Water damage. - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Well, 2 days ago I accidently dropped my Nexus into a sink full of water, right away I took the battery out and let it dry in a vent for hours, put the battery back in and my phone did continuous bootloops for hours until it finally got to the homescreen, but the touchscreen was not working at all, long story short I let the phonebdry on its on and tried turning the phone on again and the touchscreen and phone worked perfect, i dried the phone the next morning with a blow dryer on cool mode and everything was working great, but now out of no where the bottom half of my screen is not responding to touches so I have to turn the phone upside down to type this, I love this phone and got it 2 months ago when they dropped the price to $399. I have no insurance on this phone and only tmobile insurance that doesnt cover this phone, my contract is up and as much as I dont want to do it I guess I have to let this phone go and nove on to the GS3. :-(

I wish I did, but I needed my phone badly for my daughter and wife so I used i thinking everything was good. I think the GS3 comes in stores in 2 weeks I hope the Nexus gets better, great phone.

Dude at my work dropped his in the sink also and I took it apart and put it in a bag of rice for a week and put it back together and it worked just the same :/
that sucks man I suggest using a loaner phone or old one if you ever find yourself in this situation again

That sucks dude, sorry for your loss. **** happens... I keep my device as far away as possible from any liquids.

The phone has a 1 year warranty from Samsung though could you not send it into them to get it repaired?

Just buy a new GN man. This is a bad idea because you're paying 280 for the GS3 and getting back into another tmo contract.

sounds like he did that on purpose as he's being pushy about buying a sg3.... so he was just looking for an excuse to get the new phone

Funny you say that. I was trying to push the wife into letting me get a GSIII, and I accidentally dropped my GN in a puddle of water. Let it dry (only for about 12 hrs though) and started using it again. My charging port is real finnicky now, gotta wiggle the usb connector to get it to work just right and even then, it hardly ever mounts storage on the PC. So, it's down to modding my GN for a wireless charge mod (way cool), or spending $700 for an outright GSIII. Looks like wireless charging here I come lol.

Hahaha na I had a GS2 and dont want touchwiz anymore. Ive had a Nexus one and Im trying to stay nexus only from now on, my contract is up and I told myself why should I pay $130+ to fix my GN when I can just go get a GS3 on AT&T for $180? The nav bar on the bottom only responds to a few touches sometimes I have to flip my phone 180 to use my phone. I woke up this morning and my phone was working ok again and then later on It started acting up again with that portion of the screen. Ahhhhh.

It's not too late to pull the battery and put the phone in a bag of rice, leave it there for a day or two.

The American versions of the SGS 3 are crippled. Get the international version. The american version gets a lesser CPU in order to have LTE.
That seems to be a trend as the Galaxy note, HTC One-X and the SGS 3 have all received lesser cpu's in the American versions.

FTFY Number of cores doesn't = superiority. Ask Intel.
The S4 holds its own CPU wise. GPU is weaker for sure but no slouch.

Depends on the terms. Most warranties don't cover water damage

When I have my phone plugged into the charger the screen runs perfectly fine. Weird.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

from my experience with water damage: Open the phone (service manual can be found on google. of course this voids warranty but the water damage already did that, so who cares.), take it apart completly. Carefully clean every single piece of the mainboard using a small/tiny brush and compressed air (make sure to keep enough distance to avoid introducing new water damage from the air). Use a strong magnifying glass to make sure you catch even tiny residues. I can provide you pictures of what to look for if needed, PM me for that.
If you're lucky there's no physical damage but just residue shorting contacts and increasing resistance and cleaning fixes that. If some chips got actual damage though you're out of luck, but it's worth a try.

I was in the same boat as you man. I unfortunately dropped in a bowl of water which I won't expand further on. I cried and ran to get rice and put it in it for 24 hours. It started working beautifully for a whole month. Then slowly but surely it started failing on me altogether. If I we're you I'd sell it on ebay and get about 180-200 for it, which is what I got, and get another one or something else. I'm using a brand new white one because nexus is in my blood. Try drying it a bit more. Oh and always good to have a spare phone lying around just in case

Calling all Gnex owners, opinions needed

Hey everyone,
I have been given a gnex for free by a coworker after another coworker dropped it and spilled coffee on it. It wouldnt turn on and the glass is cracked. Beauty of being the "android guy" at work I suppose. After trying a few troubleshooting steps like getting the phone into download mode, i tried a friends gnex battery in it and it booted right up. Its only the glass thats cracked, lcd and digitizer are fine as far as i can tell from using it for several hours. One 8 dollar battery from amazon later i have a functioning free gnex upgrade.
I thought id be able to live with the cracked screen but i think id like to replace it, i like my phones like i like my women.. Do you guys foresee anything substantially better than the gnex coming out in the next few months? Im up for an upgrade in about 6 months from my droid charge (company phone) and then ill have to convince my boss to go for it...or samsung wants 160 to replace the screen, which of course will be coming out of my pocket.
Would you guys put almost an upgrade fee cost into getting a gnex or wait?

