Install custom recovery only - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

When I install a rom with stock recovery (CM9 alpha 2 for instance), how do I get back the custom recovery in order to update the rom to the next version without having to use Odin to get back to an older rom with a custom recovery and wipe my data, then install the new version of the rom I want. Is there a better way to do this?

Use Auto Root, Mobile Odin, or Odin to install GB-based CWM.

Don't use any of the ics kernels repacked with rogue or cwm unless you hate your phone and need some bricks around the house

Go into download mode and use Odin into EL29 or EL26 you can do it for any ROMs that don't come with cwm recovery
Epic touch phone of xXHELLBoy91Xx

I keep an MD5 of a stock rooted EL29 and gunslinger kernel on my SD card and just use Odin Pro to flash it all at once from my phone. When thats done, just CWM back into recovery and flash whatever new rom you want.

Okay I found this from the blog post:
Stock android recovery is still being used in the ROM. This is for your protection, so you don't brick your phone due to all the people whom have flashed an ICS kernel, bricking when flashing a rom, wiping, etc. If you would like to backup or restore, or do any flashing, please go back to an ELXX gingerbread kernel, and do it from there.

Does this mean I can just flash future upgrades through the stock recovery if I already have alpha 2 installed?

Sorry bit isn't there a video and full write up on the first page on what to do. Just follow OP directions all will be well.

No it means cwm is bricking phones on ics kernels so it will not be included in the ROM until it's fixed ....if you want to do anything flash a GB kernel with cwm el26 ...it won't boot ics so go right into recovery

How to re-install CWM after new ROM install

Been running Blend from Team Noc for a bit and having a lot of core crashes, as well as some issues with notifications, etc. So I installed Blend 6.0 this morning and still had problems so wanted to try something else while those issues get fixed.
I went into recovery and this is a new recov I have never seen. It simply shows the android, then the following;
Android System Recovery <3e>
I was going to wipe using Caulk's and install another ICS ROM, so went to apply update from external storage (since that was the only option that made sense). Went to the folder they were, selected the format all and it took me back to the android guy on his back with a triangle!
So I am kinda stuck with this ROM unless I can get cqm back on (I guess). There are just so many threads that are out there, some old, some new, the sg2 has 5 flavors it seems based on the carrier (I am on sprint) so from what I can tell, it's the 4G touch.
Thanks to all read/replies.
use odin, instructions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609255
Just use mobile odin and select the tar file w/recovery. You tried to boot into recovery without a recovery installed which is why it looked funny.
Thanks guys. I followed the 1st post (as I didn't see the 2nd) and ran the step's using a windows machine. Odin saw the device, flashed it, all green, success, and restarted.
Followed up with the quick root/CWM app and worked like a charm. I am back to square one now, did install Venum Ice RC3.1.1 which looked pretty clean, but 1st thing I noticed was anything that uses the media card doesn't work (camera for example). You hit it, returns you to the app drawer.
So, with what's out there right now, what seems to be the most stable with the basic's, (phone, data, camera, etc.)
Thanks again, was well worth the wait to do it correctly!
I've been using CM9A3 as my everyday from. Solid as a rock. I have 0 issue.

I am also on Team Noc's The Goodness Version 6 without a custom recovery, and have a similar question. In that thread they were discussing using Odin to flash a kernel with CM, and they posted two kernals one that is the FD02 (ICS) and the other is EL29 (GB). I am currently on an ICS rom that works with the newly flashed FD02 kernal. However, my question is while on ICS can I odin to the GB recovery kernal so that I can flash a different GB rom? I am nervous to try because I have heard of people bricking going from ICS to GB, but if this works it would make my life easier as a flashaholic

Use Mobile Odin to flash EL26+cwm kernel( http://db.tt/0QJkleJR ), hold volume^+power to boot into cwm wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom, flash gapps, and reboot. People brick from using a ICS recovery to go back from certain ROMs. EL26+cwm is always the safest choice to flash with.

