[QUICK AND EASY GUIDE] Go From ANY ROM to CM9

I had a few questions on how to do this. I eventually figured it out and since I didn't see an exact "Guide" on how to do this besides a few posts from the CM9 Discussion thread I decided to post the steps I did here.
Hope this helps somebody!
WARNING: FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE WILL CAUSE YOU TO LOSE YOUR DATA (SDCARD will be fine though).
These are the exact steps I did.
1- Auto Restore Using ODIN via sfhub's TAR file to EL29; here (I used the SPH-D710.EL29_CL852097_ROOTED-oc-sfx.exe)
2- To install CWM, I used the Auto Root package (Option C) then (Option L); here
3- I then downloaded CM7 and GAPPS here and placed them on my microSD card
4- Booted into recovery and wiped data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and go back to "Mounts and Storage" and clicked on format /system. I then flashed CM7 and GAPPS (Directions on how to flash here here)
5- Go back to the main menu of recovery and reboot system
6- I verified I was able to boot into CM7 without any issues (Wait until it completely loads and did another reboot).
(Optional) I went back into recovery and made a backup
7- I then downloaded the CM9 zip file and GAPPS file (Download here scroll down for Alpha4 and GApps v7.1) and placed both of these on the microSD card
8-I then booted into recovery and flashed the CM9 zip file, flashed GApps v7.1 file, and wiped data/factory reset; (how to video here)
9- Reboot system
10- Enjoy CM9!
(Optional) You won't have a custom recovery after you flash CM9. If you want a custom recovery, I recommend you use this one here. I flashed it through Mobile ODIN and had no problems. I used the "Rogue Stock FB21 rev2 (Odin Tar)". Read this post if you want to flash through regular Odin here

Honestly I'm not sure. I've seen several posts of people having issues when trying to go from any of the leaked ICS ROMs to CM9 (Some of them semi-bricking their devices). This is apparently the safest way to do it.

You can but you keep hearing people saying "iz brickz my fone" all the time because they tried to install CM9 with a kernal or rom that doesnt play very nice. So this is in a way the safest way to do it if you dont want to have any trouble. Ive been doing it like this since thats what someone posted on the cm9 thread when it first came out.

Sounds good. Doesn't CM9 come with a kernel though?

At the moment thats the only kernal you can use with it. no other AOSP kernal out there that is available to download. Atleast this is from what i understand. First time rooting phones after i got this phone. Still getting the hang of all this.

I flashed the Rogue Stock FB21 kernel like you said. Is it suppose to give me the yellow triangle on the splash screen?

If you odin a kernal into your phone even if its stock, yes it will give you the yellow triangle

You can always redo step 1 and 2 and it will remove it. Then just restore your last backup of the El29 rom not CM9 lol

+1 to this Got rid of mine after I Odin'd in the FB21 kernel as well. It's now forever on my sdcard from here on out for ICS related stuff.

I saw the yellow triangle on the screen but it always went past it and booted right into the ROM. Is that what you mean't?

I just flash stock CWM, wipe everything including system, and then flash CM9. Perfect all the way

I was on the leaked ICS ROM and want to go back to a different ROM. My phone is kinda soft bricked now. I downloaded the EL29 auto restore and it's running now but it's stuck at the last percentage (data.img) part.
It's been sitting here for 30+ minutes and last night I let it sit for about 1.5 hours.
My phone won't boot up but I can get into download mode but it won't auto restore to the EL29. I don't know what I'm missing. Any help would be appreciated.

sorry my friend but its time to exercise your Insurance. Look in general as there is a specific thread for your issue. Did you use the Hitman recovery from Steady Hawkin?

