When I install a rom with stock recovery (CM9 alpha 2 for instance), how do I get back the custom recovery in order to update the rom to the next version without having to use Odin to get back to an older rom with a custom recovery and wipe my data, then install the new version of the rom I want. Is there a better way to do this?
Use Auto Root, Mobile Odin, or Odin to install GB-based CWM.

Don't use any of the ics kernels repacked with rogue or cwm unless you hate your phone and need some bricks around the house

Go into download mode and use Odin into EL29 or EL26 you can do it for any ROMs that don't come with cwm recovery
Epic touch phone of xXHELLBoy91Xx
I keep an MD5 of a stock rooted EL29 and gunslinger kernel on my SD card and just use Odin Pro to flash it all at once from my phone. When thats done, just CWM back into recovery and flash whatever new rom you want.
Okay I found this from the blog post:
Stock android recovery is still being used in the ROM. This is for your protection, so you don't brick your phone due to all the people whom have flashed an ICS kernel, bricking when flashing a rom, wiping, etc. If you would like to backup or restore, or do any flashing, please go back to an ELXX gingerbread kernel, and do it from there.

Does this mean I can just flash future upgrades through the stock recovery if I already have alpha 2 installed?
Sorry bit isn't there a video and full write up on the first page on what to do. Just follow OP directions all will be well.

No it means cwm is bricking phones on ics kernels so it will not be included in the ROM until it's fixed ....if you want to do anything flash a GB kernel with cwm el26 ...it won't boot ics so go right into recovery

Been running Blend from Team Noc for a bit and having a lot of core crashes, as well as some issues with notifications, etc. So I installed Blend 6.0 this morning and still had problems so wanted to try something else while those issues get fixed.
I went into recovery and this is a new recov I have never seen. It simply shows the android, then the following;
Android System Recovery <3e>
I was going to wipe using Caulk's and install another ICS ROM, so went to apply update from external storage (since that was the only option that made sense). Went to the folder they were, selected the format all and it took me back to the android guy on his back with a triangle!
So I am kinda stuck with this ROM unless I can get cqm back on (I guess). There are just so many threads that are out there, some old, some new, the sg2 has 5 flavors it seems based on the carrier (I am on sprint) so from what I can tell, it's the 4G touch.
Thanks to all read/replies.
use odin, instructions here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1609255
Just use mobile odin and select the tar file w/recovery. You tried to boot into recovery without a recovery installed which is why it looked funny.
Thanks guys. I followed the 1st post (as I didn't see the 2nd) and ran the step's using a windows machine. Odin saw the device, flashed it, all green, success, and restarted.
Followed up with the quick root/CWM app and worked like a charm. I am back to square one now, did install Venum Ice RC3.1.1 which looked pretty clean, but 1st thing I noticed was anything that uses the media card doesn't work (camera for example). You hit it, returns you to the app drawer.
So, with what's out there right now, what seems to be the most stable with the basic's, (phone, data, camera, etc.)
Thanks again, was well worth the wait to do it correctly!
I've been using CM9A3 as my everyday from. Solid as a rock. I have 0 issue.

I am also on Team Noc's The Goodness Version 6 without a custom recovery, and have a similar question. In that thread they were discussing using Odin to flash a kernel with CM, and they posted two kernals one that is the FD02 (ICS) and the other is EL29 (GB). I am currently on an ICS rom that works with the newly flashed FD02 kernal. However, my question is while on ICS can I odin to the GB recovery kernal so that I can flash a different GB rom? I am nervous to try because I have heard of people bricking going from ICS to GB, but if this works it would make my life easier as a flashaholic

Use Mobile Odin to flash EL26+cwm kernel( http://db.tt/0QJkleJR ), hold volume^+power to boot into cwm wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvick, flash rom, flash gapps, and reboot. People brick from using a ICS recovery to go back from certain ROMs. EL26+cwm is always the safest choice to flash with.

Yes you can mobile odin the el26 repack with cwm (not the rogue one) I believe its still at the top of the Nocturnal Venum rom thread. Flash in cwm and as it boots hold down the volume and power buttons. It should boot into the blue cwm. Flash whatever you want. Or mobile odin the el26 repack cwm and as it reboots hold the same buttons down to boot into recovery and flash away. El29 doesnt have a cwm repack (its rogue and not what you need). Keep in mind that mobile odin WILL NOT flash modem so dont try it.
Edit: The post above says basically the same thing. DO NOT use el29 kernel. Just reminding you...