Yes you can mobile odin the el26 repack with cwm (not the rogue one) I believe its still at the top of the Nocturnal Venum rom thread. Flash in cwm and as it boots hold down the volume and power buttons. It should boot into the blue cwm. Flash whatever you want. Or mobile odin the el26 repack cwm and as it reboots hold the same buttons down to boot into recovery and flash away. El29 doesnt have a cwm repack (its rogue and not what you need). Keep in mind that mobile odin WILL NOT flash modem so dont try it.
Edit: The post above says basically the same thing. DO NOT use el29 kernel. Just reminding you...

Thanks for the quick response! Just a clarification, I do have the el26+CWM (el29 was a typo). Lets say I want to leave ICS for another rom, and a use mobile odin to go back to el26 and accidentally boot into my ICS sandwich rom. Is there any potential risk of bricking there? Also, what is the significance of flashing a modem? I already have an EL29 modem and I am happy with the current setup, do most roms/kernals have baked in modems? And if so should I avoid them when using odin?

You can't boot into a ICS ROM on el26 it is a GB kernel. Every ROM I have used has baked in kernel but no modem. Any modem for e4gt will work with any ROM. Kernels are GB and ICS specific.
Edit:el26+cwm is juts safer to flash ICS ROMs/kernels. When you flash a ROM it will replace the kernel. Just use mobile odin to flash back to el26+cwm to flash new ROMs/modems(wiping like usuall). If changing modem just flash el26+cwm, wipe cache/dalvik, flash modem of choice, and flash ICS kernel of choice. Reboot.

Thanks for the tips that makes a lot of sense! I am gaining confidence of going between ICS & GB. Now is it the same process for roms like AOKP, MIUI, and CM7/9? I have heard they also need specific recoveries to operate correctly.
Yes, el26cwm only and they only use aosp kernels. I believe T.C.P. has them on one of his threads.

CM9 Alpha 5 does not have recovery. I am not sure what method you tried to install CWM with but on this phone is is packed into the kernel. Flash a kernel with cwm, either a new safe one or a gingerbread one to flash roms. Do not use any recovery not marked as safe for flashing roms and do not flash roms not marked as safe to do so on ICS recoveries.
What operation where you planning on doing in an unsafe recovery? For example Alpha 4's recovery flashing Alpha 5 has a high chance of Super Brick so does performing a factory reset.
The new nightlies has recovery and the next alpha will. The recovery is now wipe safe and the nightlies themselves are safe to flash as they have a safe updater binary.
Trying to flash a new ROM... So should I flash the same kernel with recovery and go from there or?

You can flash the EL26 CWM kernel from odin or mobile odin and then flash to another rom - http://www.mediafire.com/?u0hs65d1utb3fe4 phone will not boot to rom with this only to recovery (unless of course your on gingerbread).
But it seems like you might not be aware of the serious bug we have. Had Alpha 5 had recovery and you flashed a rom from it an irrecoverable brick is highly probable. ICS recoveries are not safe due to a bug in our eMMC firmware. All of the stock leak kernels and repacks based on them from FE22 and back are not safe. The latest ones might be but their are made safe repacks. But their are still zips with unsafe updater binaries. For example flashing the most recent AOKP is causing plenty of bricks due to people not reading.
You should be able to flash the FF11 CM9 kernel with safe recovery and from there flash a CM9 nightly. If you are flashing ANY other ICS rom it would be highly advisable to flash from a gingerbreadkernel like the one linked above.

I know not to flash from ics, I was asking about flashing the kernel cm9 used that has recovery, so just Odin flash a kernel and I can restore my backup?

Going from aokp to stock f118

So my question is this, but I don't play with this phone too much last Time I did I flashed aokp build 38 in the instructions it made me flash a modem/kernel thru Oden or it wouldn't work. I want to go to one of the stock f118 roms but there is nothing in the instructions on flashing a different kernel or anything, but so my question is all I have to do is flash thru recovery...? Cause I remember one time I tried to just flash a touchwiz rom and it wouldn't boot so I had to restore it back to aokp I don't want to do that again can anyone point me in the right direction?

