
In my house, i get 4g and 3g speeds (~10mbps / 1.3 mbps) but i go down the street 1/4 of a mile and bam no 4g and 3g speeds of ~100-300 kbps...
Really depends. Might want to invest in an airave or just drop and switch to tmobile / Vzw.
So you are going from bad to worse ?
If anything sprint is beter from AT&T and Tmobile. Those 2 have 2gb data limit and increased termination fees, not to mention their horrible customer services. I had AT&T for 7 years, and Tmobile for 6 years and must say sprint is bad but compered to those 2, sprint is golden.

Well after spending about an hour on the phone with service techs at Sprint yesterday I now have working data.
I was just sitting here messing with the phone(I have wifi at home) went into Sprint zone hit activate and now the phone is reactivated. I was on the phone with three different techs last night after the first one borked data. Pulling batteries, punching in numerous codes in the dailer, rebooting etc.
So whatever...... I'm just happy to have data back......and I did just get three voicemails from the tech that messed up data on my phone. I feel pretty stupid myself for not just trying to activate the phone on my own.
I really don't want this to turn into a hating on Sprint thread. I've had a rough experience with them so far but everyone makes mistakes. Now back to getting this thing rooted again and find another badass ROM and kernel to flash and get to roaming!!

[Q] Roaming Penalty

so I see that excessive roaming will prompt sprint to give you the boot with no warning but how does it work with family plans. if one person on the plan roams too much does the entire account get canceled or just that one phone number?
Just the line that abused it. Also the send you a letter telling you to stop first

I got a letter from Sprint myself after I messed with my RTSP and HTTPD server settings. I read an article about speeding up network access like at my desk at work on an AT&T (roaming) network. After about 2 weeks of enjoying better coverage and speeds, I got a love letter from Sprint.
At first I had no clue, then I remembered I had messed with those settings. Turns out I was ONLY roaming with them. So now I put them back to stock and no issues with Sprint.
Actually, on Calkulins latest v1.2 ICS Rom, with the FC18 modem, I get 3G at my work where I only had a 1X network data connection before!
thanks for the info

Different devices, different areas, and different radios all play a part in your signal strength. There is not a one-size-fits-all, so try different modems, using each one a couple of days, and keep an eye on your signal strength.

Not sure what you mean by "it"
Wait...what does roaming mean in this case? I am going to get this phone soon, and I have been out of the loop for this community for a few months now. Is roaming a term for something mod related or does it just mean being in a roaming area.
My concern is that when I had the Epic, I rode the subway everyday and every 3 seconds my phone says "You are roaming" and does the annoying sound and screen, have they disabled this?

It just means you are using another carrier's tower, not Sprint's... The default Sprint proxy settings on the phone are fine, but you can hack them and get into trouble if you do this.
I know this thread is somewhat old, but I wanted to share that the second letter I recently received from Sprint was one informing me that my account WILL be terminated as of July 17th.
I tried numerous times to explain that when I am at work, I am ALWAYS on roaming data. I use WiFi at home, so the only time I typically user Sprint 3G is during my commute. They said there were NO exceptions and the decision comes from Corporate and is FINAL. 18 years with my company and 8 in good standing with Sprint on different phones... And they axed me! My Epic 4G Touch apparently is rather data hungry...
So beware, peeps...

You have be roaming at least 75% of the time (not an exact number, just ballpark) in order for Sprint to boot you.
Basically, while you're roaming, Sprint is having to pay the other carrier for your usage. If you're using the other network more than Sprint, it's not profitable to keep you.

Yes, the letter says 300MB or the majority of 3G data. There were 2 months since November 2011 where
My roaming data % was more than non-roaming.
The thing that kills me is that my usage pattern hadn't changed across the last 3 phones I've had with them. The Google Play Store and all the apps connecting in the background had changed my consumption no doubt...
My E4GT is my first Android phone though, and they even made me pay an extra $10 per month for "premium data" with this phone because it is a "smartphone" (just like my previous Blackberry Curve)!
Wtf? Faaaaaaaq Sprint

Do they make you pay an ETF when they do this? I know for most, roaming isn't an issue but some are on the edge of the network and are more likely to roam. Would kind of suck if they had to pay an ETF.

Sprint did offer to waive the ETFs (2 off them) AND any recurring charges for the last month of service... Actually, on AT&T, I'm now getting better coverage and speed, both in and out of my workplace, and with the wife's employee discount we are paying less overall.
3GB data plan on each phone... Most I've ever used on Sprint is like 1.2GB.
One of the best things about the AT&T data plan is that if you go over the limit, for $10 they automatically add another GB, not cancel your account. And roaming data only applies to international data usage.

If your Sprint 3G data is more than your Sprint 3G roaming data, then they won't usually take any action other than maybe warning letters.
I'm sure my usage was costing them money, but my usage was costing ME plenty of money too!
I was happy about no ETFs and the free last month... but there should be legal implications for them since they don't report any of this on your invoice OR USAGE DETAILS. When I asked why there was no mention of the roaming data issue on my bill, they said that some things changed earlier this year, and their Marketing and Billing departments weren't on the same page yet.
This a$$ reaming was brought to you by Sprint... Bringing a whole new meaning to the term "Unlimited"...
GFY, Sprint. I hope you face legal action for screwing your customers over like this
Sent from somewhere in Galaxy SII...
The problem is, there is no way to tell from your bill whether you are roaming on Sprint's network (as in, out of your home calling area) or roaming OFF of Sprint's network.
"Changes earlier this year" is BS. Their bill has stated "Sprint 3G Roaming - Unlimited" forever.

