I started out with (I believe) this rom- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1323763 and all was good for months.
When the ICS rom leaked, I figured I'd try it, so I performed a backup in recovery mode and then flashed.
Now, Calkulin has an ICS rom and I wanted to play with that, however the leaked rom didn't have clockwork installed.
I grabbed Rom Manager, flashed CMR, and rebooted into recovery.
I had all the zips on my sdcard and went to flash the Calkulin wiper and the little droid started glowing and then fell over with a !. The log said that the signature couldn't be verified. I tried all 4 of his zips and none of them would flash.
So, I figured I'd just restore my old ROM backup... except that there is no backup/restore in recovery now. There is a restore section in the app, but it doesn't see any of my old backups.
My question is, is there a different recovery manager? Why can't I flash or restore?
you need to flash a custom ics kernel, like rouge, most ics roms should have this baked in already, however if not, you can flash it through odin via download mode, just put the rouge ics tar file in pda slot
Ok, so the leaked rom came with a stock kernel and that's bad...
Now I need to find the Odin flasher and rouge image.
Thanks
Mobile odin el26 with cwm. Rogue repacks are not safe to flash ROMs with. They can flash, but risk a brick. Use el26 and hold power+volume up to reboot into recovery. Wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom and gapps. Reboot and you will be good to go.

I just grabbed an ICS kernel off the wiki and it worked just fine.
No CWM with ICS roms.
afaik, none of the ICS roms have CWM bundled yet because CWM is unstable. Did you get CWM straight from ROM Manager, and it worked?
Actually, there is no bundled CWM because we don't have kernel source. EL26 was the last kernel with official CWM. DO NOT USE ROM Manager unless you want a brick.

When I install a rom with stock recovery (CM9 alpha 2 for instance), how do I get back the custom recovery in order to update the rom to the next version without having to use Odin to get back to an older rom with a custom recovery and wipe my data, then install the new version of the rom I want. Is there a better way to do this?
Use Auto Root, Mobile Odin, or Odin to install GB-based CWM.

Go into download mode and use Odin into EL29 or EL26 you can do it for any ROMs that don't come with cwm recovery
Epic touch phone of xXHELLBoy91Xx
I keep an MD5 of a stock rooted EL29 and gunslinger kernel on my SD card and just use Odin Pro to flash it all at once from my phone. When thats done, just CWM back into recovery and flash whatever new rom you want.
Okay I found this from the blog post:
Stock android recovery is still being used in the ROM. This is for your protection, so you don't brick your phone due to all the people whom have flashed an ICS kernel, bricking when flashing a rom, wiping, etc. If you would like to backup or restore, or do any flashing, please go back to an ELXX gingerbread kernel, and do it from there.

No it means cwm is bricking phones on ics kernels so it will not be included in the ROM until it's fixed ....if you want to do anything flash a GB kernel with cwm el26 ...it won't boot ics so go right into recovery

Been running Blend from Team Noc for a bit and having a lot of core crashes, as well as some issues with notifications, etc. So I installed Blend 6.0 this morning and still had problems so wanted to try something else while those issues get fixed.
I went into recovery and this is a new recov I have never seen. It simply shows the android, then the following;
Android System Recovery <3e>
I was going to wipe using Caulk's and install another ICS ROM, so went to apply update from external storage (since that was the only option that made sense). Went to the folder they were, selected the format all and it took me back to the android guy on his back with a triangle!
So I am kinda stuck with this ROM unless I can get cqm back on (I guess). There are just so many threads that are out there, some old, some new, the sg2 has 5 flavors it seems based on the carrier (I am on sprint) so from what I can tell, it's the 4G touch.
Thanks to all read/replies.
use odin, instructions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609255
Just use mobile odin and select the tar file w/recovery. You tried to boot into recovery without a recovery installed which is why it looked funny.
Thanks guys. I followed the 1st post (as I didn't see the 2nd) and ran the step's using a windows machine. Odin saw the device, flashed it, all green, success, and restarted.
Followed up with the quick root/CWM app and worked like a charm. I am back to square one now, did install Venum Ice RC3.1.1 which looked pretty clean, but 1st thing I noticed was anything that uses the media card doesn't work (camera for example). You hit it, returns you to the app drawer.
So, with what's out there right now, what seems to be the most stable with the basic's, (phone, data, camera, etc.)
Thanks again, was well worth the wait to do it correctly!
I've been using CM9A3 as my everyday from. Solid as a rock. I have 0 issue.

