Broken headphone jack - LG Nitro HD

The headphone jack on my Nitro HD recently started only playing out of 1 ear. I tried several pairs of headphones as well as blowing out the jack with compressed air, to no avail.
Anyone else experience a similar problem?
If there is no fix, I'm going to try my hardest to exchange my Nitro for a different phone...between the bad battery life, buggy CM9 nightlies, and now the broken headphone jack, I'm pretty fed up with this phone.

CM9 Nightlies are buggy because they're nightlies... not sure what you were expecting there. ICS starts pushing tomorrow afaik. And battery life really is comparable to other phones in this range. Are you sure that the headphone jack problem isnt a bug in CM9?

Compressed air might not really work well since there's nowhere for lint and whatever else might be in the headphone jack to go. You're just packing it in tighter.
I'd suggest using a toothpick or very small tweezers. It's pretty common to have a build-up of lint inside there over time, especially if you keep your phone in your pants pocket.

Tried a toothpick, didn't work. I checked the inside of the jack and it's clean; no lint. Seems like the jack is actually broken. A bit strange, since I've only had the phone for 3 months and it's been protected by a case the whole time. After handling a One X and a Galaxy Note at the ATT store today, the Nitro's build quality is definitely inferior in comparison.
Going to call AT&T tomorrow. I tried calling and asking to exchange for a One X (with me paying for the difference) today, but the guy said that particular department was closed and I'd have to call back on Monday.

I can tell you with absolute certainty that the headphone jack on the one x is vastly superior to the nitro's.

I have to ask... How is the JACK any better? These jacks have been pretty standard for what 20+ years now? If it sounds better, then that is software. If it is actually better designed, please inform me as to how this is so.

because it's on the one x.

It may have a better DAC, but I don't know what either the Nitro or One X has.
But yeah, the "jack" is just the port you plug the headphones into. If we're talking in terms of sound quality, that doesn't really come into play.

[Q] 3.5 Headphone Jack Issues

Hi guys!
I searched around for this problem, but couldn't find a good answer. I am using my Desire HD with the Klipsch Image S4 IEMs (great headphones!) and recently I have this very annoying issue.
Most times when I plug the headphones in they get recognized as a headset (with microphone and buttons) and the slightest movement causes the music player to start playing or change or song, or what's even worse, the phone to redial the last call.
At first I thought the headphone jack had gone busted so I tried with my full sized Beyerdynamic DT770 PRO cans, but I get the same issue. When I use the stock headset that came with the HD however, there's no problem.
I think what's happening is that the 3 part plug (as opposed to the 4 part of the stock headset) doesn't always make good contact, or it touches the connector for the 4th part briefly at insertion, and it creates this problem.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is it possible that the plug on the phone is busted? I don't feel like sending the phone in over such small thing, but it is pretty annoying...
Thanks!
I have the same IEMs as you do, and I have not noticed that problem. I had similar issues with my Xperia, cleaning the 3.5 mm female connector helped for a while, but I eventually had to send my phone back to be repaired.

Seen the same thing when using my external speakers, something goes funny with the resistance or capacitance.
Difficult to test unless you sacrifice the cable
Try cover the 3rd and 4th section with nail polish or some other non-conductive stuff.
Ideas? Maybe lookup the schematics of the jack and confirm contact areas, then fix up as needed.

I can easily get a 3 and 4 section jacks and cables on the cheap for testing purposes. Do you have an idea of how to go about testing it in some systematic fashion? I wouldn't mind cutting the cable of the headphones and soldering my own jack at the end of it if I am sure that it will work reliably.

Try measure the lengths accurately from the headset included with the DHD.
There might just be some overlapping. If that is not the case, it might be a bit problematic.

There's no overlapping, but the tip of the S4s is a tiny bit shorter and a bit thinner at the base of the last, topmost, part. Weirdly enough I just cleaned the tip a bit and that seems to have solved the problem for the time being...
Maybe the dirt was leading to some resistance? Do you know how the buttons work?

[Q] Faulty Headphone jack??

