T-Mobile Galaxy S3 Audio Hardware - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

I have been trying to get infos on US version of Galaxy S3 whether it is Wolfson DAC or not, but unable to get any confirmations from early receivers yet. So, in a hope of receiving something, Can anyone of you who received Sprint Galaxy S3 confirm its audio hardware whether it is Wolfson DAC?

Let me know which *.lib files I'm looking for and I'll check for you.

Actually, it does not. The gsmarena results indicated that it did not, but AndreiLux helpfully pointed to the system configuration in the source code.
So your choice is quad core, great GPU, and great sound, or a lower price and much better transfer speeds.

I can't comment on the veracity of gsmarena (or the quality of their audio testing), but you don't trust the source code released by Samsung? Are you suggesting that maybe the Wolfson is present in the U.S. phones but the Samsung developers forgot to enable it?

Haha I don't know maybe I'm in denial. I was really really looking forward to voodoo sound.

I have fortunately never had to deal with this. Are you suggested that a carrier-purchased phone would have the warranty honored by the carrier? Up to a year (or whatever the warranty is)? Or that the warranty is always honored by Samsung, but Samsung U.S. won't access non-U.S. phones?

I think TMobile does warranty exchanges in-store.

The US versions don't have the Wolfson dac but they still sounds pretty darn good. So please stop sweating it. The Qualcomm audio stack it has is great and well sorted out. No worries on that front! I've tested it with Westone UM2's, Sennheiser MX880's, Denon D2000's, and the bundled earphones (best ever to come with a phone), and the phone sounds good. So stop worrying about it. It's a non issue.

Not true ..the wolfson via voodoo also had an option to change mic sensitivity so we could record good sound in loud venues. So far the indications are you get crap recording video at loud concerts.

Yeah, but the indications are also that this is related to the video recorder audio encoding, not a hardware or system issue. A better video recorder or a simple update could resolve the issue.

Any way to do this without Voodoo Sound, since it won't be compatible with the US variant of the Galaxy S3?

Well as a followup to this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1887750
I'm going to post about the qualcomm audio codec and we can access the registers maybe change the
mic levels, don't know about the wolfson though..

SOUND QUALITY (when compared with devices equipped with the Wolfson DAC )

I am probably going for the Note, but I will be testing the sound of the GNexus, the minute it hits the showrooms here in Holland.....and if its sound is as good as or even better than my sgs's (wolfson dac) ....that could change my mind....
Anyway, for those who already own a Galaxy nexus AND have experience with phones equipped with the Wolfson DAC, like the sgs, i-phone and more, how is the GNexus's sound in comparison?
Thanks
Probably going to have to wait for the audiophile or music freaks to get a satisfactory answer to that. A lot of us are still waiting for that answer.

Is this thing already being sold or not?
Here in Holland , if I order now, it will take 4 weeks
I pre-ordered mine @ expansys.nl and they deliver on December 3rd. Supercurio inspected the sound hardware already and it looks quite ok. its up to google how they impanted it into the OS, But im not worried cuz im sure things get tweaked and optimised overtime.

If you read better, it says expected December 3rd. That's slightly different.
Mine is expected at the end of November. Bottom line is that they simply don't know when The Phone will be delivered.

I tried to find the Supercurio info that you mentioned regarding the sound hardware for Galaxy Nexus but searching Google I did not find anything. Do you have a link?
BTW. I just looked at the expansys UK site and they have the 32GB model (for others looking for this version of the phone), but no price listed yet:

Sorry, I don't have enough posts to make a proper link.

I already knew Supercurio thoughts....
I was hoping that there enough users out there with that thing in hands, already testing...
I guess the selling still have to warm up
I buy my decices always on belsimpel.nl . they have good prices, good service and an office here in Groningen, where I can pick it up...
GNexus 560 Euros...
Tje price of the Note went down to 546 euros

[INFO] Google Nexus Page Updated

FYI, now that the phone is officially released in the UK, looks like Google updated http://www.google.com/nexus with some useful information.
N.B. the specs page for the US version of the site only lists the CDMA/LTE version. Perhaps evidence of a Verizon exclusive, at least temporarily. It also confirms that the LTE version is 9.5mm thick, weighs 150g, and comes with a 1850mAh battery.
The Galaxy Nexus youtube account now has instructional videos:
http://www.youtube.com/user/googlenexus
N.B. This video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXrgIFMfsaQ shows what the back of the Verizon version looks like, and further confirms a Verizon exclusive, for now.
Samsung UK also opened up their full Galaxy Nexus page: http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/mobile-devices/smartphones/android/GT-I9250TSAXEU
it's a shame when Google release it to almost all the network at UK at the same time and US it will be later and just Verizon

Look on the bright side. Right now only the US and UK have the updated page. All other countries are still on the old teaser page. Which means the US should be the next to get it...maybe...

