[Q] help with flashing Blazer 4.0 - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey all. today I decided to try the blazer 4.0 rom. Im currently on Senzation 2.3 . I followed the instructions completely but the phone got stuck on the galaxy logo screen after rebooting. It would not boot into recovery either. I had to go into download mode and use odin to get it working again. can someone please help me out? would it be an issue with the kernel? Im attaching a screen shot so hopefully it would help. Any kind of help, suggestions, flaming or trolling is much appreciated!!!

Make sure you follow the install instructions in Blazer's OP. My experience with fresh Blazer installs:
-Nandroid
-Wipe /system, /data, /cache
-Install Blazer ROM
-Reboot and let phone site for 10 minutes
-Reboot recovery and install kernel of choice (if different from packaged Blazer kernel)
-Reboot
Good luck. Feel free to poll the large user community for help in the Blazer ROM thread in the Dev section

Make sure you are NOT flashing with the hitman touch recovery that has given allot of people problems including myself.

Hi. Your procedures are just like what i did but no dice for me. will trying doing it again today. Thank you for your help.

If you have not flashed EL29 modem, do so... Then follow steps. After Manuel wipe, I would flash format all zip too. Btw, first boot could take up to 5mins...

I have the same problem when I went from blazer 3.8 to blazer 4.0. It just won't boot pass the galaxy logo. I have since flash a couple if different recoveries (cwm, rogue, etc). I was finally able to make it work blazer 4.0 with I've of them recoveries (but I forgot which one). Only problem now is that it won't work with the blazer 3.8 ROM.
I like the Blazer roms but they are very tricky/troublesome to flash. I don't have a problem with any of the recoveries with the other roms.

Blazer rom install
I've been using Rogue Recovery 1.1.2 (CWM v5.o.2.7) flash blazer roms 3.7. to 4.0 with out a problem also Caulkins roms might try that if your on a different version.

If you get stuck on SGS2 screen after flashing the new ROM, reboot to recovery (volume up + power). Flash the ROM again without wiping anything, then reboot.

You're flashing calkulins format all zip, after wipe, and before flashing the rom....right?

I didn't flash calkulins format all zip at first, just did nano, wipe and flash and I was running into the same issue. I finally did a complete format, then flashed calkulins format, then flashed Blazer..worked perfect.

I can Only go into download mode after flashing blazer. it will not let boot into recovery at all.

Yeah that happens to me too. You have to use odin to flash a recovery tar file to the phone. I use the cwm 5.0 tar file.

Hi guys, I have one question. When flashing the rom, should I select wipe data/factory reset option before flash calkulins format all zip or just flashing calkulins format all zip is going to be enough? Also, should I select wipe cache partition option too? I am on stock and this is gonna be my first rom.

[Q] How to flash ICS 4.0.4 rom updates?

So I finally made the jump to 4.0.4. Mijjah74's "slim n trim" to be precise... Install went great, rom is awesome, I just can't find any information on how to update to the latest version! Do I just go back to el26? Can I "just" go back to el26? If anybody can provide detailed instructions for a newb or at least point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it!
I follow instructions well, but I am clearly a rookie. My apologies if this is in the wrong section or if this has been covered 1,000 times!
Yes, just mobile odin el26 with cwm. When the screen goes off hold power+volume up to boot into recovery, then wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom and reboot. Since it is AOKP based you need to use only el26 with cwm or you'll risk a brick.

I have a similar question...when you say "just mobile Odin el26 with CWM", do you mean place that version of EL26 onto the SD card?

