So I wanna know what radio your using. And what carrier, I'm on optus and I don't know whats best. Im currently on KK6 as it gets the best speeds...
I'm on TPG (Optus reseller) using stock radio...the speeds for me **** all over what i was getting on my Sensation last week
UGLC1
I am with Vodafone, and recently (3 days ago) flashed UGLC1...works very well for voice calls, I'm getting roughly the same speeds on my phone as I do on my broadband at home (tonight 3424kbps down, only 422kbps up; on 6/5 I had 3934kbps down, 1757kbps up), and my wireless strength seems to be better than it was on stock too.
I had major call quality issues with KK6, and trouble getting a signal at all with KRLB1 (though I was fiddling around with radio bands at the time and got stuck on AUS rather than AUTO, so that may have interfered with my results).
Basically, the best way to do this is to back up your radio (use the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit), and then download some off xda and see if they work. I'm sure you know that Speedtest.net has a great app to use for benchmarking.
I'm using the XXLA2 radio with the Swedish carrier Telia and it's so-so.
What's the difference between having "WCDMA Preferred" and "GSM/CDMA auto (prl)" as was pre-4.0.4?
There's some detail on this thread:

they are carrier dependencies and refer to how a carrier handles voice calls...GSM is the standard most used, WCDMA (i think) was the early 3G
I'm using XXLA2 with Optus. It's better than the original KK6 for me in terms of reception I think. I haven't really tried changing the radios just because I don't really have any reliable way of benchmarking them lol. Keen to get an answer here
XXKK6 here on TPG (optus)
never had any problems with it so haven't touched it, though I never download any large files on mobile data so can't really say anything about speed (I tend to stay under the 50mb/month 'free' PAYG data lol)
I just tried the SC04DOMLE3 radio, with not very good results...a couple of calls were fine, but one was garbled and one dropped out unexpectedly.
I've reveted to UGLC1, which has been pretty stable for me over the last two or three weeks since I flashed it

I bought an unlocked HTC TYTN Hermes 200 from a private party. He lives about 40 miles away from where I live and he used it with T-Mobile in California (I live in California also). Before I bought it, I tried it out (while I was in the same city that he lives in) with my T-Mobile SIM and made a phone call and the reception was clear.
Since I got home, I've had problems in 2 places (home and work which are about 5 miles apart) where I have 1 bar of reception and if someone tries calling me, it doesn't even show an incoming call on my phone, it goes straight to voice mail and if I try to call someone, it doesn't ring even once, it just says call ended. When I am at other places, I usually get decent reception (but not always).
I have tried flashing all of the recent radio firmware but nothing has made a difference. I also tried inserting another T-Mobile SIM and had the same problem. My previous phone (unlocked Treo 650) had really weak reception in those same areas but not this bad. The phone is not warrantied, according to HTC. I have made sure all my network settings are correct. It's running Windows Mobile 6. I think it might be a problem where the HTC antenna doesn't pick up a signal as well as weak T-Mobile reception.
Any ideas of what I can do about my problem ?
radio version?
I've tried every version from 1.38 to 1.48 and nothing changed with all of them. Right now I am using 1.40
Hmmm...
apparently there are no TyTn HW reason that can cause this problem...
Other peoples in that areas have low signal? (obviously yes)

well no not exactly....
wife has a razr with t-mo and it gets reception just fine. i dontknow anyone else with an htc.

Have you checked to make sure all the bands are active; like it is not set to only use certain frequencies and not others?
I have the band set to GSM (vs. Auto) and band is set to GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850). None of the other band settings seem to work.
oh and I updated the radio to 1.50. There is a small improvement where my phone rings half of the time when i call my cell from another phone.
HEY
I have had a simmilar problem in California, it doesnt make sence but what I did was flash the radio to the newest 1.50 and then re-install a new rom, and make sure you set the band selection to AUTO on both. NOT just the GSM-UMTS, but also the band frequency. and then power off the phone by pressing the off button and then turning it on. I have a TYTN too and HTC should warranty it, its guranteed for 2 years. Hope this helps.
jackieboy,
thanks for the tip. what rom are you using ? I am using black satin.
where abouts are you located ? I am about 1 hour east of los angeles I just want to get an idea if you are roughly in the same area as me.
Are you with T-Mobile also ?
After you did this, how many more bars of reception did you get ?
by the way, I changed network type from GSM to Auto and the band to Auto and no difference in reception. I haven't flashed a new rom yet though.
Try oficial ROM it cames with radio upgrade and is work very good for me.Also batery time increased .

