When I was working on my Xperia Ion recently, the contact under the power button came out and I haven't been able to put it back in so I am using a paper clip to turn the screen on and off. Can I make the phone screen turn on and off by pressing the home button? I have root access so I can edit any system files if necessary.

1. Install Xposed Frame Work -> Install/Update Frame Work
2. Install Gravity Box
3. Go to Xposed Installer -> Modules and Enable Gravity Box
4. Go to Gravity Box -> Media -> use volume buttton to wake Screen
Done !
Or you could just repair the phone and replace the power button.
Aliexpress has a range of components for the Xperia S if you want to do it yourself cheaply.
There are also repair guides on the web for the Xperia S too.
One of them can be found here on the Xperia Blog.
Oh and as a bit of a tease, there is the dialer code *#*#7594#*#* to reassign button functions....but when I tested it, it didn't work on an Xperia S nAOSP 7.1.2....

I love this phone! But one thing is really annoying.
I keep this phone in my jeans pocket, but often while walking I hear the reboot sound. The power button is pressed in my pocket. And if this happens long enough, the phone will reboot, even when the phone was locked...
Is there a way to disable this behaviour?
If you install Widget Locker Lockscreen I think you can disable Power button at lockscreen but I don't use this app anymore for several months.
That's a paid app. Seems excessive just to disable this annoying behaviour
seems weird to me. I never had a reboot when phone was in my pocket. Prior to note 2 I had a S2 with same power button construction and behavior, and never expriened this.
Do you use a silicon protecting case? Those cases put a small but excessive pressure on side buttons thus a little push will trigger buttons.

No, I'm using it bare.
Hold your phone, locked with the screen off, and keep holding the power button. You'll see that it'll start rebooting.
I'm not wearing skinny jeans or anything like that, the phone has plenty of room in my pocket... But apparently it's enough to press the button e.g. while driving with my seat belt on.
The annoying thing is that I sometimes don't hear it rebooting and then I'm unreachable for hours until I look at my phone and input the sim code again. Now that I think of it, I think I'll disable sim code input, that will at least connect me again after a reboot.
The problem apparently already existed with the Note 1:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369805
On further googling, this actually is the soft reset feature!!
There goes my hope of disabling it...
EDIT: Another happy user: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401852
I guess it would be possible to disable soft reset, but you'd need to build a kernel with the feature.

Try this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nezdroid.lockscreenprotector
Hi all i made an app to avoid this, blocking power menu on lockscreen no need of root working on 2.2+ and you can set up a custom menu (power and reboot need root) so you should take a look and if you like please leave a 5 stars, or let me know any issues
this is only for lockscreen , when you are outside lockscreen you have the normal power menu
here its the link to play store

EDIT
Or with a rooted phone:
Once the phone is rooted, you install an app called Root Explorer which you get from the Google Play Store.
With this app, do the following please
Go to system > usr > keylayout
Find seckey.kl
Made backup from seckey.kl file.(copy paste in same place then rename or paste to other folder)
Change seckey.kl permission to become 0777, so we can edit the file.
Using text editor open secky.kl
find
KEY 116 POWER WAKE
edit to become
KEY 116 POWER
Save the change
Change seckey.kl permission back to 0655
Reboot the device

If my phone was rebooting in my pocket I would guess a ROM issue before imaging I'd pressed the power button too long.
Perhaps it's time to charity shop those skinny jeans.
Just in case somebody out there running a custom ROM has got the same problem and looks for an easy workaround:
There is a Xposed Module that allows you to modify the power button menu to your preferences and also to completely disable it when the phone is locked.
I have not tested it yet and it is unfortunately discontinued by the developer, but it looks pretty solid to me.
It was intended to run on Sony Xperia devices, but also works on many other devices with AOSP based ROMs.
ATTENTION: It does NOT WORK for TOUCHWIZ ROMs although you can install it to them via Xposed Installer!
Head over to the Advanced Power Menu XDA-Thread.
Cheers!

Two reasons:
-Button itself is damaged or have dirt where is suppose to make contact. If you don't know how to open your Play, leave that to proffesionals in repairs
-Flex cable is damaged. Replace it yourself or in repairs/service (wichever is avaible to you)
-Software error. Highly unlikely, but maybe. Flashing stock firmware will tell is it software error or not
The thing you can do to see what is damaged is next:
Power off phone and start flashtool in PC
Hold back button and doeas flashtool that you are in flash mode.
Repeat again, but this time with various combinations:
-press in different angle button itself (if it's button damaged, it might make contact in specific position)
-Open slider and see is back button working (in case of flex error, sometimes it works when slide is open, but not when slider closed)
-In case of software error, even circle button won't work as "back" in launcher/menues
Always remember costum roms can do anything

Circle on the gamepad acts as back button as well

I have replaced the screen on my Optimus G (E975k, Telstra) and the menu button works whilst the back is off, but as soon as I put the back on, the menu button doesn't work... super annoying!
I'm not sure if my clumsy attempts to replace the screen have damaged the synaptics ribbon and the cover going on puts pressure in the right spot to stop the ribbon cable making the connection for that button or what, but I'm looking for help getting around this.
Is there a way to make longpress on back arrow to open the menu, if so then 90% of my problems are solved, I can force the onscreen nav buttons to show up and that is great but it seems like a waste of space if I can work around it with a back button long press... I tried a few key remapping apps but they do not seem to be able to do what I want to do... if there is a custom rom that would support this then I would just flash that I guess.
Anyway, help from anyone would be appreciated
Thanks
EDIT: Okay so I edited /system/usr/keylayout/keypad_8064.kl
changed
Key 115 VOLUME UP
to
Key 115 MENU VIRTUAL
This allows me to use the volume up button as the menu button, so I'm out of trouble, but I would still like to map back button long press to the duty rather than lose my volume up button.
Hey man, if ur on stock i think u can use xposed modules for long press behaviors and custom button actions.. Usr gravity box etc.. If u like custom rom, many offer custom button actions

Hi there,
Recently on my Sony Xperia M mobile phone the brown paper thing on the inside of the power button fell off, and now it doesn't do anything.
I managed to switch it on with the volume button, as I have the GEM Xperia addon for Xposed (if you don't have root then hold the camera button)
My warranty expired last year. I cannot take screenshots either, plus I will need a lot of help. Could someone please recommend me:
> An way to switch on the phone when it is fully switched off
> How I can get it fixed
> How to get the 'Power menu' when you long press the power button (screenshots as well, etc)
Thanks. I am posting here because I have had a great experience with this forum, lots of helpful users.
All help welcome,

I have the same problem. Use a small piece of aluminum foil

This part could be easily replaced on the device. Either do it yourself or give it to local mobile repairing shop.