I had a blue GS3 before and the headphones fit snug and now I have a new white one and if I turn the headphone jack slightly it cuts out completely on one ear and is very loose crackly also.....should I take it in the store for a replacement or what?
I'm having the same problem. Pissing me off. I'm noticing that it's with mostly with aux cables with 2 levels instead of 3 (don't notice with the OEM Samsung cables)
*although I have the white one*
tried different roms too, same problem.. didn't have this issue with me gs2
Im gonna take mine to the tmobile store and see what they say. Ill respawn later

had that problem with a 3.5mm audio jack that was attached to the car. keep the audio jack plugged into your phone, reboot with it still plugged in, and it should start to work. that is, unless the wire is bad, or the base is too big- causing it to not go in fully.
is your headphone jack a right angle? i had the same issue with my one x that i returned but getting a headphone jack to jack adapter so instead of having a right angle and going to a straight one fixed it. waiting on a new adapter so i can try the same fix on my s3 that has the same issue with my right angle headphone jack...
having the same issue with multiple aux cables. rebooting while plugged didn't help

Solution
Yep, That's the same here. Turns out that the jack is 'kinda cheapo' plastic that is, and if like me you use larger headphones (non-earbuds) that the side to side pull of the larger plug will eventually force a contact pin to no longer make that contact. You can pull and twist the cord and sound comes in and out on one side. in my case the right side.
Solution: I bought a replacement Speaker/Headphone assembly. Took me less then 5 minutes to disassemble the device and pop in the new OEM part. Problem solved. I got the part here ---> http://www.2buya.com/spare-parts/components/genuine-samsung-galaxy-s3-i9300-speaker-intenna-ear-jack-gh59-12159a.html
I chose this rather then wait for Mobilicity to take weeks to get it fixed for me.
Note: Ignore the i9300 part label. The stock part I removed from my t-999v also said i9300 on it. There the same.
Did you test the headphones on anything else? Try another set of headphones?

Naturally. I tested on two identical Sony studio monitors, and a few earbuds. The problem was 100% hardware.
Have you guys tried cleaning out the headphone jack? Last time I had issues I had a little bit of lint stuck at the bottom and couldn't insert the headphone jack all the way in. Give it a shot and shine a light in, hopefully the issue you guys are having will just be a little lint!
Hope So

That's a possibility, albeit a slim one. I used a jewelers loop in my case. Inside are multiple contact pins. Not all are used for sound. One of my pins was 'pushed' inward. That's why jiggling the plug causes a temporary solution. After I removed the original part I dissected it. The pins are set into the molded plastic as a single piece. The pins themselves are a single ribbon bent to flex a bit.
I figure in my case to much flexing of a the heavier plug with the weight of the coiled cord (Sony MDR-7505 Headphones) caused it to mash inward as I walked around. I'll never know for sure.
I hope it is just lint in the OP's case. If not at least parts are available. Non OEM parts are even less then what I paid. That or just wait for the repair done by Samsung.

Using the Galaxy Nexus and I had just purchased the Klipsch s4a earbuds (amazing purchase for anybody who's an audio lover without incredibly deep pockets) and the audio kept cutting unless I had the jack placed in a specific manner --which is impossible to keep in a jacket, so I came across this thread and wondered how the hell lint can get into such a small hole. I checked by digging a toothpick till the end and scraping out a massive chunk.

I'm having the same problem, but for me it's worse when the headphones go too far down. In other words I intentionally put some tiny bits of paper into the hole and now it doesn't cut out as easily. But still if I move the plug too far to one side it'll cut off, which is really annoying when it's in my pocket and I occasionally bump the chord plug with my hand. I generally use iphone earbuds. I've read that the samsung jacks are a slightly different size than standard. This might contribute to the problem.

Where did you read that Samsung jacks are a different size? I have used several different 3rd party headphones and have not had a single issue. They all fit and work perfectly.
If anything is made with a different size, I'd be much quicker to suspect Apple before Samsung. They love building proprietary hw so people will be forced to do things their way!
Have you tried a different brand of headphones? It is possible the jack itself is messed up somehow too though.

Honestly I've only tried my old and new iphone earbuds. Both have the same problem, but what I discovered by shaving the plastic away from the tip of the jack is that the further in it goes the more it cuts off, hence shoving paper into the hole to keep it from going in too far.
Another thing I did notice is that this problem started when the headphones became much looser. When I first bought the SGS3 I had to really push hard to get the headphones into the phone. I could literally drop the phone from my pocket and it wouldn't detach and would just dangle from my ears. Now it comes out really easily. Clearly something isn't gripping well enough. That seems to be the real issue I guess, but I have no idea how to get in there and fix it. I don't want to risk breaking my phone trying to take it apart.
sounds like the inside of the jack is messed up. When you were having to push hard to put them in, it most likely bent or wore out the part it snaps into over time.
Only real solution to that, that I can think of, would be to replace the jack I'm afraid.

Headphone socket not working

Hi All,
Im sure I can't be the only one but is anyone else having a problem trying to get sound out of the headphone socket?
Any searching I have done shows a similar problem on the M8 after a firmware update.
I have had the phone less than 24 hours and have only transferred my numbers etc across with the HTC tool.
Im currently on 1.32.161.15.
The socket works as I am able to force the audio to it with soundabout from the play store.
Any help/advice appreciated.
Many Thanks

I'm still on 1.32.401.15 and no problem at all with the headphone socket tested with the earphones came along with the phone.
And wow what a sound, normaly im using my bleutooth headset and never use in ear phones but wow love the sound
Thanks for the info.
Ive been out all day and was using my old headphones that came with my sgs3.
Just tried the supplied ones and they are indeed recognised by the phone.
Sorry to have started this over what seems nothing and thanks for your help.