Yes. I use internal sd, but mobile odin will find it on either. The safest way to flash to and from ICS is with el26 with official cwm. Everything since el26 including el29 have rogue repacks. The rogue repacks do work, but you run a risk of bricking. Better to be safe than to have bricked phone. Just remember ICS won't boot with el26, so you have to boot into recovery as soon as it starts to reboot. Wipe data/factory reset, wipe both cache and dalvick cache, flash ROM and reboot.
Here is direct link yo el26 with cwm: http://db.tt/0QJkleJR

Just use the same instructions on how you got on slim in the first place. It is the only way to flash a AOKP based rom. The ONLY thing you may do when you update from slim to a newer slim is the wipes. A clean install is best, bit no data wiping has worked also.
All in all listen to killaphatboy, he knows what he is talking about, been running our rooms long enough.
Thanks for the help guys!
I am watching a qbking77 "how to" video on flashing the EL26 tar and he mentions you have to be on a Gingerbread rom before you flash to EL26... Does this pertain to m situation since I am just updating to a newer version of of the same rom?
I understand that the update process is the same as the install, but going back to EL29 and reinstalling CWM, just to flash EL26 makes me think that I am performing some unnecessary steps.

You don't need to go back to anything. All you need to do is Odin the EL26 kernel and when it starts to reboot, push and hold power and volume up, that will put you right into recovery without booting into the rom. qbking77 is talking about booting into the from, which you do not need to do. Just push power+ volume up after your blue light flashes and before the splash screen ends.

Install CWM from AOKP w/ TWRP

Hello,
Am presently running AOKP Milestone 6 with TWRP recovery & want to flash the Blazer ICS ROM. QBKing77 suggests flashing Blazer from CWM 5.0.2.7, but I'm not sure how to install CWM from TWRP. I am thinking I simply need to download the tar file to my SD card, then flash via Mobile Odin. Not sure that's correct or where that will leave me...
Also thought maybe I can flash CWM as a zip from TWRP. Again, not sure that's correct or where that will leave me either.
Any definitive help would be appreciated. Been reading for hours! Thanks so much!
I have the same problem/issue, would welcome some advice. Previously bricked (BLOD) now new phone, don't want to relive that experience.

Keep in mind though that this is the Epic 4G Touch forum. Looks like you might be running an EVO? Just a heads up...
not any more, profile up date. I was running a Blazer rom, then flashed another rom and did not pay attention and BLOD. Gonna stick w/Phantom ROM unitl this brick then getsfixed, but would love to use TWRP.
After some discussion in agats thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767421), I decided on the following method of installing agat recovery & flashing the Blazer ICS ROM, & it worked like a charm:
1- download newest agat kernel from OP & install on sd
2- flash agat kernel using Mobile Odin
3- as soon as splash screen appears on reboot, pull battery
4- power up into new agat recovery, wipe, & flash ROM
On a side note, just to be super safe, I used Calkulin's Format All instead of manually wiping.
These are the steps simplified. If anyone needs more detail, just ask. Thanks! Hope that helps someone...
Thanks to QBKing77 for the many videos from which I gathered enough info to give this method a shot, & agat63 for your support!

Ready to flash from stock for 1st time but few questions.

Hey everybody.
I used to flash all sorts of roms on my old galaxy vibrant but I bought a new t989 a few months ago and I want to go to a custom from the stock tmob bloatware infested ICS. I already rooted via odin and installed clockwork recovery, which comes up just fine with the usual volume and power combo so i'm good there.
My question is should I flash my first rom (probably jedi mind trick 5 or x1,or if anyone knows a daily driver ready jelly bean??)
via clockwork mod like on my vibrant? or do I use twrp which I also have via goo manager? I prefer cwm because I am familiar with how to wipe cache, reset and flash with it but I can't figure out why some mods recommend one or the other.
Also,
I keep seeing some roms that come with a radio zip and was wondering if all roms require this or is it just certain roms?
Thanks in advance for any help. I just don't want to wreck my phone the first time. Remember, I've flashed a million times on my vibrant but never on my t989 so any pointers or heads up would be appreciated.
Get darkside wipe scripts (both wipe cache and super wipe)
Go ahead with the Jedi X1 ROM its very stable and fast as hell
But if you want Jelly Bean I recommend Galaxy SBean v8 or Liquidsmooth rc8 they're the most stable JB ROMs from what I experienced
Remember to always wipe dalvic cache and fix permissions (darkside cache wipe) after flashing a new ROM
After you flash your ROM and Gapps then boot that's when you can flash kernels, mods, and apk's so it would have a lesser chance of a soft brick
Happy Flashing!