Considering you already have the phone.. you might as well.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Enjoy the free GNex for a few months, then enjoy your free upgrade. Plus, you can sell the Gnex once you get a new phone
Replace the screen...you can sell it for much more, if and when something better comes along and catches your eye.....like the next Nexus!
The GNex is already six months old, and the next one should be out in Oct or Dec
Screen replacement is what...$20-$60? Do it. Save your upgrade for something like the next Nexus.

Unfortunately... no Glass + LCD + Digitizer is all one piece on this phone, i thought the same. It's strange, samsung will fix the screen and pay shipping both ways for 160. The cheapest I can find to buy just the part is almost $200. I would be dumb to not go for the samsung deal.
I think I'm going to call samsung back tomorrow and send it off and then I guess in about two weeks I'll be officially on a gnex Then let the xda way of life begin.

If I was buying today I would absolutely buy the Nexus again based solely off of Dev support.
I think you should fix the screen and enjoy it. $160 seems like a great price to get all of that work done correctly including shipping. Just keep an eye on the phones for the next 6 months, especially the next Nexus line. You could always sell the nexus for some pocket cash if you decide to upgrade.
I would have to agree with the majority. Def fix the screen and enjoy the abundance of awesome dev support.

HAHA! Now I feel dumb
Try buying a second hand nexus for $170. It's basically impossible.
Swypesation
Also, keep in mind you're essentially paying what you would pay for the GNex on contract, without signing a contract. So you're still getting a hell of a deal, even with that screen repair.
So you have a phone that will work for a long while, without having signed a contract, for cheaper than it would have cost to sign a contract. Great deal.

New Guy

Hello all. Just bought a Galaxy Note 2 last week for Sprint. In LOVE with this phone. Too bad I had it for 2 days, dropped it once and the screen cracked. Sooooo, waiting for the replacement now; Best Buy gave me a loaner phone that is painful to use at this point. Anyways, can't wait to get it back and learn some tips and tricks.

Because of situations like these they implemented a new policy: if you don't have your device back within 14 days (it is not clear whether it is 14 'working' days or just days) then the store will issue a replacement. Keep in mind that the S3 and the GN2 are new devices so the chances of them being RE'd (refurbished / exchanged) are slim. Very likely, they will authorize a replacement. Also, BBY/GS will not call you in regards to this, it is up to you to call them and remind them that you need your phone and that is it takes too long to issue a replacement/credit for the damaged device.
The OP needs to get that Otterbox Defender that is showing up at the Sprint stores.
I'm thinking of getting one too but want to check it out first to see how big it'll make my already large phone look...

Sometimes I Really Hate Samsung

Usually not, but damn. Last week my original GNex had it's radio's take a dump. After 11 solid months, I rebooted one night and had data, but voice never came back. So I put everything back stock and walked into Verizon and paid $15 to have a replacement overnighted to me.
Now, a week later, I've come to the conclusion that my replacement is fubared. I've never seen a device experience sleep of death + turning into an oven so quickly and consistently before. It's good for 30, maybe 60 minutes tops before it craps out. This is awesome when your phone is your alarm clock.
So here I go again, getting ready to waltz back into the Verizon store and do the same song and dance again. Pay $15, get a phone on Tuesday, probably have something massively wrong, rinse and repeat. Hey, devices take a crap from time to time, and luckily mine did while still under warranty, but I'm taking picks on how many replacement units I have to go through before one finally sticks.
My guess is the 3rd replacement is a charm. Who wants the over?
Those of you who have gone through the replacement fiasco with Samsung, how many tries did it take you to get a good one?
Why do you pay when you have still warranty?

Shipping to have it overnighted. It's also awesome that my local store doesn't toss out loaner phones while you wait (It'd make it easy to avoid that whole shipping thing). Maybe I'll call Verizon Tech Support just to bug them about.
no issues at all with mine...
I love Samsung personally
OOOh, free overnight shipping. Thanks Big Red!
Hopefully the next one is a charm because honestly, I don't know what I'd do without a Nexus device on Verizon's network. The alternatives make me cringe.
why is there no option for none
Read the last line of the OP.
I'm just curious to know if getting bum replacements is a "normal" thing because for a phone that went through a "100 point inspection", well, they dropped the ball on this one.