Unable to flash ICS..please tell me its not just me

Damn I was hungry for some ICS! lol
I just download the new CM9 and put it on my internal sd card. Okay, used chris's stock el26 kernel(flashed zip in cwm then rebooted recovery) but when I go to flash the CM9 zip in cwm, I get a bunch of nonsense.
"getprop("ro.product.device") == "GT-I9100T" || this is repeated over and over, then it says error in [folder where i put the ROM zip]
I have flashed ICS before, in fact i have flashed Blend ICS and Calk ICS just to test this issue with no problems right now. I also tried AOKP and it also failed
I'm out of ideas here. Please help.

Yes, I have. It has worked before so that's why it seems strange.
If all else fails, I guess I will just have to go with a completely stock wipe(sfhub) then

I think that would be the best suggestion actuall, let me know if that works maybe i might try it I'm running fc24 and was thinking about doing cm9 by installing el26 tar then running that

It could've been a bad download; use an md5 checker.
What I do is use sfhub's el29 one click package, then use his autoroot package to flash el26 cwm. Set up GPS test and get a lock, then reboot into recovery, follow the directions, and I flash the rom twice.
By using sfhub's solutions, you avoid getting the yellow triangle and adding to the download count.

do a double flash. sometimes the first flash doesn't go thru.

Install guide says to wipe data/ cache then flash cm9 from el26. I would redownload and md5 check also. Might try coming from cm7 or miui also as there recovery works for cm9

Why does everything say to use the el26 cwm? Is there something wrong with the el29 cwm or am I missing something?

You must flash from EL26, locate StockCWM-EL26.tar and odin that. Then reboot to recovery. Flash update*.zip and gapps*.zip after wiping cache and data.

I keep a copy of LoSTkernel on my sd for the recovery, it's EL29 and I just tried this with that and got the same results. Came, read, and came to the conclusion EL26 is the most stable for flashing ICS.

Yea you have to be on a gingerbread based ROM like cm7 then install el26 and flash cm9

Glad you got it working, also after you flash your last step should of been to wipe data/factory reset. This will ensure a clean start and possible removal of all potential bugs...

How to re-install CWM after new ROM install

Been running Blend from Team Noc for a bit and having a lot of core crashes, as well as some issues with notifications, etc. So I installed Blend 6.0 this morning and still had problems so wanted to try something else while those issues get fixed.
I went into recovery and this is a new recov I have never seen. It simply shows the android, then the following;
Android System Recovery <3e>
I was going to wipe using Caulk's and install another ICS ROM, so went to apply update from external storage (since that was the only option that made sense). Went to the folder they were, selected the format all and it took me back to the android guy on his back with a triangle!
So I am kinda stuck with this ROM unless I can get cqm back on (I guess). There are just so many threads that are out there, some old, some new, the sg2 has 5 flavors it seems based on the carrier (I am on sprint) so from what I can tell, it's the 4G touch.

Just use mobile odin and select the tar file w/recovery. You tried to boot into recovery without a recovery installed which is why it looked funny.

Thanks guys. I followed the 1st post (as I didn't see the 2nd) and ran the step's using a windows machine. Odin saw the device, flashed it, all green, success, and restarted.
Followed up with the quick root/CWM app and worked like a charm. I am back to square one now, did install Venum Ice RC3.1.1 which looked pretty clean, but 1st thing I noticed was anything that uses the media card doesn't work (camera for example). You hit it, returns you to the app drawer.
So, with what's out there right now, what seems to be the most stable with the basic's, (phone, data, camera, etc.)

I've been using CM9A3 as my everyday from. Solid as a rock. I have 0 issue.

I am also on Team Noc's The Goodness Version 6 without a custom recovery, and have a similar question. In that thread they were discussing using Odin to flash a kernel with CM, and they posted two kernals one that is the FD02 (ICS) and the other is EL29 (GB). I am currently on an ICS rom that works with the newly flashed FD02 kernal. However, my question is while on ICS can I odin to the GB recovery kernal so that I can flash a different GB rom? I am nervous to try because I have heard of people bricking going from ICS to GB, but if this works it would make my life easier as a flashaholic

Use Mobile Odin to flash EL26+cwm kernel( http://db.tt/0QJkleJR ), hold volume^+power to boot into cwm wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom, flash gapps, and reboot. People brick from using a ICS recovery to go back from certain ROMs. EL26+cwm is always the safest choice to flash with.