10 plus year Sprint customer checking in here!
I've been using the EK02 modem combo'ed with PRL 11115 and Mr. Greg's ROAM Control for almost 3 months now, set to roam only and I haven't gotten a single letter, threat or anything!
I'm actually hoping to get one, I want out of my Sprint contract without paying the ETF, I'm sick of the slow 3G data speeds. Now before someone says well you've been a customer for over 10 years and you have resigned the contracts so you have no one else to blame but yourself, blah blah blah, back before the HTC EVO 4G, I didn't have these issues.
Over the past 3 years Sprints network has done to hell. My Samsung Instinct and my Palm Pre were FAST. I used them as modems for my laptop and everything else, NO problems. Browsing on them was FAST, no problems. Apps online on them, no problems. I get my EVO and its SLOW! That was about when 4G was coming so I waited it out and yep we finally GET 4G locally but only downtown. I keep hearing promisses of expansion blah blah blah so I renew picking up the Epic 4G Touch, oh, no more 4G expansion blah blah, LTE is the next big thing.
Well my Epic Touch is even slower then my EVO was.
Sprint got too big and there network just cant handle it.
My friends ATT Skyrocket blows my phone out of the water speed wise. Hell, just roaming to Verizon I get upward of a meg a second but on Sprint I'm luck to get 100 kbps. Sometimes it bursts to 600+ but it doesnt hold. Sometimes its as low as 20 kbps. Most webpages don't load.
I'm burned out.

Illinois/Chicago People - Help - Slow Speeds?

So this just started yesterday but right now my connection to the network is HORRIBLE. At home where I always averaged a 90ms ping with 25mb down and 4mb up I am now at a 500-1000ms ping with speeds around .5MB down and.5MB up.
I called T-Mobile as I just switched to the Truly Unlimited 4G plan and they said I'm fine, have zero overages, and they were 100% sure I am not being throttled.
Why do I have such horrible slow speeds out of the blue? Stock GS3, Rooted. I restored to a backup I had and that didn't do anything. Phone works flawlessly except for the speeds.
UVALH2 was the last update I applied via OTA/Kies.

Well in 60657 data is fine.. my only guess is they didn't put you on the unlimited 4G plan and you are being throttled because when you call in, they refer to all of their data plans as unlimited. Went to a buddies house in East Dundee (60118) versus my (60008). My data speeds were back to normal and everything was grand. Now when I return home it's back to 56k speeds again. If I call T-Mobile do you think they should know if a tower is having problems?
Just got off the phone with T-Mobile. It appears there is a problem with three of the towers in my area. 84 other people have already called in and they said an engineering team is working on it. I've been on these 56k speeds for the past two days already going on a third. Should I tell them I want my data fee covered for the month or what?
Anyways just glad it's their network and not my phone. Wonder how long this will take.

Im not really big on demanding. I have always found that asking "is there anything you can do for me" works better

You aren't too far from me, I'm in Elk Grove (60007) and I have been getting great speeds, around 20 down. Sorry to hear that you are having problems and hopefully they get the towers near you fixed soon.

To much roaming but i love youc

So a sixth if my regular data is roaming..6gb vs 1.2gb You think ill get the magic letter? I refuse to give up my optimus g.
Same spot except three days ago it started to roam instead of receive regular sprint service. Odd because it switches between the two now. If i get the boot. Gonna have to sell the phone... :/
Also knew radio did help with wifi connections.

How did you use so much data?! Both normal and roaming. Roaming is so slow for me

My prl is 16013 a legitimate corporate 3g roaming prl btw.
And i have one of the nv complete towers on the 247 it is a smr 800 also and it is back hauled by microwave plus only like 20 people live out here.
But what i dont get is three weeks no roaming and now im roaming all the time. Idk what happened even on sprint signal of 1bar i get almost 2mbps and with roaming almost 3.
Thats how i was able to get where im at. There isn't any rules on using my phone to download stuff and then transfer it to my pc . I tether here and there but for web browsing if i need to download its to my phone as that's good enough for me.
Might have to try and lock phone to home only.

corp prl allows 3g roaming.. i went months using 5+gb a year ago before i got a call from sprint and it was a warning. you should look into an airave device if your signals bad

Picking up an LGOG for my wife today, so doing some reading up on it and stumbled across this thread. I can offer some insight. I was using the 00001 (or whatever) PRL on my EvoLTE back in Dec / Jan. They sent a letter and called me a couple of times.
"Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice; 800 min. or a majority of minutes' or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes."
I had two months in a row with over 300 MB of roaming. I used the Verizon PRL when i went to up north (Michigan) because there is no sprint service to speak of where i was going for a few weekends. My friends have Verizon and get phone calls when were in the middle of no-where.
Hope this helps!
