I'm new to rooting and installing custom ROMs on my Android (I came from an iPhone and never jailbroke it), but I do have my E4GT rooted now. I just have a question about a specific ROM (Codename ICS 4.0.4): I'm on stock EL29 (rooted), not EL26. When the install instructions below say Flash EL26 stock CWM kernel, will that flash EL26, CWM, and the kernel?
"Install instructions
-Flash EL26 stock CWM kernel via the PDA option in ODIN/Mobile ODIN
-When phone begins reboot, Hold Power + Volume up until boots into recovery.
-Wipe data/factory, cache and dalvik cache
-Flash ROM
-Flash Gapps
-Reboot"

There is a EL26 + CWM repack which will do it all for you. I believe this is the one they're meaning.
When the instructions say that, they are referring to the kernel only.
Flashing the EL26 kernel with CWM is regarded as the most stable repack of clockwork mod recovery to flash ICS roms.
qbking77 did a how-to install vid for that rom specifically:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMZqn-23xEA&feature=plcp
Be sure to watch that vid, sounds like QBking77 says you NEED cyanogenmod 7.2 in order to get CodeName installed

Ah, I see.
But that is for an older version of Codename I believe, and a quite a bit older version at that. Would it be the same for the updated version of 4.0.4? It doesn't really mention anything in the thread about having to previously be on another ROM before flashing this one other than the EL26 Kernel + CWM.

In that case, is that all I need to do in regards to flashing this ROM, or do I need to be on a different rom such as CM9/CM7 before flashing this one?
Nevermind, I'll probably just install the Blazer ROM since there is an updated video tutorial for that one, thanks though guys. I've thanked both of your posts for the help.

Hey all. today I decided to try the blazer 4.0 rom. Im currently on Senzation 2.3 . I followed the instructions completely but the phone got stuck on the galaxy logo screen after rebooting. It would not boot into recovery either. I had to go into download mode and use odin to get it working again. can someone please help me out? would it be an issue with the kernel? Im attaching a screen shot so hopefully it would help. Any kind of help, suggestions, flaming or trolling is much appreciated!!!
Make sure you follow the install instructions in Blazer's OP. My experience with fresh Blazer installs:
-Nandroid
-Wipe /system, /data, /cache
-Install Blazer ROM
-Reboot and let phone site for 10 minutes
-Reboot recovery and install kernel of choice (if different from packaged Blazer kernel)
-Reboot
Good luck. Feel free to poll the large user community for help in the Blazer ROM thread in the Dev section
Make sure you are NOT flashing with the hitman touch recovery that has given allot of people problems including myself.

Hi. Your procedures are just like what i did but no dice for me. will trying doing it again today. Thank you for your help.
If you have not flashed EL29 modem, do so... Then follow steps. After Manuel wipe, I would flash format all zip too. Btw, first boot could take up to 5mins...
I have the same problem when I went from blazer 3.8 to blazer 4.0. It just won't boot pass the galaxy logo. I have since flash a couple if different recoveries (cwm, rogue, etc). I was finally able to make it work blazer 4.0 with I've of them recoveries (but I forgot which one). Only problem now is that it won't work with the blazer 3.8 ROM.
I like the Blazer roms but they are very tricky/troublesome to flash. I don't have a problem with any of the recoveries with the other roms.
Blazer rom install
I've been using Rogue Recovery 1.1.2 (CWM v5.o.2.7) flash blazer roms 3.7. to 4.0 with out a problem also Caulkins roms might try that if your on a different version.
If you get stuck on SGS2 screen after flashing the new ROM, reboot to recovery (volume up + power). Flash the ROM again without wiping anything, then reboot.

I didn't flash calkulins format all zip at first, just did nano, wipe and flash and I was running into the same issue. I finally did a complete format, then flashed calkulins format, then flashed Blazer..worked perfect.
I can Only go into download mode after flashing blazer. it will not let boot into recovery at all.

