problem with HTC tytn hermes 200 - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam ROM Development

I bought an unlocked HTC TYTN Hermes 200 from a private party. He lives about 40 miles away from where I live and he used it with T-Mobile in California (I live in California also). Before I bought it, I tried it out (while I was in the same city that he lives in) with my T-Mobile SIM and made a phone call and the reception was clear.
Since I got home, I've had problems in 2 places (home and work which are about 5 miles apart) where I have 1 bar of reception and if someone tries calling me, it doesn't even show an incoming call on my phone, it goes straight to voice mail and if I try to call someone, it doesn't ring even once, it just says call ended. When I am at other places, I usually get decent reception (but not always).
I have tried flashing all of the recent radio firmware but nothing has made a difference. I also tried inserting another T-Mobile SIM and had the same problem. My previous phone (unlocked Treo 650) had really weak reception in those same areas but not this bad. The phone is not warrantied, according to HTC. I have made sure all my network settings are correct. It's running Windows Mobile 6. I think it might be a problem where the HTC antenna doesn't pick up a signal as well as weak T-Mobile reception.
Any ideas of what I can do about my problem ?

radio version?

I've tried every version from 1.38 to 1.48 and nothing changed with all of them. Right now I am using 1.40

Hmmm...
apparently there are no TyTn HW reason that can cause this problem...
Other peoples in that areas have low signal? (obviously yes)

wife has a razr with t-mo and it gets reception just fine. i dontknow anyone else with an htc.

Have you checked to make sure all the bands are active; like it is not set to only use certain frequencies and not others?

I have the band set to GSM (vs. Auto) and band is set to GSM(1900+850)+UMTS(1900+850). None of the other band settings seem to work.

oh and I updated the radio to 1.50. There is a small improvement where my phone rings half of the time when i call my cell from another phone.

HEY
I have had a simmilar problem in California, it doesnt make sence but what I did was flash the radio to the newest 1.50 and then re-install a new rom, and make sure you set the band selection to AUTO on both. NOT just the GSM-UMTS, but also the band frequency. and then power off the phone by pressing the off button and then turning it on. I have a TYTN too and HTC should warranty it, its guranteed for 2 years. Hope this helps.

jackieboy,
thanks for the tip. what rom are you using ? I am using black satin.
where abouts are you located ? I am about 1 hour east of los angeles I just want to get an idea if you are roughly in the same area as me.
Are you with T-Mobile also ?
After you did this, how many more bars of reception did you get ?
by the way, I changed network type from GSM to Auto and the band to Auto and no difference in reception. I haven't flashed a new rom yet though.

Try oficial ROM it cames with radio upgrade and is work very good for me.Also batery time increased .

Reception with S620 Excalibur

Okay, I need help, I thought my network was too blame but I think it may be the S620. I've had other phones they've all worked in my basement, but this phone keeps dropping calls.
How do I know if I'm using the right bands; that is 850/1900?
I'm getting sick of dropping calls..... It will show good sig one second and then drop to nothing. I updated my Rom to then one that is posted here and I thought it got better, but it didn't.
Other than the basement thing, the phone is perfect.... but I don't get how my A1200, L2, Vk2000, Treo 650, w810i all worked fine in my basement and not this one, is it the fact that it's a Smartphone?
Any insight is appreciated.... Thanks in Advance.
oh, I'm with Rogers in Canada.
previously some of the HTC smartphone radio firmwares were known to have problem with US GSM frequencies. Namely: HTC Tornado.
could you please post your radio frimware details, please?

ok, this is most recent ROm as far as I am concerned.
could you please do following:
in device Settings -->phone--> networks:
menu--> select network.
wait for the list to populate. now select the network you are with. confirm.
now change network selection form automatic to manual. confirm selection.
that should improve reception in low signal situation.
I do suspect that connection is being dropped as soon as signal level is dropped below certain level.
please let me know if that helps.

Yeah, as soon as there is one little bump or no bumps it goes silent and the call drops. I'll try the setting you gave and go from there. Thanks.
Can you please help with my reception.
Can someone please punch in *#*#364#*#* for me and tell me what line LAC reads. I believe this is what band the phone is using.
Mine is always on 1900, which would explain my calls dropping in my basement.
Please verify.
Thanks.

so much for that theory, I guess my network is not that good with this phone. My brother's 9100 doesn't drop calls in our basement so I guess it's just my phone.
4mynikka, my Dash does this too. I really like this phone but the constant dropping calls and the calls going silent then drop (in my home with 3 -4 bars in the signal) is driving me nuts. Yesterday the only way I could get a good signal was to stand on one foot by the window. This is 2007 and the reception issues like this should be non existant in these kinds of devices period.
If I don't find a solution I'm selling my phone. Maybe it'll work better in someone else's house