Headphone Jack stopped working
Hi. My headphone Jack just stopped working. I had this problem on my m7. Didn't expect it to still be an issue on the m9. Any solutions out there?
Clean the connectors this usually fixes most issues, fluff getting stuck in the hole is common and causes the most issues
The similar case happened to me once when I updated my M7 to a new Android OS. The phone still couldnot produce audio even I changed two new earphones, I was thinking about replacing the headphone jack. The problem solved the other day when I accidentally turned on the volume button! It's not about the headphone jack, it's because I turned the volume off! Well, that's really a shame.

Headphone socket [SOLVED]
First of all im taking credits cuz it wasnt me who came up w this idea.
1. Plug in your headphones ALL THE WAY IN
2.immediatly pull it out(just a little bit you will notice)
Repeat these steps until you see the icon pop up.
Works with m8 and m9 so far
Hi,
My phone recognizes that the headphones are plugged in, and the icon shows up for them. However, there is still sound coming out of my phone, although it's muffled. I thought it might be a problem with the headphones, until I tried them on my other devices and they worked. I'm not sure what to do.

Just get a paper clip or other stiff thin object and push in the pluck out the debris if any from inside, pocket lint can stop the headphone jack from going all the way in, you'd be surprised how much can come out of it.
I'm having a similar problem, but it's earphones WITH a mic that don't work. Otherwise earphones without a mic seem to work just fine.
Any suggestions?

Clean the fluff out of the socket. Then you wont be able to see any of the plug when you plug it in!.

Z5P headphone jack

Hi,
I'm just curious if this is only my case or it happen to someone else.
In the headphone Jack it seem to be a little gap between the metal and the jack, and if u plug some headphones the jack can move a little like if its loose
Also sometimes it don't detect my iphone headphones(it have a mic), but a normal headphone always works.
Anyone have this issues too ?
Same thing here about the headphone jack, it moves as well and I can even push it in sometimes. What I don't know is if it is intended or not.
Your Apple headphones should work with sound, mic and basic control functions (skip, play, pause, answer call) The only thing that should not work is advanced control functions (decrease/increase volume). In your case there could be a problem with the headphones itself. Do they work flawlessly with other devices?
ty for replay KbaB.BroS
the headphones seems to be working fine, probably was some dust, its my first time I use some headphones in the Z5P since i bought it like 1 month ago.
Im still worried about the jack, hope its like that because of the waterproof protection. Its not like im going to use it underwater but dont want to get some issues because of that.
In my Z3 seems to be almost perfect, there is no gap, but it can move a little bit, never tried the z3 underwater so i dont know if it was properly sealed.
Hope more ppl could tell us if its normal.
It's the same on my Z5P too. There's a little gap between the jack-(hole) and frame which causes a very little movement of the jack- stick... Sorry for the weak English
Mine too!!! It just started. My apple headphones stopped working (first time i had problems with it) and it really moves, i got really worried and remembered this threads name( i had seen it before while browsing)
. Has anyone tried water test after this "problem" ??????? Well it should be working fine i think.. Well we will see tomorrow at morning shower lol. I really paniced cus i have unlocked bl so warranty is void
Think this is the case for all the Z5P devices. Mine does the same (wiggles around a little). Sometimes for whatever reason the headphone jack doesn't detect my headphones properly. Same thing happened with my Xperia ZR/A. I think the problem is that it's not detecting the proper pins on the 3.5mm headphone plug. Since the device can recognize 5 pins some things might be misaligned causing it to think that no headphone is plugged in. That's my best guess. I don't think there will be any water problems though. In fact, it's probably only this way because of the water proofing since they need to properly seal things on the inside while leaving the jack exposed.
Wow same for me, but my headphones works without any problems, so I think it's the same case for all Z5P maybe that is the reason why Sony say "Don't put the phone on water"