Yes you can mobile odin the el26 repack with cwm (not the rogue one) I believe its still at the top of the Nocturnal Venum rom thread. Flash in cwm and as it boots hold down the volume and power buttons. It should boot into the blue cwm. Flash whatever you want. Or mobile odin the el26 repack cwm and as it reboots hold the same buttons down to boot into recovery and flash away. El29 doesnt have a cwm repack (its rogue and not what you need). Keep in mind that mobile odin WILL NOT flash modem so dont try it.
Edit: The post above says basically the same thing. DO NOT use el29 kernel. Just reminding you...

Thanks for the quick response! Just a clarification, I do have the el26+CWM (el29 was a typo). Lets say I want to leave ICS for another rom, and a use mobile odin to go back to el26 and accidentally boot into my ICS sandwich rom. Is there any potential risk of bricking there? Also, what is the significance of flashing a modem? I already have an EL29 modem and I am happy with the current setup, do most roms/kernals have baked in modems? And if so should I avoid them when using odin?

You can't boot into a ICS ROM on el26 it is a GB kernel. Every ROM I have used has baked in kernel but no modem. Any modem for e4gt will work with any ROM. Kernels are GB and ICS specific.
Edit:el26+cwm is juts safer to flash ICS ROMs/kernels. When you flash a ROM it will replace the kernel. Just use mobile odin to flash back to el26+cwm to flash new ROMs/modems(wiping like usuall). If changing modem just flash el26+cwm, wipe cache/dalvik, flash modem of choice, and flash ICS kernel of choice. Reboot.

Thanks for the tips that makes a lot of sense! I am gaining confidence of going between ICS & GB. Now is it the same process for roms like AOKP, MIUI, and CM7/9? I have heard they also need specific recoveries to operate correctly.

Yes, el26cwm only and they only use aosp kernels. I believe T.C.P. has them on one of his threads.

[Q] MIJJz BLEND ICS v6.0 no recovery

I recently installed this rom coming from 5.1 and I've been having battery problems with the new 6.0. Now, I want to go back to the original but since there's no recovery how can I get it back to stock to where I don't brick my phone.

Download mobile odin and flash the el26 cwm tar and right as it powers off hold power and vol up until recovery..then wipe and flash as usual

You can also flash the FD02 kernal through mobile odin if you are planning to stay on nocturnals 5.1 rom. When you go to Noc's website where you find all the roms go into the kernals folder and you will see the recovery. Make sure to grab the version that says Rogue, and you will be fine.

There is also desktop version of Odin if you don't want to spend the money on the mobile version.

Also so you know there is a discussion thread in the general section.

What am I doing wrong?
I am running the leaked FD16 (the one on QBKing how to) on a SPH-D710 and can't seem to get this MIJJ blend to flash. I have followed QBKing77 videos but get stuck when I try calkulins_format_all.
Could someone please help?
This is what I have tried so far:
Via CWM (purple version) tired to flash calkulins format all and it didn't work, got the broken android. I know the file is not corrupt because I used it when I went from EL29 to FC14.
Via CWM tried to install MIJJ blend, no go.
Do I need to flash all the way back to EL29 root?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First. Which blend? ICS or GB? Your trying to flash with stock android recovery. Are you on FD16 still? You need to Odin EL26 one click with CWM from sfhubs threads. It will take you to stock EL26 and have CWM recovery. From there you can flash any rom.

I am looking to flash this MIJJz ver6 ics blend. Yes, I am still on FD16.
I will try the Odin to EL26 route. I know this is a stupid question but when I Odin back to EL26 will I still need to do that calkulins format all before flashing MIJJz ver6 ics blend?