Best method:
Odin or mobile Odin el26 safe cwm kernel/recovery
Wipe & install whatever rom you want
Modem is totally separate and won't change unless you flash another
Before you boot ur new rom, flash whatever kernel you're going to use.....if the rom comes with one, and most do, ur set...but if you want a different one just wipe cache/dalvik and flash the kernel before you boot in the same flash session as your rom
Example:el26/wipe/flash rom/flash gapps if using an aosp rom/wipe cache & dalvik/flash kernel/reboot

If you want to flash TW based ROMS you can use AGATs recovery, if you want to go back to AOSP, AOKP, CM you need to flash chris41g CWM EL26 recovery and go from there

Can't boot on CM10

I have some questions and need help fast if possible. I'm currently on CM10 beta 2 and only have a nandroid backup from being stock rooted. I know you can't simply restore a backup from jelly bean to ICS. I was playing with ROM Toolbox, and was installing some custom transitions. I did a backup of the stock transitions, but the zip backup file won't flash in recovery. Anyway I can't boot up and only get the Galaxy S II boot screen. I can however get into download and CM CWM based recovery. I've done quite a few searches, with no real answers for this issue. Any help will be greatly apreciated because I don't have my phone until I figure out exactly what to do. Do I have to download a stock ROM with cusom kernel to computer then transfer over file via usb using Odin and then use CWM to flash the stock ROM? I know not to do a factory wipe unless I'm on el26 or 29. I also know you can odin to them then flash, but all the odin kernels with CWM are from ICS and I can't find a solid method for my specific situation.

Thanks Blues. But I need to flash el29 or six before flashing right? So I'm guessing I need to Odin to one? And I can do that from any ICS or JB right? So I just need the one click for PC Odin, then flash with Odin? Sorry, I just want to be 100% here.

Use the one click.exe full rom file that will flash the full el29 gb rom. Then from there you can flash cwm to flash cm10 or whatever rom you want.
But do I have to go el29 or 26? How do I get there from where I'm at now? Thanks again, and sorry I just want to be 100% here.
Edit: Okay, great. After flashing that I obviously could do my nandroid restore? Just because I lost some pictures or something happened when I flashed to JB because I only had a few pics and none of my SMS or call logs or anything came through.
Ok, just so the thread is not a complete waste, I did flash the stock ROM via PC ODIN. Went back to stock, was able to do a nandroid restore, and went ahead and flashed CWM recovery via Mobile ODIN. Went ahead and wiped factory in CWM recovery and flashed CM10. Thanks again Blues, next time I'll just post in your noob thread. . I'm not a noob but I just never had to PC ODIN when not being able to boot and wasn't sure how safe it was in my specific state.
P.S. Any other users are more than welcome to P.M. me if you have any questions. I probably won't visit here again

Which CWM flash file do I need?

Hey guys sorry if this is a noobish question but I am currently on GOODNESS JB ROM. Today I noticed that for some reason i don't have a custom recovery installed. So I need to flash a CWM but am not sure which one. The last time I made a nandroid I had flashed EL26+CWM using mobile Odin. Does that mean I need to find that same version of CWM but WITHOUT the EL26 kernel??? I don't want to mess up my phone as I do NOT have access to a computer. Thanks in advance.
Only JB kernels with recovery are GB27 that I've found. Goodness is FK23 I think? Garwyns 0.4.0 has cwm but all the others have Agats Recovery....I THINK...so be careful

Instead of flashing custom recovery, can I just go straight to flashing another ROM to get a working custom recovery? I can just mobile Odin EL26 and flash a different ROM like project X 4.2.2 and end up with a permanent custom recovery right?
Yes

Yeah...been suggested to me to flash Roms with EL26 or EL29 and mods and tweaks with agats.
For what its worth, that's the suggestions I've received.