First off, a real big thanks/"you the man!" etc. to Cyanogen for CM 7. Finally took the plunge and rooted my phone, warranty be damned. Let's just say I had an older Aria (which had already been rooted) as my training wheels, and it certainly was nice, but nowhere near as nice as the DZ/Vision.
So let me get my specs out of the way:
Baseband Version: 12.28e.60.140fU_26.04.02.17_M2 (I gather the bold part is what we refer to as the radio version).
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.28-cyanogenmod-g4free2e [email protected] #1
Using CM 7.0.3
Now in running Speed Test, I'm getting about, ranging from .45 Mbps, going as high as 1.60 Mbps in terms of download with upload being only slightly behind, sometimes being even. Now the results don't make sense, and I know I've gotten significantly higher in my area, and browsing does seem slower many times latesly.
So should I change my radio (again)? I had changed it (probably shouldn't have) thinking I could get more consistent mobile Internet connections, but I guess I've kind of screwed up. Any suggestions from fellow AT&T users?
I'm in the same boat, about to get my Desire Z. Not a ton of AT&T users for the Vision so I wasn't sure whether a different radio would benefit or not...
I've gotten up to 5 Mbps down on the stock radio. But obviously, this is going to be dependent on your local network (whether or not the HSPA+ backhaul has been performed, and network congestion). It would be ideal if you could compare data transfer rates with another AT&T customer in your immediate area, preferably on an Android device.
Only time I've switched radios, was when I tried Virtuous, and used the radio that is recommended for that ROM. Did not notice any change in data speed.
I assume you have the Canada Bell version of the Vision. In that case, you never had a warranty. HTC states in their terms that any phone purchased outside of the country it is intended to be sold in, is not warrantied.
I am on 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.18_M3 CM7
I get 1~1.5 MB/s Down and <1 MB/s during peak hours. At 3am in the morning i get 3-4mb/s Down and 1.35 mb/s up. This is from an Suburban area too...
Once I get into the SF City CBD area during 8am hours i get 300kb down lol. And all my data no longer work.
Also I have an iphone 4. It makes no difference when i switch the sims. Same data speed.
I used to use RUU_Vision_Hutch_AUS_1.85.861.3 when i had issues with 3g dropping to edge all the time.

Really? No warranty, eh? Well I'm going to have to look at those terms again. Not like it matters now anyhow.
Sadly, most of the AT&T users I know are iPhone users; however, there are a few I know I could ask.
Yes I have the Canada Bell version of the Vision; however, I don't remember the stock version of the radio, so I'll have to do some digging unless the stock radio is what's in your sig. If that's not the stock radio, well, I can always try it.
Anybody else (particularly in New England/Northeast USA)?
Thanks again!
I should have an unlocked Bell Desire Z in my hands in the next few days. I'll do some testing and see what results I get.

Thanks! Keep us posted, cause I'm sure there are several of us here on AT&T. I plan on testing next week.
Kk, so finally got the phone unlocked/working. I ran a few tests from a few different places and got the best result to be 2.4Mbps down and 1.1Mbps up. I'm not really sure if those are hspa+ speeds or not and don't have my friend's atrix here to compare at the moment. I'm also no sure but he was telling me that if I want hspa+ speeds at&t needs to activate something for me. Can anyone confirm? Or at least tell me a way to be sure of what I'm currently on?

Stock radio is: 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.18_M3
Where in New England? I'm in the Boston area. Data speeds vary greatly depending on exact location. I get good speeds at work (Burlington, MA), often 3-5 Mbps down (but sometimes dipping to 1-2 Mbps). While at my house in Waltham, its abyssmal, with speeds often around 0.5 Mbps down, or even less. Luckily, I'm always on WiFi at home.