I am also on Team Noc's The Goodness Version 6 without a custom recovery, and have a similar question. In that thread they were discussing using Odin to flash a kernel with CM, and they posted two kernals one that is the FD02 (ICS) and the other is EL29 (GB). I am currently on an ICS rom that works with the newly flashed FD02 kernal. However, my question is while on ICS can I odin to the GB recovery kernal so that I can flash a different GB rom? I am nervous to try because I have heard of people bricking going from ICS to GB, but if this works it would make my life easier as a flashaholic

Use Mobile Odin to flash EL26+cwm kernel( http://db.tt/0QJkleJR ), hold volume^+power to boot into cwm wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom, flash gapps, and reboot. People brick from using a ICS recovery to go back from certain ROMs. EL26+cwm is always the safest choice to flash with.

Yes you can mobile odin the el26 repack with cwm (not the rogue one) I believe its still at the top of the Nocturnal Venum rom thread. Flash in cwm and as it boots hold down the volume and power buttons. It should boot into the blue cwm. Flash whatever you want. Or mobile odin the el26 repack cwm and as it reboots hold the same buttons down to boot into recovery and flash away. El29 doesnt have a cwm repack (its rogue and not what you need). Keep in mind that mobile odin WILL NOT flash modem so dont try it.
Edit: The post above says basically the same thing. DO NOT use el29 kernel. Just reminding you...

Thanks for the quick response! Just a clarification, I do have the el26+CWM (el29 was a typo). Lets say I want to leave ICS for another rom, and a use mobile odin to go back to el26 and accidentally boot into my ICS sandwich rom. Is there any potential risk of bricking there? Also, what is the significance of flashing a modem? I already have an EL29 modem and I am happy with the current setup, do most roms/kernals have baked in modems? And if so should I avoid them when using odin?

You can't boot into a ICS ROM on el26 it is a GB kernel. Every ROM I have used has baked in kernel but no modem. Any modem for e4gt will work with any ROM. Kernels are GB and ICS specific.
Edit:el26+cwm is juts safer to flash ICS ROMs/kernels. When you flash a ROM it will replace the kernel. Just use mobile odin to flash back to el26+cwm to flash new ROMs/modems(wiping like usuall). If changing modem just flash el26+cwm, wipe cache/dalvik, flash modem of choice, and flash ICS kernel of choice. Reboot.

Thanks for the tips that makes a lot of sense! I am gaining confidence of going between ICS & GB. Now is it the same process for roms like AOKP, MIUI, and CM7/9? I have heard they also need specific recoveries to operate correctly.
Yes, el26cwm only and they only use aosp kernels. I believe T.C.P. has them on one of his threads.

I have installed several roms with no issues in the past, but I seem to have gotten myself turned around. I had no issues with ICS roms, but I can't quite remember what process I was using. I am wanting to install CM10, and I tried using ODIN 1.85 to install the EL26 tar, but when my phone rebooted into CWM, I wasn't sure what to do from there. I am using ODIN to go back to GB (Odin One Click) right now, and then I am going to flash CM10...could anyone provide me any direction? I am reverting to GB from stock ICS. I read in the wiki that flashing to GB from ICS with a bad USB cable can cause brick? Was the flash necessary, or could I have just stuck with flashing the EL26 tar file, and done a factory wipe/reset, dalvik cache wipe, etc from there. I have no idea why I am so confused. Thanks for the help.
I guess the bigger question may be as well...do I need to flash back to stock GB before flashing any rom, or is flashing the EL26 CWM tar file in ODIN 1.85 sufficient, and then reboot into that recovery (vol up + power) and wipe and flash zips from there?
Thanks!
Using the el26+cwm kernel for recovery is OK, it's not necessary to revert the entire rom to GB. You just won't be able to boot to your ics rom when having el26 installed since a GB kernel won't boot an ICS rom.

