Sprint navigation - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm running 2. 2 stock and noticed Sprint navigation is now a lite version and for the turn by turn its 9. 99 a month. What's up with that
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App

your wrong, thats what, haha.
IDC if it says its 9.99, subscribe and you will not get charged anyway.
sprint nav glitch's out like that all the time on new phones, new updates and hard resets.

Uhh, why are you using Sprint Navigation? Google's Navigation is, IMO (and the opinioin of EVERYONE I talk to) far superior, and guaranteed free.

Search Google--this problem hit a bunch of people, including me. Suddenly my mac was 2.8 Lite just when I needed traffic (Thu). It's fixed itself since, although it might have the power cycles I did Friday to get USB tether working.
As for why Sprint Nav vs Google-live traffic, better route options.

I think Sprint is better.

Sprint nav has been more accurate for me. I used both to visit a friend in Arlington and noticed the directions were different at the very end to get to his house. I followed google nav directions but it just sent me in a circle. Switched back to Sprint nav and it took me to the house no problems.
Your mileage may vary, and it's probably dependent on location. The subdivision that I went to was fairly new, maybe 6-7 years old.

Thanks for all the feedback, Sprint navigation did go back to normal, not sure why or what triggers the lite version to show up. My wifes Evo and mine did it the same time I found it weird they both did it together. I have tried Google maps its nice and all. But I'm not ready for change i like sprints version and I'm use to it. It took me awhile to like android. I still miss my Windows phone and if Sprint have a phone with 4+ inch screen with Windows 6. 5 id take it. I don't like a lot of change. Although I do love my evo

Sprint Navigation... Premium?

I remember reading in past months about people not knowing why Sprint Navigation Premium comes up on some phones and not others, as opposed to normal Sprint Navigation.
Some people called Sprint tech support on the issue, and tech support couldn't even figure out why some phones were being pushed with premium and some people.
Now I loaded up the Sprint Nav app (Specifically 2.8.1098 on android 2.2) and there's actually an option to upgrade to sprint navigation premium for $4.99 extra a month.
LOL? joke?
First tech support couldn't figure out how some phones were getting it in the first place. Now they figured it out and are charging extra for it? Okay they obviously knew and didn't want to tell anyone what was going on.
Sorry, I don't think an extra $4.99 a month is worth it for weather implementation. I think i'll hit the home button, and look at my home screen widget to see the weather, then switch right back.
I know this seems like a rant, but i'm not trying to make it seem like one. I just figured I'd let the people know who were curious about this issue of not being able to get sprint nav premium on their phones.
I actually use and like sprint navigation better than google nav. For my personal trips, routes and traffic seem a lot better.
you are correct about the hole premium thing its a joke everything it gives you with prem. is actually built into the phone in one fashion or another, the biggest thing is that it lets you use speech to text w/o calling the number. i was on the phone with tech support for one of my b.b. customers for two hours with no resolve, on blackberry it teases you with premium for ten days and goes away forever no option every to upgrade

Will you root?

Whose going go root their device? Im thinking about it just for google wallet but im hearing its unsecure. Any inputs

if the root process is available for the vzw galaxy nexus by the time i get home, i will root it instantly. like you said, google wallet is the biggest reason followed by the fact i need to tether. google wallet isn't unsecure, i use it on my nexus s daily and wouldn't give it up for the world.

That is an extrmely good point. I left part of me behind when I left my 3vo, and this is the first thing that came to mind when I get home with it from work tomorrow. Not now. Def gonna leave it the way it is for a week or so.....but we'll have to see how that goes haha

The big security flaw is using your phone on ANY cell phone service. They track who you call, how long your calls are, who you txt, what the txt is, what cell towers you're connected to, when you pay your bill, with what credit card or check, also your name, address, oh and they know your phone number!

