Turn the power off. If your Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is frozen, pull the battery out and reinsert it
Hold the Left and right buttons located beneath the display
Press and release the Power button
Follow the on-screen instructions to hard reset your Sony Ericsson Xperia Play

xperia play r800x
what left and right button
I'd say the back and search keys.

I have an xperia play that works just fine. But a friend has asked me to look at his xperia play which has been physically damaged.
After looking through a few lil videos, I found out that when turning on the Xperia play, while the phone is on the SONY ERICSSON logo I can press BACK or SEARCH or the MENU button repetitively and it accesses the recovery menu. I was under the impression you had to hold the button down.
In any event...recovery mode isn't working on this physically broken phone. If you leave the SONY ERICSSON logo on too long, it eventually goes to this "static tv" screen.
I know it's a far shot...but is there any hope for this guy? I've plugged it into FLASH TOOL and it detects it...but any button I try and click on gives me an error message.
As far as I know, in a stock phone there isn't a recovery You need to install it (market, etc etc)
What error?

I have a problem with my xperia play. When I click the power button on the phone works but the display does not light. The phone works because tapping the bar release feel the vibration or if I press play on the widget music it starts. The only solution at the moment is to open the slide of the phone 5-6 times and then press the home button and the display lights up. Can anyone tell me how to solve? I have stock rom with .58 build root. I have used many roms and this problem occurred after installing the MIUI australia. thanks
It's not a Rom issue, I think you need to replace your flex cable or something is wrong with the display, likely the former.

You need either a kernel capable of going into recovery, or the app
When the phone starts and you feel it vibrate (the second time since the phone vibrate once to let you know it's switching on) then start pressing volume down or menu or whatever
hi guys. i just bought a new xperia acro HD SO-03D. and it was working correctly in shop. but when i got back home and power on the device, it freezes on xperia logo screen and doesnt boot. can anyone help me reset the device? quick reply plz...
Hold the Power button and Volume UP button for 3-5 seconds. There should be 3 vibrations. That's Hard RESET.
There won't be data loss with this.
And from next time please post questions/help in the Q&A Section.
thank you very much. it reseted and booted successfully. sorry for posting here. was a little bit panicky.
When I was working on my Xperia Ion recently, the contact under the power button came out and I haven't been able to put it back in so I am using a paper clip to turn the screen on and off. Can I make the phone screen turn on and off by pressing the home button? I have root access so I can edit any system files if necessary.

Or you could just repair the phone and replace the power button.
Aliexpress has a range of components for the Xperia S if you want to do it yourself cheaply.
There are also repair guides on the web for the Xperia S too.
One of them can be found here on the Xperia Blog.
Oh and as a bit of a tease, there is the dialer code *#*#7594#*#* to reassign button functions....but when I tested it, it didn't work on an Xperia S nAOSP 7.1.2....