Momentary, I called into TMO yesterday shortly after I made that post yesterday. While on the phone with TMO, the tech did a test on my phone from there and then checked my area and discovered other complaints from TMO customers in this area and said the problem is due to some outages.
He asked me to remove my battery for 30 secs and power back up. After I booted the phone up, he then went on the say they should be back up and running full force by early this week and that my problems should go away...
Shortly afterward, I had my first 2 and a half hour conversation here at home. I must say, reception has been better than before now but its not perfect...doable but not perfect. I think those tests did something...whatever it was its working...

I think you're in the wrong forum, this is for Trinity not tytn, maibe there they will help you.

Random Reception problems

My Trinity has decided it's had enough of working and is doing some crazy stuff. Firstly if you have the phone in Automatic registration it never gets signal but will say G or 3G etc. At this point I cannot make or receive calls or texts. The only way I have managed to get it to work is by turning Auto to Manual and selecting the network..yet sometimes this doesnt work, it will show reception but calls and texts still dont work, Data works tho!!
The only way I can get a working phone is selecting GSM from the network type instead of Auto. Obviously it sounds like a 3G/UMTS problem with the phone, Sim works fine in other phones. Have tried reflashing ROM and Radio.
ANy Ideas
are you sure you have good 3G coverage in your area?
I would phone your operator.
I had a similar problem on Vodafone only when set to auto. The phone tries to pick up the 3G weak signal and so it's always droppin off and on.
The guy at Voda suggested that my phone was paired to a 3G base station several KM away, when it could have used the GSM station a few 100 metres away.
A plus of using GSM is battery life lasts much longer!
Of course there could be a hardware fault which would be unfortunate.

I assume that you've configured your phone to your operator and that you've tried different radio ROMS to ensure optimal "fit" between your specific PDA and network operator. If you haven't and none of sickboy555's suggestions work, maybe you should check these two alternatives out as well?
Cheers!

Well the problem initially started at random, did actually do anything, also I have tried about 4 different ROMS now and all have the same problem. I'm on
In terms of reception I have full 3G signal (4 bars according to the screen) as I am just outside the centre of the city yet nothing comes through but data. tis V strange. I may retry 3G when I'm somewhere else just in case its down to the local Cell.
I've decided to bite the bullet and just disabled 3G most of the time, if I need faster data I'll turn it on for that until I can upgrade to the TyTN 2. mmmmmm

Poor reception on new AT&T Tilt 2 - anyone else too?

All - upgraded from the TILT, aka Kaiser (which was flashed with a Sleuth ROM btw) to the AT&T Tilt2. I was using the stock ROM that AT&T ships on it, but was having wierd issues with the call reception. The voices seemed to cut out here and there, and were garbled.
After an hour and a half with Customer Care, they're shipping me a new phone. I was curious if anyone else was having the same issues with a TILT2.
When I swapped my SIM card back into my TILT all of the reception issues (same # dialed, same AT&T menu I listened to 4 times) went away.
Bad phone perhaps?

A bunch of us have complained about voice quality, voices sounding muffled. I have a replacement phone arriving tomorrow.
It seems that with each new generation the reception is getting worse in HTC phones. My Tilt held onto 3G and calls in my basement pretty well, didn't drop very much. My FUZE has noticeable worse service but was able to hold onto 3G in my basement. My Tilt2 can't even hold 3G and I have to switch to 2G in my basement. Very disappointing.
Tilt Reception
I am coming from a Fuze and have great reception with my Tilt2 in comparison. I could never get any reception with the Fuze and complained enough until ATT gave me a Tilt2 for $99.99. I flashed an Energy Rom and the latest Radio and it makes a huge difference over stock rom. Stock rom I got 1 bar, flashed radio/rom 3 to 4 bars! Awesome!!
I flashed a new radio and my car turned into a BMW!
No reception problems here... Or muffled, or low sounds from the earpiece...
DrumTJE - Which radio did you use?
I'm contemplating flashing myself - as the replacement phone today has hte same issues. Using field test, I can see about a -101 to -103 dbm strength from the towers. (To access it - *#*#364#*#* on the phone - can't use a saved contact though for it). I'm charging my Tilt to see if I can get a comparible number, or if it just seems to pull the signals in better.
Thanks for any information you can give me...