I plan to use a lot of time exploring the phone on stock for about 10 days and then root.
Won't be rooting, see no need for it.

i rooted mine on the first day, mostly becouse i want a recovery backup on the stock rom from day 1 with clockwork recovery.
I guess there is some consumer appeal, but really, why buy a Nexus if you have no interest in an unlocked phone? My decision to buy a Nexus was far less about firmware updates than it was about my right to own the hardware that I paid for.
To be honest, I didn't read the thread (shame on me), but these topics puzzle me. To each his own.
Google Wallet has some security risks in general for any device. Recently read the following from droidforums..... http://www.droidforums.net/forum/dr...s-news+(DroidForums.net+News+::+Android+News)

I'll root when CM9 hits beta or if a good stable nightly.
Yes, but so far only to be able to restore app data (ie Angry Birds) from my old phone. I'm totally cool with the built-in ICS disable/freeze feature for the apps I don't want, I think that's an extremely fair compromise over rooting and deleting the apk/so files.
Not too concerned about Wallet yet, we'll see how that pans out if it's something we'll need to root for or just something we can head to the Market and install without any issue. I would like to try it out and have zero confidence that the competing ISIS thing won't completely suck in comparison, so if root is needed, root it is!

If you want a private conversation phones are not the way to go. Back in the day we had to hard tap your line for LE with warrant. Now with CALEA and digital switches they can monitor traffic anywhere anytime w/o warrant.
Sometimes we put lines on speaker all day to monitor for noise. If your neighbor had wet line issue or cross talk we might monitor your line for noise. I worked in a 900 number telephone switch in California we have to check lines for "traffic" or people talking before working on them. It was awkward. Now I can monitor phone calls from my computer. Of coarse I don't unless it is for work I don't want to end up in Guantanamo.
Wow how off topic WTF happened?

Tethering with the Nitro

This may be a generic Android question and not so much a Nitro issue, but I'm new to android so I apologize if it's out of line.
I see that there are ways to tether built right into my stock software, but I'm afraid if I use them AT&T will pick it up and switch me from my Unlimited Data plan to a tethering plan. I've been told about PdaNet 3.0, but haven't yet downloaded that. Any thoughts?
They probably will. I would wait until there is a version of CWM or some other close to vanilla Android build for the phone personally.

Thanks for the reply, but it's a little over my head. From my minimal Android knowledge I think CWM means ClockWorkMod, but I don't really know what that is. I've got some learning to do.
I do get your point though.

been tethering with the native app for a while (edited the entitlement check line to activate it). No problems here. I don't abuse it though, just basic web browsing when i tether.
Yeah, CWM is ClockWorkMod. Basically, it's something dev's can use as a platform to create files to flash to your phone (including software that will take everthing back to stock if you mess up). It also provides a relatively simple, if initially intimidating, way for a user to install roms and other mods that devs provide.
Once CWM is on a phone, developers are able to make much cooler things to play with, from streamlined and customized stock roms, to completely different roms such as AOSP (Android Open Source Project) roms. These are stock android roms. You also can get CyanogenMod roms (Such as CM9 which is Icce Cream Sandwich) ported to your phone at that point. The AOSP and CM roms can take a while to get here, but devs can sometimes slip goodies like tethering into a customized version of the stock rom (the one from LG). They did on my phone anyway.
On any relatively new phone, there's always the wait till CWM is ported to the phone. After that, things pick up rapidly.
Hope this helps. I remember asking the same question (and many more like it). You get the hang of it real fast.

How did you edit the entitlement check? I probably still won't do it, but I am very curious. I don't trust carrier and manufacturer customized roms.