So, I have flashed CWM Recovery and CWM Touch Recovery onto my Epic 4G Touch. Rom Manager says both are installed. However, when I boot into recovery, I get the stock recovery. I've searched and searched and all I have found are people who aren't pushing the right buttons and others with junk answers that are no help at all, like instructions on how to flash the recovery.
Even if I reflash using Rom Manager or any other recovery installer, it boots to the stock recovery. It's as if any changes to the file system are being completely ignored.
The weird thing is, if I flash StockCWM-EL26 or rogue_ET-recovery-1.2.2-FB27-rc0 using Odin/Mobile Odin and get to whichever one I flashed once, then either the phone won't boot at all or subsequent reboots result in the stock recovery once again.
To reiterate, I have *no* problem booting the phone and I have *no* problem getting to recovery... it's the wrong recovery, but still.
Oh, and I'm using HyDrA ROM.

As I said, it either works once and never again or never at all no matter what I use to flash it.
Venum's Hydra rom? Wow, talk about a flash back..
Anyway, have you tried the el26 kernel one click?
No, but I don't imagine it would be any different than the Odin flash.
At any rate, I have an addendum. Flashing Rogue 1.2.2, the one that works - I can't get 1.5.0 to work at all (no boot, no recovery, only download mode), doesn't magically disappear, but it doesn't mount my external SD card and I can't open System Settings/Storage - I just can't win.
Would you mind listing the steps of flashing and items being flashed?
Only reason a custom won't stick is that you're flashing something behind it. In my mind at least..
First Time
<Download Mode>
Flash EL26 CWM Recovery - Phone no longer boots to OS. Can only get to CWM Recovery or Download Mode.
<Recovery Mode>
Wipe.
Flash HyDrA twice as per instructions.
Flash GApps.
Flash Multi-DPI Play Market while I'm at it.
Reboot.
Setup ROM.
Attempt to get to Recovery - got stock recovery.
Decided to try again without wiping. Same results.
Decided to try something:
<Download Mode>
Flash EL26 CWM Recovery - Phone no longer boots to OS. Can only get to CWM Recovery or Download Mode.
<Recovery Mode>
Made a NAND backup of /system and /data.
Flash HyDrA twice as per instructions.
Flash CWM Touch Recovery - Recovery takes effect immediately.
Restore the NAND backups.
Reboot.
Attempt to get to Recovery - got stock recovery.
Another thing:
<Download Mode>
Flash Rogue recovery.
Reboot.
Attempt to get to Recovery - got Rogue recovery - So far so good.
Flash CWM Touch Recovery - Recovery takes effect immediately.
Reboot.
Attempt to get to Recovery - got Rogue recovery - Interesting, but I can only access the external SD card from Recovery.
Flashed back to EL26.
Reinstalled HyDrA.
Restored the NAND backups.
(The Touch Recovery version is 5.8.1.5).
ROM Manager
Attempt to flash either CWM Recovery or CWM Touch Recovery.
Reboot.
Attempt to get to Recovery - got stock recovery.
Here is a list of my apps if you want that, too.

I'm hesitant on trying anything else because it's a pain to restore it if I can't boot to the OS.
Just went back to Venums thread.
:edit: Briefly reading the thread, you'll need to have and AOSP kernel to run the Rom, so no, EL26 will not work.
:2d edit: This is out of the second post in that thread. - *If you are restoring a nandroid that you backed up via the above process, you will need to wipe cache and dalvik, then flash an AOSP ICS kernel or the ROM wont boot because it is backed up with the EL26 kernel. Then reboot.
Hydra comes with FD26 kernel. As per the OP.
I don't know, and haven't tested, if Hydra will run with EL26 cwm. But you need to add that to the last step.
But that's why you're going back to stock. It's part of the package.
Please, please, please; STOP using Rom Manager to flash a recovery.
I see a AOSP/TWRP repack by Times Infinity in the Kernel Repo that you could try, But I have not read the Hydra thread to see if Venum had tested this prior to discontinuing support.

Yeah, anything that's not an AOSP kernel/recovery isn't gonna work. So, if Time's aosp repack doesn't work, you'll have to run the included kernel.

