I've been dreading this whole shared data business. Well today while ordering my replacement gnex they mentioned the plans to me so I let them do their whole pitch. Ends up if I suck it up and say buhbye to my unlimited data I can get a way better deal.
Right now I pay $280. Two smart phones at $90 each a dumb phone for $50 and a charge of $50 for some **** about having unlimited plans. If I switch to 10 gigs a month I pay $210. This is great for me since I use roughly 6 gigs tops and the other line uses maybe 1. Just my experience.

How? The guy above you paying $160 has Sprint. Sure it is uncapped and unthrottled but when your peak download is 2mbps in peak hours it Sucks. The guy paying $30 a month gets 5GB of HSPA+, unlimited texts and 100 minutes.
The plans work for them but it does not sound like they will work for you.

Don't quote me on this but I think tiered data plans are coming soon, probably before the summer (iphone 5 release?).
From the past, $15 for 250 MB, $30 for 5GB (?) , and it gets up to $60+ for their "corporate" plans.
Now, that was for 3g so maybe they'll bump up the price a little for 4g. I wouldn't be surprised if they do that because VZW is a soulless, money leeching who*e. Hopefully we can keep riding on the "unlimited" data plan when Verizon changes their policy.

If they take us off of it, VZW terminates it's contract with us. You no longer have an ETA and are free to go.
I Don't think you've actually read the contract and what constitutes termination.
That being said, vzw has a good history of allowing grandfathered pricing.

So if they change a (theoretical) voice plan of 1000 min for $10/month to 10 min for $10/month there is no material affect on you? You get charged for going over min. If you used all or most of 1000 min then you get bumped down to 100 but still use 1000 min you'll have to pay more. Would this not count towards you being able to drop out of your contract either?
If you got the $30/month unlimited plan because you're a heavy user and you use say, ~10GB a month and they change your plan to $30/month for 5GB plus $10/GB over (or whatever they decide the rate to be) you're going to be paying more for the same things you got on your own contract.
I think they would be breaking their end of the contract. Even if they could get away with it, it would mean a lot of bad press. Verizon doesn't want any more of that than they already have.

I used basically the same minute comparison when trying to get out of T-Mobile once they started throttling at 5 gigs. It was a no go for me. Needless to say I was pretty heated since I often used 6-7 gigs and when throttled would get 59kbps on their 3G. Hopefully it doesn't come to that again.

But isn't that in the contract somewhere for T-Mobile? I'm pretty sure somewhere it says they have a soft-cap of 5GBs. I think the scenarios are a little different in this case.

If you have $30 unlimited 4G LTE data now, you will keep it forever. VZW will only force you to change your plan if you upgrade to a device that is incompatible with your current plan. For instance, VZW offered unlimited data on their 3G air cards. That plan has been discontinued but the customers who have it get to keep it on any 3G air card device they purchase. If they want to upgrade to 4G, however, they would have to give up that plan due to plan/device incompatibility. The system would not allow it.

It looks like end of road for at&t unlimited data users. I am finally hit with throttled right after 2gb of usage on my GNex. In tiered plan the same $30 can get you 3gb. So stupid move by at&t and manipulating unlimited users to forfeit their grandfathered plans.
BBB, consumerist or where do we go?
Anywhere but the Galaxy Nexus forums because this issue isn't about the Galaxy Nexus.
Yep, the days of unlimited data are numbered. We're at the mercy of the carriers as they struggle to roll out expensive technology and subsidize expensive phone manufacturer pricing.
Be sure to contact them and complain, also file an FCC complaint (I did.)

Man, I'm glad I left ATT. I pay the same price for both my line with 5GB data (G Nex) on T-Mo and my line with unlimited LTE (Droid Charge) on Verizon that I paid for a single line at ATT.
I got throttled too.
I need to call them and file a FCC complaint.
Using different apn doesn't work. Even swap the sim back to iPhone 3GS still won't lift the block.
I heard changing apn on skyrocket could get around the block, is it?

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
It's all in the fine print. They have customers by the short hairs.
I *think* the way they word those things is they reserve the right to throttle or shape traffic for an account if it appears that they will go over their plan amount before the end of the billing cycle.
I doubt the FCC or anyone else can do much about it.