Thanks for the quick response! Just a clarification, I do have the el26+CWM (el29 was a typo). Lets say I want to leave ICS for another rom, and a use mobile odin to go back to el26 and accidentally boot into my ICS sandwich rom. Is there any potential risk of bricking there? Also, what is the significance of flashing a modem? I already have an EL29 modem and I am happy with the current setup, do most roms/kernals have baked in modems? And if so should I avoid them when using odin?

You can't boot into a ICS ROM on el26 it is a GB kernel. Every ROM I have used has baked in kernel but no modem. Any modem for e4gt will work with any ROM. Kernels are GB and ICS specific.
Edit:el26+cwm is juts safer to flash ICS ROMs/kernels. When you flash a ROM it will replace the kernel. Just use mobile odin to flash back to el26+cwm to flash new ROMs/modems(wiping like usuall). If changing modem just flash el26+cwm, wipe cache/dalvik, flash modem of choice, and flash ICS kernel of choice. Reboot.

Thanks for the tips that makes a lot of sense! I am gaining confidence of going between ICS & GB. Now is it the same process for roms like AOKP, MIUI, and CM7/9? I have heard they also need specific recoveries to operate correctly.
Yes, el26cwm only and they only use aosp kernels. I believe T.C.P. has them on one of his threads.

Hi all, I'm new here (well, not to XDA) as I just purchased this phone 2 days ago. I love it so far. It's such and upgrade from my LG Optimus that I almost considered not rooting or flashing ROM's. Of course, I caved in last night.
Anyway, I have a couple questions regarding Odin and the process around flashing different kernels/modems, etc. Any help would be great. I successfully flashed Blue Kuban without issues as I'm familiar with CWM and all that great stuff.
1. Is there a good tutorial that I can use to do more research on Odin? I see there's a mobile version and a PC version, so I'm not sure which to use.
2. I see in some ROM's, the install instructions state to first flash a specific kernel with Odin. Is this to prevent bricks from flashing from ICS to ICS ROM's?
3. Hypothetically, if I wanted to switch from Blue Kuban to CM9 (or any other ICS ROM), couldn't I just restore my stock GB back up and then flash CM9 (or any other ICS ROM)? If not, what is the most user friendly method you use?
Thanks all, really glad I chose this phone, it looks like there's awesome development for it! Any help is greatly appreciated!

1. OK for Odin, you can try searching for a tutorial on qbkings YouTube channel. Basically all you need to know is that the PDA slot is for kernels and such where as phone slot is for modems. Only have auto reboot checked in top right settings. Mobile Odin works the same way. You can flash kernels from there and can save you time and when you're away from a computer. It currently has problems flashing modems however. There is a paid and lite version which you can find here in xda if you search a bit.
2. Yes this is to prevent bricking which has been happening when wiping data/factory rest in custom recoveries repackaged in ICS kernels. This is why its recommended to go back to el26 because this is the last true source (we don't have ICS source yet) we had.
Whenever changing roms, you must Odin/mobile Odin the el26 cwm kernel and do any rom flashing, restoring, backing up from there. So if you want to switch to CM9 from the ICS version of Blue Kuban I'm assuming, Odin el26 cwm kernel and flash cm9+gapps there.

Awesome, great info and I'll definitely pick up the mobile version. So it looks like I only need to flash the kernel, not actually flast a GB Rom?
The only other thing I'm wondering is if you recommend using the Rogue CWM Recovery. I have it installed right now. Are all ROMS compatible with this recovery?
Thanks again for your quick and helpful answer!
I personally use the rouge 1.4.1 kernel to do all my flashing. Rouge recovery is built from tweaking the cwm recovery. In essence, they are the same thing. Rouge has less "no's" and the menus are better organized, so I use it.

Yea all you need is the kernel. If you're on an ICS rom when you flash the el26 cwm kernel, it won't boot your phone but you can go into recovery still.
I really wouldn't recommend any custom recovery at this time for ICS. I mean it takes maybe an extra minute odining the el26 cwm kernel or so instead of directly booting into rogue recovery. From there you can flash mods, tweaks, etc and then just reflash a compatible ICS kernel. What do you really need rogue for? Not worth the risk IMO.