Yeah that happens to me too. You have to use odin to flash a recovery tar file to the phone. I use the cwm 5.0 tar file.
Hi guys, I have one question. When flashing the rom, should I select wipe data/factory reset option before flash calkulins format all zip or just flashing calkulins format all zip is going to be enough? Also, should I select wipe cache partition option too? I am on stock and this is gonna be my first rom.
How can I install CWM recovery onto ICS ( Cyanogen Mod 9)? Would like to install the blazer rom.
To the best of my knowledge you should one click back to el26 then flash to the new ROM. I see most folks saying to use nandroid to back up then restore your data.
I have not taken the plunge into ICS yet but that's the advice I see most often.
Swyped from my E4GT running Blazer 4.1
I just Mobile Odin to el26cwm kernel, wipe and flash as normal.

OK I will tell you this before you destroy your phone. If you are asking the above question then this mean you have missed a few important threads in xda like how not to brick your phone. My suggestion read some stickies in General, Q&A as well as Development. How to get in and out of ICS to GB and GB to ICS has been well publicized in here.
I say this for your own safety and so that we do not see another I bricked my phone thread... Take some time and check things out... Happy Flashing and say thanks to the kind people of this thread the gave you great answers

Odin has detection problems. ( windows 7 64 bit ) I have used this my AT&T GS2 but on my friends E4GT it has detection problems.
Download mobile Odin from the market and put that .tar on the root of your sdcard then just flash from there.

Make sure you load up the proper drivers for the phone and not assume your AT&T branded G2 drivers should work....
So I finally made the jump to 4.0.4. Mijjah74's "slim n trim" to be precise... Install went great, rom is awesome, I just can't find any information on how to update to the latest version! Do I just go back to el26? Can I "just" go back to el26? If anybody can provide detailed instructions for a newb or at least point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it!
I follow instructions well, but I am clearly a rookie. My apologies if this is in the wrong section or if this has been covered 1,000 times!
Yes, just mobile odin el26 with cwm. When the screen goes off hold power+volume up to boot into recovery, then wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom and reboot. Since it is AOKP based you need to use only el26 with cwm or you'll risk a brick.

Yes. I use internal sd, but mobile odin will find it on either. The safest way to flash to and from ICS is with el26 with official cwm. Everything since el26 including el29 have rogue repacks. The rogue repacks do work, but you run a risk of bricking. Better to be safe than to have bricked phone. Just remember ICS won't boot with el26, so you have to boot into recovery as soon as it starts to reboot. Wipe data/factory reset, wipe both cache and dalvick cache, flash ROM and reboot.

Just use the same instructions on how you got on slim in the first place. It is the only way to flash a AOKP based rom. The ONLY thing you may do when you update from slim to a newer slim is the wipes. A clean install is best, bit no data wiping has worked also.
All in all listen to killaphatboy, he knows what he is talking about, been running our rooms long enough.
Thanks for the help guys!
I am watching a qbking77 "how to" video on flashing the EL26 tar and he mentions you have to be on a Gingerbread rom before you flash to EL26... Does this pertain to m situation since I am just updating to a newer version of of the same rom?
I understand that the update process is the same as the install, but going back to EL29 and reinstalling CWM, just to flash EL26 makes me think that I am performing some unnecessary steps.

You don't need to go back to anything. All you need to do is Odin the EL26 kernel and when it starts to reboot, push and hold power and volume up, that will put you right into recovery without booting into the rom. qbking77 is talking about booting into the from, which you do not need to do. Just push power+ volume up after your blue light flashes and before the splash screen ends.
I started out with (I believe) this rom- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323763 and all was good for months.
When the ICS rom leaked, I figured I'd try it, so I performed a backup in recovery mode and then flashed.
Now, Calkulin has an ICS rom and I wanted to play with that, however the leaked rom didn't have clockwork installed.
I grabbed Rom Manager, flashed CMR, and rebooted into recovery.
I had all the zips on my sdcard and went to flash the Calkulin wiper and the little droid started glowing and then fell over with a !. The log said that the signature couldn't be verified. I tried all 4 of his zips and none of them would flash.
So, I figured I'd just restore my old ROM backup... except that there is no backup/restore in recovery now. There is a restore section in the app, but it doesn't see any of my old backups.
My question is, is there a different recovery manager? Why can't I flash or restore?
you need to flash a custom ics kernel, like rouge, most ics roms should have this baked in already, however if not, you can flash it through odin via download mode, just put the rouge ics tar file in pda slot
Ok, so the leaked rom came with a stock kernel and that's bad...
Now I need to find the Odin flasher and rouge image.
Thanks
Mobile odin el26 with cwm. Rogue repacks are not safe to flash ROMs with. They can flash, but risk a brick. Use el26 and hold power+volume up to reboot into recovery. Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom and gapps. Reboot and you will be good to go.

