Best navigation? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Hey I'm very happy with my Google navigation. But there was an issue that I thought I wouldn't have anymore. I lost my data connection due to a rally event deep in PA today. What's the best navigation that doesn't require a data connection? I used to use Co piolet back in the day.

I've been trying to get a good app too. I wish they had tomtom for Android... Hopefully soon....

Well im sure you know google maps is kinda 3 apps mixed in to one but ive seen on cnet . com was apps that you can DL the maps you wanted for offline Nav

Maverick is really good and you can download maps for use offline
I like my Roms the way I like my women..... Clean and smooth

I love Sygic, stopped trying others long ago, NDrive was nice but pricey, CoPilot had some bad ideas for my hometown (wrong way on one way streets, inaccurate destinations, etc).... however, my testing was over a year ago, and things improve. I bought two licenses on sale previously, use it on my phone and tablet.

Sprint navigation

I'm running 2. 2 stock and noticed Sprint navigation is now a lite version and for the turn by turn its 9. 99 a month. What's up with that

your wrong, thats what, haha.
IDC if it says its 9.99, subscribe and you will not get charged anyway.
sprint nav glitch's out like that all the time on new phones, new updates and hard resets.
Uhh, why are you using Sprint Navigation? Google's Navigation is, IMO (and the opinioin of EVERYONE I talk to) far superior, and guaranteed free.
Search Google--this problem hit a bunch of people, including me. Suddenly my mac was 2.8 Lite just when I needed traffic (Thu). It's fixed itself since, although it might have the power cycles I did Friday to get USB tether working.
As for why Sprint Nav vs Google-live traffic, better route options.

I think Sprint is better.

Sprint nav has been more accurate for me. I used both to visit a friend in Arlington and noticed the directions were different at the very end to get to his house. I followed google nav directions but it just sent me in a circle. Switched back to Sprint nav and it took me to the house no problems.
Your mileage may vary, and it's probably dependent on location. The subdivision that I went to was fairly new, maybe 6-7 years old.

Thanks for all the feedback, Sprint navigation did go back to normal, not sure why or what triggers the lite version to show up. My wifes Evo and mine did it the same time I found it weird they both did it together. I have tried Google maps its nice and all. But I'm not ready for change i like sprints version and I'm use to it. It took me awhile to like android. I still miss my Windows phone and if Sprint have a phone with 4+ inch screen with Windows 6. 5 id take it. I don't like a lot of change. Although I do love my evo

MyTracks JPO GPS Test

Have a look for yourself :
this map: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0&msid=214669121180202010109.000493edee971e49e3f4e
Decided to go for a drive around East Glasgow to test JPO's GPS and to be honest, its all over the place.
Will post some more maps if wanted. Doing all this from my sgs as we speak. Would have recorded a longer track but MyTracks stopped due to poor signal.
Wow this definitely sucks, i guess the gps-problem is still not fixed at all!!!
Yep :/

I returned my Galaxy S...waiting on a new one. The problem? GPS was crap! I think all first Gen Galaxys have this problem unfortunately.
Hi, When do you expect to get it back and tell if its any better?
I think a bunch must have been faulty. I've got an early i9000 and the GPS has always been fine since JM1 new and all the Froyos:
http://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie...95272957205427.000490a10b58cd60875c3&t=h&z=12

I wonder if Samsung will do something about this GPS crap. I did not spend a ton of money on a high end device to get GPS performance that is far worse than any phone I owned.
Mini works grate on JPO,
http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=U....65176,4.816904&spn=0.018381,0.05506&t=h&z=15
Recorded the same road twice (had to pick up somebody) so you can see it work pretty good
So i went from work to a friends house, to the supermarket, and then to the adres i was invited to eat
How did you track the road ?

Although mine is far from perfect on XWJPA, it's usable at least.

Hmmm, my GPS performance has been consistently crap. I have a 16GB SGS from Carphone warehouse which was I think part of the first batch.
EDIT: Oooooh, I've got an idea. A friend has an Orange UK SGS, and I've got the older one. I'm going to update his to JPO now that there's a 3br fix for efused phones too. I'll do a mytracks test concurrently on both
EDIT 2: If there's a noticeable difference, I'm sending mine back to Samsung
EDIT 3: If you're wondering, that's my depiction of mixed emotions ^_^
I get the feeling that the gps hardware is just crap.
At the given price with the given features, the Galaxy S seemed too good to be true... Lags and the worst gps I have ever encountered prove that it was.

Tomtom?