Interesting. I'll have to read up more regarding Odin. So I could literally open Odin and plug my phone in and then flash the el26 kernel and flash whatever ROM I want from Odin as well? Sorry, a little confused there. Just not sure how I'd flash a ROM without a custom recovery.
Thanks again, I'll also check out some tutorials. I'm guessing it will feel like 2nd nature in a week, just learning the new process.
The recovery is built into the kernel for this device. I use odin, flash the el29 rouge kernel v1.4.1, when the phone resets after the flash, boot into recover using volume up and power, wipe, flash, whatever you want, make sure you reinstall ics rom or kernel if you are on ics and reboot.
Ah, so if I flash the EL26 Kernel, will that overwrite my Rogue Recovery?

Well download whatever rom+mods/etc and put the files on your phone. Then just odin/mobile Odin the el26 cwm kernel and flash whatever you want from there, ICS or GB without no chance of a brick.
On our phone and I think most Samsung's for that matter, the recovery isnt separate from any other partition like with HTC. It must be packed into the kernel. So whenever you flash a rom, whatever recovery is packed in with that kernel included with the rom is what you're getting. Most devs are packing in stock Android recovery to cut down on bricks and instead recommend always flashing from el26 cwm kernel.
So yea that's what makes mobile Odin so great. Have el26 on your storage and you can switch roms very fast, easy, and safe.
Anymore questions just ask.
Edit: are you on GB or ICS Blue Kuban and what rogue also?

Thanks, really good info. I'm on Blue Kuban ICS right now with Rogue CWM 5.0.2.7. Looks like Odin will be a very easy way once I get comfortable with it.
So basically, I'll put the kernel zip in the PDA slot in Odin and let it do its thing, then my phone will auto reboot into the kernel's recovery where I can flash the ROM? Or do I flash the kernel in Odin, and also flash the ROM in Odin as well?

Odin is just used to flash the safe el26 cwm kernel onto your phone. It will auto reboot and just hang at the Galaxy S II screen since the GB kernel can't boot an ICS rom so just power+volume up into it. Hold it for maybe up to 15 seconds but it'll come around. You then flash the rom in recovery from there. So put you rom files, etc on your phone before you Odin the kernel.

Kernels flashed through PDA slot in Odin will be in either .tar or tar.md5 format, .zips are for cwm recovery only. You can find the el26 cwm kernel in the kernel repository sticky in dev section, its the first kernel listed. No problem, glad to help.

Hi all,
I just got a replacement E4GT from Sprint, I had planned on staying stock but after the hardware issues of my first iteration of this device and the somewhat lackluster update, I decided to take control and root/flash.
I used to do this on the EVO but it's been a while.
so I followed QBKing77's videos to the best of my ability. I have Rogue Recovery installed (pretty sure it's the latest, I downloaded from the official thread and ran the exe to install less than an hour ago). It's doing NAND backup and recovery just fine, so I assume Rogue is working but I can't install AOKP or MIUI.
From the video, it seems like I use the zipped file on the phone's memory, do I need to unzip first?
Can I flash directly from a EL29 Rogue to an AOSP ICS ROM?
Use Chris 41g's EL26 CWM kernel for initial AOSP flashes. Though if your stock now are you not on FF18 ICS yet?

No, No rogue for AOSP. Custom CWM bricks. Rogue was the popular one at the time, pretty sure there was another one that was not working as well.
EL26 with bone stock CWM.
RainMotorsports: I am on EL29, I've had the replacement for 3 days and it has not updated. I could follow the manual update but I hear most people like to flash from GB ROMs because they're stable?
also, I'm sorry, I don't understand flashing kernels. Don't we have to flash an ICS rom before we flash a kernel? And I thought the AOSP kernel was stock with Milestone 6?
rovar: So should I Odin back to EL26, re-root and install a recovery? Does that have a better recovery?
I'm wondering if I should just unzip the files and try again...
You can flash the EL26 cwm kernel on to the phone as is. If its rooted sfhubs auto root tool can do it for you http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1342728. If its not rooted you can flash the tar for it in odin. http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Repack/EL26/
As far as FF18 goes the leak was the OTA you can NoData one click for an OTA like experience where things are not perfect or wipe the phone with full data. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721229
I can approach the rom/kernel question from 100 angles. But you need a kernel with the proper recovery to flash the rom, when you flash the rom the kernel is overwritten with the kernel in that rom. To get another kernel you once again have to flash a kernel. I do not keep up with AOKP. CM9 since alpha 6 has a safe cwm5 based recovery and it + the nightlies use a repacked stock kernel. Chris 41g is testing some from source kernels for both, the AOKP one requires his version of milestone 6 and thats my extent of knowledge on the state of AOKP kernels.
AOSP roms flashed with EK02 through EL29 rogue brick. Chris41gs EL26 CWM has been the tried and true kernel. You could flash the kernel of a TW or AOSP rom, the phone will not boot until a matching rom is installed but we did the reverse (EL26 kernel while the rom was still ICS) all the time.
Thank you. I found a video that showed how to get stock EL26 CWM Kernel installed via Mobile Odin. I am trying to make a second backup because I'm not sure the Rogue Nandroid is compatible but it's having trouble making a backup from here. It seems that it's only recognizing 200mb of free space and I know there's a lot more.
It seems that the EL29 Rogue backup I made won't restore to the EL26 kernel/EL29Rom I'm now running. I'm going to delete the old backup and try to make a new one.
Anyway, sounds like I'm pretty close!
And I'm now running AOKP. Thanks so much! You guys were fast and helped a ton!