I think it always says 'H'. Just tested at 4.11 Mbps down, and it says 'H'.
I'm in California, in the greater Sacramento area. I have a Desire Z NAM that I've been using on ATT since about last November.
I don't believe the backhaul overhauls have been done in our area yet as I haven't seen an increase in data speeds lately.
During the day, I average downloads of 1.5-2.5mbps and uploads of 1-1.5mbps. Of course during off peak hours, those numbers go up a little bit but not drastic. When heading into the bay area, specifically into San Francisco they tank hard, to the point where I'm better off switching to EDGE...
I am still running CM 6.1 with radio 12.28b.60.140eU_26.03.02.26_M
My GF has a Dell Streak on ATT and she gets comparable speeds to my DZ. Haven't tested it for exact numbers but I don't feel a significant difference when using her browser against mine.
Haven't done any tinkering with Radios either, perhaps a project for summer when I get some vacation time...

Haven't had much time to test as the company move has me working massive amounts of overtime (hey, at least the paycheck is huge).
I live in Connecticut; right outside the Greater Hartford area. I plan on moving back to the stock radio to see if anything gets better, so we'll see.
Granted I plan on being in NYC this weekend, so testing may not happen seeing as how AT&T's service is like rhino poop in the area.
(Yes, rhino poop).
I'm on stock radio and I have zero service in my basement. Service was never that great down here, but I always got one to two bars. Can anyone point me to radios to work specifically for AT&T Desire Z users or does it make a difference if we use those other ones (like T-mobile)? I've seen the thread with all the radios, but I am clueless as to which ones I should try.
I have the Galaxy nexus unlocked and am using it on T-mobile USA, it seems like i am getting 4G (HSPA) coverage less than when I was using my G2X. I was wondering if anyone else was feeling this way? I was also wondering if anyone has gone into the hidden menu (*#*#4636#*#*) under Phone info and experimented with changing the Preferred network type at all? I am currently set to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) i tried changing it to WCDMA prefered, but it wont stick. I know we have done that in the past for other T-mobile 4G phones to tell the phone to always connect to 4G unless no 4G signal is present.
i too feel like its bad signal on the nexus, i changed to wcdma only though
Did yours stick? I tried to change mine, but if I go back into the hidden menu after I change it, its back to GSM/CDMA auto. My changes dont save......
i'm not noticing any difference from my nexus one really. also not noticing much better download speeds either.
mine sticks for sure
Did you do anything special? I go into the drop down menu select WCDMA preffered, then hit the back button to exit the hidden menu right? There is no save option or anything that Im missing right?
Just tried it again. I can pick WCDMA only and it will stick, but WCDMA prefered wont stick. Interesting....
are you guys getting better signal with WCDMA only or about the same?
i get really crappy 3G reception and sometimes it's so bad that i have to force my phone to stay on edge just so i can make phonecalls.
My phone constantly displays the H, but my speeds are down right despicable. Its near dial up status

I've had no problems with the GN on T-Mobile's network without changing any of the internal settings. In both New York and Arizona I've been getting 3 - 5 Mbps consistently, with peaks of up to 7 Mbps.
One thing I've noticed is that the radio switches to 3G when I'm not using data, but when I load a webpage or ask for data it switches to HSPA+. This is probably to save the battery life, so I'm not complaining.
This seems a relevant place. I just bought my GSM Nexus yesterday on Amazon and got it today. T-Mobile SIM card plugged in, I get terrible reception. I have no signal at all where I'm sitting, whereas my Vibrant and my G2 both had at worst 3G connection.
I'm not a clever man, but I know something is up. I haven't rooted or done anything to my phone. Is there something that I must do to get the phone to work properly?
To reiterate: I have done absolutely nothing but put in the SIM card.
Try a different baseband (search the GN forums for details)…
With the latest baseband (XXLA2) I seem to have better signal than I did on my nexus-s, and the nexus-s did pretty good.