Ok man, i just posted in mijjahz discussion thread about this. It is best to be safe than sorry-but don't let fear run you. Keep your head in the game and read everything you can from all users. Here's the safest way out of your predicament. go to the Dev section and download the el26 or el29 stock one click root. Also download sfhub's auto root. Power down. Go into download (power+vol down) mode and connect your usb. Open the one click root. You should see a yellow com port. Click start. When it starts to reboot press Vol. Up + power and hold it to go into standard Android recovery. Wipe data, dalvik cashe, and cashe. Now reboot. You should be back to factory stock with root. Now go into settings/applications, And check usb debugging and uknown sources. Connect your USB and open the auto root. Click the appropriate kernel your running with CWM . It will ask to make sure you're connected and press any key to continue. Make sure your not in Usb mode and continue to press any key. Auto root will run and automatically reboot the device. Now you will have cwm. transfer your rom to your sd card. And (to answer your question) put Calkins format all on your sd. Go into recovery wipe cashe, dalvik, then go to mounts/storage and format internal sd. Now go to install zip and run Calkins format all. After that go back to instal zip and flash your ROM. reboot. I know there are a hundred other ways to do this but this is the absolute safest in my experience. Good luck buddy.

Just wipe data, cache and dalvik. Once you follow the EL26 one click with CWM you just reboot to recovery do the above wipes and flash.

Ok man, i just posted in mijjahz discussion thread about this. It is best to be safe than sorry-but don't let fear run you. Keep your head in the game and read everything you can from all users. Here's the safest way out of your predicament. go to the Dev section and download the el26 or el29 stock one click root. Also download sfhub's auto root. Power down. Go into download (power+vol down) mode and connect your usb. Open the one click root. You should see a yellow com port. Click start. When it starts to reboot press Vol. Up + power and hold it to go into standard Android recovery. Wipe data, dalvik cashe, and cashe. Now reboot. You should be back to factory stock with root. Now go into settings/applications, And check usb debugging and uknown sources. Connect your USB and open the auto root. Click the appropriate kernel your running with CWM . It will ask to make sure you're connected and press any key to continue. Make sure your not in Usb mode and continue to press any key. Auto root will run and automatically reboot the device. Now you will have cwm. transfer your rom to your sd card. And (to answer your question) put Calkins format all on your sd. Go into recovery wipe cashe, dalvik, then go to mounts/storage and format internal sd. Now go to install zip and run Calkins format all. After that go back to instal zip and flash your ROM. reboot. I know there are a hundred other ways to do this but this is the absolute safest in my experience. Good luck buddy.

This is way more than he needs to do. One click EL26 with cwm is all he needs to do.

Quick Question

So if i want to try an ICS rom. I just wipe a whole bunch of times then flash?
And if I want to go back I just Odin EL29 again? And wipe a bunch and then flash GB?

It really depends on the ROM you are flashing but in essence, yes that should cover you in most cases.
Once you've selected a specific ROM I'd recommend looking at the detailed instructions that are almost always in the OP.
To get back to GB I'd just use one of sfhub's one-click options.
If you have additional questions let me know, I've flashed just about every ICS ROM out there now.
Personal recommendation? Any of Team Nocturnal's ROMs kick butt!

Personally I only use el26 with official cwm to go back to gb. I just mobile odin the kernel and wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache/dalvick and flash rom. It is the safest recovery to use. El29 has rogue repack which can brick your phone when coming from ics. Ne safe and only use el26 with cwm.

OK sweet. Thanks guys. Just don't want to brick. I've already flashed a bunch of gb roms, I wanna try ics now.

Also, all ICS kernels with cwm are rogue repacks. They can flash roms,but are not recommended. Just mobile odin ro he el26 I posted above to switch between roms to be safe.
Edit: when you mobile odin el26 on an ics recovery as soon as screen goes off hold power+volume up to go to recovery as ics roms won't boot up with gb kernels.