I just grabbed an ICS kernel off the wiki and it worked just fine.
No CWM with ICS roms.
afaik, none of the ICS roms have CWM bundled yet because CWM is unstable. Did you get CWM straight from ROM Manager, and it worked?
Actually, there is no bundled CWM because we don't have kernel source. EL26 was the last kernel with official CWM. DO NOT USE ROM Manager unless you want a brick.

Hey everyone, I have a few questions:
So I'm on stock GB27 (unrooted) but I am in the process of rooting it right now as we speak, so that shouldn't take long. What I want to do is get onto a safe recovery though to flash this ROM (Vanilla RootBox for E4GT), preferably EL26 recovery (which would be CWM 5.0.2.7 if I remember correctly) because I don't really know how safe AGAT's recovery is to use. The reason I bring up AGAT is because I use a lot of qbking's videos to get me through the rooting/recovery process and the one linked above is for AGAT's.
So I was wondering if anyone could help me get into a safe recovery from GB27 rooted so that I could flash the Vanilla Rootbox rom.
Thanks in advance.

EL26 is completely safe. Just download the Rom zip to your phone. Flash the el26 tar using pc or mobile Odin, reboot into recovery, wipe data, cache, dalvik, flash rom, reboot, enjoy.
Edit: from the rom OP, says you have to flash gapps too. Basically, once in cwm just follow op from there. Good luck!

AGAT Recovery with stock kernel is not good to use.
The EL26 / DirectBoot EL29 Kernel + Recovery is the safest and recommended for flashing all because it's base is gingerbread
and it doesn't have the EMMC corrupt super brick bug.
I'm not entirely sure about Agat's SOURCE built kernel though, I think the source built kernel + recovery is safe for only flashing
mods and extra's. But I've never used it for wiping and flashing roms for GB27.
Tim did a video post on using AGAT's recovery source built kernel and he does say it is safe for only flashing
TW based Roms for the specific firmware it's for.
An example would be
Agat's GB27 Source Kernel recovery for only GB27 roms
or
Agat's GA10 source kernel recovery for GA10
etc
But for sure, it's best to use the safe recoveries or recoveries recommended by the Rom threads.
Hopefully this info helps a bit.

Your information is not entirely accurate. Agat's Kernel IS safe, and you can flash GB27 on GC01 and GB28 Roms as well as GB27. When source first dropped, there were quite a few bugs, however, those have been worked out, and Agat's is VERY good and can be used for a daily driver. It can flash Roms, mods, tweaks, can overclock/undervolt, backup/restore, mount usb, etc, etc. EL26/EL29 are still the default for most OPs, but if you flash a JB Rom, it is certainly safe to flash another Rom using Agat's...
Typically, when handing out advice to other members, you should verify that what you're saying is true. As was stated, you're not entirely wrong, the safe gb kernels are still recommended, however Agats is perfectly fine as well. Stay up to date on development before you spook people away from a perfectly fine kernel
I said agats recovery on STOCK KERNEL is not safe.
And I've been told that agat recovery is only used for flashing mods.
I've also stated I'm not to sure about flashing on agats source
when your switching between ROMs with different build version from GA10 to GB27.

Agats recovery on stock kernel is fine also, these issues were resolved a while ago. So I reiterate, please be up to date on development before making statements which could have a negative effect on a developers work. The majority of failures flashing between versions are user error (not checking md5, not wiping properly, not flashing properly, etc)
If they fail to follow directions, thats not the kernels fault, its theirs.
