Death grip? - HTC One X

Holding the superior (top half) part of the phone in the palm of the hand shows drastic drop in wifi signal (tested with dB meter), also visible in wifi icon "lines".
Does this qualify as a death grip and eligible for replacement?

No, that is just you blocking the wifi antenna... Death grip is more of a joke actually, it means if you pinch the top left side of the phone with your hand the connection will cut out (Now why you need to hold that part of your phone closed tight in your hand is a mystery)
Yet, if you can <<Disconnect>> your wifi by holding the top left corner of your phone, you can go for warranty if your phone is still lock...

Yeah I have the same problem as the OP, mine gets to the point where I can get it to go from full signal to absolutely nothing simply buy holding my hand over the camera.
Are you sure this is normal?

I would say you're blocking the wifi signal.
If it was going the other way "death grip" the phone and the signal boosts then you have the wifi problem and would need to contact HTC to get it fixed

Yes, that is normal (Actually it is not normal by international wifi standards, there is a problem with HOX WiFi antenna, but as this hardware problem is in all HOX devices and even HTC is admitting it, it counts as normal)

Hi there,
I have one X and tried this method and signal drops if i hold (half top) of the phone, but i don't think this can called Death Grip.. i also tried with Sensation and Evo3D, they loose signals like One X.

Does Desire suffer from N1 3G issues

Basically we all know with the N1 how if you held the bottom of the device with your hand the device would loose 3G signal. Additionally this would cause issues in 3G low signal areas
im just wondering if the Desire suffers from the same issue considering its hardware is near identical to the N1's.
Could someone who has a Desire confirm with us if this happens or have HTC actually fixed the issue
Can't say I have ever experienced that and I use 3g everyday on this thing.

Yeah it still happens with the Desire. If you hold it at the bottom in the palm of your hand it quickly loses a large chunk of signal, sometimes going back to GSM.

My blackberry bold 2 also lose some signals if i hold at the bottom of the handset. I don't thing its a issue.
As the antenna on the desire is at the bottom it does reduce the signal if you hold it there. The difference is that most phones put the antenna at the top.

And I don't understand their choice
When I make a call I take the phone at the bottom... I think it's more natural than take it from the top...
Is it to protect the brain against bad radio frequencies ?
Actually, I always take my phone at the bottom... The buttons are at the bottom, the keyboard is on the bottom of the screen... I really don't understand why I should take my phone from the top!!
Big ergonomic issue in my mind. But I probably can live with it...
the phone is being let down big time by this one stupid issue. Why did HTC decide to do this. WHY WHY WHY.
This issue may not affect most people but its nice to know that your signal isnt artificially being shown as less when you know you could get a better signal.
Its not that hard to hold it from the top, I'm already used to it.

And do you can press all buttons and tape on the keyboard with one hand by holding it from the top ?

[Q] Death grip

Hi everyone
I have this problem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Gu9oKlWq1Y
Anyone know how to solve this problem ?
Just as a disclaimer, every phone will lose signal if you grip it a certain way. Remember the iphone debacle?
But the quick fix is to just put a case on it. Your body will no longer interfere with the antenna and your phone will have the added bonus of surviving a fall.

Downside is cases tarnish the natural beauty of the phone that the cell phone manufacturers intended. I just take the risk. I would rather have a nice looking phone IMHO.
I already have this one http://www.otterbox.com/HTC-G2-/-HT...C4-G2XXX_color=20&start=1&cgid=desire-z-cases
gripping ANY phone tightly/awkwardly over the antenna will cause loss of signal. Some are worse than others, but it happens to any modern phone with an internal antenna. Cases help, but you're still going to be able to replicate it if you try hard enough. The phones are designed so that the antenna will more than likely not be blocked if you're holding it in any normal conventional way during regular use.
One usual culprit for the G2/DZ is the WiFi signal getting weaker when using the hardware keyboard, because your hands are covering the top and bottom of the device.
so isn't any idea to solve or help a little with this problem ?

Like I just said, there's nothing you can do other than just don't hold the phone in such a ridiculous way. You can't move the antenna inside the phone, it is where it is.
In normal use I highly doubt you'll ever see drastic signal drop because of the way you hold your phone. Nobody normally holds a phone in the way shown in the video.
So tell me how to play in gameloft games where all of them is in landscape mode

like I said, using the phone normally (yes even playing games in landscape) your signal shouldn't drop so low that you will be completely disconnected from the network. Don't get scared just because the bars drop.
But i already play at Order and Chaos and this game are also in landscape mode and unhappily i get lost connection every few minutes ;/ and the game has reconnecting.