I have recently upgraded from an old Moto Droid 2 to the Gnex on Verizon. I wanted to upgrade before the new cut went into effect so I could retain my unlimited data. I stream all my music from a music server at home, and stream netflix, and hulu plus alot as well. I have had the phone for about 5 days, and have unlocked, and roote dit but have left the Vanilla 4.0.2 as is for now so I could get a solid baseline for battery life and radio performance before tweaking anything in the future.
Today was the fist time I had to commute to and from work with the phone, and I am very upset with the coverage I got. I take the train and am constantly switching cell towers, and usually experiance spoty coverage because of it, however when using my Droid2 on 3g it was still good enough to stream music throughout my commute.
I have noticed that the majority of the time, the phone shows absolutely no data connection now, and when it does connect it never goes above 1 bar. How is this possible when the Droid 2 had a better signal? I have read that some people get "lemons" and that the Gnex has been known to have radio issues, I apologize in advance if I am spamming the forum, but I wanted to get some feedback from some of the advanced Gnex owners here.
IS this normal? How can I test my phone's radio or know if I have a "lemon". IS this scenario easily remedied through flashing a radio? I still have 11 days to test it out, if I want to return the phone to Verizon.
As much as I really wanted to have a Nexus device, I won't pay for a smartphone that can't maintain a data connection. According to Verizon's coverage maps, much of my commute is LTE territory but yet I can not even maintain a 3g connection.
FWIW, the only thing I have done thus far was toggled the radio to CDMA only in attempts to get a data connection, it did seem to help out, but overall it seemed that my connection was slower than when I was using my Droid2. I will try getting speedtests when I can to compare to ones from my Droid 2 as well, not sure what else to do.
If you need LTE, your best bet is to upgrade to 4.0.4 radios and see if that helps. If it doesn't, return the phone to 4.0.2 and exchange it for a new one.
You have a lemon if the data connection drops out completely, which is what it sounds like it is doing.

I find that enabling 'Use only 2G networks' helps out with most signal issues, depending on where I am. For example, in central London I leave the option unchecked (ie, use all networks), and the speeds are great. Then when i leave London and the faster networks dissipate, the speeds decrease to little or no cover. Then I enable the 2G only option and streaming/reception is back to good. This is in the UK on GSM though...

Well I must say there was a noticeable difference with the phone on CDMA only, so I am truly hoping I did not get a lemon! I also read this interesting thread here which calmed my nerves:
http://rootzwiki.com/topic/25921-this-is-why-your-verizon-nexus-signal-sucks/
Often times, it is easy to jump to conclusions based on hunches, and I compared data fron a few speedtests while I was tethering on #g and they were indeed comparible to my previous phone.
I also went ahead and manually flashed the IMM76K Android 4.0.4 update before I got it OTA, I have read a few people's comments about 4.0.4 having better LTE performance, SO I will continue to try it out some more. I guess next stop is trying various radios/kernels, but I am a bit rusty. I havent done anything besides a one stop custom rom, since my HTC Dream days.
I have noticed a great improvement with 4.0.4 update.. actually in most cases, LTE has been more consistent than 3g... the handoff between the two seems to be the problem still, once it transitions from 4g to 3g it often craps out, but nothing an airplane mode toggle doesn't fix.
Does any one by chance know if it is possible to try mixing LTE/CDMA radios?
Hi I have noticed that since being on jellybean roms I have poor 3g speeds, I don't use 3g much because I am usually in wifi range and I have low data allowance, but I often use it to quickly log into my bank account etc. It takes one minute or more just to log in. It used to take a couple of seconds.
My carrier is TPG, an Optus (Australia) reseller which uses UMTS2100MHz/900MHz.
The phone says Mobile Network Type: HSDPA:8
Baseband is I9250XXKK6. I have not flashed a baseband on its own before on this phone, just used whatever came with the rom I guess. Have tried AOKP jb and euroskank CM10. Both the 3g is super slow. Never had this problem on ICS.
My boyfriend has a nexus S still on ICS on the same carrier and his speeds are fine.
Anyone in Australia on Optus/optus reseller can tell me the baseband they found to be the best? I see a couple of AU baseband but they say best for 850mhz (telstra) network
Thanks guys
Just tried the XXLF1 radio. I used the app GetRIL and it said that would be the best match for my rom but the 3g is still terrible.