I find it the opposite. I have my original tilt, fuze and tilt2. At my cabin which is in a fringe ATT coverage area only my tilt 2 works reliably. I am lucky to get 1 bar most the time inside my cabin on the tilt or fuze and can do only txt messages but not calls on both. I have 2-3 bars and can make calls on the Tilt 2 in the same spots. This is by far the best reception HTC phone I have owned.
Even more interesting...
On my TILT, I'm getting -97db, and -98db usually, where the TILT2 is getting -100db to -101db. They change a little here and there, but no huge swings in the readings. Seems to me, from the evidence in front of me, that the TILT seems to work 'better' with a smaller signal.
I'm curious if a different radio will make things all that much better for me at this point.
I've gotten 4.49.25.17 - though I think I still need an additional file to be able to use the radio. (I know I need to Hard-SPL the phone first, then I can flash the radio - which I may do for giggles tonite to see apples to apples.)
Drum - hopefully you'll respond with the radio you're using, and if so - if you needed an additional file once you flashed it or if you just flashed the later 25.17 radio and whallah (after a turn-off/turn-on of course).
Thanks, as always.

How are you measuring the db's for the signal? Cold you post a CAB if it is a program?
Not sure if this is related, but my Tilt changes from 3G to E to G often while I am in a call... is that a reception issue or just a bandwidth issue on the ATT towers?

So first, -100db is a pretty poor signal. And the difference in -97 to -101 dbi is pretty nominal when you're talking about a low power cell signal.
And lower is better. -37 dbi is about the lowest most phones register that I'm aware of. I've never seen better than -37, anyway.
@Sphinx - no cab, sorry... Enter field test mode with the phone using the phone dialer and enter in the characters above... (the *#*#364#*#*)
Agreed - 100db is VERY low. But - apples to apples, my TILT was just fine. The TILT2 with the original ROM and Radio stunk.
Of course -the Energy ROM with the later radio seems to be working much better... Time till tell.
Thanks!
I'm having better luck so far with my Tilt 2. Had good luck with an 8525 at work. Moved to a Fuze and had issues with calls at work. Even tried different radios and found one that worked better but not much better. So far, the Tilt 2 is much better for me.
I was pretty worried before getting a call and the voice was clear.
I am using HTC 4.49.25.17 with Energy Rom Photon.
Even without the 'correct" rilphone.dll I get great reception
Hope this helps!
4.49 works awesome!
I am also using 4.49 radio with energy rom photon and my data and call quality are soooooooooo much better that the stock rom and radio.
@Drumtje - thanks for the info - I'm now using exactly what you are and while the quality has improved quite a bit it's still not the same as what I had with the standard TILT. I'm tempted to try a couple more radio's just to see what they do, though I'm not thrilled with the constant changing... I'm looking for stability here, and the ability to make calls without not hearing who I'm calling. I have had to reset the phone a number of times too once I loaded that ROM due to some freezing, but that might have to do with the activsync issues I've been having (and have finally resolved thru syncing only with bluetooth).
I'm also a little bummed out that the field test application in the standard factory rom's is not in the Energy ROM's. It was in the Sleuth ROM I used for the TILT though - which was nice because it gave hard data on the cell towers and the signal strength. It might make radio testing easier if we had that code in a CAB file.
my reception is fine but where ever i get low reception or it tends to switch from H to E alot i just turn off 3G and E holds strong for phone calls...but usually area that switch back and forth i dont usually need highspeed though i stay in the bayarea so theres few area that tends to switch back and forth between E and H
hope that helps
Mine is working really well. I have min 2 bars and it's holding 3g strong too. Better than my fuze was.
my reception is actually really good with the stock radio. Download speeds are fast too. It all depends on where you live I guess.
Seeing as there was interest, I went and dug up an .exe that you can put on your phone, run it, and see the Field Test data. If there's a Chef around who can convert it into a cab, that'd be nice. Otherwise, I think I uploaded it correctly as an attachment to this post.
It's working on my EnergyROM Proton fitted tilt.
drumtje - I'd be curious as to what your RSSI 1 reading is... (That's signal strength). Also - how many towers are you connecting to (above that in the readout - it'll give you the tower ID plus the signal strength of that tower).

Loss of signal, no auto reconnect.

I am having an issue on my One X (unbranded and unlocked) with the signal vanishing and not reconnecting unless I force it. I was wondering whether it effects all networks or just networks that use more than one carrier. Three has its own 3G network but it uses Orange 2G signal. I also saw a thread with the same issue on T-Mobile / Orange which is also dual carrier.
I am wondering whether it is the switch between these networks which is causing it to lose signal and not reconnect.
I have had several instances where my signal has an R next to it as if it is roaming, this would be when it is connected to the Orange 2G network, I never had this problem on my Desire HD or Sensation.
Does anyone know of any issues on Vodafone or O2 regarding signal loss or is it just networks which use multiple carriers.
My One X is stock and bootloader has not been unlocked.
Thoughts?