Getting my third in the mail tomorrow Last one had ridiculous sensitivity issues, we'll see what the next one brings.
And why don't you just call em up instead of going in to the store? I keep my phone and they send me a refurb in the mail. The first phone was USPS, but after that one was crap they began overnighting it via FedEx.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I went through 4 before I got my refurb, then I promptly sold it for a GSM model. That's one thing that I have to hand it to Verizon for, they were really good once I got the 1st defective one. I had 4 at one time, most overnighted at no cost and no fees or holds.
They did try everything they could to not send me one though... Unlike Google who were more then happy to send me multiple N7's.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I had to replace one because of dirt under the screen even though its new and heat issues, the replacement was perfect and never get hot under normal use. I also bought one recently and it has heat issue and poor screen as well, but I'll live with it for the price. Its sort of a luck thing with this device, especially a lottery with AMOLED screen. I was going to get the N4 but it seem to also have lots of little issues on its own, such as getting too hot, I really hate phones getting overheat.I'm still waiting on confirmation on the USB OTG too.
After reading this it makes me think I need to bug Asurion tomorrow, I had to get an insurance replacement so I have to go through them for warranty now, they are definitely more strict on some things but like 3 minutes of complaining about signal got me a new one once already. The current one gets EXTREMELY hot under even normal use, so hot that it is uncomfortable to hold and definitely would be uncomfortable up against your face.

The first time I went in, I was hoping that they'd have one in the back they could swap out for me, or a loaner phone (fat chance, I know). My job pretty much requires a working cell phone. I'm kind of surprised that Verizon was so willing to send a replacement out in just a few minutes. Granted, I don't know what alternative they'd have. There's no real way to troubleshoot SOD issues. My main concern is just not having to go through a massive fiasco running through multiple devices, especially with an 8 day vacation coming up.

Well, if it's still under warranty, I'd jump on it.
Let's see... My first nexus has a seriously bad screen. I shipped it out the same day I got it. Got my replacement (#2) and the screen was worse than the first one. So I sent that bad and got another one (#3). This one had the same issue as OP. Radios wouldn't work....no voice or data and the phone got really hot. Enough to where I couldn't hold it to my face. So I sent that one in and they sent me a Samsung Stratosphere (#4 replacement). Sent that in and got the nexus I currently have making 5 replacements (4 with nexuses). I also went through Verizon...
Good luck
I had to replace one about ~8 months ago for screen ghosting. I was really satisfied with the replacement until now because the ghosting is back on the replacement. I'm contemplating switching to T-Mobile though, so I dunno if I'm going to attempt to replace this one.

Well that sucks. My screens have been great. Well, that, or I'm not picky. The second replacement seems rock solid so far. Good data speeds, strong signal, solid screen, solid GPS and no SOD/Overheating. Maybe I've lucked out...but I'm not uncrossing my fingers.

Need help making a decision...

Hey everyone.
Need personal opinions as I cannot decide for myself -.-
Recently got a warranty replacement device from T-Mobile.
It's a refurb.. -.-
My old one had a weird smudge in all camera apps as well as in the picture. Really annoying.
Well I got my refurb, it's got it's issues, 3 "ink" spots on the screen, my original had zero! I cannot undervolt by more than 25mA. My original could under volt by 150 across the board. The refurb gets very hot (approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit with normal use) my original hardly ever broke 90. And my battery life is freaking **** with this new device. (I'm guessing heat is the issue here)
I'm really ****ing upset. Excuse my language..
The decision I cannot make is this.
Do I request T-Mobile to ship my original device back to me(it's still in transit just dropped it off today), and either 1 deal with the camera smudge, or 2 take apart both devices and swap the camera modules?
I looked all over YouTube, I cannot find anyone saying there is a warranty sticker covering any screws.
Does anyone know if they can tell if the device was disassembled? I have professional tools so I won't leave markings behind.
Simply put, I hate this "new" device.
I don't understand why companies give refurbished devices for warranty when I am paying full price for a brand new device that should last at least a year. It's not my fault something happened that was out of my control..
Thanks for putting up with my rant lol.