Cool. Thanks for the reply. I went and grabbed super wipe and cache wipe. So essentially, I just put those two on my sd and flash like I do a rom zip from recovery and then flash the rom itself and do a darkside cache wipe after new rom is installed before restarting and booting for the first time? Do I still need to do factory reset/wipe or is that part of the scripts? I have the goo app so I can use twrp instead since it's recommended for almost all roms I will be installing. Any major reason why, besides that it has touch function and backup renaming? Is it safe to install from the goo app on stock rom?
I think I will probably try one of the jellybean roms you suggested. I just didn't want random reboots, and I heard that's an issue with jelly bean roms but I think that might have been specific to aokp ones or something. Occasional FCs aren't too big of a deal though.
One other thing though... how do I fix permissions? I kept reading about that but never did it. Do you mean in recovery or under superuser?
how to properly flash a rom

just follow that and you should be fine.
you can fix permission in recovery. its under advanced in cwm and twrp.

Ok thanks. He seems to recommend not using the darkside scripts. I have a slightly older CWM 5.0.2.6 that I did via odin BTW so do I fall into the 'don't' use darkside category or does he mean anything after 5.0.2.7? I don't mind wiping cache and dalvik manually and doing all the formats if that's the case.
Do I fix permissions after I have booted the rom and waited 10 mins and restarted back into cwm or before I boot it for the first time?

I usually do it after flashing. And you don't need to do it every single time. Also, there's no need to follow everything down to the letter when you flash, wipe cache/dalvik/factory reset/wipe system/fix permissions/sit for 10 mins/reboot/reboot again/etc. Flashing is like cooking. As long as you don't deviate too much from the recipe, you'll get edible food (or a working ROM). If it doesn't work out, just toss the food out and try again (softbricked phone, reflash). If you try something stupid, you'll set your kitchen on fire when you don't have insurance (comparable to hard bricking your phone).
I usually wait till I've restored all my apps before fixing permissions, and then sometimes I don't if everything is working fine. As for recovery, I know you're familiar with CWM, but I'd recommend spending some time using TWRP. It's really great. You don't need the scripts with TWRP, but since TWRP lets you cue up zips, you can set it to do super wipe, ROM, gapps, and cache wipe all in one go. Kinda cool. And if you're itching to try jelly bean, AOKP JB milestone 1 is stable and smooth. There are even a couple custom kernels for it and CM10 (which has also reached a stable version, though I haven't tried it).
Sent from my beastly Galaxy S 2.
Dark side super wipe and cache wipe work perfectly on 5.0.2.6! That's how I got PACman ROM on my phone. I didn't bother with fix permissions. Well, I would say don't worry unless the instructions specify to do so.
Either way, I like CWM because I used it on my Samsung Galaxy Ace. Its just the wipes are broken for this phone so the scripts have to be used and work perfect. Happy flashing!

no it's fine to use the scripts w/ cwm 5. just don't use the scripts on cwm 6. that's what he meant.
i usually fix permission after the first reboot & waiting 10-15 mins.
i second the twrp recommendation...however if you're flashing something old, then cwm is the way to go. i haven't had any problems flashing anything in cwm. the latest twrp however failed me after i tried to flash a gb theme for jugg lol.

Ok, just wanted to make sure on that one.
Thanks for all the input everybody. Hopefully I will get a chance to do my flash over the holiday. I plan on going with the Sbean V8. Really all of the roms out look excellent but this one looks good for a JB daily driver. I went ahead and downloaded Jedi X1 too though in case the sbean doesn't work out for whatever reason. I have to tether my phone at home for internet so I thought it might be good to have a backup just in case PDAnet doesn't want to work.
Is twrp ok to install from Goo manager on my stock rom or should I flash a new rom and then use it from then on? I just want to make sure it won't conflict with the stocker or the CWM that I have on it already.