Is there Tomtom navigation software for android that would install to the SGS2?
Also I haven't really tried out the built in google navigation properly yet, but does it do as good a job as tomtom and does it come with traffic camera alerts?
Thanks.
No Tom \Tom never used navigation i dont get lost .
You need to try answer is probably not as good as Tom Tom but free .
jje
Tomtom will release an android version in the future but the date is not known yet.

Navigation is very basic, but since it's free you have to expect that. Saying that, it is very good. I've used 4 or 5 different satnav apps over the years (always on mobiles - never dedicated) and I judge them on how well they take me through central London, as it's a bit of a tightly-packed maze if you don't know where you're going. Google Navigation has done that for me many times without fail, so I use it and trust it.
There are downsides, however. It needs a data connection to plan the route. I've read that it doesn't need it again after that, but I'm not convinced. If it doesn't need data then why does it tell me it's lost data connection when I go through a tunnel? Also, I recently had to find my own way around a closed road because Navigation doesn't give you the common option to avoid a part of the calculated route. That was not fun!
Sygic Aura seems to be getting quite a lot of attention, and you get a 25% off code when you purchase it. XDA, being what it is, has a thread where people are posting their codes...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859223&highlight=sygic+aura
You get 25% off, and then post your code so that the next person gets 25% off. This is sometimes a great community
Hope this helps mate
Thanks guys.
johncmolyneux, I'll give it a try, though I'm not sure what that data connection is about. I did a quick test from in my house the other night and input a route to my mum's house and it came up with the route directions and voice instructions. I've got the old tomtom navigator 6 and navigator 7 with traffic camera alerts on my touch diamond. I think what I'll do is get hold of any old sim card just so I can use that phone as my sat nav, at least, if I find I'm not happy with google nav. And thanks for the link about Sygic Aura!
copilot is very good! works fantastic on sgs2, very cheap to buy as well, a must buy for an alternative for tom tom

Yeah, I'd be interested to know which is better out of copilot and sygic aura for reliable navigation and traffic cameras.
tomtom is in development for android

Really thinking about getting a Nexus but...

I currently have a g2x still, however it is driving me insane lately. It really chaps my arse paying so much each month for a phone that is just so buggy. My biggest gripe although not huge to alot of people is the gps on the thing. It SUCKS. always has. Anyway that is my question, How is the gps on the nexus. I used to use navigation quite a bit on my phone but since the g2x sucks I can't really use it. I'm sorry if there are many posts about it but I'm on vacation and my internet time is very limited. (wife and kids are napping. lol) Thanks for any advise guys.
GPS works fine.
Not the best but still works awesome. No complaints.
butter and jelly please...
My wife literally locks on within 5 seconds, even when I'm in my house heading out. It was much faster for sure than my G2 (previous phone).
GPS on GN is excelent

The GPS hardware on the GN is really accurate, my complaint is with the way it handles phone calls when you are using navigation. When a call comes in the phone app jumps to the foreground, when the phone call ends the phone app stays up. To add insult to injury the screen then goes blank. I've gone back to my Garmin.

GNEX gps is lightning.
Out of the box it was quicker than any i had used before.
After installing AOKP and radio xxla2 i can lock on to 7-10 satellites (normally 8or9) in well under 10 sec's.
I believe it is a European radio, but I live in New Zealand and was recently in Thailand which locked on to 7/8 satellites in under 10 sec's
I have now installed the JB radio with the same results but a better phone signal.
Thanks for the responses guys. It kinda irks me to buy a phone add old as the nexus... But it's a great deal IMO, and I really need something. This G2x is driving me crazy.

The hardware is oldish and has lower specs than some phones now....
But probably the fist phone to receive 4.1 + 4.1.1
The support for the phone is fantastic and the dev's here at xda are non-stop adding features, stability and speed.
Tools, Roms, Kernels, Radios.... will be developed on this phone first.
Outta the box a good phone, the guys at xda make it a f#%*$n great phone.
I just got mine a month ago. My requirements were AMOLED and 720p screen, and the Nexus is still my choice if I were to buy one now. The only time I'll be feeling the need to upgrade again is when they release a phone with an AMOLED 720p using the RGB sub pixel layout. In the Nexus line anyways, I can't be on the update backburner now after being first in line.
processor/gpu, meh, it's a touchscreen only phone, I don't use it for high end gaming. Otherwise all the high end phones perform pretty damn similar the rest of the time, regardless whether it's quad or dual core.
Ordered it this morning. Now I'll play the waiting game.

This phone's specs have been passed and will be floored by others in the next year, but as a Nexus phone, it'll always be relevant.

To be honest man copilot used to be great but ever since Google Maps came out with their navigation it's so much better and reliable

I have and use copilot. . I week would suggest trying to force Co pilot closed reopen and see if that fixes things. ..