Check out page 6/7 in the LG Nitro Root thread in the dev section. You have to trigger the hotspot on once, to get AT&T to tell u that u don't have the proper plan, and the line will appear in line 66.
setting storange/settings.db/secure
Get there using SQLite editor.
E_Man,
When I get back to my computer I'll hit the thanks button. I have a lot to learn, but here's how I equate some of it.
Is CWM kinda like Cydia on the iPhone? I jailbroke my 3GS a few different times, but this android stuff is all Greek to me. There was always a tutorial to be found with every new jailbreak, but I've only seen one for rooting the Nitro and it's still over my head.
Sent from my LG-P930 using XDA App
Actually, using iphone terminology, cwm would be more like open iboot or something. It's a recovery mode that allows you to back up, restore, or install roms. There is no cydia equivalent in android afaik. Almost all the cool tools, tweaks, and apps are available in the market. Rooting is pretty much the same thing as jailbreaking.

Ah I see. I have noticed that most of the things I had to jailbreak for are already in the android marketplace. The availability of all of that and the freedoms that android offers are what made me ditch iOS. The main reason, though, is because I kept hearing how supportive the android community is. So far you guys seem pretty helpful. It's on me to learn as much as I can. I just have to find the right spot to start gaining info. Much of what I've come across is over my head.
You picked a good phone to convert to. The display on this phone is AMAZING!!! My HTC Inspire looks like a VGA monitor to me now.
Is anyone else using the built in tether option? Any foul play from AT&T?
I'm using it. Don't abuse much (other then listening pandora radio on laptop 8 hours a day), but other then that basic web browsing. So far so good, nothing from ATT (yet I already received sms when had Atrix, but then I was streaming movies from my computer at home, was going 20gb a month. Now I'm about 10gb a month (which I know is high), but it's all because of pandora, it would be the same if I was using phone's app for that anyway.
Although I'm not on contract and won't loose sleep if I have to switch company, for what I pay now I sure can find a better deal elsewhere.

Wow, nice. I am usually under 3 GB, but tethering on my HSPA+ Inspire was hardly a good experience. I'm sure I'll get above that if I tether on my Nitro. Glad to know you can get around 10 GB without them flipping out on you. I was under the impression you'll receive the SMS right over 5 GB.
Are you guys also on the unlimited data plan without the tethering feature?

I forgot to mention I'm in non-LTE area. Also as far as I can remember for at least 2 years, after 15th of each month they slow down the network from about 10am to 7pm from 800kb/sec to 80, regardless of my usage. Still its fast enough for pandora and little web browsing.

Wait a minute... You use 10GB a month tethering and don't get hassled by AT&T? I was told that with Android devices they can't detect whether or not you're tethering or just using alot with certain apps. It must be true.

SFL: your phone can be traced by the following numbers:

So I guess my mom is tracking my phone with the sprint family locator, one I figure this will drain battery because my location will constantly be sent, two I don't want my mother knowing when I'm getting high (jk, but I do enjoy privacy), and 3 I beleive she's tracking my father to. This wouldn't be bad except he doesn't want her to, not to bring you guys into my family life, but they just got divorced and long story short they don't trust each other and my father doesn't want her tracking his phone as she's lied to him about this tracking thing before.
SFL is most likely a hidden stock all or just something like ciq hidden in running programs somewhere.
My question : Is there a way I can prevent it from tracking my father and my phones? Such as deleting the service, in installing the app through root, or any way really.
Second question, if I did this would she know through say a notification we cannot be tracked anymore, or perhaps it just won't show up at all?
Thanks guys.

I installed and tried the app. It only has to be on the primary account holders phone and tracks through gps. I tried tracking my families phones and my girl turned her location services off, so it wouldn't track her phone. Try turning your location services off in settings.

Actually, I have had the locator still able to find phones even if the person has GPS extra off. The only way is to use roam control and use verizons tower. I'm not one hundred percent sure, but I think the locator triangulates your location from the cell phone towers.

Yeah but you could drive around where it says they are all day and not find them. Not that that isn't the case with gps in a building as well. I get good reception for gps in my house but the accuracy bounces around to wider than this block a lot of the time.
If your under 18 there isn't much to say. People want to be left alone and or rebel. But when your a minor and a dependent of someone not only is anything you own their property they are responsible for you.