I got Sbean v8 installed and working just wonderfully! I used CWM for my install with the darkside superwipe and cache wipe scripts. Everything went fine and i'm very happy with the new rom. Thanks everyone. I hope this thread will help any other first flashers in the future.

Flashing JB Roms causes bootloops

Hello guys!
As the title says, I keep on having boot loops after flashing any custom JB Roms (Jedi, LiquidSmooth, CM Nightly, Slimbean). I'm not new to flashing roms (I got LG units though, SU660 and KU5900). When I tried flashing ICS Roms, I don't have any problem. But I want JB that bad!
I followed KonstantinKeller's thread of restoring/recovering from a bad flash (going back to GB), rooted following Melvin's thread. Then did all the prerequisites..like the common wiping of data, clear cache & davlik. But then again after flashing JB roms listed above, I keep on having boot loops!
What did I do wrong? This ain't my first time flashing (first time on this phone -T989- though)
I read some posts with almost the same problem, but I don't think I found a solution for this. Any good soul that can extend their help is highly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I got a bootloop before when trying to flash JB roms and what I did was restore to original state (using the bad flash recovery technique), and then not rooting it but installing cwm through Odin and dirty flashing the Rom in cwm. Once it flashed I used it for a few to make sure that everything was working correctly. Then I got the goo manager app and got twrp. After that I followed all the steps in the OP (Jedi jelly) and flashed the Rom. Now I'm running Jedi jelly 3.1 perfectly. Hope this method helps.

is there any way to reverse the loop that the darkside wipe is causing?
it REALLY sounds like the recovery u are using is TOO OLD. Make sure u are using the latest version of twrp (2.3.3) to flash all jellybean roms.
TWRP is backwards compatible and touch capable, so if you're worried about flashing GB or ICS ROMs it'll do the trick just fine
it is however a requirement for flashing all 4.1 ROMs.
Basic install instructions:
make sure u have root
download goo manager from play
open > menu > install open script recovery
agree to everything, but make sure t989 is in the downloaded image name
reboot to recovery u should see twrp

[Q] Latest Recovery and ICS Modem?

The first thing is welcome to a new world. You don't need to be on and ICS modem unless you need to use data. Since you don't, we can skip that part.
You need to have a safe recovery and AGATs is one. Since you have that recovery installed already, just download Philz Touch recovery for this phone. Boot into recovery, flash the Philz Touch, reboot into recovery. Hopefully you have the ROM file on the internal SD. Once in Philz Touch, You will need to wipe data, cache and dalvik. When you wipe data, it will ask you if you are installing a ROM. Select yes. To wipe dalvik, navigate to advance. Once those 3 are wiped, select install zip, then navigate to where you have the ROM. Flash the ROM then flash the Gapps. Reboot and enjoy. You can only get to your Liquid Smooth ROM by reading through the last few post. The link is down and they are in the process of getting it back up. The Dev has been nice enough to upload them in the post. He hasn't updated the OP yet. Once you have installed any 4.4 ROM you will have a custom recovery that will allow you to flash any 4.4 ROM. Just make sure you READ through some of the pages first or your gonna be sorry. I am not trying to be mean but I know that the Liquid Smooth forum is only a couple of pages long. Because your phone will not use data, it should do good with battery. Liquid Smooth, Vanir/Commotio have better tweaks imo.

Thanks so much.
Can you send me a link for the Philz Touch recovery because i looked for it on this forum and couldnt find it. And if it is a zip file could I just flash it like anything else in the recovery?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2201860
Go to the first page and scroll down to d710. Flash the zip file in recovery. Don't try it any other way. Don't use Philz for restore or backup. The ROM has a custom recovery for that.