Also this confirms the 9.5mm thickness and 1850mAh battery of the LTE version that was posted some time ago by a bunch of Chinese tech sites.

Interesting...according to the quick start guide, what we thought was a microphone on the back of the phone near the top is indeed a microphone, but it's not a noise canceling microphone, it's used for video recording and speakerphone calls.

Considering how much Samsung have shown themselves to be completely incompetent with this phone, maybe it's not too far a stretch to assume that PDF is incorrect.
It makes no sense to have a separate mic just for video recording and speakerphone calls when every other phone has managed just fine with only one main mic on the phone.
It is way more plausible that the mic on the back is for noise cancellation.

No, it's not. Samsung have been using microphones on the back of their phones to enable stereo audio recording since 2009.

Perhaps I should've been more clear. Samsung have in the past used dual microphones, with one on the back, for video recording. There's one on my Omnia HD.
Some more interesting things I found on the US google.com/nexus site:
http://www.google.com/support/ics/nexus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1649769&topic=1650156
This page only mentions CDMA and LTE. Since it's the generic help site for the US Galaxy Nexus, this is probably further confirmation that Verizon has an US exclusive for a while. On the plus side, it confirms that you can turn off LTE if you want to.
http://www.google.com/support/ics/nexus/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=1650164&topic=1650156
This page is about tethering. Notice it says nothing about feature availability by carrier, nothing about the possibility of needing to pay extra for this service, nothing about these options potentially not being available. Remember that these help pages are for now specific to the CDMA/LTE version, which means this page is talking about tethering on Verizon. This raises the possibility that even on Verizon, the tethering capabilities of the Galaxy Nexus are completely untouched. Which, if true, probably means that Verizon wasn't able to tamper with the base system at all.
Guys, I didn't get it yet. What the mic on the back is for? For noise cancellation or what? And I've just checked that in spite of having 2 mics, video records in mono (using the mic on the back). Is that possible to record using 2 mics (stereo audio recording)?
That is correct. Its for noise cancellation during calls.

Beats Audio now unofficially available for all Android devices

http://phandroid.com/2012/03/04/bea...es/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
what's good about beats? seems like it's all hype
So along with the 10+ threads we have about ICS for the international GSII (that don't help us at all) are we gonna see 10+ threads on how Beats can be ported to any Android device now?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525172
and the actual thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1525226
The download list says it works for samsung devices. I am testing it now.
I really hope this doesn't bring an influx of "does this ROM have Beats?" questions.
It's vastly overhyped and to an extent, the sound quality isn't any better than what you can configure with Poweramp.

My reasoning is as follows.
On the Beats Audio HW side, it is overprices POS that lives on name brand along, much like BOSE. This is not to say the Hardware is bad, but rather that it is highly over-priced for what you get and can often get better quality for 1/3rd or less of the MSRP if you buy other brands.
As for the SW side of things Beats audio artificially increases the the lower end of the audio spectrum through audio "enhancement" algorithms which actually colors the sound and effects not only the Lower Bass but Mid-bass as well and imho ruins the music. It ruins it by changing the sound signature drastically from the original. Basically from all I have seen through wave-guide charts is that it adds or amplifies all frequencies under 120hz to be at an equal or higher level than the highest output for a single frequency. In short, it makes all music sound heavy in bass whether or not it was the artists original intention.
Can't say that's what I want happening to my music then. Thanks for the fairly detailed explanation.

The tests over at GSMArena agree with you. They found lots of distortion, noise, and lack of stereo separation.
At least the U.S. Galaxy S III models have excellent frequency reproduction. I mostly ignore the dynamic range (I think it's difficult to be sensitive to the minor variations in this regard). I'm just worried that the noise will be high enough to be perceptible, and it doesn't make me happy to know my headphone channels are mixing more than they should.

It all depends on how you look at it if you listen to raw "FLAC" format audio then DAC will make your phone sound beautiful but if your listening to lower quality mp3's then a compressor will defiantly do you well. All DAC is ;in a nutshell ; playing audio exactly the way it is.