Are you still on the 126 SW?
As your unbranded then you should be able to get the 128 update.
With 126, my Three handset recieve level was about -88 to 91dbm.
With 128 its now at -75dbm in the same location.
Most, if not all of the roam to Orange has now been disabled, remaining where there is no Three signal at all.
Steve
No I have upgraded to 1.28, unfortunately I am still in an area where it does switch to Orange 2G signal.
It seems to hang on to 3G until I have virtually no signal, then goes to no signal and doesn't reconnect unless I force it. It seems to mostly happen when I put the phone away on my pocket so I dont notice I have no signal until I check my phone.
I lost signal today and to test the reconnect I left the screen on and I drove about 20 miles through large-ish towns and it didn't reconnect once, had to force it when I got home.
Not sure if this effects single carrier networks, O2 or Vodafone?

Have you had the same issue with any other handset?
Are you a new customer to Three and this is the first you have seen of this?
Reason I ask is when I was thinking of going to Three for my main phone, I tested with a handset I just used for tethering off the one plan.
I drove out of town to an area where I guessed there would be no Three coverage.
The signal hung on for ages but when it dropped I made a note of where it dropped. After a few moments the handset went over to Orange 2g. I then drove back home. I must of drove at least 5 miles past the point I noted earlier before the Orange signal itself dropped and had to force the handset to Three myself.
This sounds similar to your issue and was with a Desire S….but you say you didnt have this with previous handsets. All very strange
Steve
I've had a Desire HD and a Sensation both on Three and never had issue on either of these.
There must be something different about the way the One X handles the switch of signal, or maybe it's just faulty.
Might try some other SIM's from other networks, if that doesn't work I'll get a replacement.

I'm on three and it never seems to switch to gsm just looses signal all together and takes ages to reconnect once I move location. this is a proper pain I've had the phone replaced three times changed sim still not got better I'm thinking its the radio version on this phone or some software related issue.
If you're phone is from Three you won't get the update until Three release it.
I did see on another thread that Three won't be releasing 1.28 as HTC are currently working on the next update. Don't know how true that is.
My phone is unbranded and unlocked to any network, which is why I got the update.
Think I'm going to get a replacement and see if that's any better, hope it's not a general issue with the one X having lower signal.

If you dial *#*#4636#*#* on your phone and select phone info you can select GSM only which is 2G, this really improves signal but because it's 2G you are stuck on really slow data speeds.
If that is the case and you've had 3 replacements, maybe it's worth holding out for the next update to see if that fixes the problem.
I'm a little uneasy about returning it for a replacement as I don't have any other problems with it (bad screen seal, banding on display or yellow display) I may end up with more problems with a replacement.

Is any chance change three rom on factory rom?
I had similar issues to what you are describing with yours on my original unlocked/unbranded HOX on T-Mobile. I had issues on top of the ones you mentioned where it was also saying I had a signal and had appeared to lock up and would just drop the mobile network and say at the bottomg of the screen "preparing sim".
Most the time I was stuck with putting it in and out of airplane mode to make calls, only for them to drop or fail all together.
This was on both 1.26 and 1.28 FW. In the end I took mine back and swapped it and the replacement has been perfect since. so it was without doubt a hardware fault in my case!
Good luck solving your problem, but I would suggest taking it back and getting a straight swap.

You can't change you ROM unless you unlock the Bootloader at HTCDev and this will void your warranty with HTC.
Three will release an update eventually, and 1.28 is no better signal wise for me than 1.26 was!!

Interesting, I too had the Preparing Sim message until I got a new SIM from Three, this seemed to fix this message but I am still having Signal Problems.
I think I'll follow your lead and go for a replacement, I have to use Airplane mode to force the signal to reconnect as well.
Thanks
I can confirm I have these problems. I'm on three but the phone was from Dialaphone and with orange but is unlocked. I have exactly the same problems as those been described. This is a very irritating problem that makes me miss calls and texts in my poor 3 signal area.

I think you're best off to return it for a replacement, that's what i'm going to do. Hopefully that will fix my problem and not create any more!!
I have the same issue on my device. On my 2nd replacement and its still the same.
No problems with my iPhone 4S.
Hopefully a radio update will sort this out.

I think it might depend on location, in some areas the 2G signal (Three use Orange network for 2G) has been turned off. In my Area (South West England) I still have access to the 2G GSM Signal.
Obviously Three save a lot of money from turning off GSM and not paying Orange to use their network.