I got throttled on Cincinnati Bell Wireless after using 100mb of roaming data. Yep you read it right only 100mb. This was also on an unlimited plan. I switched to Verizon almost immediately, just glad I had not purchased my peta-band GN yet like I had planned.

I'm happy VZW hasn't starting pulling this crap. I subscribe to both unlimited data and unlimited tethering and average about 15-20gb's a month. Last year I left AT&T and paid an ETF to jump ship to Verizon while they still offered unlimited. I'm happy I did.

For anyone that has been throttled, have you noticed a loss in battery life?
Because they are throttling you it now takes longer for the phone to download anything so it spends more time transmitting and receiving. Then you have lower battery life. Thats my theory anyways.

Upgrading the dumb one gets you a 2 gig plan on that line. Won't lose your unlimited plans on the existing smartphones. And if you upgrade the smart ones, you still keep the unlimited data. Just don't try to change the overall plan. If you do, you could lose the unlimited data.
Remember, though, they now charge a $30 activation fee on new phones.

Two or more devices (phones, tablets, etc) actually. Cmlusco, Verizon announced Family Share Data plans that will go into effect on June 28th. If you (or anyone you know, SPREAD THE WORD) want to maintain your unlimited data plan you must upgrade by then OR pay full retail on future phones to keep your plan unchanged. The plan breakdown is ridiculous. Give me a bit and I can post a link detailing the new changes.

and
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/06/12/verizon-announces-shared-everything-plans-starting-at-50-for-1gb-of-data-and-unlimited-talktext/
I did some math and anyone switching from a unlimited plan will have the bill increase $30-$60 over before. $720-$1440 over 24 months still feel like a subsidized phone is a good deal?
I would say the best thing about the "shared" data plan is Unlimited talk.
Honestly
shared data should look more like this
unlimited talk+text 1 gig allocation per line with the same 40$ per smartphone line starting at 15 so the share plan starts at $55 and 2 phones would be $95 and the pool would be 2 gig in size. And it scales well.
I fail to see the point of such low caps with tethering and 4g we use it faster and on more devices.
Because of this whole ordeal I am seriously thinking about buying a nexus from google and going to T-Mobile. I can get unlimited there without feeling like i'm taking it up the tailpipe :/

My monthly bill for 2 phones on their truly unlimited plan is only 130 after taxes. Thats counting eip on my note 2. Wifes lg is paid off. Was 140 then. If you ask me.... no matter how you look at it , 60/month ( not counting eip ) is a hell of a lot cheaper than anywhere else.
Now lets do tmobiles math
60/ month for 24 months = $1440
200 down + 480 (20/month for 24 months)= 680
Over 2 years you will have spent $2120
For verizon, not even counting the initial cost of the phone pre-subsidizing ( 300 ), you already spent more lol.
Verizon= $99/month
$99*24= 2376 + 299 for the note2 = $2675
Mind you, tmobile charges 680 outright and verizon charges 699 off contract for the note 2. You can clearly see they get much more money from you and give you less.
Edit. Last I checked verizons unlimited plan was 99. I cant seem to find anything on their website comparable. Going by my usage on tmobile and their (verizons) family share plan..... id be at the 40gb shared plan....ouch! Its even more ! $300/ month for 2 lines unlimited talk/text and 40gb ( 20gb each if split evenly ). Thank god I have Tmobile!
Id chew through 8gb of data alone in a few days just on netflix. My son watches while we are out of the house. Thats not counting my wife who skype video calls her family everyday overseas. How can you survive on only 8?
I even use wifi while im at home and at work too. When I dont, I can hit 60+gb alone! Keep in mind, each rom download is 1gb, 1 netflix movie is 1gb, and pandora / slacker / youtube add up fast too. Heck 1 movie a day puts you at 30gb / month + lol. I got hooked watching Merlin on netflix. That was 86 episodes and I finished it in 2 weeks. I could only imagine how much data id have used if I weren't on my homes fiber line.
Why buy a phone like this if you are limited in how / when you can use it?
Oh and I have LTE at work and pretty much everywhere when I'm out of the house. Can't beat it!