Nice. I bet the addiction is already setting in. I just went from CM9 Nightly 7-22 to an early 4.1.1 AOSP build back to TCP's 7-28 CM9 which i had no clue what to expect from but I am on it now. Must must must flash them all!
Edit - I just flashed FF18 forgot I wanted to PRL update and fix my boot image while I was at it.
I need some tips on flashing EL26 or EL29 recovery kernals from GB27 rom.
When flashed (odin, mobile odin, and zip) my phone gets stuck on the first Samsung E4GT logo. No recovery is added, volume up and power only reboots device to same logo.
Ive done this flash before and never had an issue. I dont know what could be the issue.
Would flashing a stock GB or ICS rom and pretty much starting from scratch be a good idea?
I guess my question is are there issues with flashing from GB27 to EL26/29? Do I need to be on a specific kernal? My only fear is if I flash a stock GB rom I wont have a kernal to flash anything else.
Could there be something wrong with my phone? It really seems to me flashing from my current rom isnt compatable.
Please send me some tips and advice on what roms to flash to get back to an el26 so I can proceed with my goal in all this which is flashing the new SHOstock rom with multi window.
Thank you and I appreciate any help!

It wouldn't hurt starting from scratch. It sounds like your current Rom is having some sort of conflict with the EL26/EL29 CWM kernels. Have you tried flashing a gb27 cwm recovery? That will allow you to flash a new rom. They are stable as dd's now and I use them all the time. Try Garwynn or Agat's gb27, they both come with Agat's custom recovery which has cwm. If that doesn't take, might as well save all your important stuff and give a fresh start a try . Good luck.

I gave flashing stock GB08 rooted a shot. I then flashed EL29 and EL26. Still does the same thing.
Doesnt boot to CWM.
If I flash a Gingerbread rom, since my EL26/29 isnt working, will I be able to access my current GB27 state I am in now without issue?
My AGAT GB27 is doing me well to retrieve all my current backups.
I dont want to go back to Gingerbread and not have a recovery to use because it uses EL26/29. So I would be screwed, correct?
Thanks!
I am trying to flash EL29 Gingerbread Stock Rom with Root.
This doesnt work as well. Odin freezes on the flash at FactoryFS.img.
Does anyone know why it would freeze on this file?
I've tried multiple tar files, different ports, different cords, two versions of odin.
I let it sit for 30 minutes and nothing. What caused the factoryfs.img file to freeze?
What hardware in the phone could cause this issue?
Any help wouldbe appreciated. All I want is EL26/[email protected]#$ WHYYYY!
If you flash el26 or 29 over ICS or JB your phone will not boot past splash screen. I always use el26 with odin from PC, kernel is flashed from pda slot. Reboot the phone and hold then keep holding power +vol up for like 30 seconds and you will boot into el26 recovery.
If you want to switch from from Touchwiz JB to AOSP or older GB/ICS rom you need to flash a ICS 1 click first like FI27 then flash el26 kernel and flash rom. If you are trying to flash the rooted el29 one click rom it should work. Maybe bad cable. I only flash with blackberry microusb cables.

You are confused my friend. Odin uses .tar or .tar.md5 files and CWM recovery uses .zip files. And if you're stuck at splash screen after flashing el29 it's because you can't boot el26 or el29 unless you have that build rom on your phone. They are used for recovery only. Pull battery, reinsert, reboot into recovery, and flash the rom of your choice from there!(e4gt only of course)

It looks like the situation I was in last time, I most likely know how to fix that?