The audio DAC (as people are using it here) is an electronic system that converts the digital files stored/generated on your phone and allows you to hear them on your analog devices like headphones and the speaker. If it introduces distortion and noise, then it will do so regardless of the source material. You could argue that it doesn't matter with ten-year-old, low-quality MP3s, but it does matter somewhat.
Also, I'm not sure what you mean by a "compressor" in the context of playback.
Also keep in mind that, ultimately, it doesn't matter that much. The audio quality is going to be better than anything you might have listened to twenty years ago, and most people aren't going to notice unless you have a good set of earphones or speakers and are listening at a very loud or very quiet volume. If you tend to keep your volume around the middle of the "bar", I think you'll be hard-pressed to notice anything at the differences we are discussing here.
According to those tests the dac in the s4 krait is a actually superior to both the gs and gs2..and I can personally tell you my evo LTE sounds great with both my beats tours and klipsch ear buds

Aftermarket headphones with mics don't work for making calls on the GSIII?

Hey Guys, I am VERY frustrated with this phone.
I have 2 pairs of awesome aftermarket phones that I have used for years on various phones to make and receive calls: Klipsch s4is and Bose E2s, which have worked on: iphone 4, iphone 4s, nexus one, LG G2x.
I just sold my 4s to get a GS3, and now, the headphones are not recognized by the phone app. WHen I dial out, I cant hear anything, and the mic doesn't register my sounds. There is no option for wired headset in the phone sources section of the phone app (which has a bluetooth option, and a speaker option, but not a wired headset option).
Is there any solution to this? If not, I'm immediately selling. I can't imagine that this is the most popular android device. I'm already dealing with the stock mail app not showing or syncing Exchange sub-folders, which is very, very annoying. Combine that with the headphone issue, and I'm already ready to bail. Please help!

Loyalty? What are you talking about. I'm about quality and features, not loyalty. In fact, to be loyal to a phone sounds completely wacko to me.
I'll repeat for everyone: I just called Samsung tech support. They have confirmed that aftermarket headsets DO NOT WORK ON THIS PHONE.
The also confirmed that: exchange sub-folders DO NOT WORK ON THIS PHONE.
You're telling me that is acceptable on their premier device? That is a joke. I will most definitely be selling this phone for one that supports the most basic, basic functionality.
BTW, I tested the phones on 5 different phones at the ATT and TMO stores and the Samsung kiosk at the mall. The headphones work on none of them. The 2nd tier customer support at Samsung has zero helpful information, and no date to fix. This is pathetic. I'll be getting rid of this phone now. If anyone wants a brand new white 32gb GS3 for TMO with an elago case and screen protector, let me know.

Exchange sub folders work fine, I use them for work every day. (FYI, I have about 20 sub folders to my inbox.)

Interestingly, tier 2 Samsung support contradicted you this afternoon. They don't work on mine, and the support person confirmed the feature is not supported.

Her advice was also to buy a third party exchange app.
Have you tried them using a non touchwiz rom? That might be a solution
I have the same problem, but it only happens on "3 buttons" headset. If you use "one button" headset, it works fine with S3.
Example: I have Bose MIE2 (universal) and MIE2i (dedicated volume buttons for iPhone).
MIE2 (one button) does not disconnect when making calls, but MIE2i gets disconnected everytime when making call and I have to re-plug to make it work again.
My brother has piece of sh it headphones from Walmart with a built in answer button and mic. It works just fine...

I feel your pain. The first time I realized that my headsets didn't work with the S3 I was baffled. And it sucks that every time I'm listening to music with my earphones and I get a call, I have to pull the phone out and answer the call using the earpiece and mic on the phone. Totally stupid and frustrating. I hope it gets fixed soon. It's also really funny how the buttons work (one, not 3 on 3-button headsets like mine) to pause and skip tracks but the mic doesn't. Stupid.
On the Exchange Folders front, all folders do show up. The way I access them (I have multiple exchange accounts set up) is to hit the account drop down and then tap on show all folders. So the Samsung support person you talked to was wrong on that front.

Not responsive to my post.
Secondly, bluetooth? i don't use bluetooth. i use high grade wired earphones with mic: Klipsch and Bose. THE DEVICE DOESN'T SUPPORT THEM.

My original Android wired headphones (that came with the Nexus One) work perfectly with the T-Mobile SGSIII to play music and make/receive calls. The call comes in, the music pauses and I answer the call, talk to the caller, hear them perfectly and end the call using the headset button. There something wrong with either your headset (I'm leaning in this direction) or your phone.

I have used wired and BT headphones from 3 different companies and I can listen to music and make calls with all of them.

I have klipsch 4S Androids and they work fantastic on my SGS3. Personally, I love the headset and the Mic on it works great. I know klipsch say the iPhone ones don't work on android. But I agree, you should buy a different phone. You must like what you buy when you spend on a top of the line phone.