Wow, that's though. I send in my Device to samsung for a fix, and they fixed it with a "replaced PBA" comment, but I saw some people say they just send another one. Hopefully it's not a refurbished. I doubt they will be able to cancel the shipping, but if they an, most definitely swap the camera modules. Having those problems on the refurbished sucks. I could have fixed mine but I sent it in hoping Id get another one which didn't die after 2.5Hrs screen on time and 12 hours running time. Switch out the cameras if possible. I myself, if I get a bad one on saturday, I'll hate my descision but Im going to go for the 16GB nexus 4. Hate the limited storage and the on screen buttons that get in the way, but heck I'm not going to live 2 years with a faulty device

I can understand your frustration With my experience working foe Tmobile and having done countless warranty exchanges since the my touch, they will not return your original device. Unless you cannsomehowncontact ups and have them stop transit and send it back and return the one they sent you. You should contact tkobile again and tell them what happened. Afaik they will not return it back to you. When it gets to their processing center it'll get factory reset, processed and possibly put back up as a refurb if it passes all their tests. You do have the option of requesting another warranty exchange, possibly going to retention this time or a higher tier of tech support.

I'd do that too. With the sgs2 I went through five warranty exchanges. They wouldn't offer me anything else because apparently it was the best phone they had even though they had the presale of the sgs3 going on when this happened. That's what drove me to sell it and buy a gnex. Long story short in back here.

So they want me to send this one back, and when they receive it, they will send another one back..

If I get the original one back, does anyone know if they can tell I had it apart?

I feel your pain. They pulled the same refurbished bs on me before too. And a buddy of mine on Verizon got sent back a completely different (and lower end) refurbished phone with their insurance.
I know it doesn't help your current situation, but for your next phone I suggest you check out Square Trade. They actually treat you right & are fair and honest. Only thing is they don't cover theft. But I know they WON'T send you back a freaking refurbished phone. I used them once and they were great.

Next phone I'm saying efff you to everyone. No warranty for me, no insurance either. I'm fixing it myself. Either way I'm losing money.

I called. And they can't send the original back. But they want me to send the one I have now back and once they receive it they will send me out another one. And they said they made a note that it is my second replacement so they said hopefully it will be a brand new device.

But I only just got my LGOG

I picked up my OG used on eBay for $160 a month ago. I had minimal expectations. I shattered my GS3 and with no warranty and a full year of contract left before my upgrade I needed something affordable and still high-end-ish. I settled on this mostly because of it's quad processor and 13 mp camera [a camera which I to this day had maybe 20 minutes of actual fully functional use of] I was crazy apprehensive of going to a phone with no removal battery or sd slot. These were some of the things I loved the most and lorded them over my iPhone touting friends. But here I was. Me! Knowing my download limitations waaaay in advance. Me! Unable to just pull the cover off and tap the battery out to fix sudden crashes. It was madness at it's finest.
Then suddenly I started to grow to love this thing. The thin, light-weight body. The bright screen. The native (non-Samsung) Android menu key positions. The modest xda community. Something about having a device that next to no one knows about is refreshing.
This device makes me feel like I have some non-amazing super powers just waiting to bust out.
Now if only I could get some damned 4G around here....
Or an official update to the latest JB

Thanks! Yea, no regrets here. I work at a ****ty Staples selling phones, and my only prior LG smartphone experience was with the LG L9 which is a massive pile. Definitely a diamond in the rough here.

Very cool man. This here phone of ours is a beast and based on specs, might be future proofed for some time yet. It certainly won't compete on a raw power basis with some of what's rolling off assembly lines even today, but it will be able to run just about everything we throw at it competently for quite some time.

you dont have to pull the battery off to fix sudden crashes... because it will never happen
got mine for 2 months now, no regret
Yea outside of a boot loop or two when flashing I've never had a crash. I regularly had them with my old Epic 4g touch and S3. Confidence?

WINNING!

I got this phone off contract for $210 a few months ago. I still think it is the best available phone on Sprint and there is nothing in the pipeline I am aware of (for Sprint) that would make me switch.

I know right!
The day before i traded an evo 3d for a iphone 4s with 9 months of applecare+ and apple gave me a brand new one the next day
Welcome! This is a great phone!
I just got my lgog and I'm loving it. I've had it for a week and upgraded from an og evo that wasn't really so mobile anymore. Somehow a capacitor blew on my motherboard so my phone would last randomly between 20 minutes and 2 hours, randomly shut off when battery showed 40-80% so I was tethered to my charger lol. Oh well this phone is amazing. I rooted and unlocked it the day after I got it haha
Got mine yesterday, 170 bucks. clean esn, all the plastic on it still, cords/tags/etc still sealed.
guy was leaving sprint and wanted to get some quick money

i tried to earlier. my main desktop is out of commission until i get a new PSU, my current computer is single core 2gb and takes more than 20 mins to compile a kernel (im used to under 4). when i get it back up and running ill consider doing a stock based kernel (i have yet to find a reason to flash aosp on my device) and ill see how im feeling then.

I know what you mean I'm still on stock and its really fast. I'm used to touchwiz and never really noticed how slow it really was until I got this phone.