There's nothing I can tell you. The antenna is where it is. If for some reason you're in a low signal area to start and you cover the antenna you're going to see loss of signal.
Tell me if i give back this mobile on warranty then they are able to solve issue ?

You're not listening. Every phone has this issue if you hold it in the right place. Its a cell phone with an antenna. Its just going to happen, there's nothing you or the manufacturer can do to "fix" it after the phone has been made.
I acutally thought this was a radio problem. I switched radios and noticed a slight improvement.

A radio update can help your signal a bit overall, but it will never remove the effect of strategically covering the physical antenna. What it would help with is a default low signal, that gets worsened to the point of disconnection from the network by covering the antenna (aka your normal signal could be higher, so that when it gets lessened it still stays connected).

Got the one x yesterday...few problems...

Hey..i got my one x white yesterday...
The phone is awsome better than galaxy note which i used before it...
But few problems i noticed...
1. I got a faulty unit...vibrator is not working....will get replace done today...but i wanna know how to go to test menu so i can test the new unit i recieve...

Regarding WiFi, mine is way better than on my sensation.
In my front room, I would get 1-2 bars on my sensation. With my one x, I get 3-4 bars, and even when I hold the phone landscape and cover the top, it stays 3 bars.
I can also detect loads more networks than on my sensation.

All phones will have some death grip effect, it's just how they are made. Like a previous poster I find wifi reception on the One X better than anything I've had previously - android or otherwise, and regardless of how i hold it.
My router is downstairs, when i go upstairs and death grip my phone I still get better reception than I did on my old desire when holding it properly.
Regarding vibrate.. what is wrong with that guys suggestion? It is a perfect way to test vibrate. Heck, even when you first turn on the phone just as you type in login details you should get haptic feedback from the keyboard.

I have noticed slight backlight bleed at the bottom of the screen when viewing a black screen. There is also some uniformity error, where the top of the screen is more bluish white and the bottom more yellowish.
The signal strength reads lower than the sensation

Retards????when we pay a hefty amount for a device we believe it to be free from any such errors...and if we talk abt it than we are not loosers like u...
I just got my phone today..! so far so good.. but the only problem is it gets heated up like ( in the early days how samsung galaxy s used to be like a frying pan ) frying pan.. but it's when i was on a call through wifi on skype and also the phone is very responsive, except when you hit the task manager or multi tasking capacitive button it takes a second or 2 to load up.. sometimes when you press it like 2-3 times then you will encounter some problem.. anyone with the same problem ? although I really hope and think that all these problems will be addressed in the updates.. am currently on 1.26.. it's like 1 hour i got this phone.. trust me the screen is awesome!!

To those with signal problems - try this please.

Hi all,
like some I've been having poor signal and not entirely sure if it's software or hardware. But I encountered something apple-esque earlier with my one x.
When holding the phone normally, i.e. resting in the palm of my hand with my finger and thumb round, I get around 1 bar, this rises a little outside.
When holding the phone from the speaker with my thumb and index finger, i get nearly full signal! Also by holding the edges at the base of the phone results in improved signal for me.
Can those who have issues try this out and see it it works? If not, I guess it must be my handset.
lol if this is just a death grip issue

Really weak wifi signal and screen sensitivity issues

So my note 2 has really really weak wifi signal, I am 20 ft from the router with only 1 wall between us and the wifi keeps timing out and sputtering.
I have turned off the power saving wifi and replaced the drivers with the ones from 4.1.1, I have tried numerous kernel and roms.
Is it time to open up the phone to look for a hardware fault?
Also screen sensitivity on the bottom right of the screen is terrible, trying to hit the back space key can be a nightmare at times

Found the wifi fix
I just figured out what the problem is, the wifi antennae in the case was buggered! I ordered a new back of the phone and replaced that and the wifi is fixed!!! I had a feeling that was the cause of the issue but I couldn't be sure till I replaced it. The wifi antennae is above the power button, with the back off you can see it as the long piece of plastic that is stuck in on the very edge. I had to buy a whole new back - it was only about $11 shipped. But it solved all my wifi problems.

I took the main part out of the chassis frame and found that the spring contact on the PCB (which is supposed to touch the wifi antenna on the chassis frame) wasn't springing up. I bent it up so it matched the profile of the other spring contacts and put it back in the chassis frame and all was well. My suspicion is your wifi antenna wasn't broken (it's just a bit of metal so there's nothing to break, really), just not quite touching the spring contact.
Same Problem