Just force roam, I don't think there is any other way honestly. But I know that is a for sure method.

The phone triangulates off the towers. It shouldn't matter if you turn GPS off. The force roam idea may work, if he keeps his GPS off. Depending on how often she is checking it, she'll know something is up if the phone is on and the service is not working. (Trust me, I get calls like this all the time.) If you do a change of ownership you keep the same phone number, same contract dates, no ETF, thus you would still get his upgrade. If you roam too much you'll get terminated. Best solution is get a boost mobile and use *73 and leave the sprint phone at home when he's traveling.
She may still catch on, but it could take a while.
If you have a Google voice number integrated with your sprint number it will prevent sfl from obtaining your location. It did for me anyways. It either doesn't affect everyone or others haven't noticed. I haven't found any official confirmation anywhere yet.

My point was there is probably no way to stop her from tracking him, seeing what numbers he calls and texts. With the phone in her name, unfortunately for you and him, there is no way to stop it. Also even without sfl, she can see any number he texts by requesting the info from sprints security department. I have done it myself. its an easy process.

Sprint Rant

Long story, but I switched to Sprint from Verizon back in March after ten years. I purchased the White Epic Touch and sure enough my problems began. I had the phone 28 days and my screen goes out. Bam 35.00 for a refurb. I have that phone for 3 months and take ICS update. Everytime I plugged it to the charger my phone would overheat. Bam 35.00 fee for the tech to do factory reset and have the same problems when I left. I woke up two weeks ago to a black screen. No response. Bam 35.00 and they sent me a new one. I woke up today with a dim screen and find out my screen is burning out so these idiots try to charge me another 35.00 and I said no way! So after arguing with Sprint for about 4 hours they finally replace it then kindly say the phone is on backorder and it could be up to 30 days to receive it. I ask if they have any black ones in stock and they basically tell me im screwed until my name pops up om the list and a phone becomes available. I dunno, but this old boys about to take his 4 lines back to Verizon. More expensive and less hassle. Sprint is so lacking I never imagined. I knew there network was bad, but figured they made up for it elsewhere. Guess not! I figured up that since march I have spent around 21 hours in the Sprint store. I also figure that all those fees had I known I could have sold this one added that amount to what I have gave Sprint for a Gs3. Sad

Are you looking for some help or using custom roms and see if some of your issues can be fixed that way? I just don't see the reason behind you ranting on a development forum. I can see this in sprint community forums. Thats all.
Edit: And I am a BIG believer in never switching providers when something is working just fine with original provider. I work in fios tech support and whenever someone tells me that everything was working fine before switching and I hate your service... I always think in my mind.. Why the hell did you switch? Save 10-15 bucks vs the peace of mind of working service? Not worth it.

You know what's funny is 90 percent of the people that complain to you probably had to do a simple power cycle to get things working again.

I'm a tech at Sprint and I think its kinda funny that every phone that you received craps out. I would say get TEP then you don't have to pay $35 for these issues. Don't rant about how Sprint is crap when you do not take advantage of all of your options.
Verizon does not offer on-site technicians . They would simply tell you buy another phone full price or go to asurion and pay a &150 deductible

Well onley thing is I had one phone in 10 years mess up and they did replace it free of charge. I do have a question for you since you work for Sprint. Ive noticed everytime I go in there all the people in this store always have the latest phone. When I baught the Epic they had it. Evo LTE came out they had it. Now I noticed all three of the same people at this store carry an S3. Went by there today and two of them was showing off there Iphone 5 to customers. This is a contract store not corp. It just irritated me when the rep talked about Sprints cost going up because of exchanges on bad phones. There could be but I highly doupht these people are making enough money to buy the new phones every month. Just curious

I would also say that I think the main stem of the problem with all the phones I have went through with Sprint is lack of qaulity control and proper training of employees.