Hello Everybody
Iv been using the Sony Z5 Premium for about less than a year so far since its release to the world. Had this issue as well with the jack not reading any earphones plugged in it at times since the beginning even before and after using it under water. Had no problems so far despite falls, etc. But for now the jack is not reading any earphones, having hard time to make it work and in order for it to read it i need to move it a little. I fairly believe the reason is coz of the sealing process of the jacks on the phone since its water proof, if you notice there are black plastic parts inside the jacks and become movable as well which is why they interfere and make it hard for the USB plug earphone metal to touch the inner metal of the jack which then does not read the earphones, etc. If having such phones with water proof then better be careful and extra cautious when using plugs. And so far i have noticed its a common issue with the phone itself.
Problem is that im looking forward to finding a way to fix it although i dont want to open the phone (internal opening/maintenance) for if it is open then will not be water proof anymore.
If ever used in/under water make sure you dry it after by using a brush on the tight hard to reach areas, a med-cold air blower, etc on the jacks & stuff. Beware i do not suggest using the phone in sea since salts will dry and pain to clean afterwards. And one great thing about the phone is that it does not condense/fog in the inside unless if it does then you need to do maintenance to your phone for it is open, An example is just like a watch.
Hope this was helpful and my bad if this is long, since were all in the same club of Sony phone users lol.
Goodluck to Everyone & Hope we all get to fix it.

Hi Cevellio (and everybody else),
we discussed this problem in a thread in the general section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-premium/general/z5-premium-audio-jack-failed-t3352062
If the jack moves it disconnects the flat cable, and the solution seems to be swapping the entire frame because (at least in my case) I replaced the jack socket with a new one but it's still moving and can't stay in place.
When you remove the jack socket you still have a "pipe" inside the hole in the frame that holds the socket in position, I think it's the broken piece.

How good are the B&O earbuds?

So like most of you, I took advantage of the free earbud promo. It's awesome that they're free, but I was wondering just how good they were? I currently have a pair of Klipsch X4i's that were also $150 back when I got them a bit under a year ago. I just didn't know if the B&O's were really an upgrade at all.

For a true audiophile user, they will just ignore these iem, it doesn't complete with your klipsch, for a normal user they are considered good, enough to bring out decent qualtity sound from the phone.
They're deemed good. But it seems a lot of peeps overlook the fact they're rated for 20hz to 16khz. No iem is going to come close to 20hz proper and 16khz? That's 4khz you're missing on the top end. Real instruments I would imagine sound weird with that much roll-off. When I saw the dynamic range was missing 4khz I immediately changed my mind to sell them. Other than that, they have been well received by users. Only other problem is there are many versions of this iem. Some tend to fall apart quicker than others. Some reviews I've read it was definitely abuse. From using these to workout with and people complaining jacket or sleeve fell off pulling several inches from jack instead of the jack itself. If you can get $100 for these I am quite sure you can use that money and find a better ear/headphone. Or pony up another $50 and options really open up.
has anyone got any confirmation of the BO earbuds being processed or shipped out yet????? The Samsung turnaround on their previous promo was literally 5-10 days....

B&O earbuds
I travel quite a lot, and have the noise-cancelling B&O H3 ANC's already - they're better than Bose in terms of sound quality, but not quite as good active noise cancelling. Definitely great for on a plane. When I really care about audio quality, I have better can options (though they don't do as well with noise cancelling).
With the DAC listening to FLAC music, there's a definite improvement in sound. That said, the H3 are middle of the road buds. I have a headphone amplifier that I use for cans; it made no difference to the H3 ANC. Still, compared to the free headphones you normally get with a cell phone, these are light years better.
I just got the above email myself.

Anyone else getting some static with the b&o earbuds?
Got the email stating that they have shipped.

I received them...was #441 in the signup.
They are decent. I don't believe their impedance is too high to demand a high drive but they trigger the quad DAC mode. Nice to have them definitely. Not sure why they would be worth $150...

I've been using the headphones that came with my Note 7 on the V20. Sound was I thought decent, just got my H3 headphones yesterday and OMFG the difference is quite amazing
I'm not an audiophile so these are perfect for me. Definitely has opened my eyes(well ears really) to just how Crappy some headphones are made.

I am having issues though, I will plug them in and get high impedance mode, unplug and do it again and get normal audio device, then again and get an external audio device is connected, wtf
Also when in high impedance mode, it says sound adjusted for devices 50ohm to 500ohm and the rating on the H3 is only 18ohm though I thought
What promotion are u guys talkin about?

Mine came in today and are complete garbage. I hear a bunch of static if the plug is touched or moved slightly. In one phone it only works out of one ear unless I insert it just right and as soon as the plug is moved back to one ear.
**edit. It turns out they come with some sort of oil/film on the plug that has to be cleaned off with rubbing alcohol . I didn't have rubbing alcohol so I just used my shirt and the static is almost gone.
The connector plug is ****ing garbage. It sits in there very loosely. Wtf!?
None of my other headphones have loose plugs.
Edit: my apologies, I wasn't inserting them all the way lol!

Then plug is definitely different than all of my other headphones. I had the same problem at first. I also had the static issue which I managed to resolve.