I would love to switch to tmobile but I cant see only saving a few bucks to switch to less coverage ....when I looked originally at tmobile I figures about 160 for all three of us then I found out you have to pay about 200 and 20 bucks a month for each sevice which puts it at about 210 I cant see myself switching to save 10 dollars now if it was the 160 a month for all three I would have switched yesterday like I wanted to

Do you have any insurance on your phones? Are you on post paid or pre paid?

I did have their php protection but recently had a bad experience with asurion. I dropped it on both lines out of principle. She had her phone for 2 years, never used insurance once. I had it for 2 on my galaxy s2..... never used it. 2 years of 7.99/month on 2 lines = 383.92 mind you.The first week i had my note2, i dropped it and broke the screen. Paid the deductible, sent in the phone, and figured all was well. I didnt save any of the tracking numbers they gave me. Well they couldnt find the phone. Billed me another 300 .... wtf. Luckily Tmobile worked with me through it and helped alleviate the $300 charge after weeks of fighting it. It was a "we found it". Oh wait we didnt ". Oh wait we did find the imei in our warehouse. Oh wait again..... we didnt" kind of scenario. Next phones will get a squaretrade warranty methinks.
Had I said I lost it like everyone else would have, they wouldnt have gotten it back anyway. Nope.... im honest... see where it got me?
Anyway my plan breakdown is like this
2x family plan =79.99 /month
2x unlimited data =40 /month
Eip = 20/month
Thats 140+tax but I also get a small discount which knocks about 15-20 off my bill.
Granted im in a major city (Baltimore MD ) and even cricket wireless gets decent coverage. Regardless, I was paying over 220/month for 2 lines on AT&T. That was without unlimited data.
Cricket was 50/ month and tmobile was 60....wasnt a hard choice knowing tmobile had 4g and was getting lte at the time lol

Thanks, I have the same plan but enrolled in Jump on the EIP line because it's cheaper than the insurance alone. What happened with Asurion?

I edited my post with a whole story lol. Lets just say ill never use asurion again. Tmobile basically ate the 300 for me. Excellent customer service. They treated me better than at&t ever did... and I was with them there way back when they were cellular 1, then Cingular Wireless. 15yrs or so.

Thanks, I have used Asurion before when I was on Nextel, I always said that I lost the phone for that exact reason.
T Mobile customer service is outstanding, when I switched from AT&T and had a $200 etf, I told T Mobile and they gave me a bill credit of $120. I wasn't asking them for anything I was switching my mom over from Sprint and mentioned the ETF from AT&T and they just gave me a credit. I wasn't happy with the HTC Sensations I had purchased and they upgraded me 6 months early and again gave me a $120 credit. Outstanding customer service!

You forget that after the phone is payed for your bill will reflect that. With verizon you keep paying for the phone after you payed it off because it is not a separate line item on the bill.
I have both verizon and t-mobile. When I am in a city I use strictly t-mobile, unlimited (real unlimited) data is a hard thing to beat. The t-mobile LTE speeds aren't bad, I can live with them. Verizon LTE speed is just insanely fast.
I drive all over the country for work. I tried using just t-mobile, but once you get outside of a major city you are looking at edge networks at best on data, if at all. I have to use google maps, and pre-caching a journey from New Jersey to California is just not happening.
When t-mobile couldn't cut it on the dark spots between city lights, I got verizon. I will say I was 4G when I drove from New Jersey to California, LTE even almost the whole way.
If you are in a place where you will tend to stay there, and it is a city with 4G/LTE on T-mobile, they are fantastic. Just don't go to nowhere, usa and expect service.
My verizon bill of $110 versus my t-mobile bill of $70-something.
If I had to pick one or the other, i'd choose t-mobile because of the unlimited data, and then figure something else out for getting navigation off-network outside of major cities. My minimum network data is something north of 12 gigs a month and I can't afford buying it from verizon by the megabyte.

All that does make sense but I would be buying a new phone every 2 years or even 1 so I would always be paying the $20 dollars a month per phone idk if I want that and traveling to my wife's parents I would only get 2g there at least that's what the tmobile site shows on the map. ..I appreciate the info guys maybe I'll switch to tmobile after my dads plan is up and see how it is