Sprint does not manufacture the phones , Samsung does. However that's why we have good technicians who check for liquid damage, because if we don't we send them off to get refurbished and we endup giving a liquid damaged device to someone else.
That being said that's why its good to be honest if you liquid damaged a device. But people would rather lie and hope a tech just replaces it , and screw sprint and other customers just so they can get something for free.

I don't work for sprint but I used to work for cingular wireless and afaik the store always wanted us to carry the latest devices so we could 'demo' them to the customers... think of it as eyecandy.
In fact, I had my own phone from sprint and another device from CW, I was not allowed to use my sprint device for obvious reasons but had to have whichever device from CW visible and sometimes using a BT headset for demo purposes. If I can recall correctly, those devices were written off once another one came up.

I got 2 Epics last year in Oct, his and hers and had only one hicup in 11months, when the ICS update rolled out the wife wanted to try it, so she accepted the update and it did not go well, horrible battery life, apps not working weird charge cycles and a bunch of other fowleups, later I tried a couple of custom roms, but that was just a bandaid , phone was not a daily driver. Finally went back to gingerbread, the os that kept the phone reliable for 10+months with no issues what so ever. I had tried a couple of ICS releases myself and always wound up going back to gingerbread, needing a reliable phone on a daily basis I could not afford to leave home with a quirky phone that needs a charge every 6 hrs. I settled into a custom gb Rom that I have been running since April with no problems what so ever, wifeys Epic is on the same custom Rom. The only time we ever went back to sprint was to pickup a desk dock for the Epics.
Corporate sprint stores are usually more user freindly than privately owned stores, and I think if you go to a Corp store and plead your case in a nice manner you may get some satisfaction. The new phones the employees flash are just perks of the job, either huge discounts or free, don't let that get to you, besides it makes sprint look good. I have been with sprint since 2000 and have no complaints.
Give sprint another chance to make good. Good luck.
(No I do not work for sprint)

Thats a good way to look at it. I dunno maby I am getting all the bad apples. My wife is still on her first. Im old and not going to say how old but I just got here checking stuff out. Never rooted or modified any phone.

You see it was a50/50 chance, your wife got the good phone, it can't be that bad, just approach it from a different angle. Hay I'm no spring chicken myself, I got grandkids, and proud of then I am. (The oldest is 9.)

Just my 2 cents. I got the Original Epic on launch day and never had one problem with it. Got the Epic Touch on launch day and am still using it. I have not had one problem with it. With anything mechanical there is always going to be the possibility of failure. It is just a game of chance. I can guarantee you that there are people saying the exact same thing about Verizon, AT&T and TMobile. It just happens.

I know how technical support goes... I did both tier 1 and tier 2 for U-Verse. And it's actually 95% of customers are not tech savvy so they call in for every single issue including a Wi-Fi password. Tier 1 technical support is basically a power cycle then transfer to tier 2 if the issue is still happening. Tier 2 does ALL the REAL technical support. Tier 1 is just a filter, which can't even do that correctly most of the time.

Fios is not that way. I know time Warner is the way you are describing.

FiOS is a fiber optic network similar to U-verse in the sense that you support IPTV, HSIA, and CVoIP.
I know how an ONT works, unless there is a major issue that requires a technician to physically repair the line... it is a simple toggle or reboot of the CPE.

Yes, sprint does suck, I've known more than any sprint tech or rep and they don't generally fix anything, water damage??? Seriously? Who cares if it's been water damaged, doesn't mean the phone won't work, that's why they have quality control refurb people... Yeah, I'm on sprint and I hate every day of it but ALL cell phone providers suck major ass and have you by the balls... I've been paying for 4g for over two years and have NEVER seen it and probably never will until my contract is up, again... Truth be told by the time I and the other 75% of America do see 4g from sprint, they'll put a cap on it and stop unlimited... If I were you and you don't like sprint, just keep going up through the chain and tell people strait up what's going on. If that's a no go, just change your prl and roam constantly until you get that "letter" in the mail... One rant to another, good luck...