Odin wouldn't install it, if that makes a difference. It's not that the install failed and I had to start over, again.
Well, since my touch isn't my daily use phone at the moment, I'll test that setup tonight.
I decided to try the One-Click of the FF18 v2 kernel and it flashed successfully.
However, as with Rogue, I only have no external SD card and no access to Settings/Storage. TWRP is pretty, but if I can't use my SD card, I'd rather use the stock kernel.

My apologies on not getting back with you on this last night.
But the SD issue is also seen on the repacks with JB. Depending on when and how FF18 v2 was built (without source at the time?) could be similar to the issues with current repacks.
I'd have to refer those issues/questions to Agat or Garwynn..
Alright so i've searched google forums, yahoo, bing you name it i've tried. So i'm here today posting my issue.
i've done everything possible and did all of the recommended instructions to installing a rom / flashing
a custom kernel compatible with the rom, so far this is what i did and has happened to me.
E4GT ( Sprint ) on stock rooted GB27 w/ agat's source kernel 1.3.0.
Mobile Odin'd EL26 to flash the FL24 modem ( I wanted to try some AOSP roms and needed Data )
installed ExtendRom's AoCP through DirectBoot EL29 CWM5. ( I used tdunham's x2 jb wipe before i flashed )
The phone booted up all the way, custom recovery from Extends AOCP rom was working fine when i accessed it.
Forgotten to do a PRL / Profile update for the fl24 modem.
so I nandroid back to GB27 rom, updated PRL and profile.
Reflashed AOCP using jb 2x wipe beforehand. and i gotten the buildprop error for SPH-D710 Sprint / D710BST / D710GC01
like flashing it didn't even recognized the phones model number, then at the end goten the Error status ( 7 ) which I know some times
the file is a bad download. But I haven't gotten the buildprop error before.
So i PC Odin'd stock rooted reset data for GB27 and for some reason now it wont let me install AOSP based roms and flash a custom recovery for the rom its built for. I've been flashing Agat's source built gb27 1.3.0 and sxtp's source built with agat recovery 0.5.0.
When ever i flash AOSP its the buildprop error with Status ( 7 ) and im always nandroiding back to stock rooted GB27.
When I try and flash a custom recovery for TW JB GB27 both mobile odin and PC Odin my phone gets stuck at the
Samsung Galaxy II screen ( The very first boot image before the actual boot animation. )
I can PC odin and Mobile odin the EL26CWM5 and EL29's DirectBoot Kernel just fine. But the problem is it can only flash
TW JB roms like its locked to that specific rom for flashing only.
When i flash a few tw jb roms like SGSIV or kobridge's tweaked. The roms built in kernels are not replacing the stock original kernel
like its locked.
So if anyone wants to try and help me troubleshoot my issue, that'd be awesomeness.
This is my current setup for now.
E4GT on update GB27. ( ROOTED )
ROM - Kobridge's DeOdexed Rom.
Modem / Baseband - GB27
Software version - GB27
Kernel - Official Stock GB27 ( Can't install custom or my phone wont even go past the first boot screen )
Thankies for replies.
Go to the modem repository in Android development get the gb27 tar and flash in Odin or mobile Odin, it's not booting because the kernels you said you flashed aren't jellybean kernels.
Edit: last time I used any of the jb tw roms they were keeping the stock kernel. As you probably already know this phone when flashing roms doesn't keep the recovery you were on, it uses what is packed into the kernel.

Stock kernel with custom recovery? Ive been trying to flash agats source kernel n recovery but it
just doesn't seem to want to stay >_<
And the modem / base is already on gb27
Every time you flash a new rom you get the recovery that is with that rom, so after flashing the jb tw roms you will have to Odin or mobile Odin the recovery, in your case you said your wanting agat

That's the issue. Even with the roms that have custom recovery, the stock official will still stick.
Like TBSGIV, It's already using Agat's source, But the Kernel + Recovery is still stock official when I
flash it.
Also I've never had the yellow triangle when i booted up my phone before and the flash counter never has
been ticked when i install recoveries via mobile or PC odin, but it's starting to tick the counter and the yellow triangle only shows
up when I try booting into recovery.
Also I'm trying to look for a kernel + recovery that disables stock recovery flash like how kobridge's rom has it. But I forgot which one
was it.
